Santeh’s Innovation through the years
F
rom its humble beginning as shrimp feeds importer from Taiwan, Santeh Feeds Corporation has grown to be the Philippines most reputable icon in the Philippine aquaculture industry. And with its present recognition as 1st place of Asian Best Feed Miller 2012 award held in Bangkok, Thailand attests its strong ambition of much bigger recognition for quality products and innovation not only for people of Juan De La Cruz but to the Asian market as well. Its triple ISO certification for quality, environmental compliance and occupational safety all adheres to strict global standards. It is likewise HALAL certified plant and by next year, Santeh is again readying for another certification i.e. HACCP. Monodon and vannamei feeds. It has one of the best shrimp and vannamei feeds in the market. The product is highly-compacted and highly-stable underwater. It may not be the cheapest but its formula is well-suited to local farming system and technology. Using Tateh monodon and vannamei feeds assures farmers of feed capability to contribute efficiently lower in the overall cost-competitiveness considering the fact that feeds comprises the largest chunk of the production cost. Extruded lines. Santeh has extruded products available in floating and slowsinking variants across all species like milkfish, tilapia and catfish. These extruded product lines are high-digestible for feed use regardless of stocking density and culture system. These extruded lines are eco-friendly and does not cause pollution to the environment when properly used. Marine fish feeds. It is the only feed company in the country that produces high-value fish feeds line for grouper, snapper, pompano, seabass and rabbitfish. These species are known to be of higher farm-gate price in the market and has very strong potential for export
live or chilled. Metro Manila institutional accounts like hotels and restaurants prefer these high-value species rather than tilapia or milkfish which are all intended for mass market. Micropellets. This is one of the latest innovation of Tateh aqua feeds. Santeh adopts basic fish feeding principle of mouth size specific to feed size principle. It has no powder content and has the capacity to make fish population uniform in size if extended use is made. It is available in two variants: floating and slow-sinking for either pond or cage use. Size uniformity is important during harvest because fish undergoes sizing especially for milkfish. Powder products. It has undeniable strong quality powder products through Fry Boosters 1, 2 and 3 all designed for young fish diets both milkfish and tilapia. It may not be the only fry powder or booster product in the market but customers were able to differentiate Tateh Fry boosters among the rest. It is the only powder product that does not disintegrate easily in water during feeding. It spreads in water surface evenly during feeding, thereby assuring higher feed ingestion. Tateh Fry Booster product is highly useful in hatcheries, nurseries and even early
grow-out periods. Crab feeds. Tateh Aqua feeds is the only brand in Asia that has specific feed line for crab. In this case, farmers will no longer rely purely on other inconvenient diets like trash fish or plant-based indigenous materials to grow crab. Crab farmers across the country start recognizing the convenience of using this formulated feeds for crab because of its impact for higher survival, higher percentage of fat crab, and cleaner production environment. Crab is grown in the country majority for export in Hongkong, Singapore,Taiwan and Japan. All these innovations yet maybe simple but its impact in accelerating aquaculture in the country is felt through the words of farmers. With these innovations, farmers can compete to better production prices, premium quality fish, cleaner and better farming environment. With over-all cost competitiveness because of better FCRs,’ farmers can assure profitability even during swing moments of farm-gate prices which is normal in the market. Farmers should always take a look not on the actual price but to the feed performance. In this case, Santeh has fulfilled its humble role as responsible feed miller not only for profit but of genuine service to farmers.

