Guide to creating safe spaces

We can’t always control our surroundings but there is a lot you can do to make yourself feel as safe as possible. Here’s a list of things you can prepare and do to make a keep yourself safe, created by other Community Voice Partners to help you.

Things I can do to keep myself safe

• access mental health support • set goals • self-reflection • hobbies • self-care • manage expectations • articulate support needs and request appropriate accommodations • develop self-confidence • be kind to myself

COMMUNICATION • recognise negative internal self-talk • reach out to peers for support • ask lots of questions • understand audience and tailor what I say appropriately • practice, practice, practice

UNDERSTAND

• understand my own limitations • respect my own goals • understand possible negative outcomes for me • value my own self-worth • understand other’s curiosity and perspectives • understand I don’t have all the answers and that’s ok • have an open mind • remember I am not alone

PREPARATION

• do pre-reading • control my own story • be keen to learn • prepare and take lots of notes • knowing what time I can commit • set and stick to my own boundaries • try to meet people where they are at

ENVIRONMENT • be aware of privacy needs (my own and other people’s) • comfortable temperature • clean • organised • full stomach • take regular breaks • be aware of breathing and emotions • communicate needs prior to session • avoid distractions and try to be present
