FRONT ELEVATION

For our first task of the semester we presented images of at least two elevations of a favorite small building we could enter.

6

SIDE ELEVATION

Building dimensions, length, width, and height, were obtained using Google Earth’s measuring tool.

TEAM DESIGN In week 3 of Architectural Graphics 1 we were put into teams of 5 or 6 and given a challenge to come up with a Tiny House design.

TINY HOUSE REQUIREMENTS

20

a footprint of 160 FT2 or less (i.e 8’X20’ = 160 FT2)

minimum wall thickness of 4”

no height restriction

Our team began design discussions weighing the benefits and constraints for three (3) possible dimensions; 8’x20’, 10’x16’, 12’ 6”x12’ 6”. Accounting for a 4”-6” wall thickness meant an overall loss in square footage, with an 8”- 1’ loss of floor space in each direction, so we decided on a 10’x16’ floor plan.

Team Sketch - Showing a 10’x16’ layout at ½” = 1’-0” scale. (note: oops! We ignored the scale requirement of ¼” or ⅜”)

Dimensions laid out at full scale 21

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN Following the team challenge we started a new Tiny House project of our own individual design with no change in requirements.

INSPIRATION

Inspired by the “Tall Skinny House movement around the globe, I began seeking inspiration by narrowing my search to slim, tall, contemporary structures.

24

INSPIRATION

I was drawn to sloping rooflines, three stories of front elevation picture windows with sleek, minimal facades but quickly found out the angle of the slope I’m attracted to could not be easily achieved along a mere 16’-20’ long maximum side elevation.

25

FLOOR COMPONENTS

Given these opportunities and constraints, I explored the design of a three story structure with a 1:3 ratio of width to height, front elevation picture windows, and minimal detailing inside and out.
