SAMPLE CONVERSATION Student: Hello, Kate/Ken! Interlocutor: Hello! Student: Everyone is leaving for the holidays. Where are you going to spend them? Interlocutor: I’m going to my grandparents’. They live in the country and I’m always glad to escape the city for a week. Do you prefer living in the countryside or in a big city? Student: I definitely prefer the city. // I definitely prefer the countryside. Interlocutor: Do you? Why? Student: I believe that people have more opportunities in the city. There are lots of theatres, cinemas, concert halls and different clubs. If you’re fond of sports, there are usually all kinds of sports facilities in the city. There are lots of educational opportunities too as most colleges and universities are in big cities. Then there’s also shopping – I enjoy going to large shopping centres. // I think life is healthier in the countryside. There are no traffic jams or air pollution and there are no crowds of people. If you live in the country, you can enjoy nature and spend more time outdoors. There are more opportunities for sports like cycling, cross-country skiing and jogging. People have more time for their friends and families, and for their hobbies too. They can do gardening or go fishing. Interlocutor: I see. I read in some science fiction book that in the future there’ll be neither cities nor countryside – all the people will be living in wellplanned, green towns. I love science fiction. What kind of books do you prefer? Student: I like historical novels. Interlocutor: Why? Student: It’s always interesting to get to know how people lived in the past. I’m fond of history and I like reading about the great people and events of the past. There are lots of mysteries in our past and it’s very exciting to read about them. Interlocutor: Yeah, you’re right. Look, I feel really hungry. How about having some pizza in the pizzeria down the street? It’s not far from here… Student: Thank you, Kate/Ken, but I can’t. My class starts in a few minutes and I really have to go. Interlocutor: Oh, I see. Student: Enjoy your pizza and see you soon! Interlocutor: See you.
