ello, and welcome to the debut issue of our EXCLUSIVE Tardis Base Magazine. It’s rather exciting writing the first editorial for a magazine that no one has seen before. First issues are always the scariest in my eyes. What if we get something wrong? What if people don’t like it? Honestly, editing a magazine is a lot more stressful than it looks (but just as fun as it looks). Let me introduce myself. My name is Ashley, and I make up one half of TARDIS BASE along with the brilliant founder, Conor. This isn’t my first bash at Doctor Who magazine editing. Some of you may know of a Mad Doctor Who Magazine which ran from 2007-2010, some of you might not. Well that was me, hello again. If you never even heard of that magazine, which I’m guessing a lot of you didn’t, then hello for the first time! It’s very nice to meet you. This is what editing a magazine does to you...It gets you talking to a computer screen. So, what is coming up in our very first issue? Well, we are taking a look at the brand new series of Torchwood and giving you the scoop on all the new characters, as well as a quick introduction to the new series (More on Miracle Day in Issue 2, coming November). We also pay a very sad tribute to the late Elisabeth Sladen. There’s also a sneak peak at our first ebook, The Devil In The Mist, which will be coming to Tardis Base in the near future. We also take a look at the classic story, The Sun Makers in The Vault. Did you see the River Song/ Melody Pond twist coming? We take a look at that huge revelation in Doctor What. There’s also all the biggest news from the last month, and we take a look at the Whovian products hitting the shelves. So without anymore chat from me, we hope you enjoy Issue 1 of this very special magazine! • EDITOR: Ashley Mcloughlin
After Piers Wagner and Beth Willis announced they were leaving Doctor Who as Executive producers, it wouldn’t be long before a new producer was announced. Steven Moffat has confirmed that one of the new producers will be Caroline Skinner who will be joining the team in time for this year’s Christmas special. Steven Moffat has said: “The exec joining me on Doctor Who is Caroline Skinner. Somewhere between me laughing in a basement and choosing planets to invade, and Marcus Wilson raising armies, there has to be a Prime Minister actually running the whole thing. It takes a particular kind of person to work on this show – you have to be prepared to work every day, and above all, understand that Doctor Who is impossible to make and then make it anyway. I could see all that in
BBC Worldwide have announced plans to rent digitally re-mastered episodes of Doctor Who via Facebook. Using the new Facebook credits system, fans will be able to visit the Doctor Who page on the social networking site and rent any of the Nine stories from the Doctor’s history. The stories available for renting are An Unearthly Child, Tomb of the Cybermen, The Time Warrior, City Of Death, Earthshock, Attack of the Cybermen, Greatest Show In The Galaxy, End Of the World and Silence In The Library/The Forest of the Dead. BBC Worldwide chief executive John Smith said: “As we have grown internationally, we’ve seen through our Facebook channel that fans who are loving the new series are asking for a guide into our rich Doctor Who back catalogue.
Caroline.” Caroline has worked on shows such as Five Days, The Fades, The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North. •
“Our approach to Facebook and other leading edge platforms is to be right there alongside them in fostering innovation. We see this service as a perfect way to give our fans what they want, as well as a great way for them to get their fix between now and the autumn when series six continues.” Facebook director of platform partnerships Christian Hernandez added: “Millions of people engage with their favourite TV shows on Facebook every day and we’re now seeing broadcasters look at innovative ways to use Facebook tools to connect their fans with exclusive content. Through its Facebook page, BBC Worldwide is giving Doctor Who fans a quick and easy way to access these iconic episodes.” •
Christopher Eccleston has reportedly said that he left Doctor Who after just one series, because he felt like his face didn’t fit in and he didn’t see eye-to-eye with the show. According to The Sun, he made the claims during an acting master class. The Sun claims Eccleston said: “I left because of politics. I did not see eye-to-eye with them. I didn’t
It has been reported that comedian, Miranda Hart has been stopped from taking a role in Doctor Who by the BBC because they believe she should focus on her own show. According to reports in The Sun, Miranda was offered a “significant” role by Steven Moffat, but BBC controller Danny Cohen prevented her from taking the role because he wants her to concentrate on her show, Miranda. A source told The Sun: “Miranda was thrilled to be asked to be on Doctor Who. Steven offered her a decent role and she felt, as it was on the BBC, there would be no problem. But the BBC One controller let it be known that he wants her focused on her show, which he has nabbed from BBC Two. Miranda’s gutted as she feels she could do both.” Is that really fair on Miranda? •
agree with the way things were being run. I didn’t like the culture that had grown up around the series. So I left over a principle. I thought to remain, which would have made me a lot of money and given me huge visibility, the price I would have had to pay was to eat a lot of s**t. I’ve always acted for adults and then suddenly you’re acting for children, who are far more tasteful they will not be bulls**tted.” However, Christopher added he felt that the Doctor was a “great part” to play and he feels that he “succeeded” in the role. It looks like a return for a possible multi-Doctor story for the 50th Anniversary is looking smaller. He quit because he didn’t want to be associated with the show anymore, but he’s done nothing but talk about the show for the past 6 year. Ironic. •
