about me

I am a recent graduate from New Zealand, now living in Amsterdam after a university exchange in the south of Germany and a brief stint in Berlin. I’m now looking for a creative position (job or internship) in Product Design in Amsterdam. I believe it is important to have a wide understanding of many different subjects, and the skills to bring that in to a project. For me, what is relevant or inspirational can be the most unexpected thing. My design process is defined by the space around it. Whether 2D or 3D, how people move around it and react to it is what drives me to create. I’m interested in the spaces people inhabit and how I can manipulate or add to that to create an experience, and am really looking forward to the career path that this will take me down.

A naturally inspired speaker created using the materials and technological expertise of Bang & Olufsen.

BIRCH

2012-13

After extensive brand research, I realised neither Bang & Olufsen nor their competitors released any outdoor speakers that would appeal to B&O’s customer base. I decided to address this gap in their product portfolio. Wanting a natural form, without straying too far from existing B&O bestsellers, the main inspiration for my project was that of birch trees. B&O’s wireless speaker technology enhanced this idea with the possibility of having multiple Birch Speakers to create a forest of sound around the landscape. Using B&O‘s expertise in anodized aluminium, I integrated the natural inspiration with the hard, weather proof material.

BIRCH

Let’s take this outside. We’ve taken the Bang & Olufsen sound out. Out in to the elements. Completely waterproof, the Beolab B’s naturally inspired form will become a part of your landscape. Except your landscape will sound better than anyone elses.

Positive and negative space dictates where items required for study can be placed, with the risk of losing items that don’t belong. Tom Chau

LOSS TABLE

Through research and observation, we discovered that students kept their study space more organised at University than at home because of a perceived risk of losing their personal items. Loss aversion refers to people’s tendency to strongly prefer avoiding losses to acquiring gains. We used loss aversion principles to persuade the user in to being more organised in their study at home.

LOSS TABLE

Using a CNC router, we ensured a perfect fit for a laptop, lamp, A4 notebook or studybook and writing tools. The bookstand featured a slide away extension, for open or larger books, and was placed on an angle. These features both eliminated the possibilty for any distractions. The Loss Table is completely modular, allowing for changes in size and shape depending on the computer or other necessary study materials.

TRINK-IT

Designed to be used in a boutique jewelery store, the patron can see the ring being created and fired as they wait, creating both a precious object and a precious experience. We used a rotating spindle printing platform, a big change from traditional 3D printers. Each step up in the spindle represented a ring size, thus preventing waste or the need for re-sizing.

TISCHGRILLE

Inspired by communal eating habits from all over the world, we designed multiple functions for the Tischgrille, including grilling, frying, steaming, and warming. The modules can be stacked up or left out, depending on what is necessary for the meal, so as not to waste table space. We also used a wide range of materials including ceramic, cast iron, stone, steel and bamboo depending on the function of the modules.
