5 reasons why we love Rutgers, Valentine’s Day style JANINE PUHAK STAFF WRITER

With Valentine’s Day on our minds, we don’t know how to express how much you mean to us. You’re our home, favorite destination, sanctuary, playground, motivation and challenge. No matter how many mistakes we made our first year, you have stayed constant through some of the most precious years of our lives. For that, we thank you with these five reasons on why we love you.

BIG TEN ATHLETICS

While the tailgates and football season seem to get all the glory, it’s the work of all Division I athletes to defend the spirit of the Scarlet Knight. Both on and off the field, this communal sense of pride is the heartbeat of Rutgers.

DIVERSITY

Saturating every element of student life, the racial, ethnic, religious and cultural diversity is what truly defines Rutgers as extraordinary. There is a place for everyone here, and all are welcome. An honorable mention

also goes out to the geographical diversity of all our campuses. We even have a river, so take that Penn State.

CUISINE

From grease trucks to bubble tea, the abundance of delicious food seems to be never ending. How many other colleges have four dining halls and an Easton Avenue glittered with falafel, frozen yogurt, wings and more pizza shops than we know what to do with? The answer is no one. Now it’s 2-0, Penn State.

NIGHTLIFE

Whether you’re into house parties, basement shows, Greek life or interest clubs, there’s a social scene for everyone.

TOP-RATED PROGRAMS

Guess what people? If you play your cards right, you’re going to get hired and it’s going to be great. We are consistently ranked among the top-research universities in the world, and are only a train ride away from New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.. It’s a great time to be an undergrad here indeed.

HAVE A MOVIE NIGHT

DESIGN EDITOR

What’s a better day to bingewatch girly movies with your friends than Valentine’s Day? Now is the time to break out classics from your childhood, like “Clueless,” “13 Going on 30” and “Mean Girls.”

The only thing better than having a significant other on Valentine’s Day is having an Ann Perkins to your Leslie Knope on the dreaded Feb. 14. Since when do all those cutesy posts on Instagram and Facebook have to be just for you and your significant other? Here are some ways you and your best friend can spend the weekend avoiding sappy posts on social media.

HAVE A SPA DAY

Dive into this delectable treat with love in every bite. CHLOE COFFMAN / ASSOCIATE PHOTO EDITOR

Strawberry Nutella trifles with love in every bite JULIA TERRANOVA CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Strawberry Nutella trifles are the perfect end to a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner. They’re incredibly easy to make, and all of the ingredients can be prepared ahead of time. Don’t feel confined to just using these ingredients, think of this recipe as a template. Add a layer of jam for some added flavor, substitute your favorite fruit for the strawberries or use lightly sweetened Greek yogurt and angel food cake for a healthier treat.

SIMPLIFYING TIP

Purchase a plain chocolate cake at the supermarket.

WHAT YOU NEED - 3 cups of chocolate cake, cut into 1 inch cubes - 10 strawberries, sliced - ¼ cup of Nutella - 2 cups of whipped cream

HOW TO MAKE IT

Put nutella in a small plastic bag and microwave for 30 seconds to melt slightly. Snip off one end of the bag. Drizzle Nutella along the insides of two mason jars to create a stripe-effect. Do not use all of the Nutella at this point. Layer your ingredients in the order of whipped cream, strawberries, cake, drizzle of Nutella and repeat. Once you reached the top of the mason jar, put a final layer of whipped cream and a top with strawberries.

If going out to a spa isn’t your cup of tea, have a night in with your laptop open, ready to scroll through Pinterest for DIY ideas. Paint each other’s nails and (very carefully) try out some DIY face masks.

GO OUT FOR BRUNCH

There’s just something so very Sex and the City about ordering mimosas and getting tipsy with your friends at 1 p.m.. If you’re 21 and have a lot of pent up gossip to lay out on the table, this is a great option. It’s also good in case one, or even both of you have significant others to spend the evening with.

MAKE SWEET SNACKS

Strawberries, melted chocolate and whipped cream are all

forms of delicious food porn. Therefore, they have no right, being strictly a snack to share with your significant other. Melt chocolate in a small bowl and put some whipped cream in another. Then, put the bowls in plates and lay the strawberries around the bowl. There you have it, an Instagram-worthy, totally platonic and sweet snack.

GO OUT

So what if it’s Valentine’s Day, who’s stopping you from hitting the bars with your friends? There’s no shame in going out just because it’s Feb. 14. Use it as an excuse to get all dressed up, or screw it all and go in sweatpants — who cares? There’s no one to impress, you’re here for Galentine’s Day anyway.

A girl can never have too many colors of nail polish, am I right ladies? From burgundy to matte gray, the choices of nail colors are endless. Fill that chocolate box with an array of nail polish and you will have her hear t.

