ANNUAL Prizes & AWARDS 2020

T

he spring brings with it time for reflection and celebration of the year gone by— perhaps this year more than ever. This time of year, I find myself so proud to be a part of our School by the Sea as we come together to celebrate our values: love of learning, high achievement, care for others, commitment to the community. This year in particular, we might add to that list resilience, agility, fortitude, and sheer endurance. In this publication, we recognize several dozen students for their significant accomplishments—in the community, in classrooms, on the stage and the athletic surfaces, in studios and elsewhere. Their achievements are substantial, and we are proud of their work. Though we can’t be together under the waterfront tent to honor these accomplishments, we have so very much to celebrate. Perhaps this spring more than any other, when we could not be together, we learned to fully appreciate and value those unique gifts that each of us contributes to our community. We have learned the strength and significance of our personal connections to others, what it means to be there for one another, to reach out for support, to feel vulnerable and frustrated, to rise to a challenge. It surely has not always been easy, and yet we have made it here— together. For our seniors, this spring is particularly bittersweet. An anticipated end, but not the one envisioned. A future they’re anxious to get to, but one looking less certain than it might have a few months ago. Though this week marks the end of one Tabor journey for the Class of 2020, more fittingly, it’s the beginning of another as graduates and alumni— a relationship that we hope will continue to deepen for many years to come. With gratitude and admiration for the lessons learned, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the many, many Zoom calls completed, I congratulate every one of us for the good work and good growth of the year gone by. Eileen Marceau, Associate Head of School, Academic Affairs

Department awards are decided by consensus of the department faculty, and seek to honor students who model the values of the school in their approach to the discipline. In addition to their outstanding performance, classroom engagement and obvious love of learning, these students consistently approach each class, reading, or assignment as an opportunity to further their understanding and fuel their passion for the subject.

THE TABOR PURCHASE PRIZE Yifan (William) Wu ‘20 In order to recognize general excellence in the visual arts over the course of a Tabor career, Tabor’s Art Department established a Purchase Prize in 2016. The school purchases a piece of noteworthy artwork from a graduating senior in recognition of their talent, hard work, and contribution to the visual arts. This art becomes a part of the school’s permanent collection, creating an archive of exceptional student art.

William Wu’s “The Everlasting Journey Between Home and School” is an 11.5 inch, multi-layer laser cut plywood medallion. This work is the end result of an exploration that began as part of the artist’s portfolio process — from initial observation of a phenomenon to an artwork that not only embodies the nature of his personal experience, but also his creative journey between art and engineering. He created an object that represents the cyclical process of school and travel that is specific to the boarding school experience. This artwork is a physical culmination of this artist’s exploration of old tools and new tools. Drawing on his personal history, rooted in traditional Chinese water painting, and fusing it with a digital art tool box, allowed him to arrive at a destination that is really the beginning of his adventure as a creative problem solver, artist, and innovator.

Naval Honor Graduates Tabor Academy is honored to be recognized by the United States Navy as one of a very small number of Naval Honor high schools in the country. As part of that distinction, we are able to recognize with a special certificate those graduating seniors who have taken a qualifying number of Nautical Science and related courses over their Tabor careers. The following members of the Class of 2020 will graduate with Naval Honors: Cooper Carlson Colin Ferguson Louis (Fin) Franyo Garrett Horton John (Jake) Howell Kyle Jadul Bradford Jenkins Thad Lettsome

Connor Macken Peter Murray Anna Olsen Christopher Parker Reed Porter Georgia Toland Peter Stuart Wemple Henry Worden

PRESENTATION OF THE SCHOONER FLAG Louis (Fin) Franyo As the Executive Officer (XO) aboard Tabor Boy this year, Fin Franyo has shown service and dedication to the Tabor Boy program as the student leader of the schooner’s crew. His year of leadership was cut short by circumstances beyond anyone’s control, but he firmly established his legacy in three short months during the fall of 2019. At the close of each year, the departing XO is awarded with perhaps the most meaningful and significant symbol the program has to offer—the American flag that has flown proudly and freely from the vessel’s stern staff throughout the previous year. Fin’s service will be remembered as not only as the work of a highly capable XO, but also one that is respected and loved by his crew. This is true leadership. Capt. James Geil

