Orange Wine Region
Wines of the Orange Region have a unique style as a result of the local climate, soils and topography (terroir). The Orange Wine Region began to develop in the early 1980’s and now has over 1500 hectares (ha) of wine grapes being grown by some 80 vineyards. Over 30 wine labels are now available in the region. The Orange Region is defined as the contiguous land above 600m elevation in the local Government areas of Cabonne, Blayney and Orange City. This region is dominated by Mt Canobolas at 1396m – making Orange one of the highest wine regions in Australia. Such elevation creates a cool climate and moderate daytime maximum temperatures during ripening (February-March) which are ideal for producing premium table wines. This high country also provides for cold air drainage which minimises frosts. This region is one of the sunniest cool climate areas in Australia – an essential factor in producing high flavour wines. The 700-900mm annual rainfall is also linked to elevation and distance from Mt Canobolas. Reliable winter rains give way to an increasingly dry autumn. Soil is a major factor affecting vine growth and fruit flavours. Soil depth, water holding capacity, drainage and fertility are closely linked to vine performance. The soils of the Orange Region closely follow elevation and proximity to the extinct volcano, Mount Canobolas – the soils having evolved from various volcanic materials and/or older sediments. 5
