01 THE MIAO MINORITY: DENGLU VILLAGE

Jian, is composed of the character “door” and character “moon” within the door the space of a door gap revealed by the moonlight shining through it. The meaning is ranging from the measurement of space and time to the description of human behavior.

In the province of Guizhou, China, a total of nearly 500 people from the Miao minority has settled in Denglu village, which is now facing lots of threats and challenges in the modern world. In such a sensitive context, it was required from us a student group to produce a masterplan proposal to the village and to inaugurate architectural interventions.

The proposal consists of a loop of connected activities on the pedestrian scale, these interventions are mean to revive the existing potential and to maintain the village’s economy. The public spaces in the village are seen as a potential that is to contain interventions. We have also selected possible locations for the house module design to be fitted and to have an impact on the urban sprawl in the village.

HOUSING MODEL The Miao Denglu village,

The Housing module’s architecture features are extracted from a narrative, that was written by students after studying the miao culture’s routines. It is designed specifically to satisfy the needs of the inhabitants and to cooperate with the context for providing stability and homogeneity for the inhabiting families and their economy and community. In the village scale the house acts as an conclusion to the urban sprawl that was occurring, given the location of the five houses proposed in the masterplan.

In the vocational school, the spatial approach is organized on the matter of a study of users and needs, and the architecture techniques respond to the built environment of the village and the labor capabilities of the locals as well as the teachings that the project proposes them to be taught. It contains workshops as well as classrooms for teaching and administrative offices. On the village scale the building is unifying the morphologies of the site and is providing space for agriculture in a steep environment, as well as improving accessibility.

The project’s aim is to result in folding the connecting lines between the villages to support the slow mobility traffic between them and by making milestones in the peripheries of the subject villages, the psychogeographical perception of the region can be unified and wandering between the peripheries of the villages can be perceived doable. In addition, the project would result in an immersive tourism experience for that allows the tourists to interact with the land and its original community.

Wandering the Midlands: Calabria,

Our vision is promoted by the slow mobility infrastructural system that we are presenting, after proposing the route and studying it, we propose the locations of needs to services and the locations with potential. In our proposal we also study the intermodality of the route we propose, with the means to allow it to collaborate with the existing infrastructure for the sole purpose of accommodating the users within it.

We present our tool box that we created from the analysis of previous references and how the induced the project into the site.

In the architecture outcome of the project we use logics that are based on our reading of the site. In the case of having to deal with non-heritage ruins of an ex station we chose to maintain its image and its logic of reality, by the means of preserving and signifying the existing walls with their texture and following the two dimensional axis of symmetry that collects the image of the site, being a previous railway station that is strictly related to the horizontal boundary.

We were inspired by the finding of the use of the building towards the west and that it was the house of the keeper of the station, and we concluded our program that includes a quality of residential activity to a possible entire family in that sense. Moreover, we consider the number inhabitants in relation to the visitors of the facility and we offer the visitors an inclusive experience of the architecture that lets them wander in all directions while finding shelter and resources to make it possible for their journey to become reality.

Takes the visitor to the parallel world of Santa Clause where the laws of climate meet their new limits.

Our approach was to define the characteristics of the Ounasvaara Mountain and to make the project the bridge of architecture between the visitors and the standalone character of the site which on its own is a place no one should miss seeing, and design a hotel for sightseeing and winter sports that is connecting people.

In the entry belongs the Astronomical sculpture that celebrates the sky of Rovaniemi in front of the Visitors center that has a reception and then a flexible visitors space with a restaurant. Behind it is the Stargazing quiet room, and around the site are the Cabins for the visitors laid according to the topography with a Clubhouse serving its occupants. The floor plans are constructed in the form of pocket entrances sequenced by a spatial focus area of vertical relief with sky oriented openings.

URBAN CATALYST

The project is based in the existing site of Ex macello which a slaughterhouse that is currently abandoned and Plazzaine liberty. The aim of the project is an urban regeneration of the whole area with its surrounding considering the rules and regulations of the municipality after doing a deep urban analysis of the current situation to learn the most about the site and mark its potentials and weaknesses.

After the conduction of the site analysis, a concept was synthesised and visually presented along with the motto of the project to give the most powerful meaning for the prolonged process to be based upon and a vision was set. Yet, due to the nature of the project, the complete version is not available in this portfolio.

Functions / landuse. The area hosts multiple cultural activities that form a network and can be completed by creating a cultural festival theme in our area that attracts tourists and motivates the youth. Large voids in the east side of our site has opportunities that we can plan.

Greenery. Scattered public green areas can be connected through turning the unused spaces into green buffer zones and welding green plots by activating trees in streets.

Urban sections. Residential around the site has a poor Pedestrian/ Bike quality

Population study. To capture the opportunity of having a higher than Milan average population of youth we invite the youth by cultural events and services for students.

05 ENVISIONING THENEWCAPITAL

The new administrative capital in Egypt is a mega project that we have adopted in our bachelor studio. A re envisioning plan was proposed and different sites were to hold architectural projects. The updated vision of the masterplan was to become a global hub for youngsters.

The product of the masterplan were zones for different themes to dominate, the project is located in a business district that intersects with a pedestrian path. The location seemed a very good habitat for the Microsoft headquarters building to be located, besides the monumental landmark tower in the green river.

FLOOR PLANS

The building façades are designed accordingly as an answer to the large pedestrian plaza in front of it and presents itself as a large pix elated mass that is transparent from the ground floor and that is inviting the public into the central open space for activities. The pixelation of each side is proportional to the amount of heat gains by direct sunlight that the side usually gets. The section clears the idea of not using typical floors. Each floor is designed to be a different experience from the others and this helps the employees get out of the routine easily by experiencing the vertical quality of the space. The steel column and beam structure system is supported by two cores that are made of concrete to act against the lateral loads that are affecting the tower as of its high rise typology.
