MANDIBULAR ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY

ABOUT The term "mandibular osteotomy" refers to surgery on the lower jaw (mandible). When your lower jaw protrudes or recedes sufficiently, it's usually done. This improves the way the jaws and teeth work by correcting abnormalities in the jawbones and realigning them. These changes may also help to improve your facial look. When performed by a skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeon in consultation with an orthodontist, jaw surgery is generally safe.

PROCEDURE Oral and maxillofacial surgeons do jaw surgery. Surgical procedures are frequently performed under general anaesthesia. The surgery is performed in a hospital setting and requires a two- to four-day stay. Surgery is normally done inside the mouth, so no scars on the chin, jaw, or around the mouth are visible. However, tiny incisions outside your mouth may be required on occasion.

AFTER SURGERY Your doctor will give you instructions after the surgery. Typical examples include: What you are allowed to eat Oral hygiene is important. Tobacco abstinence Keeping away from rigorous activities Pain-relieving medications When should you go back to work or school, which is normally one to three weeks?
