Changing Our World
Students across grades use their voices to make a change
Protect the Planet
By Noa Godi, Grade 3 Cough! Cough! Can you hear that? It’s a bird coughing because it’s chocking on some plastic someone threw on the beach. Every day people are treating the world badly. If you don’t want the Earth to throw some unexpectable things at us, we’ll need to help protect it. In my opinion we have to protect the planet. The first reason I think we need to protect the planet is because plastic is polluting the planet. For example, sea animals are eating plastic because they think it’s food. Plastic is washing up on beaches where birds have nested. I think to prevent these animals from dying we need to recycle, use less plastic or use NO plastic at all! Now that you know you need to use less plastic…do it! The second reason I think we need to protect the planet is that we need to replace trees when we cut them. To give you an idea, in the rainforest humans are cutting down the trees to make space for houses. This means taking an animal habitat. I strongly propose that we need to replace trees when we cut them. Lastly, I think that we need to change cars from fuel to electric. Because fuel is gas, it goes in the air and that causes pollution. For instance, in China pollution is very strong because people are using fuel cars, this means people are dying. I lived in China so I experienced that feeling; sometimes the air was so bad that we could not even open the window! I believe that if enough people change their cars there will not be any more pollution. You might be thinking that changing cars from fuel to electric is almost impossible because it costs so much money. I think it’s worth it because Earth is the only place we can live. So, now you know that we need to protect the planet. We can do it by NOT using plastic, replacing trees when we cut them, and change cars from fuel to electric.

No More Zoos!
By Sebastian Siccardi, Grade 3 Do you think it is normal to have zoos? Poor animals, I guess they will stay their whole lives in a cage, but it is their only option. What a bad life! A lot of species got extinct because of zoos. This should stop! Imagine a little monkey alone without her mother. What cruel people there are in this world! My opinion is we have to stop having zoos. My main reason is that instead of a little cage animals should have a big open space to run and play. To take animals to their cages they need to shoot them so the fall asleep. When they wake up, they are sad and never go back to their family. Another reason is that zoos are busy and noisy and that terrifies the animals, so people get scared. For example, if a baby is crying and the mom tries to get him quiet it is noisy and busy. I still don’t get why they are terrifying the animals of the earth. So, next time you go to a zoo be quiet. The last reason is that it is not their environment. The last time I went to Zurich to the zoo it was snowing and there was a lion in a tub of snow, poor lion. In Miami there were penguins in 32 degrees. Stop! I know some people love zoos because you see animals, but you could go on a safari and you could have a closer look. Others will say that you can see more animals, but there is a cage in zoos, not in safaris. All in all, if you keep animals in their habitat, they will be more free and calm. If they are in zoos it is annoying. So, if you are an important person, go to the president and say, “Stop zoos!”
Stop Cutting Trees!
Stop Killing Plants!
Bzzz! “No! Stop cutting trees! Look at the poor koala!” I think we are cutting too many trees; we must stop, stop, stop cutting trees. The first reason why we should not cut trees is that it kills animals’ habitats. I love animals, I think you do too. If you cut down trees it’s like if crocodiles are eating your home! So animals have to run away fast. And what if there is an emergency? Mom can’t save them all! Animals make their homes in the wild and they can’t go to zoos. For example, koalas stay on trees, what if a man just comes and cuts down the tree that the koala is sleeping on? Imagine that you are a koala and somebody just comes in and cuts the tree that you’re sleeping on. That’s not fair. I believe we should not cut animal habitats because those are the places they live. The second reason why I think we should not cut down trees is that we are cutting our oxygen resources, and without oxygen we can’t breathe! So we need to leave trees alone! Half of the trees in the world are dying, so stop! Without trees there will be no life. Pretend you are a tree with your family and a man cuts you down, that’s sad. So as you can see, stop cutting trees or we will have no oxygen! The final reason is that you are destroying the beauty of the world! Think about a world without trees, how horrible it must be. Now look out of your window, you must see so many trees! Imagine what the world would be without trees, we would be like the Moon, or Mercury! As you can see, we need to stop cutting trees to keep the beauty of the world! Some companies might say that homes made out of wood are better, but no, cement is much better even when it rains. To conclude, if we don’t cut trees animals will be happy, we would have more oxygen, the world would be beautiful, and there would be more trees. Now go to your parents and tell them not to cut down trees!
“Bam! Crash!” That was the sound of gardeners cutting down a tree. Hearing that sound makes my heart sad. In my opinion everyone should NOT kill plants! The main reason I think you should not kill plants is that if you kill plants there would be no oxygen. If there is no oxygen we can not breathe, if we do not breathe then no person would live on our planet and with no person living on the planet, it would probably die and we do not want that to happen. For example: I’ve seen gardeners cutting down trees and that makes me sad, they are taking a bit of our oxygen. My second reason is that if you kill plants there will be no beauty in the world. And in my opinion nature is what makes the world beautiful. If people continue polluting, the plants will continue dying and that takes the beauty out of the world, and that makes me sad. The world is our home and we need to take care of our planet by nor killing plants, so we can live on the planet for much longer and the world can keep its beauty. To show you what I mean I’ve been in the forest and I’ve seen trash and cut down trees. If you do not kill plants not only I will be happy but everyone will, also you, to see the beauty of the world. So you can see you should not kill plants. My last reason is that if you kill plants you destroy animal habitats, and if you did not know that if you destroy animal habitats animals could die, now you do! Animals NEED a home like all of us. Did you know? Well, good that now you do. It makes me mad, sad, furious, and un-impressed all at once! For instance I’ve looked on the news and seen pandas hurt or dead found on the road because they did not have a home. So do you really want to kill all this nature? Well I do not, and that is why I stand up for animals, nature, and the planet! All in all now you see you should not kill nature. Someone might say, “But the grass is too tall.” But I think it’s better to have tall grass than kill it. Finally, if you do not kill plants there would be oxygen, beauty, and animals. Now go to your parents and tell them not to kill plants.