Eve Myles has admitted she would love to see Torchwood on the big screen. The actress who plays the much loved Gwen Cooper told Den of Geek that she would love to appear in it. “That would be incredible,” said Myles. “It would be sensational to have a beginning, a middle and an end in 90 minutes. A big, walloping Torchwood crunched into 90 minutes would be breathtaking.” “If we did do a movie, it would be... Fantastic for the fans who have followed us from day one,” she said. “I think Russell T Davies is capable of doing anything.” Do you think a Torchwood movie would work, and most importantly, would you want it to happen? The talks of a Doctor Who movie have been in the works for years, but nothing ever seems to come of it. •
The highly awaited episode synopsis for the opening story of the second part of Series 6 has been released. Let’s Kill Hitler will mark the return of Doctor Who in the autumn, but is to be screened at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival on August 26th. In the desperate search for Melody Pond, the TARDIS crash lands in 1930s Berlin, bringing the Doctor face to face with the greatest war criminal in the Universe. And Hitler. The Doctor must teach his adversaries that time travel has responsibilities – and in so doing, learns a harsh lesson in the cruellest warfare of all. So, it seems to Doctor will come face to face
with Hitler himself. What do you think of the synopsis? Are you excited for the return of the Doctor in Autumn? •
It seems the gay-sex scenes that John Barrowman promised were cut from the UK version of Miracle Day. The tabloid newspaper, The Sun claimed that BBC bosses felt the scenes were “too explicit” for just “20 minutes after the watershed”. A BBC spokeswoman told the newspaper that the gay sex scene and another which involved violence had been cut. She said: “The UK and US versions of ‘Torchwood’ are slightly different. However, these differences do not change the story in any way and the strong story lines are first and foremost to the series.” Gay sex scenes are nothing we haven’t seen in Torchwood before, and sex scenes are shown way
before the watershed on shows such as Hollyoaks. What happened to the days when Torchwood got away with sex scenes left, right and centre, and orgasmic gas monsters? Are the BBC being old fashioned here? Can people handle a sex scene, gay or not? The US seem to be able to. •
David Tennant has revealed that he would return to Doctor Who, but there are no current plans for him to do so. The actor who played the wildly popular 10th Doctor, told Total Film: “Not impossible, but no plans at the moment. People keep telling me they’ve read online I’m coming back, but believe me, if that happens I’ll be the first to tell everyone, I’ll be shouting about it very loudly. I am very proud of the show and I am aware it casts a long shadow professionally, but I’m happy about that. It is a shadow wearing a cool, long coat!” I think the thought on everyone’s mind right now is the 50th Anniversary in 2013. I think, especially whilst the 9th and 10th Doctor’s are still young, it’d be great to have them back for a multi-Doctor episode to celebrate the 50th Anniversary in style. However, we all know how hostile Christopher Eccelston is towards Doctor Who now... •
It seems that Karen Gillan will be making her west end theatre debut this Autumn with the revival of John Osbourne’s 1964 play Inadmissible Evidence. Bill Maitland, a middle aged lawyer, struggles to avoid the harsh truths of his life and keep a hold on reality. As those closest to him begin to draw away, he puts himself on trial to fight for his sanity. The play will be on at Donmar Warehouse Theatre, and she will be playing Bill Maitland’s secretary, Shirley The Daily Mail has reported that Gillan really impressed the director, Jamie Lloyd. Karen read twice for him at auditions and he was impressed with her charisma and her natural instincts. “More importantly, she can do the text convincingly and she feels as if she comes from that Sixties British Mad Men world,” Lloyd added. The play starts on 13th October. •
John Barrowman has revealed that he would love for Captain Jack to be part of Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary in 2013. During the Torchwood Comic-Con panel, he said he would love to appear along-side Matt Smith for the big 50. “Torchwood and Captain Jack were born from the mother ship, which I always called and referenced as Doctor Who,” he said. “I think it would be an interesting thing. I would love to do it. “If Matt was welcome to it, because he is The Doctor now, I think it would be great. I think it would
be a different kind of dynamic there with Jack and The Doctor. So, yes, I’m totally up for it.” John Barrowman has appeared many times in Doctor Who over the years, but he has yet to appear along-side Matt Smith. “I think it would be disappointing for the 50th anniversary not to have a character like Jack in that show,” he said. “Russell thinks it would be a good idea, I’ve spoken to Steven about it. I love playing Jack, whether with Torchwood or making an appearance on Doctor Who, It’s the best coat I could put on every morning. “It was a dream job for me and [Torchwood costar] Eve [Myles] and then when they said they wanted to do a spin off show, it was just like being handed our dream job on a platter. We never ever thought we’d be sitting here among people like you. “ Do you want Captain Jack involved in the 2013 anniversary? •