Tired of the same box of chocolates? Want your significant other to change up his or her Valentine’s Day gift? Here are five things that should really be in that heartshaped box.

BEYONCÉ TICKETS

The queen of everything just announced her world tour. Tickets for her tour go on sale in about two days, and everyone knows how quickly the tour is going to sell out. So, wouldn’t it be fantastic to find a pair of tickets instead of some boring cocoa?

ANYTHING FROM VICTORIA’S SECRET

Picture this, you’re about to open up a box of chocolates, expecting about 20 pieces. Plot twist, it’s something from every girl’s favorite store, Victoria’s Secret. Maybe it’s some sweet lip gloss, really cute underwear or the “Bombshell” perfume you’ve been dying to have.

GIFT CARD TO SEPHORA

Buying high end makeup is basically equivalent to taking out a small loan. Most girls love nothing more than buying a new makeup palette, so make her day by giving her the opportunity to stock up without buying the wrong colors.

Woo your Valentine’s Day lover with soft, romantic makeup NATALIE LIN STAFF WRITER

Valentine’s Day is upon us, and whether you’re looking forward to a night out with your significant other or hurrying to make last minute plans, it’s always a fun excuse to experiment with a new beauty look to spice-up your daily routine. Even if you’re a self-proclaimed Valentine’s Day grinch, we’ve got you covered on a few Valentine’s day inspired makeup ideas that will have you looking irresistible in no time.

VIOLET VALENTINE’S DAY SMOKEY-EYE

Turn up the heat on your special day with this sultry smokey eye. This look is perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re going to the movies to see friends or have a hot date with that special someone, you’ll be sure to impress.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

Moisturize your eyelid area to hydrate your skin. After finishing your general face makeup, apply a bit of foundation to your eyelids, and make sure to keep the coat

light. When applying eye color, this will allow the colors to stand out and stay fresh longer. Start your smokey-eye look by drawing a thick line of eyeliner on your upper lash line with a black kohl pencil. Using a back and forth movement, take a blending brush and smudge the liner slightly all the way up to your eyelid crease. Take a medium purple shadow and layer it on the outer part of your eyelid. Make sure to blend the corners and integrate it into the black kohl liner. Apply the heaviest shade on your outer eyelid crease, and adjust accordingly depending on how dark and intense you want your look to be. On the inner part of your eyelid, apply a light purple or soft pink shadow. Blend the two colors lightly, and make sure to re-apply the darkest shadow to the outer areas of your eyelid. Finish your look off by adding a light swipe of the medium purple shade to your lower lash line. Finish off with eyeliner and with a dust of silver shadow on the inner corners of the eye. Don’t forget your eyelashes! If you’re like me and are not blessed in the lashes depart-

ment, top off this look with false eyelashes to make your eyes pop.

KISSABLE LIPS

Nobody likes dry, cracked lips on any occasion. Everybody will want to give you a big smooch if you listen to us.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

Keep your lips smooth, hydrated and super kissable.

For beautiful lips, ultra-matte lip color is all the rage. Matte lipsticks are especially useful for Valentine’s Day because they’re rich in pigment color, long wearing and did I mention kissable? Liquid matte lipsticks are fabulously easy to apply. Star t at the middle of your lips and spread the color outwards on both sides, taking care not to over line your lips. You could

always opt for a classic red lip, but we’re recommending a sweeter, less intimidating look. I recommend a nude mauve or soft-pink lip color. If you’re into the glossy look, finish of f with a coat of clear gloss. Beware — this might inter fere with the quality of the matte color. For a smooth finish, remember to exfoliate your lips before applying.

On Valentine’s Day, many men are willing to jump through hoops to please their significant other. They often forget who was there before the relationship started, the bros. Whether you have a valentine or not, here are five reasons why you should celebrate your bromances this Valentine’s Day.

YOUR BROS KNOW YOU BEST

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, so are cravings for everything that lists sugar as the first ingredient. Whether you’re spending this holiday with a significant other or cozying up on the couch watching Nicholas Sparks movies, why not incorporate a “Love Potion” in the mix? This decadent shake will satisfy your love and sugar needs. For you lazy folks out there that just “can’t deal,” the simple ingredients used in the shake will be sure to satisfy your sweet tooth, minus the annoyance. With its festive red coloring, these milkshakes are sure to be a hit on Cupid’s Day. Chocolate, cake and ice cream are just a few of the things that top the list of Valentine’s Day favorites. Rather than eating the same old, cliche treats, why not use them to create the

ultimate “love potion”? Who knows, maybe if you drink one, someone will think you’re smoking hot.

WHAT YOU NEED

Chocolate ice cream, milk, red velvet cake mix, whipped cream and NECCO Sweethearts candies as a topping.

