IMMERSING INTO THE MICROBIOME A SYMBIOSIS BETWEEN THE GROUND AND HUMAN DYNAMICS

The first Human and Non human connection is the one that is developed through our senses. ¿How do we perceive a space? ¿What are the first things we see or feel? These dynamics let us engage with nature.

N

The microbiome present everywhere transcends our perception, these organisms which we cannot see define and transform the environment but also play a big role within our genetics. This human and non human relationship represents the most primitive connection that has and will continue to shape our minds and bodies.

To let nature continue its course, replanting ideas and strategies to reinforce its biological developments. The symbiosis (human - non human & non human - non human) should become stronger and more evident. The awareness of this connection could recreate and reroute a healthier scene where the intervention becomes an ecological process.

The depressions are guided by the existing vegetation, seeking to be close to the trees but not too close to interrupt any rooting. The soil around tree roots is rich of microbiome and nutrients

The species plan was developed. A few studies were mentioning the addition of solid substrates to induce the growth of certain species as well as ‘induced rooting’

through the plantation of other species to enhance the soil enough to get the fungi to grow. Each substrate would be added according to the specie.

Graduation Project The Antioquia museum is located in the centre of medellín, an area that converges different type of people and that unfortunately is the scenario of some illegal activities that are a concerning problem to the city; therefore the museum tries to become an educational and cultural home for everyone, to create a new way of living away from illegality and violence. Nevertheless the centre is a great place filled with movement and activities that bring life to the city and exposes the culture of the society. GRADIENT From informal to formal art

NEW WING AND EXTENSION for one of the most important ART MUSEUMS in medellin: MUSEO DE ANTIOQUIA

1. A plaza underneath

The popular culture is a system of artistic manifestations that come directly from peoples beliefs, values and traditions that form the society. In the centre of Medellín you can see the presence of diverse characters that end up creating a society scenario in the streets where the citizens themselves show all these cultural expressions in their everyday lives. The project works as a GRADIENT from the popular culture to the formal expression of art, where the society and their dynamics are exposed as an art piece, as it shows the creative process of art that starts with social interaction.

The way the circulation is structured allows the viewers to see different activities and dynamics from different points of the museum. CIRCULATION AS SCENARIO

The circulation (ramp) becomes a scenario/ open theater for artistic presentations, expressions of art and popular culture.

URBAN The urban plan projects the public space as a system, connecting existing parks, plazas, cultural buildings and landmarks; some of these need to be enhanced as others need to be transformed.

Medellín has been working for the renovation of the centre in order to improve the life quality of the citizens; therefore a linear park is being proposed to become a great public space for pedestrian transit that will go through the city centre in the avenue called ‘de greiff ’. For the extension of the art museum a master plan is being designed adjusting to the previous ideas but complementing them with new proposals.

CONNECTION The NEW part of the museum creates a direct connection through public space, a big plaza embraced by the building itself, the building becomes a roof that contains part of the plaza; This big plaza completes the boulevard adjacent to the river Santa elena. The new part of the museum seeks to become part of a system that includes the old museum, the cultural building “la casa del encuentro” and the new wing.

9

All connected through the proposed public space that intents to invite and lead everyone to the museum. The museum will also include the population of the neighbourhood; some of the blocks surrounding the museum are wood, metal and textile workshops that could be included in the museums activities and exhibitions. Displaying these art works will connect the habitant of the area with the museum.

It was analysed that “la playa” is characterized by two types; The commercial “la playa” and the cultural “la playa”; these two typologies respond to a hierarchy imposed by the people. The stretch of la playa between “la oriental” avenue and “el palo” street represents the commercial sector full of retail stores and street sellmen.

The other stretch from “el palo” street til the theater Pablo Tobón Uribe museum represents the cultural area full of museums, educational insitutes and academies. Based on the analysis for the urban plan it is proposed to take into consideration these 2 main typologies (commercial and cultural stretches) and continue to enhance them. New transversal axis will be bridges to hybridize them both. The commercial stretch would get cultural boulevards and the cultural stretch would get commercial boulevards, these are transversal connections.

The project is an open museum based in two concepts related to movement and circulation; 1. "El paseo" (walk) are the elevated platforms of the museum which follow a structured circulation that embraces the native forest.

2. "La deriva" (drift), the native forest at ground floor represents an unstructured and spontaneous circulation that invites you to choose your own way inside the landscape.

The project other that being an open museum is a tribute to agriculture of the area, it allows the society to interact inside the native forest and landscape.

PAISAJE AEREO: Finally the project is developed by 2 main strategies of action: from the natural system, to restore the ravine la malpaso and from the socio-cultural system to expand the encounter and comercial cores.

1. Socio-cultural system

MEMORIAL A project in company with my co-workers Manuela Arboleda and Mariana Toro

The main idea was to achieve a place determined by the actions of the community, as they work together, the space will start to appear and evolve to become a place of joy and entertainment.

The project is formed by different paths, in between these paths there are ceramic elements filled with ground and seeds.

These pots can be used as chairs, tables, as a constructive game. The idea is that by the dropping and breaking of these, an spontaneous growth of vegetation might appear.

MEMORIAL LA ESCOMBRERA:

RESIDENTIAL BLOCK 23

Close upper building view. Residential apartment blocks: -Semibasement -2 retail shops -12 apartments -5 floors

BRIEF

PROCESS

From the onset one of the main parameters of the project was to create a greener space into the urban areas to improve the residential developments.

1. Meetings with client to entablish project brief

Following the streetscape analysis the design took shape; being a street with new dwellings the design followed a more modern style which still includes some traditional details as the common imbroll stone work used in the maltese architecture. The brief was to create a residential block of apartments maintaining comfortable and functional layouts.

2. the brickwork of layouts, spatial layouts of apartments, shops and basement. 3. Construction of 3D Model and presentation of visuals including all materials and colour pallettes. 4. Preparing all required drawings for submission to the planning authority.

*Process was repeated a number of times until client’s brief was achieved.

The aim was to create a building that would read as one taking into consideration that most of the ground floor is third party. The wide garage openings on the ground floor continue to replicate in the upper levels. Following the streetscape, the value of the front garden was taken as concept in order to project gardens all along the facade; a game of projections were combined to satisfy the layouts with open external spaces , the balconies.

BRIEF

PROCESS

From the onset the purpose was to design the interior of the existing library/meeting room from the first floor of the duplex offices of ME Architects as a sample room was also needed, therefore the main parameter was to maximize as possible the area of storage within the area of the room itself but also the new units to complement the existing one in order to create a homogeneous space.

1. Meetings with client to entablish project brief
