01 DESIGN

CONCEPT SITE

The same way abu dhabi is a complex city where all residents’ backgrounds intersect together, this center is where the old bediun city intersects with the new architectural style of the gobal city. The concept is based on 3 main aspects; First is Recalling the old corniche coastline that was 125meter away from the plot for visitors to see and for elderly people to recall their memories. Abu Dhabi used to be called as ‘Mlieh’ meaning salt in Emirati Arabi Dialect; this was because people used to come for sea related activities. The second is to Recreate the experience of walking in the old city and walk between the low-rise simple settlements like an old Bedouin. The third aspcet is that the center is designed to be the place where all multicultures come together to celebrate their identities and head together to their common future in the beautiful city of Abu Dhabi. The site is located near the corniche of Abu Dhabi. It was initially an empty parking space oppostie to Nation Towers. The site was chosen because of its rich mixed-styles surroundings. It is surrounded by the NEW (nation towers), OLD (federal National Council and other govermental buidings), GREENARY (Alkhubeirah Park), and WATER (Corniche). The response to these where the main factors that affected the design process.

1. CONNECTING MULTICULTURES | ABU DHABI CULTURAL CENTER

DESCRIPTION

This graduation project is proposed to function as a cultural center for the city of abu dhabi. A cultural center in such a multicultural city needs to balance between showcasing their cultural identity and emphasizing on tolerance and acceptance. This project was designed according to the Vision 2030 to conserve and celebrate its national identity. It houses various functions to consider all visitors tastes of activities, ranging from exhibitions, cinemas, event halls, to library, classrooms, and cafes.

The site’s landscape – Al Bateen Area – has transformed like the rest of Abu Dhabi city in the last 50 years. It was separated from Abu Dhabi’s main area as a fishing village by a large dune. To reach Al bateen area, they needed to cross the dune which was difficult for some people. Even some citizens never tried crossing it.

1. Slanted slabs; used for the library stacks, and open terraces that creates panoramic views for users looking from inside.

2. AL BATEEN PUBLIC LIBRARY | ON THE DUNE

2. The Resting pods that connect these slopes; it reflects the walking path of someone crossing the dunes and resting during this journey.

INSPIRATION CONCEPT

The library is recalling the experience of walking through a dune by 2 main elements:

SITE PLAN

The HTN Tower is based on the relationship between citizens of UAE and the values they have about the Arabian Gulf .

3. MIXED USE TOWER | HOPE, TRADE & NATURE

1. Memories of hardship & hope; back at the times of the economy depending on pearl diving.

2. Ancient trade and history; the times of changing goods between various countries through the gulf.

The Gulf represents 3 Main Values to its people.

INSPIRATION CONCEPT

3. Beauty & Nature, as it’s coast is full of beaches and cafés as well as the natural habitats like Mangroves

To represent this in the tower, A keyword from each value is reflected on the design program function. As all the three values intersect in real life, the program functions will intersect in a way to reflect this relationship. Hope represents the citizens, so it stands for the Residential Apartments. Trade represents Offices, Working spaces, and Retail. While Nature represents Entertainment, Fun , and Green spaces/Terraces.

4. ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING CENTER & ECO LODGES | UPS & DOWNS

INSPIRATION

Concept The learning center form is inspired by the sloping behavior or ups & downs of dunes systems, and also by the Neutral parts in between these dunes. The lines of which form the units are sloped towards the wind direction on site which is to the North-West direction. These differentially sloping units create shaded spots in between having the same effect of the dunes system and also creates a form that can be spotted in between the urban context buildings.

One of the most representative elements of UAE’s environment is the desert’s dunes which form 80% of its land. Dunes are huge amounts of sand blown by the wind to form an area called dune system. Dunes are temporary structures, that can be moved according to wind direction and speed.

5. VEGETABLE MARKET | EXPERIENCING THE OASIS

The site is located opposite to the remarkable Oasis of Al Ain. As you walk through an oasis, you enjoy the shaded pathways between palm tress. Those pathways differ from straight to clustered configurations. Palm trees are also unique because of their scale in comparison to human’s scale which also adds to the experience. In this Vegetable Market; the keywords: shaded, palm trees height & shape, and cluster are guiding the design concept. These keywords are implemented in 3 main elements: columns shape and intersections, heights of the market, and the distribution of functions in the plan.