nd by fings, I mean things, but Facebook and Fings has more of a ring to it...It also sounds like it was written by an illiterate person. Welcome to The Notes. In this section of the magazine, I’ll be taking you through what goes on behind the screens at TARDIS BASE, covering all the changes that have happened over the last few weeks, as well as things you can expect from the future. Facebook. Everyone seems to have Facebook these days. Even people’s pet’s have Facebook (I kid you not, I know people who update their dog’s Facebook status’ saying “I fancy eating some food” and “my owner is being mean to me”...). TARDIS BASE has had a Facebook like page for a while now, but we got locked out of our account, so we had to make a new one (how inconvenient). However, that’s not the only FB related news that’s happened to TARDIS BASE (It’d be a bit crap if it was. Go and like our new page by the way). TARDIS BASE is now fully integrated with Facebook. That means you can now comment on our news stories on our website using your Facebook account. You can like our news posts to send them straight to your wall for all to see, and you can also send our posts straight to your Twitter Timeline, just by the click of a button. OK, Twitter isn’t really Facebook, but it’s Facebook’s bluer little brother. Another big change to TARDIS BASE is this very magazine! The one you are reading right now (unless we suddenly have multiple magazines... That would just be confusing). We hope you’re enjoying it so far. I know it’s only page 8, but I hope you like the first 8 pages. You wouldn’t even believe me if I told you how much work went into this Issue of the magazine. It’s been in the product process for about a month, by the time you read this. There’s the content to be sorted, the articles to be written, the pages to design, the articles to be put on the pages, the constant changes. I’d like to call it a rewarding stress. As I write this the rest of the magazine is looking pretty near the end (there are just a few more articles that need finishing), but now, I’m just so excited for everyone to see it and get your feedback.
Speaking of feedback, make sure you do tell us what you think of the magazine! It’d be amazing to here your thoughts and constructive criticism. You can do this in many, many ways. You can tell us directly at Tardis-Base.co.nr and TardisBase-Magazine.co.nr via the magazine download posts. You can also tweet us @TardisBase or tweet with the hash tag #TardisBase. Then there’s our official Facebook page, Facebook commenting on the website, or you could drop us an email with your thoughts at tardisbasemagazine@gmail.com. Don’t say we don’t cover every option. You can also subscribe to our Tardis Base Magazine Newsletter which will be sent directly to your inbox when a new issue of Tardis Base has been released, as well as sneak peaks at the covers and what’s coming up in the issue. With Tardis Base being a seasonal magazine, with 1 issue every 3 months, I’m sure it’d be nice to be reminded of us every now and then. To do that, just drop us an email at tardisbasemagazine@gmail.com with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject box. So, don’t be a stranger, get in touch with us, because we really want to know what’s on your mind. Some of the best comments will be featured in the next issue of TARDIS BASE Magazine, so make them good. Until next time, have fun reading the rest of the issue, and goodbye. •
his, is my second attempt at writing this article. I was very near completion, but it didn’t feel right. How could it? How can you say goodbye to somebody who glided across the generations of the biggest scifi show on the planet? It’s impossible to sum up, in just 4 pages, how sad the death of Elisabeth Sladen is. It’s impossible to sum it up in an entire magazine! This year, on April 19th, the news came that nobody was expecting. Elisabeth Sladen has died after a battle with cancer at the age of 65. I never thought her death would affect me as much as it did, but I was devastated. First, I was in shock. I couldn’t actually believe what I was reading. It all started with an “RIP Sarah Jane” that I saw on Facebook, and my first thought was that The Sarah Jane Adventures had been cancelled. Then, after telling my mother what had happened, I broke down in tears. I couldn’t even understand it. I felt like I’d lost somebody close to me. My mother, being the ever-wise being that she is summed it up perfectly. I’ve grown up with her, and she’s grown up with us. That might sound a bit strange because I’m 17, but I first saw Sarah Jane in 2005. I was 12, Doctor Who was back on air and I was obsessed. I spent all the money I had buying Doctor Who DVDs, and the first one I bought was The Five Doctors. Since then, I’ve amassed quite a collection of DVDs, and many of those are Sarah Jane stories. Then, she came back to Doctor Who, youthful as ever. Who knew then that she’d end up having her very own award-winning spin-off on CBBC. Sarah Jane
was re-born to a whole new audience. A whole new generation of fans could now enjoy Sarah Jane, just like back in the 70s. When someone like that dies, the whole fandom feels it. Young and old. Elisabeth Sladen was important. She may have had other roles, but Sarah Jane stuck to her like glue all her life, and she never complained
about that. From her original run in Doctor Who, to her (unsuccessful) own spin-off show, audio adventures, Doctor Who return, and then her next (successful) Spinoff show, Sarah Jane is the one of the only companions from the show to glide across time and mean something to all the fans that watched her along the way. Elisabeth Sladen was Sarah Jane. She put so much of herself into the character. She was a loving and warm character, whose dedication to investigative journalism and investigating the strange and alien led
her to always being in the Doctor’s universe somehow. You always think that people will be here forever. Someone as amazing as Elisabeth Sladen who has been here all this time was the last person anyone thought would die. After the sad death of Nicholas Courtney in February, you always think to yourself “who is next?”. Not for a second would you think it would be Lis. She had this youthful energy, which radiated through the screen. It was clear to see that she loved
playing Sarah Jane, and with the revival of Doctor Who and the introduction of The Sarah Jane Adventures, she had a second-chance to do that. Not only was she was she our Sarah Jane, she was also a mother, and a wife, and they’ve lost someone very special to them. It’s days like these that I appreciate what I have, because you never know what is going to happen. Nobody saw this coming, she kept her cancer a secret, most likely so that she could out her last months in peace.
