Can your home cost $10 yet fit in a backpack?
Low Cost Shelter Context and Design Opportunity Rajasthan, a dry, desert land with sparse vegetation, rough and rocky, with a lot of dry patches. Inhospitable. Men and women work together while older members of the family stay back and tend to the children, taking care of other activities such as getting water, etc. Hot dry afternoons with temperatures hovering between 32ºC– 48ºC. Villagers walk several kilometers everyday from their village to the work site and back. It was here that a design opportunity was seen for a portable, collapsible, affordable shelter.
Preliminary Prototype
Low Cost Shelter The Concept

Can a horse inspire a camping adventure in your bedroom?
Context and Design Opportunity The project started with understanding a child’s need for private space that she could also personalize. Explorations to extract meaning, inspiration and possible design directions from these experiences and integrate them into the design. Translating into a structure with which the child can identufy, interact and connect. Integrating all the functions and experiences within an indoor environment. Exploring the possibilities of using eco-friendly materials.

Do we really need to throw away the packaging?
Premium Polished Context and Design Opportunity Polished Pebbles are a premium product which have a variety of decorative uses. They are beautiful pieces of polished stone which come in a variety of colours and aesthetically pleasing to look at. Common Applications : . Aquariums . Fountains & Pools . Pathways . Wall and Floor Cladding . Flower Vases . Landscaping . Interior Decoration A premium product which should have packaging that accentuates both, the beauty of the product and its function.
Ornamental Sculpture
Preliminary Research Current Packaging : Consists of either heat sealed plastic bags or netted bags as shown. Packaging size varies from 1 Kg - 5 Kg bags. Price Range : From Rs. 100/- to Rs 250/ per Kg Once the pebbles have been taken out of the bags, the bags themselves are either thrown away or used to keep things like fruits etc. for some time. Sooner or later they land in the trash, ending up in the oceans or landfills, adding to environmental pollution.
5 Kg Netted Bags containing pebbles. Vary in size depending on quantity & volume. Price : Rs. 1200/-
Concept Explorations The Brief : To create a new attractive packaging for polished pebbles which should : . Enhance the value of the product inside. . Be usable separately even after the pebbles have been removed. . Have its own aesthetic beauty and its own distinct identity. Since pebbles are mainly an aesthetic element, the new packaging was designed to look just like a pebble itself.
1 Kg Container 2 Kg Container 3 Kg Container
4 Kg Container
The Concept Made of textured ABS, mimicking ceramic, the pebble shaped hollow container can be used to hold the pebbles. These containers are stackable and range in size and volume to hold from 1 Kg to 5 Kg of pebbles. They make great gifts as well.
5 Kg Container
*Containers of different sizes and volumes stacked one on top of the other.
Alternate Uses The empty containers can be used as decorative pieces in their own right and put on display. As shown, the container has been used as an unusual flower vase, another possible usage scenario.

Can men wear flowers?
The Inspiration Form Development The Bird of Paradise is an ornamental flower, indigenous to South Africa. The project included studying the flower, identifying it’s basic form, distilling it to the simplest possible form, and using it as a design inspiration. This simple form should reflect the core attributes of the flower, such as: . Flamboyant . Proud . Magnificent . Ornamental . Decorative
The Bird of Paradise Flower
Flamboyant Proud Magnificent Ornamental
The Concept The objective of the exercise was to create a tangible product using the form derived from the flower. I chose to make a set of cufflinks because the form of these cufflinks closely matches the attributes listed previously. Cufflinks are sophisticated accessories which accentuate a man’s attire. This set of cufflinks is decorative, ornamental and flashy in its own elegant way.

Classroom to playground to classroom?
SimPlay Context and Design Opportunity The furniture in classrooms is mostly static and monotonous serving only to be seated or studied upon. Though the addition of colour does help, it still does not improve the usage experience. Most furniture in school classrooms is either made of wood or plywood. Though care is taken that there should be no sharp corners, over time and with use, the wood starts to chip away exposing splinters and sharp edges that can cause harm. The objective of this exercise was to re-design the classroom furniture to be more dynamic and be used to enhance the learning experience for the child.
SimPlay Concept Explorations The Brief : To design playful, colorful and safe classroom furniture for kids aged 3-5 years old. The furniture should be dynamic and should enhance the overall learning experience, making it fun. I decided to explore simple elements, basic shapes, pure clean forms that interact with each other playfully.
SimPlay The Concept Using a combination of simple basic shapes such as triangles and cylinders, these sets of chairs were designed. Made of EVA foam with wood inserts that act as useful storage containers and shelves.
Wooden Shelf unit
EVA Foam triangular block
EVA Foam cylindrical block
Wooden cylindrical storage unit
The wooden inserts are completely encased by the EVA foam so there is no danger of wood chipping or sharp edges, one reason why this design works so well. These chairs can also be grouped together to make different kids of formations and alternate seating.