On any given day, you might find Cat on Duffy 3, taking shots against the goalkeepers or dribbling around cones in a full sprint. You might even catch her sending a football through the uprights, just for kicks. You might find her shooting free throws in the Stone Gym or dragging a lacrosse goal out to improve her game. As a competitor, she is tough, tenacious, unwilling to be beaten, always seeking to improve her game. But whenever her individual successes are highlighted, she is quick to turn the attention to how none of that success is obtainable without her teammates. And she has enjoyed great success: Gatorade MA Player of the Year, Boston Globe All-Scholastic, All USA First Team, 3-time All-American, and NEPSAC Class B Champion after a clutch free kick goal sent the game into OT, and she’s even played for the US Women’s National Team. An extraordinary talent, she stands out for her competitive drive and unwavering commitment to team.

Intensity, positivity, physicality and toughness are four words coaches used to describe Omar. This 3-sport athlete ranks among the top squash players in New England. But perhaps his greatest contribution comes from his leadership and team spirit, earning him the all-ISL individual sportsmanship award and the respect of both his teammates and opponents. Watching Omar give his all – diving to make a save in a soccer goal, powerfully thumping a forehand along the rail of a squash court, or lunging to reach a tennis ball before it bounced twice – is a treat for any spectator. Anyone who takes on Omar knows they are in for a battle, but he also keeps the competition in perspective, becoming friendly with players from other teams throughout the season. He thinks of the betterment of the team before himself. Indeed, every team of which he is a part is better with his presence and contribution, his incredible talent and tremendous heart.

Member schools may induct up to 20% of a graduating class based on their high scholastic achievement, citizenship, and character. The Tabor Academy Chapter of the Cum Laude Society was established in 1930, and since that time, well over 1,000 Tabor graduates have been honored with Cum Laude distinction. Class of 2020 Award Citations THE HAMILTON WEBSTER THAYER PRIZE

ISABELLE CHENEY

The Hamilton Webster Thayer Prize is awarded each year to a student who, in the estimation of the faculty, best represents the ideals of the Academy: love of learning, high achievement, personal responsibility, and care for others. Izzy is talented as a student and an athlete. More impressively, she consistently strives to be a dedicated community member and an incredible friend. Indeed, it is her empathy and quiet consideration for others that set her apart. Her inclination is always toward what she can do to help her family, friends, teachers, and coaches. It is a remarkable trait that is often attributed to those whom we fondly remember. To see it in action, every day, from someone so young, makes a strong impression. Izzy approaches every aspect of school with a true zest for learning and yes, the achievement has been high. Her sense of responsibility is only topped by her concern for others. She brings the persistence and heart of a distance runner to all she does. She has a thoughtfulness and kindness to her that we may all aspire to and sometimes achieve, yet she never turns it off.

HEAD OF SCHOOL’S AWARD

JOSé SULAIMAN MANZUR The Head of School’s award recognizes “general excellence” across multiple domains. José’s Tabor career sets a worthy example, demonstrating selflessness, and dedication to community and the greater good. He has inhabited traditional leadership roles with aplomb—freshman and sophomore class president, dorm proctor, team captain. He is a gifted student in multiple disciplines, trilingual, and easily one of the most talented coders we have seen at Tabor in years. But beyond any role he might inhabit, or talents he may enjoy, José’s excellence shines through the example he sets for others. He is the kind of person who will never ask others to do something he is not willing to do himself. In boarding schools, we often celebrate those who “run at” the problem, rather than run away from it. José has shown that he does just that, not fearing a difficult conversation or the discomfort of challenging topics. A devoted peer tutor, a connected proctor, a dedicated robotics captain, and above all, a committed friend...he puts his substantial talents and gifts to a greater good. Indeed, this guy puts the “help” in “Student Help Desk.”

