MEET TARA Hallo there, I’m Tara - and my job titles include Pet Photographer, Tattoo Collector and Talent Agent for Nixie Lix. I specialise in Pet Photography and Underwater Photography. When I’m traveling, I also like to collect landscape and editorial imagery. I’ve been published by New Zealand Geographic and in 2015, I won an NZIPP IRIS Bronze Award for one of my Studio Pet Portraits. My photographs have a pretty distinct style – I like lashings of colour, loads of definition and very very cool lighting. Visually intense stuff is how one of my friends refers to my work. I live in Hamilton, New Zealand with my boyfriend Ken and our collection. Our collection consists of his two kids Dell and Mika, Nixie Lix (2 year old American Bulldog/Greyhound X) and my long suffering fatty cat Napoleon James Dynamite. We recently lost our pup Django Mako Lix so I know just how important memories of our pets are.
As an animal lover, pet owner and photographer, I am very lucky to have hundreds of images of my own pets highlighting their personalities. This is what I aim to do for you capture your pets beauty and personality - and the special relationship you have.

In additional to an annual project to donate sessions to families with terminally ill and/or older pets, I donate $15.00 from every session and a percentage of print orders (in your name as a wee thank you) to one of my chosen charities; Chained Dog Awareness

10 TIPS
FOR A
PAWSOME SESSION!
1. Have a look through my portfolio. My Client Consultation form asks you about the images that you like the most – so you can let me know what you like the most which gives me an idea of what you have in mind for your own photographs. 2. Take some time before your session to review the print options and all the products that are available to you. While there is absolutely no obligation to purchase anything, having an idea of what you want to do with your photos will allow me to shoot your session with the end goal in mind – something for the wall, the coffee table or your smartphone case – the choice is yours! 3. If you, or any other two legged subjects, are planning on being in the photos, please let me know ahead of time so that I am prepared for you. Wear solid colour clothing that compliments your pets fur colour but does not match exactly. You may want to choose neutral colours that will not make loose pet hair stand out if they shed on you. The viewers eye will naturally be drawn to the brightest area of the photos so avoid wearing pure white or very bold colours. Pay special attention to your shoes. 4. I will have plenty of healthy treats with me – I use dried liver, beef and heart (please let me know if your pet has allergies) – and I will have my squeaky toys on hand, but feel free to bring along some of your pets favourite things too! Try not to feed them as much as you would normally the day of the session so that they are motivated to work in front of the camera for rewards.
5. Tire your pet out a bit before the session by taking them for a long walk or playing with them. Releasing as much extra energy as possible before the session may help to keep them more relaxed during the session. The best locations have a mix of trees and grass and gardens where we can pose and run to our hearts content! 6. After exercising your pet, be sure that they are thoroughly hydrated and kept cool to avoid panting and slobbering. I will be sure to have some water for your pet – and for us too! 7. Bring your pet freshly groomed. Just like you would get your hair and makeup done before a session, your pet should also look their best before their big photo shoot. 8. Some cats and dogs are uncomfortable in new places and when around people they do not know. If you have a shy pet, you may like to bring an additional person to the shoot whom your pet knows and trusts. 9. Sometimes the best photographs are taken within the first few minutes of the session while the pet is curious and attentive. Take advantage of the time by getting the shots that are the most important to you done first. Please let me know what your top priority is before we get started. 10. Most importantly, do whatever YOU need to do to relax before the session. Your pet will pick up on your energy. If you are stressed, they will be stressed too. Its okay if your pet is not perfect. Its my job to make them look like they are!
ON LOCATION SESSIONS New Zealand has some of, if not the, best scenery in the world and nature creates the most beautiful studio.
 During your Session Consultation we will chose one or two locations - your home may be one of these.
When it comes time for your session, we will spend approximately 2 hours playing, chasing, swimming and posing in our great outdoors to capture those beautifully expressive and colourful faces you know and love.

STUDIO SESSIONS I love creating dramatically lit pet portraits. I use constant lights to avoid giving our animals any frights and to ensure consistent results. My favourite back drops are plain matt black or a light beige. Studio portraits are classic and timeless and suit being printed on beautiful fine art paper. They are also wonderful for making your own greeting cards! I will use a studio in your area. Six weeks notice is required for studio bookings.
