Specialty Foods CATERING • GIFTS • EVENTS 1

Dear Friends, June of 2015 marked the opening of our seventh location at Harbour View in northern Suffolk. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring the unique TASTE specialty food experience to another city in Tidewater and equally grateful for the warm reception we have received both from the City of Suffolk and our new customers. The occasion marked a nostalgic return of our family to the Suffolk business and food communities, adding to a rich legacy that began early last century when my great-grandfather, Peter Pruden, came to Suffolk to work in the peanut industry. Still young, he saw a need and established a retail grocery store to serve the south side of Suffolk. An entrepreneur to the core, he and partners established a wholesale produce operation buying locally grown melons and potatoes and shipping them throughout the northeast by train. Later, he turned the rural craft of curing country hams into a family business, with the founding of Pruden Packing Company in 1931 and also later helped establish Smithfield as the “Ham Capital of the World” as a co-founder of Smithfield Packing Company. Later, my grandfather spent his entire career growing the family business while the City of Suffolk literally grew up around our once-rural packing plant on North Main Street. After my father, Peter Pruden III, took the reins, he and a business partner grew the family business into a diverse specialty food company that included a roll call of venerable Virginia food brands, such as Peanut City, Amber, Joyner, E.M. Todd, Bunker Hill, Doughtie’s, Virginia’s Choice and The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg. After a successful run, the difficult decision to sell that business was made in 2001 and dad retired… for the first time. Fast forward to 2006 when our family had the incredible opportunity to purchase Taste Unlimited from founder Peter Coe and his family and dad happily unretired to join me, my wife Tracie and brother Taylor in a new family business. While the torch was passed, what did not change was the commitment to run TASTE as a family business. When the doors opened at the Suffolk store on June 8th, that commitment grew as my teenage son Tucker was on hand to work his very first day for the company and thereby became the 5th generation of the family to work in the specialty food business. On behalf of the entire family, we hope that you enjoy this third annual edition of The Good Life Guide. Bon Appétit!

MAHOGANY ROASTERS The world needs good coffee, that’s what they believe at Mahogany Roasters, the producers of TASTE’s Organic Borjo Blend. Paul Wynkoop and JP Cordill started their Gloucester County roastery a dozen years ago as the culmination of their search for the best cup of coffee. Paul used to professionally repair espresso machines, and he has tasted a lot of bitter, burnt or old coffee along the way. “Fresh, properly roasted beans are so important,” says Paul. Mahogany Roasters is a Fair Trade Certified roaster, and they are proud that their business helps coffee farmers in their quest for a sustainable livelihood for themselves and their children. TASTE’s coffee is small-batch roasted using Mahogany’s American-made roaster, with the care that such handpicked Fair Trade Organic beans deserve. TASTE’s blend is made from mountain-grown beans sourced in Sumatra, Peru, Ethiopia and Guatemala. Grey Ghost Bakery company founder Katherine Frankstone started baking alongside her father in the family’s Carolina Lowcountry kitchen when she was just five years old. For decades now, she has been satisfying the sweet tooth of her husband, sons and flocks of friends with her perfectly balanced crisp yet chewy cookies. In 2012, she turned her love of baking into a business, still using family recipes that have been passed down for generations, only with a sophisticated, modern twist. Her cookies are all hand-formed and use all-natural ingredients: unbleached, un-bromated flour, European-style butter, pure cane sugar, whole eggs, pure vanilla extract, cocoa, crystalized ginger, molasses, dark corn syrup (not high fructose), and premium spices. Luckily for us, some people still do things the old-fashioned way. 29

They ensure that each batch is made with the freshest ingredients and is free of preservatives and artificial flavorings, which are found in most grocery store brands. Sandra Wheeler, one of the co-founders, is an avid gardener and started dabbling in canning and pickling when she was in college. She founded Pickled Silly in 2012, along with friend Noel Johnson, who was on a mission to share the enjoyment of the perfect dilly bean with the rest of the world. When asked about what she loves most about her job, Sandra replied, “We love bringing fresh, local produce to everyone’s home. Pickling and preserving is coming back in a big way, and we want to make sure everyone can enjoy old time favorites, even the busiest people.” 30