Santeh Wins Asian Feed Miller of the Year Award
Santeh Feeds Corporation, maker of Tateh Aquafeeds was named the Asian Feed Miller of the Year by ADDCON (a German based specialist in Green Chemistry) in cooperation with Asian Feed Magazine. The awarding was made at the Victam Asia 2010 exhibition which was held in Bangkok, Thailand on 3 - 5 March of this year. Ms. Gundelina Chua, AVP for Systems and Quality received the trophy and certificate of award on behalf of the company. The award is given every year to the most innovative feed company in Asia. Judging is made by a jury based on four criteria: Industry leadership, Use of technology, Quality and safety, and Logistics.
Santeh was able to demonstrate industry leadership through its track record. Established in 1990 at the height of the black tiger shrimp industry development Santeh managed to weather the shrimp industry crisis in the mid 1990s and even grow by being one of the earliest feedmills in the Philippines to diversify into tilapia and milkfish feeds in 1993. The company eventually produced extruded floating products in 1997. It has since diversified further to produce feeds for various high value marine fish species including groupers and pompano. Its product line now include micropellets for hatcheries and nurseries. When the culture of Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, was
finally legalized in the Philippines in 2007, Santeh was among the first feed companies to have feeds ready for the species. Its leadership comes not only in terms of innovative products and diversity of species served but also its nationwide reach within the Philippines with its network of dealers. Most other feed companies serve only limited areas and regions in the Philippines. When demand for Santeh feed products rose in Southern Mindanao Santeh opened its second plant in Polomolok , South Cotabato in 2008. There it captured majority of the feed market in the region. This year the company shall inaugurate its third plant in Cagayan de Oro City again in response to the development in Northern Mindanao . With the three plants located strategically, the company is geared towards attaining a stronger market presence in the Philippines. It is looking forward to higher sales volume and greater market dominance. ADDCON, is a German based specialist in Green Chemistry has started its activities in Asia 3 years ago. Apart from feed additives, such as the FORMI product range, the company supplies the industry also with feed preservatives, silage additives and a range of products for the aquaculture industry.

Pangasius: Industry Updates
E
ver since the first techno-demo ponds sponsored by Tateh Premium Feeds Corporation in Mindanao proved the overwhelming profitability of rearing pangasius in ponds, the culture method has spread all over the Philippines, with Region IV-A in Luzon exhibiting the fastest growth in investment. Region 12 (SOCCSKSARGEN), where the techno-demo ponds in mid- 2009 were carried out, continues to post robust growth in production especially in North Cotabato. DTI Region12 ARD Dorecita Delima, the “National Pangasius Champion,” reports that pangasius culture is already a national phenomenon, with massive potential to become one of the most important commercial spe-
cies for aquaculture in the Philippines in the coming years. For 2011 alone, the industry, through DTI, led to the creation of 143 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and assisted in another 500 more. The activity generated 562 jobs nationwide for the same year. ARD Delima recognizes import substitution as a potent driver to bolster the growth of Philippine pangasius industry. In 2010, an estimated 600 metric tons (MT) pangasius fillet with a market value of $ 1.650M was imported by the Philippines every month. DTI projects that by 2016, a total of 270 hectares can be developed with investments reaching P650M and generating revenues around P945M by
substituting imported pangasius (branded as “Cream Dory”) with local produce. The whole activity is expected to create around 2,700 jobs by the said year. It is worth noting that DTI estimates are largely based on the results of the techno-demo ponds in Mindanao established through the collaborative efforts of Tateh Premium Feeds Corporation, DTI-12 through ARD Delima, BFAR-12 through RD Sani Macabalang and South Cotabato PFO Sukarno Anayatin and RD Foods International Philippines,Inc. VP-COO Mr. Roger Rivera. The techno-demo ponds adopted the following parameters: stocking density of 5 pcs./cubic meter, water depth of not less than 1.0 meter (1.52.0 meters ideally), 1.0 kilogram ABW

