Tauranga Girls’ College Newsletter Principal with Head Students

Message from the Principal Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa/ warm greetings to you all. As the College’s new Principal, it is my very real pleasure to welcome you to a new year and to our first newsletter for 2018. This newsletter can also be found on our website which I encourage you to visit at www.tgc.school.nz. It is indeed a privilege to be your Principal and to be back in the Bay of Plenty after a 30 year absence. I am an enthusiastic and committed leader of learning who is passionate about working with young people in our community. To have the opportunity to make a difference at Tauranga Girls’ College is an exciting challenge that I look forward to. I believe leadership cannot sit with one person. My leadership journey has reflected the breadth of experiences that I have gained from others - ehara taku toa I te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini - My strength is not mine alone, it comes from many. Already, I have seen many pivotal staff demonstrating this very real leadership.

The College offers a comprehensive curriculum and our NCEA results are again impressive. We have punched above our decile rating and comparative national data. Congratulations to all those students who contributed to that outstanding result. I am surrounded by a very capable and passionate team of staff “empowering tomorrow’s women” and our results reflect this. I look forward to celebrating student’s NCEA learning at an assembly this term.

I encourage your daughter to be involved, to make a difference not only in her world, but also to that of others. I look forward to seeing this in action as the year progresses.

Constructing positive relationships is key to all that we do and is underpinned by our schools values of manaakitanga/respect, mahi tahi/participation and mana motuhake/pride. We all have the opportunity to model these both in and out of the College. Two school wide events in Swimming Sports and Athletics are two such examples. Additional examples include Student Council, Tutor Groups, Gateway and Trades Academy.

I look forward to meeting you and your daughter during the course of the year. Together, we can achieve anything!

I am certainly looking forward to my contribution to “empowering tomorrow's women” as equally as I am of yours. Finally, I take this opportunity to thank former Principal Mrs Cowens on her 19 year dedication to our College and wish her well on her retirement.

Tara Kanji Principal

Tauranga Girls' College Sport We will be hitting the ground running as far as summer sports go at Tauranga Girls' College. Please ensure your daughter listens to the Daily Notices and remembers to attend meetings. Many summer sports run over both Term 1 & 4 so if your daughter commits to a sport in Term 1 she needs to understand that this commitment flows on into Term 4. It is important that she realises that there is likely to be tournaments and these are often at the same time as other team sports so awareness of clashes before committing to teams is important. However we encourage your daughter to give as many sports a go! Summer Sports on offer:

    

Canoe Slalom Cricket Futsal Rugby 7s Tennis

    

Touch Triathlon Volleyball Waka Ama

  

Golf - Tournaments all year Cheerleading - all year commitment Sport Climbing - all year commitment

Students will be given a notice on the sports they have indicated they want to join which will have all relevant information. Students must fill in a consent form either online or paper copy and pay the fee to be able to be placed in a team. Winter sports will be starting open trainings and trails late February/early March.

Any questions about how sport is run at Tauranga Girls' College please contact the Sports Department on 5788114 ext 748 or email the Director of Sport – Kaye Barnett kbarnett@tgc.school.nz

Antipodeans Abroad

During December a group of eight students, one teacher and a leader from Antipodeans Abroad toured Vietnam and Cambodia for three weeks. This trip was amazing, we saw so many beautiful sights such as the sunrise over Angkor Wat and learned more about the history of both countries including S21

and the killing fields. A key highlight of this trip was the community project in Istanbori, Cambodia. This project involved building a toilet and well for a local family who really needed it. I think this was a highlight for all of us as the people in the village were so lovely and it was a fantastic way to give back and to help someone in need. We were also able to play and teach the local children which was really fun. Another highlight was the trek in Dalat, Vietnam. The fresh air and scenic views were an awesome way to end the trip. This trek proved challenging but we were all super proud when we

completed it. This trip also allowed each and every one of us to grow, challenging our fixed mind sets, and changing our outlook and attitudes. This experience has taught us such valuable lessons. Akira McTavish-Huriwai Year 12

Spirit of Adventure Spirit of Adventure offers 10 day voyages for students between the age of 16-18 years old. The cost is $2,500. Scholarships and fund raising ideas are available. We are holding meetings for girls who are interested at school. If you think this would be a once in a life time opportunity for your daughter please contact Judith Somerville at jsomerville@tgc.school.nz for more information.

Spirit of New Zealand is a once in a lifetime opportunity which can be said as the best 10 days of your life. You learn a lot about yourself and others whilst doing activities you may have never thought you’d ever have the chance of doing. You meet people from all over New Zealand and make great life long friends who encourage you and help you to improve yourself in every better way.

Whilst on the Spirit of New Zealand I became a more confident person and learnt a lot about leadership. The school values of Tauranga Girls’ College certainly came into the voyage with pride, participation and respect. There is plenty of opportunity to participate in team activities whilst on board, thus giving a sense of pride within yourself. You learn to respect others as well as yourself which boosts confidence which helps with other opportunities such as trainee day. Trainee Day is usually the last day of the voyage where you run the ship with the other trainees. This day was one of my favourite as you really got to put your knowledge from the past 9

days to the test. There is plenty of opportunity to be involved on trainee day whether it be in the kitchen, on deck or at the helm (wheel) which is certainly a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else. Working as a team has really helped me more in group situations as you learn to listen to others and incorporate ideas to better the outcome. A final quote I remember the voyage by is, “We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.” Aimee Palmer Year 13

Uniform At Tauranga Girls' College we place high value on students wearing their uniform with pride as one way of acknowledging that they belong to our school community. Correct uniform must be worn at school as well as coming to and from school. If uniform is worn to town after school, uniform rules still apply. Your support in ensuring your daughters are correctly and appropriately dressed is very much appreciated. The school has implemented a withdrawal system at interval and lunchtime for students incorrectly dressed. This removes those students wearing incorrect uniform from the rest of the school community. Please be aware that your daughter may be sent home to correct her uniform before she can continue to attend school. Senior Summer

Year 13 Tutors and teachers will work with students to monitor defects in uniform and to encourage them to have pride in their appearance and presentation.

Special Assessment Conditions for the NCEA exams 2018 You can apply for Special Assessment Conditions for the NCEA exams if; your daughter has a sensory, physical, medical and or learning difficulty that affects the assessment of their classroom learning, and might be able to be overcome or reduced with appropriate assistance. What are Special Assessment Conditions? Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) provide extra help for approved students when they are being assessed for their NCEA so that barriers to achievement can be removed and they can have a fair opportunity to achieve credits. The support is used for internal standards and external standards (exams). Examples of SAC are use of a writer or a computer, extra time, braille or enlarged papers, or a reader. How is an application made for Special Assessment Conditions? You daughter will need to complete a student application for entitlement to SAC form. These are available from the Deputy Principal in charge of NCEA, Ms Rowlands, Mrs Mordue in the Learning Hub or from the NZQA website. The application will need to be supported by a report written by a registered professional, certifying the medical condition and or learning disability and making recommendations for the assessment of learning (SAC). The report must have been completed within the last three years. What happens then? The school applies online through a very secure portal providing data and other information showing the need for the SAC requested. Applications close in mid-February 2018. NZQA assessors may approve or amend or decline all or any of the SACs requested for your child on the basis of the information provided. Approval means that they are entitled to use the SCA for internal and external assessment (exams) for that year. Who to contact at school: If you think your daughter may be eligible for SACs contact one of the following people; The year level Dean Mrs Mordue, SENCO Glenda Rowlands, Deputy Principal in charge of NZQA
