FROM AL DERIENZO WHO FORWARDED OFF THE NET, AUTHOR UNKNOWN
We have a cockpit mock-up in our house: When I mention to my wife that I miss flying, by being retired, she puts me in the mock-up around bed time for 8 hours. She has a chair in a closet, puts on the vacuum cleaner to simulate cockpit air noise, has a dim nite-lite to simulate cockpit lighting, serves luke-warm chicken with cold vegetables on a tray. When I get sleepy and attempt to doze off, she knocks twice loudly on the door to simulate the F/As entering the cockpit. Then after 6 hours she turns on a flood light directly in front of me to simulate the sun coming up when approaching 20 west. I then get a cup of coffee that has been in the coffeemaker all night. Finally she lets me out and I have to get in the back seat of her car while she runs morning errands to simulate the bus ride to the hotel. When we get home I tell her I am ready for bed and the bedroom door is locked for an hour to simulate the hotel rooms not being ready. When I promise to never "complain" about being retired, I am allowed to enjoy my "layover" and go to bed. Oh, and one more thing, she talks to her friends loudly outside the bedroom door to simulate the hotel maids chattering in the hall in their native language. After two hours of sleep she calls the phone next to the bed from her cell and says "This is TWA operations, you are non-routine—vee vill calla-you back vhen you have legal rest—and, by the way, the company has filed for bankruptcy today—haff good sleep." x

FROM
Piece of Aviation History for October 19 1953 - TWA begins the first non-stop eastbound scheduled transcontinental service using Super Constellations. The flight from Los Angeles to New York takes 8 hours. However because of prevailing head winds, the westbound transcontinental service continues to make a refuelling stop in Chicago. Piece of Aviation History for October 21 1929 - The Dornier DoX established a record by taking off with 169 people on board, including 10 crew, at Lake Constance. The DoX was initially powered by 12 391 kW (524 hp) Siemens-built Bristol Jupiter radial engines (six tractor propellers and six pushers), mounted in six tower nacelles on the wing, but these proved to be unsuitable and were replaced the following year with 455 kW (610 hp) Curtiss Conqueror water-cooled 12cylinder inline engines. It had an all-duralumin hull, with wings composed of a steel-reinforced duralumin framework covered in heavy linen fabric and coated in aluminium paint. [Bet the pilots did not look forward to PCs with that dreaded ten engine approach! - Ed.] Piece of Aviation History for October 24 2003 - Concorde makes its last scheduled commercial flight after 27 years service. The BA flight from New York to London, cost passengers £9,000 a ticket, reached 1,350mph (2,172 kph) and 60,000 feet (18,288 metres) over the Atlantic. Piece of Aviation History for October 25 1930 - The first American coast to coast air service (New York – Los Angeles) is established by Transcontinental Western Air (TWA). Using Fokker Tri-motors, the trip took 36 hours with an overnight stop in Kansas City. In October 1953 TWA introduced the first non-stop coast to coast…[See above—Ed.] Piece of Aviation History for November 4 1909 - John Moore-Brabazon (1884-1964) made the first live cargo flight by aeroplane at Shellness, Leysdown, Kent in England. Tying a waste-paper basket to a wing-strut of his Voisin airplane and using it as a "cargo hold", he airlifted one small pig. He named the pig Icarus the second and used the flight to disprove the old saying that pigs can't fly! Piece of Aviation History for November 24 1955- First flight of the Fokker F.27 Friendship. Originally designed as a replacement for the DC 3, 793 units had been built when production ended in 1987. 207 of the total were built by Fairchild in the United States. [Any ex-OZ pilot feel like writing a piece for us on flying the F-27? Would love to hear from you. - Ed.] PAGE 58 ... TARPA TOPICS