Elisabeth Sladen may had passed on, but the legacy she has left will live-on. The legacy of Sarah Jane Smith. From her first appearance in 1973, to her last appearance, which will be broadcast later this year, 38 years after her first appearance, she will live on. She was Sarah Jane for nearly 40 years. In 2013, when Doctor Who celebrates it’s 50th anniversary, it will be 40 years since Sarah Jane first appeared. How many other people have played a character for nearly 40 years? Not even most soap stars can boast that. She won’t just live-on through her Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures, she will also live on in us. We’ve all lost someone, and it’s with that sadness that we remember, and she lives on. Every time we watch an episode of Doctor Who and we see Sarah Jane, we’ll a l w a y s remember her for what she was, an amazing a c t r e s s , character and human being. Goodbye, our Sarah Jane. We’ll all miss you. •

Over the years there have been many “did you see that coming” questions, and this feature aims to look at some of Doctor Who biggest cliffhangers and twists, and ask the question, did we really see that coming? What better way to kick off the feature than the big reveal of the identity of River Song. If there is one question that has had fans guessing over the last few years, it is ‘who is River Song’? Who is she? Many of us thought she was the Doctor’s Wife. Well, I think we all thought she was the Doctor’s wife, and hey, she still might be. There is still a lot to River song that we do not know. But what we do know is who her mother is. The ‘game-changing cliffhanger” that was promised at the half-way mark of Series 6 was the revelation of River Song actually being a grownup version of Melody Pond who is Amy’s new-born daughter. Who would have thought that when we first saw River in the library in 2008, that in 2011 it would turn out she’s one of the Doctor’s companions who we hadn’t even met! So over the last years, we’ve all thought that River Song was the Doctor’s wife. From the first “hello Sweetie” in the library, I think the first thought across all of our minds is that she was a romantic interest we have yet to meet. I doubt any of us thought ‘I think she’ll be the daughter of a future companion’. If you did, then I think you should write to Blue Peter because that really does deserve a badge. With Steven Moffat writing that episode before it was revealed he would become the show runner, I think it’s clear he knew he would be taking over and was laying some ground work for himself. The Doctor and River have a very complex relationship. As the Doctor gets older, River gets younger. When we first meet River, she says she’s never seen the Doctor so young, and the next time
we see her she’s still alive, so she is clearly younger. With River’s book of spoilers, assuming that time lines aren’t later changed, by the time she meets him in the library, the whole Amy/Melody/River situation has already happened. Even just thinking about the time line of River Song is getting me confused. I think I need a lie down. The whole concept of her not meeting the Doctor in order is just confusing. I like to pretend that she does... Until there’s some Wibbly Wobly timey wimey thing that happens. So Amy and River meet in The Time of Angels for the first time, and everything seems pretty normal between them. River acts as if this is the first time she has met Amy, even though this is event will be set way after the events of everything that happened. As of yet, there are no clues. The episode ends with River telling the Doctor that she’ll meet him next when the Pandorica opens, which is in fact, the next time we see River. In the Pandorica opens, River is again, a younger version of herself. During these episodes, there is nothing to suggest that River is Amy’s daughter. It seems she is very good at bluffing to keep the secret quiet until
River and Amy sharing mother/daughter bonding time aboard the Byzantium. Isn’t that cute.
it needs to be revealed. We then see River again in The Impossible Astronaut, where she kisses the Doctor, and it’s clear it’s her last kiss with him, but his first with her. Timey wimey! And then, A Good Man Goes To War. River refuses to get involved. She refuses to help the Doctor fight. Then you know this is where the secret is going to come out. River can’t get involved in the events, because that’s how they have to happen. Melody has to be taken to become who she does. River appears at the end of the episode and whispers something to the Doctor, which we assume was about her being melody pond. She then shows Amy the prayer leave with the writing from the Gamma Forest, with the translation of “Melody Pond” becoming “River Song”. So that’s it. River is Melody, and Melody survives to become River. However, there’s so much more to learn about River Song. As each time we see her, she gets younger, what is going to happen next? The events of Melody’s kidnap and her apparent rescue are all to come. More of River’s identity is going to unravel. Is River Song part time lord? Can she regenerate? Will she become the weapon that Madame Kovarian intends her to be? Is she the one who kills the Doctor in the space suit? Is she the little girl in the space suit? So many questions to be answered! River Song is proving to be a very interesting character woven through the eleventh Doctor’s life. So, let’s ask, did you see that coming? The evidence wasn’t there...The clues were few, and River Song is good at keeping things quiet. I definitely didn’t see that coming. •
And again, as the pandorica opens, mother and daughter are together once again...
