MORE ON
FROM JIM SCHMITT
I recently read an article in Air & Space magazine (Jan. 2013) and was happily surprised to see Astronaut Rusty Schweikart pictured on p. 65. About 45 years ago I drove him and the black mayor of Harlem and also a black Rabbi, thru the streets of Harlem to visit three schools where Rusty gave 'inspirational' talks. I had borrowed a white Cadillac Convertible from my Pontiac Dealer in Freehold [NJ] for the occasion and it was top down weather so we did it in style! I was East Coast Coordinator for the 'Go TWA' Program, which elicited news articles, cover of

Time Magazine (my name was inside...) and ultimately got me Captain of the Year for JFK in 1971. The program was sponsored by TWA ALPA Pilots and got great publicity because it was Capt. Jim Schmitt TWA 1956-1983 a UNION program supporting a COMPANY - rather unheard of in industry. The reason we did it was that TWA was crying 'Poverty!' again, at union negotiations. ALPA ran a check and found TWA really was close to bankrupcty. At the time I was the elected ALPA rep for JFK (the largest domicile, with almost 1000 flight crew out of 3200 at the time) and when the the job came up I saw the possibilities and took it along with my other ALPA jobs. You kids may remember me at my manual portable typewriter in the basement of 1 Forsgate Drive. Anyway, the call came in, day before, from GO TWA. "Can you go into NYC tomorrow morning to drive Astronaut Schweikart to several schools in Harlem?" I answered Yes immediately, called my Pontiac dealer who said they had a white Caddy Convertible and will get it washed. And, 'No Charge' for the trip.. Bright and early next morning with the top up - it was just a bit chilly - I rushed into Harlem to rendezvous at a church. We met inside and the talk soon went to 'Who's going to drive the Astronaut?' with several HEAVY offers. I suddenly realized that me - a TWA Captain - would look pretty dumb driving in a motorcade with the Astronaut in someone else's car. So I left the conversation, double parked my Caddy by the front door of the church, and proceeded to put the top down. When the still arguing contingent walked out I was right in their faces...End of argument! We loaded up and I followed another auto thru the streets to the three schools. I sat outside while Rusty went in for his talks. There was some news coverage in the local paper, perhaps on the telly, also. And, my Caddy with the Astronaut got top billing. And so, Boys and Girls, thatĘźs how old Jim Schmitt got to drive a White Cadillac Convertible, with the top down, thru the streets of Harlem, with (continued on p. 20)