Changing Our World
Pollution Kills!
By Bianca Della Foglia, Grade 3 Every time I go outside to eat I see a lot of trash on the ground. So in my opinion we shouldn’t throw trash on the ground anymore. Trash is torturing our world. So we need to stop polluting right now. The first reason why we need to stop polluting is because it is hurting our environment. Earth is really suffering because we are throwing trash and masks on the ground and we are using so many cars. Earth is suffering because of this, we should stop it right now. If pollution doesn’t stop we probably could die. So stop polluting. There are ways we can help our environment. For example throw masks in the bin. I believe we should stop polluting because it is hurting our environment. The second reason why we need to stop polluting is because it’s killing animals. For example, turtles think that trash is food so they eat it and because of this they die. For example birds get stuck in nets and they die because it strangles them. Killing animals makes me feel sad. As you can see we should stop polluting because animals are dying. The third reason why we need to stop polluting is because it’s hurting humans. Cars are creating pollution and the gas that they make we breath. We will remain with no oxygen and we will die. Gas is really toxic so if we breathe it we could probably die, or we have to go to the hospital and it’s not fun going to the hospital. So we should really stop polluting. We should not use too many cars for driving. For example, Noa walks to school, she does not use her car. So you could walk to places, too. All in all, we should stop pollution because it’s hurting humans and humans are going to the hospital. Some people might say we can’t travel without cars, planes, and trucks. To those people I will say you could use electric cars or fly less, or use cars less. Some people might say that pollution is good. However pollution is not good because animals are dying and humans are going to the hospital for that. All in all, if pollution stops animals won’t get killed and humans won’t go to the hospital anymore. Our environment won’t be suffering anymore.

Animals Make Our Lives Better By Beatrice Valvano, Grade 4
Di Bianca Della Foglia, Grade 3
Di Nicole Unzeitig, Grade 3
Many people don’t realize how important animals are or can be, but I’ve come to know that their lives matter just as much as ours do. You probably have no idea how much these animals do for us, did you know animals can make you fitter? Or did you know they can improve your health in a lot of ways? You probably didn’t, so get ready to learn why I believe animals make our lives better. I also believe this is true because animals make food for us to eat, and they contribute to make objects and by working which makes our lives easier. So by the end of this essay you’ll believe what I do. For example, people like tuna and they eat tuna fish with a lot of different things because it is very healthy. If we couldn’t eat different types of fish, our diets would not be as healthy. Not only do people like tuna, but they also like salmon, cod, and sea bass. Another example why I believe animals make our lives better is because according to the site Animal Ethics, billions and billions of fish die every year from fishing just for us to eat them. If this goes on all fish breeds could be lost forever and may be extinct. Animals make our lives better because they’re food for us to eat. For example, every week I go horseback riding and I wear leather boots, which makes riding more comfortable and it protects my legs. Without such boots I would hurt my legs. All riders wear boots to protect their legs as well. Leather is produced using different types of skins such as sheep, goats, calves, pigs, and horses. Another example why I believe animals make our lives better is because acording to the site Toknow, cows and oxes help pull heavy farm machines and farmers also use horses for faster transportation and to haul the fruit and vegetables. This is also why animals make our lives better, they work for us. Now that you know why I believe that animals make our lives better you should too. They are always there for us, and we are not there for them, we should respect them just like gold because they improve our life massively. This is true because animals make food for us to eat, and they contribute to make objects, and by working which makes our lives easier. Now do you believe me ?