Imagine what River Song is feeling right now. A picnic with her mother and father who don’t even know who she is.
And then, as a good man goes to war, River Song stays away until the very end of the battle. With her, comes the news of who the child really is. If Amy and Rory don’t quite believe her, then the Doctor could drop them off on earth for a quick stop into Jeremy Kyle. That would make some cracking television. •

The TARDIS arrives in the future on the planet Pluto where there are now six suns, a breathable atmosphere and a large industrial community. The Company controls the planet and exploits the workers, pays them a pittance and then taxes them on everything imaginable. The Doctor and Leela join forces with an underground band of rebels led by a man named Mandrel. They learn that the head of the Company’s operations on Pluto, represented by the human official Gatherer Hade, is an Usurian known as the Collector. The Usurians enslave planets through economic means and then fleece the inhabitants with exorbitant taxes. The Company keeps the citizens in line by diffusing a calming gas, PCM, through the air conditioning system. The Doctor manages to stop this, and the
workers then rise up against the Company and hurl Gatherer Hade to his death from the roof of a tall building. The Doctor meanwhile gains access to the Company computer and programs it to apply a two per cent growth tax. The Collector, unable to cope with the loss of his profits, reverts to his natural form - a type of poisonous fungus - and is rendered harmless.
The Company is based on Usurius. Usurians are listed in Professor Thripsted’s Flora and Fauna of the Universe as a poisonous fungi. Three types of gas are mentioned: Dianane, a deadly poison (to which Usurians are immune), Balarium, a muscle neutraliser, which also effects speech, and Pentocyleinicmethylhydrane (PCM), an anxiety inducing agent. The sonic screwdriver is able to open the Company safe.
The Company came to Earth when its natural resources were almost gone and shifted the population to Mars, after their technicians made it habitable [previous Martian colonies, like those mentioned in The Daleks Masterplan, did not involve terraforming]. Once Mars too had been exhausted the operation moved to Pluto, missing out the four intervening planets which the Collector describes as being ‘not economically viable’. The Doctor says he hopes the humans will be able to return to a regenerated Earth. Pluto was believed to be the outermost body in the solar system until the discovery of Cassius. Pluto has six megropolises (each with its own in station fusion satellite). The miners in Megropolis 3 are known as Ajacks (The Gatherer believes the Doctor is one.) Popular Ajacks names include Wurg and Keek. School is called Preparation Centre and money units are Talmars. Kandor, an Executive Grade from Megropolis 4, once survived three years in a correction centre. PCM is pumped into the air to keep the population subservient. The Usurians have a file on Gallifrey.
The Gatherer employs many amusing forms of address for the Collector, including not only ‘your Excellency’ but also such gems as ‘your Magnificence’, ‘your Sagacity’ and ‘your Enormity’. Michael Keating, now better known for his role as Vila in Blake’s 7, plays the rebel Goudry. There are a number of Aztec influences in the story’s costume and set designs - most notably in the Gatherer’s crested hat, the badges worn by Company executives and the large ‘sun god’ symbol suspended at the back of the Gatherers’ office. These were a nod toward the original intention of set designer Tony Snoaden and costume designer Christine Rawlins to base their work on Mexican propagandist art, an idea that had been vetoed by director Pennant Roberts.
The Doctor says the Droge of Gabrielides offered a whole star system for his head. The Company holds records on the Doctor’s activities: he has a long history of ‘violence and economic subversion’.
When the Gatherer is to be thrown off the roof by an angry mob, his exclamation and facial expression suggest someone who’s watched too many Kenneth Williams films. The Collector’s computer makes various silly ‘Boing!’ noises. You can see car park insignia on the roof top.
With Leela held hostage by the rebels, the Doctor is forced to attempt to withdraw some money - a thousand talmars - from a consumbank booth using a stolen and forged consumcard. Suddenly the door of the booth slams down and a strident alarm sounds. The booth fills with gas, and the Doctor is overcome. Leela, K9 and two workers named Cordo and Bisham are trapped as a vehicle containing a group of armed guards rapidly approaches them down a corridor. Leela is strapped to a trolley by the Collector’s guards and rolled into a condensation chamber to face death by steaming. The Doctor tries to reach her through some vents, but time is running out as the temperature is building in the heat exchanger and the steam will very shortly have to be released into the system. Leela resolutely awaits her fate... Back in the TARDIS, K9 is waiting to finish the game of chess that he was on the point of winning against the Doctor when they arrived on Pluto. The Doctor makes an adjustment to the TARDIS controls that causes the ship to lurch violently, sending the chess pieces flying. He tells K9 that as soon as he has reset the coordinates, they can finish the game. K9 groans.
