WELCOME TO THE SLOW SUMMER BANJO PATERSON FESTIVAL 2014 heralds the amalgamation of Slow Summer and the Banjo Paterson Festival. We will still retain the important components of Slow Summer - water, family, fun and healthy lifestyle but the hero will be Banjo Paterson, who was born in Orange 150 years ago. Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson was born at ‘Narrambla’ Orange on 17 February 1864. He lived in Yeoval until he was about 7, then moved extensively throughout NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Banjo is an Australian legend. From those early days in the Orange region, Paterson wrote......’My first impressions are of life on a mixed sheep and cattle station called ‘Buckinbah’ near Obley (this is the site of the present day town of Yeoval) in the west of New South Wales somewhere about 1868. They consist mainly of things that would appeal to a small child’s mind - the emus that came fearlessly up to the house, the wild horses that went tearing through the timber, and the long days spent out shepherding the sheep with one of the station lads.’ He studied law, was a Journalist with the Melbourne Age, wrote prolifically for Sydney and Melbourne newspapers, was a war correspondent in the Boer War where he managed the horses in the Middle East for the light horse infantry in World War 1. Banjo played all sports, had strong social and political views, and his writings depicted Australian country life during his lifetime.
