CAUSES OF CONDITION The specific cause of psoriatic arthritis is unknown. Psoriatic arthritis affects 40% of people who have a family member who has psoriasis or arthritis, implying that heredity may play a role. Psoriasis is not infectious in and of itself, but it can be induced by a streptococcal throat infection, sometimes known as strep throat.
DIAGNOSIS Rheumatologists look for swollen and painful joints, specific arthritis patterns, and psoriasis-like skin and nail changes to diagnose psoriatic arthritis. X-rays are frequently used to check for joint injury. To examine the joints in greater detail, MRI, ultrasonography, or CT scans can be employed.
TREATMENT The severity of pain, edoema, and stiffness determines how psoriatic arthritis is treated. Those with mild arthritis may only need medication when their joints hurt, and they can stop when they feel better. As a first line of defence, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications are employed.