‘Perhaps everyone runs from the taxman!’ A clever script is balanced by a straight-forward plot, although the subtlety of some of the jokes will be lost on a younger audience. The Doctor’s political asides (‘Probably too many economists in the government!’) have improved with age, however. •
Don’t look away from this page, because you’ll forget everything you read, the minute you do! The Silence are a creepy race, who have stayed in the shadows of humanity, altering events and manipulating time lines to suit their yet-uknown plans. The minute the viewer looks away, they forget all about The Silent they have just seen, thus thinking that any ideas planted in their heads, are theirs. Ever walked into a room and forgot why you went there in the first place? Now there’s an explanation for that. If you see one, record it! QUICK!
Steven Moffat took inspiration from Edvard Munch’s famous 1893 expressionist painting The Scream, as well as the Men In Black. Creepy!
Not only do they have the power to make you forget you ever saw them, as well as manipulating time, but they are also deadly. They can kill you with their 4-finger hand, and leave nothing behind except debris. REMEMBER, don’t shake hands with a Silent!
Prisoner Zero warned that the Pandorica will open, and Silence will fall for the Doctor in his TARDIS.
The Saturnynians say they looked into the cracks and saw the end of all things with only the silence left.
When the Doctor is staying with Craig, he finds this, which turns out to be an abandoned Silence Ship.
Remember this? The TARDIS explodes, causing the universe to end. But who took control of the TARDIS? I think it was the Silence but I keep forgetting what a Silence is...Is it a type of food? BANG! •
Isn’t this year going really quickly? It seems only yesterday, we were faced with the prospect of a split series of Doctor Who, but we’ve already got the first half out the way, and the second half is literally just around the corner. In fact, if you are reading this on the 1st of August, then there are only 27 days left until the new episodes kick off. The first half of series 6 was a very exciting and action packed half, with the amazing two-parter opening episodes, to
the shock revelation of who River Song really is. Then there’s the not-so-great pirate episode (is that just me who didn’t like that, or did you think it was stupid too?), and then the gangers, and the revelation that Amy is a ganger. DOPPLEGANGER! It’s been go, go, go, so come with us as we look back at the first half, and give you a sneak peak into the second half! Oh, that is so exciting!
What happened: 4 envelopes, the Doctor’s death, a mysterious spacesuit and the mysterious and creepy silence. What we thought: This has got to be the best opening story since Doctor Who started again in 2005, and possibly one of the best twoparters as well. The story opens with the TARDIS crew receiving mysterious blue envelopes, and they are taken to America to witness the future Doctor’s death. Cue the present Doctor, the Silence and a lot of questions. This opening episode had such a cinematic quality to it, thanks to director Toby Haynes. The scene that springs to mind is the scene when the Doctor and River and battling the Silence. You feel me? That scene felt like something straight out of Hollywood. The Silence were so creepy as well. As a 17 year old who stopped finding Doctor Who scary many years ago, the Silence gave me an unsettling feeling. Maybe it’s the suits...They do look pretty dapper. Or maybe it’s the fact no one can remember them, and they just drift around in the background being creepy. Overall, such an amazing, visually stunning, and genuinely scary episode!
What happened: Black spots, evil ghost lady, lots of pirates, Amy dressed as a pirate and Rory dies...Again. What we thought: After the amazing opener, I didn’t think Series 6 couldn’t put a foot wrong...Then this happened. Firstly, I’m not a big lover of pirates, so before watching this I felt a bit uneasy. Watching the episode, the first thing I noticed was the special effects. After the amazing special effects, it seems that the budget wasn’t shared with this episode. The role of Siren looked too unbelievable to take seriously, the pirates were a bit tame, and the twist about it being a space ship nurse was just a bit rubbish. Am I being too harsh here? I really didn’t like this episode, as you can probably tell. On the plus side, Amy looked rather dapper (points for saying dapper twice already) as a pirate, and Rory
died yet again, giving Karen Gillan a chance to show off her amazing sad-wife face. Overall, a huge let down after an amazing start. Pirates and Doctor Who...Not that great.