What Do Farmers Say Tateh Pangasius Feed has been in the market for three years and has been supporting DTI’s thrust in propagating pangasius culture in Mindanao. The following testimonials from customers will give readers ideas on the culture of pangasius using Tateh aquafeeds.
“
Pangasius culture has really renewed my interest in my fish farm. When I was told that water depth and water supply are the important factors to grow pangga, I had my ponds increased to a depth of 2 meters. The initial growing was very good, except for a pond that was overstocked which we had to transfer to another pond. I learned that stocking density is also important. That is why I am now continuously seeking the advise of technical people especially from Tateh who provides the feeds for my pangga and tilapia. My pangga grew very fast and lately, my tilapia are growing quite fast, too. I have 320 pieces pangga breeder in my inventory which I can hopefully utilize for breeding in the future so I can program my growing. I am thankful to DTI and Tateh for helping me bring back my interest in my fish farm, which had been idle for some time.
“
I have been a hito grower for several years already way back from my early days in Davao City. When I was awarded one of the techno-demo ponds for pangasius, I eagerly made the most of it, and found out that growing it is even easier than growing hito. It is very easily adapted to formulated feeds and the growth rate is quite exceptional. I was convinced to use 100% feeds especially when I saw that the fish grew very fast using Tateh Pre-starter Surfer at first, then finished the crop with the entire Tateh Surfer line-up. I am quite confident that pangga growing will hit the jackpot, soon as a hatchery in Mindanao will be established, which will bring down fingerling cost and eventually, also lower production cost.
Mrs. Estelita Pasok (Entrepreneur, Farm-owner and grower, Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat)
Mr. Rey Gorre (Pangasius and Hito fingerling supplier and grow-out operator, General Santos City)
Mrs. Sylvia Jovero (Owner, Jovero Fish Farm,Polomolok, South Cotabato)
“
The growing of pangasius in Midsayap has provided livelihood to Muslims and Christians alike. Our ultimate dream is to grow pangasius in the Liguasan Marsh to alleviate poverty and provide food security to people in PALMA (Pigcawayan, Alamada, Libungan, Midsayap, Aleosan). Tateh Feeds has helped us a lot especially during our early days of culturing pangasius, showing us the definite advantage in using feeds to improve production.
“
“
Wherever there is abundant water supply, growing of pangasius is very easy. As an owner of a spring resort, I diverted portion of my water source to supply my cultured pangasius in a nearby pond. Tateh Manager Jojo Bucog told me that abundant water supply is the most important factor in growing pangga. He told me the fish can grow to a weight of 1 kilo in 6 months. I never believed him then. However, come harvest time, the fish did not only attain 1 kilo, but had an average body weight of 1.4 kilos after only 176 days of culture with a survival rate of 92% from an initial size of 15g. The abundant water supply really did wonders. And of course, Tateh Feeds and their technical support is an integral part of the success.

(Average Body Weight) at 6 months DOC (Days of Culture) from an initial ABW of 20g and provision of abundant water supply. These parameters have become benchmarks for grow-out operations of pangasius in the Philippines. This year, Santeh Feeds Corporation/Tateh Premium Feeds Corporation is again bullish in promoting commercial production of pangasius in the Philippines. It is a major (Gold) sponsor in the up-coming National Pangasius Conference spearheaded by the Pangasius Philippines, Inc. (PPI). Tateh’s Area Sales Manager for Mindanao, Diomede C. Bucog, Jr. is member of the Board of Trustees of PPI.

Mr. Magpayo is very satisfied with the result of Tateh in his farm which gives him an average FCR of 1.1 in his 28 hectares of grow-out ponds. Fingerlings with size of # 20- # 22 from the hatchery are stocked at 40,000 pcs per hectare (4 pcs/m2). Fry booster is given for 20 days prior to feeding Pre-Starter. This technique according to him is very useful in obtaining uniformity in size. Large size variation is avoided by using smaller size feed type and prolonging its feeding duration. His total feed allocations in the entire culture period are as follows: frymash to starter- 10%; grower- 70% and finisher-20%. With this allocation, he obtains good shape
and proper body thickness in his harvest. He was surprised that despite its relatively higher price compared to the previous brands used, he is actually to earning more with Tataeh Aquafeeds. He has now realized that even if the feed price is higher, as long as you use less of it and get a lower Feed Conversion Ratio, you can earn a higher profit. This is completely opposite to the practice of other farmers in Central Luzon who, in order to cut cost, will use lower price feeds without regard to its quality. This results to a higher FCR and lower biomass at harvest, longer days of culture and low stocking population. Mr. Magpayo further realized that it is wrong to merely consider the price of feeds without regard to quality. While the feeds may ost less pr kilo, you also have to use more to produce one kilo of fish and results in lower profitability potential. There is nothing positive in such practice in terms of risk also, because the actual saving in feed cost is not substantial. In his hatchery, he likewise noticed the better quality of his fry when he used both Tataeh broodstock feeds
and fry booster feeds. He found out that feeding fry with Tateh fry booster feeds leads to higher survival of fry when transported. Once stocked they are also more active during initial feeding in grow-out ponds. Using his fry his customers can properly estimate fry survival because the fry keeps feeding on the surface. His fry customers appreciate the quality of his fry based on the feedback he has been getting. Customers keep on coming back to buy his fingerlings. When using Tateh broodstock feeds, he noticed that the fecundity of his breeders have improved in terms of fry output. Since broodstock feeds is especially formulated for tilapia breeders, it contains an optimum level of protein and fat which will make the breeder spawn at optimum capacity without filling the tilapia with fat deposits. Feeds comprises about 50-70% of the total cost of inputs. Translating this percentage means a 50-70% success rate. Each farmer cannot afford to be wrong in making his feed choice because it’s his biggest expense in the production. Tateh Tilapia Feeds products like Surfer and XML floating feeds can help farmers make the right feed choice.