{
Classroom Project 4 Weeks
When was the last time you wore a fiddle free helmet?
Helmet Retention System Context and Design Opportunity Observation No. 1 : . Once the rider puts on a conventional helmet, he/she has to rely only on touch to figure out how to fit the lock in the buckle under the chin, requiring both hands. . This is inconvenient as the rider can’t see the position and orientation of the retention (locking) system. Observation No. 2 : . When the helmet is taken off and carried around, the straps and buckle dangle and strike against the helmet visor, causing scratches and dents.
Minimum time and effort to to figure out locking system Helmet Retention System
Minimum scratches due to retention system
Concept Explorations
Retention System Semantics
Safety
Assembly
Ergonomics
The new system should be as simple and straightforward as possible to have the least learning curve.
The new system should be as effective as the existing retention system but without the inconveniences.
The components should be easy to assemble and disassemble.
The new system should be non obtrusive and easy to use.
The components should be easy to manufacture.
It should convey the operational process by itself without the help of any external aid.
It should, by itself, not cause harm in the case of an accident.
It should be possible to use just one hand to operate.
The materials used should be strong and durable for them to function reliably.
Helmet Retention System The Concept A new retention system was designed for the helmet which included a knob on the side attached to a rack and pinion gear system integrated within the formed strap. As we turn the knob, the rack and pinion gear system engages and makes the strap swing up or down. Since the strap is pivoted on one end, it also tightens or loosens depending on the direction in which the knob is turned.
Turn the knob, the Rack & Pinion Gear engages & the strap loosens & starts moving downwards.
The more you turn the knob, the looser the strap becomes and moves downwards.
Strap fully open & shown in final position.

What if salt and pepper sparked a conversation?
Symmetrical Ergonomic Flow Sculpture
Concept Explorations The objective of this exercise was to take an everyday object like a pair of salt and pepper shakers, and turn them into works of art, inviting conversation and comments.
* Variations of the concept involving different grips
* Final Concept
The Concept The new Salt and Pepper shaker set was designed to be symmetric, ergonomic and beautiful to look at.
Negative space acts as a visual as well as a functional aid.
Made either in brushed aluminium or stainelss steel in the metallic range, or wood. The negative space between the two halves not only serves as an interesting visual element, but functions as an extremely comfortable and natural grip as well.

Classroom Project 4 Weeks
Can light be added and multiplied?
Sustainable Malls Context and Design Opportunity We studied large shopping malls to understand their requirement of materials and energy. This was supported by case studies and academic research to find out good and best practices in order to make recommendations for sustainable yet profitable mall designs. After our preliminary research and site visits, we realized that there was much greater potential for efficient use of energy compared to materials. Materials often tend to be dictated by brands which want to protect their brand image and therefore discourage use by others. However, if this can be developed further, there is a very significant potential for improvement. This study therefore concentrates more on efficient use of energy rather than materials.
Sustainable Malls Concept Explorations The Brief : To design a system, process or product by which the energy consumption and wastage in a mall can be reduced. Our concepts used mirrors and reflective materials to re-direct and distribute sunlight to provide an ambient lighting system with diffused light. We also explored the possibility of using shaped stretched white or pastel cooured canvas sheets as diffused reflectors for distributing light better.
Reflective Polyester sheets mixed with Polyurethane reflect & diffuse the light to give an ambient light source effect.
Sustainable Malls The Concept Reflecting canvas used as a diffused reflector : By using Polyester sheets mixed with Polyurethane which are 80% reflective and 15 times stronger than PVC, which are then drapped under the ceiling / roof, it is posible to use them as diffused reflectors to reflect and evenly spread the light. As an added bonus of this idea the trapped air between the ceiling and the sheets acts like an insulater and therefore reduces the load on the HVAC system.
*Possible Combinations of triangular sheets of Polyester reflective panels.
Source of light pointing towards the reflecting Polyester sheets hung under the ceiling.
Pattern 1
Pattern 2
Sustainable Malls Final Lighting System Shown here is one possible reflecting unit with it’s own set of integrated lamps. Multiple units can be mounted along the ceiling thereby reducing the number of halogen lamps or CFL’s required Since they diffuse light, the spread of the light is over a much greater area. Mood lighting and Aabient lighting effects can also be achieved using these panels by changing the fabric colours and configurations.
* Examples of the Polyester panels reflecting and diffusing the light.

Classroom Project 4 Weeks
Can you build a post office in 3 sq feet ?
India Post Kiosk Context and Design Opportunity The Indian Postal Service is the oldest & largest organization in the world with over 1,55,000 Post Offices all over the country. It recently completed 158 years. During our information gathering phase, certain insights were gained. It was found that incovenience to people was caused by waiting in queues for a long time for any service, posting with the wrong address due to human error, unavailability of postal stationary, availability of change, etc. As technology develops and more and more people embrace it, it was felt that the Indian Postal Sevice should also use technology to further reach the people and make the Post Office experience pleasant.
India Post Kiosk Insights & Problem Statements
Stamps
Initial Problem Statement : . To reduce the time and effort taken in the posting process, be it letters, book posts, greetings, money orders or parcels.
Inland Letters
. To improve the efficiency of the overall postal system . . To reduce human error and to bring the postal services to the people. Based on our observations and insights, it was decided to create a kiosk for the Indian Postal Services which would dispense postal stationary and help in the franking and posting of letters as well.
Envelopes
Post Cards
India Post Kiosk Concept Explorations The Brief : To design a Kiosk and a simple user interface for the Indian Postal Services. The proposed kiosk should : . dispense postal stationary and handle payments. Stationary includes stamps, envelopes, postcards and inland letters. . It gives the facility of posting letters without buying and affixing a stamp. . It also has a facility of scanning letters and telling us if we’ve put the correct postage and pin code or not.
India Post Kiosk The Concept The kiosk was designed to improve the accessibility of the services provided by the Indian Postal Service to the people. These kiosks can be placed on roadsides just like the ATM kiosks and they will dispense postal stationary as well as help you post letters. The red and White colour combination follows from the colour reference adopted by the Indian Postal Service.