What happened: Scrap yard plug hole outside the universe, an odd ood, an odder family and an even odder bunch of talking Time Lord distress signals. What we thought: This is the one story I think everyone was looking forward to and it really didn’t disappoint. It recently won the title of your favourite episode from Part 1 of Series 6 on our Tardis Base poll, and it received critical acclaim. Familiar face, Suranne Jones, who appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures as Mona Lisa, took on the walking and talking (and slightly insane) role of the
TARDIS, Idris. This episode had it all. Auntie and Uncle provided perfect comedy gold. As a double-act, they were so funny, with their strange antics, and hand-me down body parts. I think the episode is so amazing because of the amazing acting from Suranne as Idris, and the relationship between Idris and the Doctor. The scenes between the two seem almost emotional. He’s been flying around in this machine for hundreds of years, and only now can she talk back to the Doctor. It’s also really good seeing more of the TARDIS in this episode. With Amy and Rory running down countless corridors (let’s face it, it’s clearly the same set over and over) as House plays mind games on them is very scary. Seeing Rory as an old, crazy man wanting to kill Amy, and then him dying (yet again...Running theme here) is very unsettling. Plus, it gives Gillan another chance to showcase her acting abilities and pull her sad-wife, my husband just died again, face. With Rory dying so many times, surely, this is some sort of sign of something to come? It’s safe to say after nearly 50 years of Who, there are still new things to learn about the simple things in the show. I can’t ever look at the TARDIS again, and not see Idris’ pain at not being able to spend more time talking to her Doctor. Overall, a stunning episode that is well deserving of being called a true Who classic.
What happened: Gangers, Wars, a sinking TARDIS, a plastic Amy and a lot of confusing “who is who” moments. What we thought: The second two-parter of the series wasn’t as good as the opening episodes, but they were okay. I thought the episodes were good, but nothing amazing (if that makes sense). I felt the episode was let down by the visual effects (the pile of disposed gangers just looked ridiculous, and so did the storm). I also thought the actress playing Jennifer, Sarah Smart wasn’t really convincing. She seemed like she was trying to act... Is that being mean or did anyone else pick up on that? I couldn’t take her seriously. I also thought the relationship between Rory and Jennifer was odd. He’s a married man, and his wife is there, but instead he stands beside Jennifer...And there is clearly some chemistry there. Rather odd. I think the concept of the episode was brilliant. The whole idea of if the gangers were actually alive and human. They had the exact same feelings and memories as the human versions, but they were kind of made out of rubber. The entire episode was worth it though to see the ending! Such a shock twist. AMY IS A GANGER AND SHE’S PREGNANT. It was a real *gasp* moment for me. Overall a good pair of episodes leading into the mid-series finale, with some fantastic moments (the two Doctor’s together) and a fantastic ending.
What happened: Amy became a mother, River Song became her daughter, a big blue smurf got killed by headless monks, an eye patch woman tried killing the Doctor and Melody Pond was kidnapped. What we thought: The mid-series finale, with the game-changing cliff-hanger was always going to be a tricky episode to nail. It had to be big enough to keep us hooked until the second half, but it couldn’t be so big that it seemed like the end of a series (if that makes sense). I think they did it perfectly. On board Demon’s Run, an army gathered to destroy the Doctor for his crimes against the universe (he was only trying
to help!) And Madame Kovarian, who we have seen for brief glimpses through-out the series wants to turn Amy’s daughter into a weapon against the Doctor. One of my favourite bits of the episode is when the Doctor reveals himself as a head-less monk. His face is priceless. Madame Kovarian was also a very nice addition to the show. She is definitely one of those powerful women you don’t want to cross, kind of like Peggy Mitchell. This episode provided shock after shock. Opening with the destruction of a whole cyberlegion, to the return of all those familiar faces, as well as a ganger baby and the shock of River being Melody Pond, it seemed to have it all. Although, those familiar faces...Am I only one getting bored of seeing them all back in the same room, and each character having a tiny role? It was like The Pandorica Opens, but in A Good Man Goes To War, their presence did seem a bit useless. Although it was nice having them there, don’t get me wrong. It’s always nice to see a familiar face. All in all a fantastic episode of Doctor Who, and the perfect way to keep us gripped until the second half. Enough questions were answered, and even more questions were asked. Whatever happens, Series 6 part 2 should be very, very eventful if part 1 is anything to go by. •
The second half of Series 6 is ready and just around the corner! With less than a month to go until 6 brand new episode of Who, the excitement is building. It all kicks off on the 27th August (to be officially confirmed, but it’s very likely), with Let’s Kill Hitler, and it looks like it’s going to be a good one. The episode features the most evil war criminal of all time...And Hitler. Whoever this war criminal is, they must be
pretty bad if they make Hitler look good. With all the questions surrounding River Song/Melody Pond and what is going to happen next, I’m sure we’ll get very few answers and lots more questions. With Amy Pond definitely staying on for Series 7, it seems that this whole saga could continue running for another year. You can’t say Steven Moffat doesn’t like planning in advance...This has been going on since the Library...

‘In the desperate search for Melody Pond, the TARDIS crash lands in 1930s Berlin, bringing the Doctor face to face with the greatest war criminal in the Universe. And Hitler. The Doctor must teach his adversaries that time travel has responsibilities - and in so doing, learns a harsh lesson in the cruellest warfare of all.’
Mark Gatiss has previously written spooky episodes including The Unquiet Dead and The Idiot’s Lantern, but he promises that Night Terrors features some of the scariest moments he’s ever dreamt up! The adventure has a modern day setting and features a little boy who has a fear of something... Can the Doctor help him?