A profitable tilapia pond farming is highly dependent on quality feeds not price —Florante Magpayo
“
Minalin,Pampanga. Tilapia pond farming in Central Luzon is getting tougher this time. Considering escalating cost of all inputs like feeds, fuel, electricity; coupled with fishkills and high mortality due to predatory species and diseases, earning a profit is a big challenge for a farmer like Mr. Dante Magpayo. But the truth behind that big challenge is that, he manages to earn a profit. He attributes this profit to Tateh feeds, due to its high feed performance. He hs been a Tateh Aquafeeds user for two years already.

From Taal Lake to Bolinao Tateh Extruded Feeds Prove Its Worth
I
n addition to being a tourist spot Taal Lake is also a major fish production area and is noted for its maliputo and tawilis. With the introduction of fish cages more than two decades ago the lake became known for its tilapia that is consistently good tasting year round and therefore commands a higher price than those grown elsewhere. Later bangus was also introduced but tilapia is still the dominant aquaculture species with more than 60,000 metric tons produced in 2011. To the north, we have Bolinao in Pangasinan where fish culture in cages is also a big industry. Here bangus is the main species since the cages are set in marine waters. Due to over crowding and over stocking both areas have been plagued by fishkills which resulted in big losses. In both areas, Tateh extruded feeds have demonstrated its cost effectivity. In Taal Lake fish growers using TATEH Premium Extrusink observed a 10% increase in volume harvested within the same growing period compared to that from Premium Pelletized Sinker. Feed Conversion Ratio dropped to as much as 0.3 to 0.5 or 9 pesos to 15 pesos saved for feed in producing a kilo of fish. The Premum Extrusink has the same proximate analysis as the Premium Pelletized Sinker but its efficiency is improved because Extrusink is well milled and the extrusion process subjects the feed to a much higher temperature that cooks it more effectively. With this procedure, the feed becomes highly digestible and more of it is converted into fish meat
rather than excreted as feces. Extrusink is a slow-sinker feed. The feed doesn’t disintegrate in the water easily preventing the leaching of nutrients. The fish population can eat within the entire water column with almost no wastage so the fish are equally fed ensuring uniform size at harvest. This makes Extrusink the top feed line in Taal Lake which performs well even under the area’s high stocking density (100-250pcs/m3) and the lack of natural food. It provides complete nutrition for the fish while making feeding easy for the farmers. It increases harvest while minimizing the leaching of nutrients into the lake. In three words, Extrusink is efficient, economical and eco-friendly. Another feed line which can be used for Taal lake efficiently is the floating feeds like Tateh Surfer. Farmers will not need to wonder whether the feeds will be eaten by the fish or not, because it floats on the surface of the water. Feeding activity is therefore always visible. Farmers need only to install feeding nets to ensure that the feeds will not drift out of the net cage due to wind or current. Their visibility makes feed monitoring easy and makes it possible to apply onky enough for each feeding so that all the feeds that are given will be ingested before nutrients are lost due to leaching, In Bolinao, fish growers are also shifting to extruded feeds after trials show their effectivity for bangus. From an FCR of 2.7 to 3.0 using conventional pellets, farm-
ers are now enjoying an FCR of 2.2 to 2.39 with Tateh Extrusink. Additionally the harvested fish are more uniform in size with a higher percentage attaining jumbo sizei at harvest (400 to 500 g) This means higher profitability. With the low FCR farmers have the option of either harvesting immediately or delaying the harvest based on growth and feed volume estimates as well as the market. If the additional biomass to be gained is estimated to be higher than the additional feed then the farmer may decide to continue feeding and delay the harvest. With low quality conventional pelletized feed delaying the harvest will always mean higher production cost with no equivalent increase in harvest biomass. While the Extrusink line of feed maybe higher in price than low quality pellets, farmers need less of it to produce the same biomass of fish making the cost to produce a kilogram of fish very much lower. Whether in freshwater or in marine waters; be it in Taal Lake or in Bolinao; whether for tilapia or for milkfish, Tateh Extrusink delivers. Santeh Innovative Farming (from P3)