The Dream
by Tommaso Bonadonna, Grade 4 I was walking home from school thinking about the day when I ordered my RC BOAT, and hoping it would arrive, when at the front door I saw a package. It was a beautiful package. All nice and shiny. This was definitely an important package. But there was something weird. It had a photo of an RC BOAT. Was it my dream? I was super excited. “Mom, can I open this package?” I said. “Ok,” my mom suspiciously said. I got my scissors. I tore off the tape and used all my strength to destroy the box, like a giant ripping a banana peel. Then my dream came true. I got the boat, and it was so shiny. My eyes almost couldn’t look at it for its beauty. After ten minutes (which I used to study the boat ) I got the fantastic charger and battery and “click” it was charging. After about 30 minutes I unplugged the battery and put the battery in the boat. I was so excited. Before going, just in case, I tried the boat outside the water. I connected the remote to the boat, I opened my eyes and, no . IT DID NOT WORK!!! I was breathing like a tornado and my heart was pounding like a hammer. What I always wanted turned out to be a disaster. Hopeless I went back to the instructions AND what I saw saved me; “charge boat AT LEAST 4 hours”. “Oooooooooooooooooh,” I said. I ran to my room and plugged in my battery pack. Five hours later, “Daddy lets go to the lake,” I screamed. “Ok, under one condition. YOU WILL LET ME TRY THAT THING,” yelled my dad “Ok,” I suspiciously said. “Let’s go”. When I arrived at the freezing lake of the Alps, I started to attach the battery to the boat. I put the boat in the water and zooooooooooooooooooom the boat went 35kmh. I was exploding with joy. It went 500 meters far!!!! I was amazed. Thirty minutes later, “Dad. The boat is not working.” “Let me check. Ooooooooh. The battery DIED!!!” my dad strongly said. “Nooooooooooooooooooooo,” I screamed. I felt the joy drip out of my body and the sadness rise like a thermometer. I was desperate. But suddenly a lightbulb appeared on my head. “I will go swim in there,” I said. “Well, we do have extra clothes and a towel in the car. I guess you could do it,” my dad slowly
said. Without thinking, I jumped into the water. Splash. The water was freezing. I couldn’t feel my bones. I started swimming like a shark after its prey. All the people were looking at me as if I was a crazy chicken running in the street. Suddenly I felt something touch my leg. “A PIRANHA,” I screamed. I was about to faint. When I saw it was the boat, I was so relieved. I got it and swam back to solid ground. When I arrived I started kissing the ground. One minute later, “T-Tomm-y - I think you can stop kissing the ground,” my dad slowly said. “Okey dokey,” I quickly said. Then, I ran as fast as the gale of wind into the car, and launched myself onto the towel, and just sit there all nice and cozy. Ring, ring. “Hey guys, hurry up. We need to have lunch,” my mum virtually shouted. “Okey dokey,” my dad cheerfully said. “Ok Tommy. I guess the adventure had a successful ending.” “Oh yes, and most importantly, the boat is safe. For now.”

Personal narrative and illustration By Leonardo Tulli, Grade 2
In my first symbol I have a king. He was important because he ruled the country/ state and without the king it would be hard to make decisions. He wore crowns and jewelry. Kings also wore expensive clothes. They were also the highest ranking in feudalism. Also the king was super important to the Middle Ages. The color blue means loyalty, truth, and strength. In my second square I have a knight. Knights wore armor. Armor is metal clothes and it was super heavy. Knights also followed the Code of Chivalry. Chivalry is a rule that the knight has to follow is that knights have to respect women and follow king orders. Knights fought in war and fought for their army and for their king. My third square is the Hundred Year War. This war was because the king of France died. The King of England wanted to rule France because he was blood related to the king of France. There was a person related to him so they couldn’t decide who would become King of France so that caused the Hundred Year War. My last square shows the Black Death. It is a disease that if you got it you would die. So many people died. Millions of thousands died. Big tragedies happened in the Middle Ages and they didn’t have enough space for dead people.

People Should Know Gender Does Not Matter By Pilar Sokoloff, 4th grade Do you think girls shouldn’t play sports or get jobs or recieve a good education? People should understand that gender does not matter because girls are just as capable as boys. Girls can play sports just as well as boys can. Girls can do as well at most jobs as boys and even better than them at others! Girls are just as capable of learning and thinking and doing as boys. My first reason for arguing that gender does not matter is because girls can do sports just as well as boys. For example, in 1926 Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel, shocking the world and proving to everyone that females were incredibly athletic. In 1928 Margaret Gislo, who was the only female on the American League Junior baseball team, amazed the crowds by outplaying all the boys. Since these early days, there have been countless other examples of women outperforming men on various playing fields. Girls should be able to play whatever sports they want. The second reason that gender does not matter is that women can do most of the same jobs as men. Did you know that women played a big part in helping to win World War II? For example, women were nurses, ambulance drivers, cooks, kitchen maids, clerks, and ward-maids. They helped make the bombs and weapons used to fight on the front line. Women have jobs so they can be independent and because they can make great contributions. My final reason people should know gender does not matter is that women have incredible intelligence. Do you know that half the astronauts in space are women? Some of the best scientists, mathematicians and doctors are women. Did you know there are many leaders in the world today who are women? This proves women can go to college and earn an education just like boys can. What do you think now? Do you still think gender matters after hearing all these examples of how women excel at sports, in different professions and as students across the world?