Tom MacRae’s previous credits include The Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel plus the critically acclaimed The Crash of the Elysium. This is his first television adventure for the Eleventh Doctor and it’s directed by Nick Hurran who was recently at the helm for the updated version of the cult classic, The Prisoner.
We know the adventure is set in a hotel and features an alien called Gibbis played by David Walliams. Again, the episode is directed by Nick Hurran and as writer Toby Whithouse was behind School Reunion and The Vampires of Venice, we know we’ve got something special to look forward to!

Craig Owens is back! The popular character from last year’s The Lodger returns and judging from the trailer for eps 8-13 he’s getting closer than ever to the Doctor!
The big finale! This one remains shrouded in mystery but Karen Gillan has promised us that the series will contain ‘possibly the biggest twist so far’... Is it possible that this is the adventure that delivers it?
The adventure is written by Gareth Roberts whose credits include Attack of the Graske, The Unicorn and the Wasp and, of course, The Lodger.
Steven Moffat penned last year’s incredible finale but it’s probable that this adventure will conclude the series with a bigger bang than ever! •
oming to Tardis Base very soon, is our first exclusive ebook. The Devil In the Mist, written by TARDIS BASE Magazine editor, Ashley McLoughlin and it promises to be a thrilling and spooky adventure. As you can see from the cover, The Weeping Angels are back, and they as sinister as ever. On the small planet of Capron, an ancient village has an ancient secret. There is something living in the mist. Something evil. The Doctor arrives alone in the 41st Century after dropping Amy and Rory off back home for a postwedding break. He quickly meets a young woman called Alice whose sister is missing. She was last seen heading towards the mist. Legends speak of devils in the mist, but no one had ever seen them. Well, no one had lived to tell the tale. The legends say that people who go into the mist never come back. Legends turned to gossip, and gossip turned to myth, and the youth on Capron took the stories as fairy tale. If something goes missing, the devils in the mist are blamed. If someone dies unexpectedly, the devils are to blame. It’s for that very reason that Alice’s sister Katrel went searching for the devils. She wanted to put the stories to bed once and for all. On a foggy night, she travelled down to the beach, but what met her in the mist was nothing she could have ever dreamed of. In a TARDIS BASE MAGAZINE exclusive, we are letting you have a sneak peak at the book, with the complete Prologue for you to read, right here, months ahead of the release.
The legends spoke of something in the mist, something evil. The whole village whispered of the devils that lived in the mist, but they would never willingly talk about it. Fear kept their conversations in the shadows, and fear kept them from going anywhere near the mist. It was for this very reason that Char Livingston decided to take a walk as the sun started to set. As the day ended, and the mist started to appear, Char headed towards the beach. She’d heard stories of the devils that lived in their village, but never believed them. She was sure it was just paranoia coming from the elders of her village, looking for something to blame their problems on. Every time something went missing, it must have been the devils in the mist, if someone went missing, then the devils must have taken them. She’d once heard her mother blame the devils for stealing flowers from the garden. None of the other villages for miles around spoke of anything that resembled evil, nor did they believe the stories that came from Katrel’s village. Neither did Char . If she could just see something for herself, maybe she could believe what everyone else believed. None of the people she knew had ever seen anything, and yet, people were still convinced that something was out there. She knew that going to the beach as night drew in would bring mist, and nothing else. She knew as she walked down the grassy banks that lead towards the beach that there would be nothing on the beach when the mist arrived. Sitting on the beach watching the tide come in, she saw the rest
of the beach was deserted. The beach was where there was most mist once night had fallen, and long before the hints of night, everyone else had already rushed home to hide behind their doors. As the tide crept closer towards her, the night grew darker. Looking out to sea, she noticed that she couldn’t the horizon. The mist was coming. The temperature dropped, the water crept closer, and the mist thickened. Before Char noticed, it was dark. It was then, she wondered what the hell she was doing. She was sat on the beach in the pitch black, with only the light from the moons guiding her. Fear willed her to run home and never look back, but curiosity made her stay. She wanted nothing more than to leave, but she felt compelled to stay. Coming this far only made her want to see that there was nothing to be afraid of, but the more she told herself that, the more scared she became. That’s when she saw it… Something in the mist, something coming closer. At first she thought it was someone taking a walk on the beach, but the mist kept thickening, and every time
it cleared she noticed the figure crept closer towards her. “Hello, is anyone there,” she stood up to try and get a better look. There was no response. The mist rapidly grew thicker, so thick, she could have reached out her hand right in front of her and she was sure she’d lose it. Slowly, the mist swallowed her up and she was surrounded. She spun around on the spot trying to see which way to run, but all she could see was white. Trying to concentrate on the figure, the mist cleared, just enough so she could look it in the eye.. She was face to face with the devil in the mist. She attempted to scream, but the mist muffled her sounds. She blinked the tears from her eyes, and then she was gone. •
