L: Commissioned Illustration R: Entry for “Voice of Art” contest by Vivel, India (shortlisted)

The brief was to illustrate four friends spending a relaxing evening on a gazebo, featuring elements from their lives - a boardgame, a frequently spotted, shady aeroplane and a pet dog.

8

On choice and being told “One cannot do it all” The brief was to create something empowering for women with the spirit of no compromises (“Ab Samjhauta Nahi”). The illustration shows a woman who refuses succumb to one choice for the fear of missing out on others. The distressed expression shows her determination to follow her heart despite difficulty.

I have a sudden urge of being on a train, maybe it’s the urge of being in a cradle rock-a-by I wish it was raining this is perhaps a craving for static a combination would be ideal a train cutting through a downpour. My compartment has to be a Japanese home complete with tatamis and shoji I’ll make do with the whirring trees for my Zen garden mountains for sculptures: a rocking, moving home perfect to sit in, perfect to lie on the floor amorphous like the glass. I will dissolve into the patter of static against the window and then into the sway of my moses’ basket until there is no until until everything in me saturates with a quiet of the outside and I exist only there.

How must a man’s heart thirst for his depressions to seek which he reaches again and again to sources that scooped him out in the first place How famished the inner child unsatiated, unloved aware of the hands that pierced holes in him drained him of all things soft stole his innocence robbed him of sensitivity left him locked in yearning for respite with an urge to proof ‘You broke me but I became someone look, how I flap for you to see, I am someone now will you love me with your little heart, please?’

To those who have trouble falling asleep those whose eyes are but canoes at the edge of the shore No amount of buoyancy enough to lure them in so for once they can stop wobbling over the jitter the waves are composed of and start floating over the quiet lid of slumber I say Stop trying Open your eyes I have heard it tires them out until they’re left with no choice but to fall shut even though the struggle is about the resistance exerted by the gusts of thoughts that drive the waves away, breaking them down to ripples always in the opposite direction Tonight I have decided to pour them out turn poetry into a turbine well aware that the produce will be little as Sripples can give but enough to console me tomorrow when I struggle sleepless through the day
