VERTICAL NEIGHBORHOOD
THE PROGRAM OF THIS MIXED USED HIGH-RISE, LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE KENNEDY EXPRESSWAY, CONSISTS OF RETAIL, PARKING, A HUMAN SPIRIT MUSEUM ON THE BOTTOM FLOORS, ALONG WITH 500 RESIDENTIAL UNITS ON THE UPPER FLOORS. EACH OF THE UNITS ARE POSITIONED IN A MODULAR FORMFOR THE TWO AND THREE BEDROOM UNITS, THEY ARE IN THE SHAPE OF A “L”, AND ARE EACH INTERLOCKED TOGETHER TO FORM A GRID SYSTEM, AND FOR THE ONE BEDROOM AND STUDIO UNITS, THEY ARE LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGH-RISE, IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE ELEVATOR CORE. THIS ARRANGEMENT ALLOWS FOR FULL COMMUNITY INTERACTIONS BETWEEN EVERY UNITS,AND WITH THE INCORPORATION OF SOCIAL SPACES SUCH AS TWO COMMUNITY GARDENS, FITNESS CENTERS, AND LAUNDRY ROOMS IN THE TOWER, CREATES NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE NO RESIDENTS WILL BE ISOLATED FROM THE OTHERS AT ANY TIME.

MONASTERY
INFLUENCED BY THE DISCIPLINED ROUTINE THAT EACH MONKS ARE REQUIRED TO UNDERTAKE, THE PROPOSAL OF THIS MONASTERY CALLS FOR AN EVEN DIVISION SPLIT IN THE MIDDLE. EVERY ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS -WALLS, COLUMNS, AND WINDOWS-ARE ALIGNED ACCORDING TO A GRID. THIS REFLECTS THE RIGIDITY OF THE MONK’S LIFESTYLE , AND IT ENABLES THEM TO ACHIEVE FULL ENLIGHTENMENT.

WINTERGARDEN
CHICAGO IS A CITY OF VERTICALS, SO THIS NEW WINTERGARDEN PROPOSES A SERIES OF TOWERS INTERCHANGING AND INTERLOCKING AROUND A NUMBER OF LANDSCAPED PLAZAS. INFLUENCED FROM THE GREAT MOUNTAINS OF CENTRAL CHINA, THE PASSAGE THROUGH THE GARDEN BECOMES A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE WHEN ONE JOURNEYS ACROSS THE BUILDING-SOME TIMES THE USERS WOULD FIND THEMSELVES IN AN OPEN WORLD, AND SOMETIMES THEY WOULD FIND THEMSELVES INSIDE CONFINED SPACES. ALL OF THESE EXPERIENCES EVOKE DIFFERENT SPIRITS IN THE USERS, A JOURNEY THAT THEY ALL TAKE IN ORDER TO PROCEED.

ALONG THE SOUTHERN BRANCH OF THE CHICAGO “L” ELEVATED TRAIN TRACKS LIE A LARGE NUMBER OF VACANT LOTS, MOSTLY DUE TO ONGOING DETERIORATION OF THE BRONZEVILLE NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS NEW MASTER PLAN PROPOSES NEW AREAS OF GREENERIES SUCH AS TREE NURSERIES AND POCKET PARKS TO FILL UP THESE LOTS. BY DOING THIS, BRONZEVILLE WOULD POTENTIALLY BE REVITALIZED, DRAWING IN NOT ONLY WILDLIFE BUT ALSO MORE HUMAN POPULATION.

CONVERT VACANT LOTS OWNED BY IIT TO TREE NURSERIES.
THE NURSERIES WILL PROVIDE TREES FOR AGING CAMPUS TREES. ADDITIONAL TREES FROM OFF-CAMPUS IIT TREE NURSERIES WILL PROVIDE INITIAL PLANTINGS FOR RESEARCH LOTS.
phase 3 TREES GROW IN THE RESEARCH NURSERIES ARE PLANTED INTO THE ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH GARDEN, MIMICKING NATIVE HABITATS.
phase 4 BIRD FRIENDLY TREE SPECIES GROWN FROM THE URBAN FOREST WILL PROVIDE PLANTINGS FOR DESIGNATED BIRD SANCTUARY AREAS. THESE SPACES ARE PLANTED MUCH MORE DENSELY WITH A FOCUS ON MULTIPLE CANOPY LAYERS.

FLOAT
SITUATED NEXT TO THE NORTH BRANCH OF THE CHICAGO RIVER, THE NEW BOATHOUSE SERVES AS AN EXTENSION OF THE LINCOLN PARK ROWING CLUB. THE PROPOSAL CALLS FOR AN ELEVATED MASS, WHICH EFFECTIVELY CREATES THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF ACCESS-FROM PRIVATE TO PUBLIC. NOT ONLY DOES THE MASS FORM A DISTINCT VISUAL DEVICE AGAINST THE MONOTONY OF CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOODS, BUT IT ALSO TRANSFORMS THE RIVER INTO A SECONDARY FRONT FOR BOATING ACTIVITIES.

OPEN-
MAKE AN ANCHOR TO THE END
THE SCHEME OF THIS PROJECT IS TO OPEN THE CAMPUS TO THE PUBLIC, BY CREATING TWO STRUCTURES AT BOTH ENDS OF THE CAMP THOROUGHFARE; A WELCOME GATEWAY HOSTED AT THE ENTRANCE, AND A MAIN PERFORMANCE THEATER AT THE END. BETWEEN THEM THERE WOULD BE NEW PATHWAYS THAT CIRCULATE THROUGHOUT THE CAMPUS, WHICH WILL OPEN UP CERTAIN AREAS THAT WERE OTHERWISE INACCESSIBLE BEFORE.
