About the Firm

A Line Studio is an architectural firm that was established in 2016 by two former coworkers who are now partners, Principal Architects Ar. Sachin Raj and Ar. Anand P. Suresh.

Firm specialises in creating functional and visually beautiful environments for both residential and commercial building. Sustainability is one of A Line Studio’s main areas of emphasis. The design team understands the significance of creating spaces that are not only attractive but also environmentally and energy-friendly. They use cutting-edge materials to reduce their projects’ negative environmental effects and design livable, healthy spaces for their users.

In addition to sustainability, A Line Studio also places a strong emphasis on functionality and aesthetics. They work closely with clients to understand their needs and preferences, and then use their expertise to craft designs that meet those needs while also being visually appealing. From small renovations to large-scale new builds, the team at A Line Studio,Kanhangad has the skills and experience to handle projects of all sizes and types.

BEKAL BEACH RESORT

Hospitality Project

Location: Kanhangad, Kerala Area: 4.75 Acres

Beach View Cottages

This Project consists of various block main Entrance Block and Beach view cottages. I Worked on various stages on both the Blocks. Every block need to be done in various iterations for finalising the form and spaces.

In Beach view Cottages, These are various units of cottages which has a view towards beach and different functionality like, The slope of the roof is kept in such a way that it can be easily accessible and covered by sand which gives a feeling of continuity of the beach but in different level of height.

Structural system and Material used is also main aspect for this blocks because the proposal required a temporary structure. We provided Minimal steel truss with Corrugated sheet as covering and then covered by sand and, For Walls Bamboo sheets were used.

Bamboo plywood sheets were used as walls because it is very light in weight and very durable in any weather conditions and, it is also recycled material.

Main Block

Main block consists of various Elements like Entrance, Roof Covering for cottages and Access towards beach.

Materials and Structural system was again a key role for this block and blend of one covering to other Which took various iterations .

Edge Coverings

Thicker Bamboo is used to cover the edges to give a clean edges.

Bamboo sheets are used for covering the structural unit and then covered by thatch.

A HOUSE WITHIN

Residential Project

Location: Kanhangad, Kerala

Area: 250 sq.m.

BLOCK FORMATION

Existing Site with gradual slop towards the North. Site contains lot of trees, vegetation and large group of rocks.

Adding a block resting on existing rocks in site and creating an entrance stairs along side of the rocks. Block contains living area and kitchen spaces.

Addition of one more block for bedrooms and recrational area. Both the blocks are of steel structure.

Vertical circulation. staircase to access the bedroom at first floor level.

3D Model Making

Created whole site 3d model accurately according to the vegetation in real site. Designing on this site took various steps like placement of blocks and and connection of those blocks and then blending them to the existing vegetation in site.

Creating connection between two blocks in form a bridge. Open courtyard between the blocks and bridge.

This is a residential project in which the site plays a significant role. The site consists of various elements such as contours with a gradual slope toward the north and existing Laterite Rock boulders. The Site is surrounded by a dense forest, which is a unique feature as a peaceful neighbourhood for a residential building. The design's initial goal was to preserve the site's existing topography, which aided in placing the blocks and blending the various spaces together.

Interior spaces are designed in such a way that they retain their contextual value, which is critical in a residential project surrounded by dense topography. At the same time, materials used in interiors evoke a connection to natural elements.

While designing exterior spaces, every existing element on site was considered, such as Laterite rock boulders, which are also used as an informal living space, and creating entrance steps alongside the rocks, as well as materials used for steps that are similar to rock and soil.

CLIFF RAYS COTTAGES

Hospitality Project

Location: Kudiyanmala, Kerala

Area: 1820 sq.m.

This is a Hospitality Project which already have a block which is an existing residence of Client, on top of which 3 lightweight cottages need to be placed and tents on other parts of site. Site itself have various levels as contours with huge height differences.

I worked on Design evolution of the existing block and cottages on top of that. Various iterations took place, Like Space Division and connection of This block to the contour level. STAGE 1

CHIKBALLAPUR FARMSTAYS

Hospitality Project

Location: Chikkaballapur, Karnataka

Area: 60 sq.m. (each plot)

This project is that of a farmstay, to be situated on a 21.3x25m plot in Chikkaballapur. The concept was conceived with a broader vision of building with what is around. Hence, the first and foremost component of the built, the foundation itself is to be made up of boulders, locally acquired from around the site.

The flooring, the walls, the roof and all such structural components all intentionally use materials so as to break the barrier of what’s inside and outside. The landscape plays an important role in adding to the whole design language. The overall idea is to use tropical and indigenous species while creating a composition with colours, heights and densities as per the need of the spaces. Some of the plants used include heliconia, alocasia, calathea lutea, ferns etc. There are natural boulders arranged as focus points at intentional locations throughout the landscape.

WATERSCAPES

Hospitality Project

Location: Kottayam, Kerala

Area: 115 Acres (Including bird sanctuary)

Work Process

Ths is a Hospitality Project, Which is an existing Resort KTDC Waterscapes which is needed to be Revamped by G-20, This Site also of a Bird sanctuary which is known as biggest bird sanctuary in Kerala.

For Revamping Various Elements need to be added, Like Entrance need to have a complementary element to the bird sanctuary, And the Block at entrance facade need to have various changes or covering, And Pathway towards resort requires more parking and covering for pedestrians, And Few other changes for Cottages in resort.

Interpretation centre Facade

Different angular vertical members are used to create wave on front elevation and also acts as covering for the

Entrance Gate

Vertical Bamboo members are used for entrance as a covering for existing gate along the bridge next to it.

Pathway

Worked on Pedestrian Pathway for entry to the resort different iterations were done with materials and shape othe pathway.

Worked on Gazebo structure which will act as a connection from entrance to lake view outdoor seating area.

YOUNG ARCHITECTS FESTIVAL - 2022

The Indian Institute of Architecture in Calicut hosted the Young Architects Festival in 2022. A Line Studio was shortlisted in three of the seven categories for which they applied. We interns had the opportunity to work on almost every stage, until we proudly earned the title of Best Architectural Detailing Firm and a commendation for Best Living Spaces. Worked on presnation sheets and videos for the projects that shortlsited.

The atmosphere fostered a sense of belonging while also encouraging individuality. It was a great oppurtunity to be participate the function and it was an eye-opening to travel to Calicut and be present amongst essentially the future of architecture.
