15 Ways to get Penalized by Google In one of my earlier post I discussed about 5 reasons for getting Google penalty which should be avoided if you want to keep your blog in good standing for search engines. There are many other issues for which you get penalized by google and once you get the same, it is very difficult to recover and restore previous search rankings. So how could you get penalty from Google? Let’s see the trending means.
15 Ways to Get Penalized by Google 1. Link Exchange Some webmasters engage with link exchange programs where they share reciprocal links with each other, means you place a link for his site in your blog and he also places a link for your site on his blog. Search engines consider this as a deceptive practice and fair chances are that you will get penalized by Google.
2. Too many 404 Pages

I believe everyone in blogging already know what is 404 pages and how to find 404 error pages. Though search engines do not consider having 404 page as a deceptive practice, but too many broken links or 404 pages is not good for your SEO as well.
3. Over optimization Optimization is good to help search engines to find out what is your primary and secondary keywords on a specific page, but too many or over optimization might look like your content spammy. Search engine wants that you write primarily for readers, not for search engines! Read from past: Top SEO tips to Dominate Search Engines like Google
4. Paid Links Many buy paid links from various sources. While the authenticity and PR of such sources is not always verified and genuine, you should avoid this practice not to get penalty from Google.
5. Spam Links If you are having too many spam links this could downgrade your Pagerank. You can use Google Disavow Tool to get rid of this, but using the tool requires adequate knowledge, so use only if you barely need it!
More Deceptive Practices to get penalty from Google 6. Hidden Links In my earlier post about Google Penalty I discussed about hidden links which is a common practice. Such links stay hidden in the source code- specially in free themes and unauthorized plugins if you are using WordPress. For checking free themes, you can use Theme Authenticity Checker and plugins should be installed from trusted sources only.

7. Anchor text Variation If you would like to rank a post high for any specific keyword, consistently linking the post with the same anchor text will look like link spamming. So you should make variation in keywords using LSI keywords too. Say you want to rank a post for “Google Penalty”. In addition to use anchor text “Google Penalty”, you might like to use few other anchor texts too- “Penalty from Google”, “Penalized by Google”, “how to avoid Google penalty” etc etc. Read: Onpage Optimization factors for better SEO ranking
8. Faster link building Every people has limitation in work, search engines can understand this. If you build links too fast, search engines understand that automated process has been used to achieve this. So building links in standard number is always the best. There is no specific guideline what is the maximum acceptable links to be produced each day. But for new sites I suggest to build maximum 20 links/day initially and then up to 50 links/ day (maximum). This is my personal evaluation and the suggestion might vary from person to person.
9. Downtime You should be selective in your hosting. Too many or too frequent downtime might cause negative impact. You can check server uptime with Pingdom tools which constantly monitors uptime, automatically generate reports every month and email you as well.

10. Low quality Content Content is the King! We all know it now. Thus you should focus on quality content rather than quantity. Search engine counts total time spent on site, pageviews per visit; moreover reduce bounce rate will help you from being penalized by Google.
11. Multiple H1 If you are using WordPress then your H1 goes to post Title by default. H1 tags should be used only once. If you need to use other tag, then use H2 and H3 tags.
12. Duplicate Content You should avoid duplicate contents to avoid penalty from Google. Search engines have special algorithm to find out which one is original and which one is duplicate based on indexation date.

13. Keyword Stuffing Keyword optimization is good so far but Stuffing is bad. Keyword stuffing looks like you want to manipulate the search engine results for specific keyword. The best practice is to use the combination of Primary, Secondary and LSI keywords in your post.
14. Hidden Content With the hope of getting contextual ads for high paying keywords, some webmasters place hidden keywords matching with the background color that is not visible to human but to search engines. While this might show high paying ads but chances are that your Adsense account being banned and you loose search rankings at the same time.
15. Hacked Site If your site is being hacked or compromised, then chances are to be penalized by Google. Search engines would not like to send visitors to infected sites and they will take severe action on such site or sites. To get rid of being compromised your entire site, you can use a premium backup tool like Backup Buddy (backup buddy review) or Backup Creator and can take the help of professional Sucuri support to remove malware from your site.