JONATHAN A. SMITH AWARD

EMMA QUIRK

The Jonathan A. Smith Award recognizes a senior for leadership, character, and integrity in their words and deeds. If leadership is setting an example, if character is your inclination towards others, and if integrity is what you do when no one is watching, then Emma checks each of these boxes. Her leadership responsibilities are numerous – senior class/TASC co-president, chapter head for I Am That Girl, SDLC participant, day proctor, tour guide. Consider these roles in their totality and what they show us of this student’s character: people trust her; she works hard at establishing relationships; she is unafraid to have a hard conversation or weigh in on challenging topics; she wants Tabor to be a more inclusive community. She has walked the halls of the school with humility and grace for four years; in all she has touched, Emma has been her authentic self since day one. Genuinely kind and caring, she notices people. She especially notices people when they are struggling. She reaches out and connects when people need it most, and in doing so, sets a powerful example for what it means to lead with character and lead with integrity. Emma sees people, and so many appreciate her for it.

LYNDON PAUL LORUSSO AWARD

JACK LEBRUN Frankly, there could be no other winner of the Lyndon Paul Lorusso Award this year than Jack LeBrun. The ultimate award for community, this prize honors that student who, in the opinion of the faculty, demonstrates constant care and a willingness to help. It is no exaggeration to suggest that Jack is known to all, from freshman through the most tenured faculty member. He manages somehow to be everywhere all at once, greeting everyone by name as he walks down the hall. In his advisor’s words, he is a young man of “unwavering goodwill.” In his time here, he has become an exemplar for our community standards. Need a tour guide in the summer? No problem. Student panel participant needed at the last minute? Done. Dance set up? Already there. Just carrying something awkward and need the door held? Of course. Jack is a bridge builder and a peacemaker. His endless optimism and willingness to extend himself to others in meaningful ways has truly been something that has helped bring our community together and make it stronger. In ways big and small, direct and indirect, he embodies care for others and commitment to our community.

FACULTY AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING EXTRACURRICULAR CONTRIBUTION

CATHERINE BARRY Presented to the senior who has significantly contributed to the life of the school across multiple areas, this award recognizes impact beyond the classroom. Cat’s impact on the soccer field often overshadows everything else she does here at Tabor, but those who’ve seen her in action know her strengths and contributions go well beyond soccer. Her gifts and talents are many, but it is the dedication, effort, and perseverance that she brings to each of her endeavors that make her shine. There is simply no halfway effort with Cat. A natural leader, she gains the trust and respect of her peers with or without the title. Whether making connections in the dorm, staying after practice perfecting a skill, coaching a few friends through a particularly tough problem set, working on I Am That Girl meetings and events, or showing off our campus to visitors as a head tour guide—she is always putting in the work. On a team, in the dorm, or in the classroom, Cat leads by example, and sets the bar high for others, building community through her whole-hearted participation and genuine enthusiasm.

ALUMNI AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCHOLARSHIP

CHRISTINE STEEGE The Alumni Award recognizes that student who embodies excellence in scholarship—intellectual drive and academic distinction over the course of a Tabor career. Christine dives into her work with a fierce hunger for mastery. Found in the moments before math or physics class discussing the material with a classmate, in Spanish, she expertly moves between disciplines. Her outcomes speak for themselves. In her humility, she will shrug and claim she’s just a plugger—but her teachers know better. She brings a goal-keeper’s intensity and focus to every single academic endeavor, but she has never been just a hard worker; she is, in her math teacher’s words, ”a top-tier mathematical mind.” It would be easy to pigeon-hole Christine for her substantial quantitative skills—math/science all the way. But it’s not the whole truth. She is artful with language and endlessly creative—a creativity that shines in everything from an essay, to a mathematical solution, to a Spanish project, to her lines of code. She may find comfort in the “quant zone,” but her performance at Tabor has shown her to be intellectually far-ranging. In her quiet, often intense, occasionally goofy way, this powerfully driven young scholar has been the definition of academic excellence.