“LOVE POTION” SHAKE

3 scoops of vanilla ice cream 3 tablespoons of red velvet cake mix 4 ounces of milk Whipped cream Sweethearts candy How to make it: To create this lovely drink, simply combine every ingredient, besides the whipped cream and candy, into a blender and blend until smooth. Depending on the consistency you’d like, you can continue to add milk for a thinner shake. Your “Love Potion” will most definitely bring all the boys to the yard.

They’ve experienced both the best and worst parts of your personality and yet, they still like you. They know what makes you happy and also what makes you tick. Your bros are the people who know what’s best for you, keep that in mind.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO IMPRESS YOUR BROS

When in the presence of strangers, you may hold back. But your bros know the real, unpolished version of you. There is nothing you have to hide when you are with your bros. Don’t disregard the fact that there is nothing you can’t do freely in front of your bros.

YOUR BROS HAVE BEEN THERE FOR YOU IN THE PAST Your bros have been there for you since day one. You’ve been through thick and thin and have all shared similar experiences. No one you meet can compare to the brotherhood you’ve formed with your squad. Appreciate all of the experiences you’ve enjoyed with your bros thus far.

YOUR BROS WILL BE THERE FOR YOU IN THE FUTURE

Cherish the idea that no matter what changes, you will still have your bros. They are the ones who will get you on your feet after a break up. Your bros may have even helped you into your relationship in the first place.

A NIGHT OUT

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

When we think of Valentine’s Day, we are often filled with images of material things in the form of hearts and baby cupids. A night out can really show your man that you’re not only willing to spend money on him, but time, too. For your information, New York City is only a train ride away, so dinner and a show make for the perfect budget-friendly romantic getaway.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, you struggle with the same question every year. What gift do I get the man in my life? After all, men have the reputation to not be into the holiday itself, which is sappy and exaggerated. No matter your price range, things always exist that surpass the typical sports jerseys and power tools.

GROOMING KITS

Shaving cream, beard oil, a comb or deodorant, you get the point. Ever y man likes to look and feel good, so there’s nothing wrong with helping him out a little bit.

ACCESSORIES

Ties, bow ties, wallets and suspenders. We all need them. Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming to get it all together yourself. Even the most dapper man will appreciate a little styling from his significant other. It shows you care and and that you

are interested in the things he loves to.

A VINYL PLAYER

A little on the expensive side, but totally worth it. A vinyl holds that cool vintage flare that is so often lost in today’s digital-streaming world. If your man already has a vinyl player, then load him up with records. Production and sales have been steadily rising over the past couple of years. A few of his favorites are sure to have albums out on vinyl.

HONESTLY, THE CLASSICS ARE PERFECT

Swap out the flowers for some chocolates, and instead of a big teddy bear, get him a body pillow for all the nights you can’t be there to cuddle.

Is it love or is it lust? How do we differentiate it? Find out right now NICK DEMAREST CORRESPONDENT

Valentine’s Day is approaching, and mixed feelings are running through the minds of all individuals, in and out of relationships. Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrating the unconditional, mutual agreement between two consenting partners we as humans like to call love. This begs to ask the question of what love really is, and what would constitute its legitimacy. Historically speaking, throughout most of Western culture, the most popular definition of love comes from one of the most debated books of all time, the Bible. In 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8, love is defined as, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

This sounds romantic and fulfilling, but is it really practical in the age of dating through Tinder, Grindr and all the other lust-fueled dating sites? The question is, how do people fit into this romanticized definition of love? Lust has truly made it’s mark in the modern day dating scene with sex becoming progressively more casual among millennials. It has led to a negative stigma associated with our dating scene, especially while we are in college with a reputation of ill-committed partners, decreased transparency and overall more dishonesty than most have received from potential partners in the past. Matt Rackett, a School of Arts and Sciences junior, believes social media-supported dating is what is causing this misunderstanding on love and commitment. “It’s all really just an over-emphasis on lust and it causes the whole stigma,” Rackett said. “Social media is causing false expectancy in relationships, and is corrupting our ideals of what love is.”

Now, does the issue fall within our biological imperative to have sex, coupled with having the resources to make it happen with no strings attached? Or, is it our perception of what human attraction and relationships ought to be based on? Georgeanne Casper, a School of the Arts and Sciences first-year, has a traditional view on love. “In order to have a healthy relationship, patience and unconditionally caring about your significant other are of the utmost importance,” Casper said. “In order to cope with the issues both partners will face as individuals or as a couple, recognizing that lust is just one aspect of the relationship is the only way that is going to happen.” Lust has consumed the modern dating age, which has caused tremendous amounts of jealousy and confusion within relationships. As young adults, we need to responsibly recognize these feelings of confusion and distrust, and communicate them to our partners.
