Tauranga Girls’ College Newsletter Message from the Principal Is it really a protest? You may have read in one of our local newspapers recently that there was a student protest about uniform. As the Principal who has already sought approval for uniform options to be explored, I am unsure if it’s a true ‘protest’. What I can say however, is that I agree that it's time to look at our school uniform. Thanks to a group of students led by Lily, the student rep on the BoT, and supported by some staff, the team is going to explore uniform possibilities and then come back to the community for their thoughts. Yes, this will take time but that’s what genuine consultation is and we need to make sure that our suppliers can deliver on anything that is decided. I am taking this opportunity to consider summer uniform options too, so watch this space for more information. Be a change agent The BoT continues its TGC 2030 Community Consultation process. If you have taken the time to attend, thank you. The oppor-
tunity to attend and to have your say on the future direction of educating young women attending TGC is important to us. If you would still like to have your say, see the flyer included in this newsletter. A survey is also on its way.
International week The College is also celebrating international week. The Food stall was a popular hit amongst staff and students. This was just one of many celebrations of the rich cultural diversity in our school.
The future of NCEA is also up for discussion. This is one part of the bigger, Tomorrow's Schools review. The Ministry of Education is keen to hear from you, so please have your say about the future of education in NZ by visiting their website. This is your opportunity to have a say. Education is a necessary social good and I would encourage you to give this some thought time.
Student Leaders TGC head students hosted the student leaders of the respective Colleges of the Western Bay this week. Collaborations of this kind are a important opportunity for our amazing talent to share ideas and to develop new ones. There was of course the opportunity to eat pizza, lollies and cupcakes. After all, leaders have to have fun too. What a pleasure it was for TGC to take the lead and to host this event for 2018. My thanks to our student leaders of Leah, Emily, Angel and Katie.
Matariki The College is also celebrating Matariki with a range of activities during each day. The Kaupapa leaders have put together a great calendar of events and details have been in the notices and presented to the staff. This is yet another example of student led celebrations in our College.

Chemistry Student’s Success 8 Year 13 Chemistry students travelled to the University of Waikato on June 12 to compete in the annual Waikato University Analytical Chemistry competition. They had to experimentally come up with the value of x in NiSO4.xH2O, a task that took 2 teams of 4 a total of 6 hours. One team came up with 6.140 (the actual answer being 6.00), the other team omitted a crucial step near the end and so they unfortunately were out. Our top team placed 5 th out of 24 teams ($100 prize), meaning they were the top Tauranga school present and we maintained our record of attaining a place every year for the last 5 years. Waikato Diocesan won, followed by Pukekohe and Trident High schools. We will be training hard to try and win the trophy in 2019!
OffKuts wins again Skye Lunson-Storey and Abbey Crawford have formed a business OffKuts to be entered as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme. The business idea is to use off cuts from the fashion industry to create gender neutral t-shirts. Skye and Abbey attended a 48 hour Business competition Mash Up, held in Tauranga, over the weekend of 09-10 June. The competition consisted of piloting a business concept, creating a pitch and then presenting it to a panel of judges made up of business entrepreneurs and members of the business community. Skye and Abbey, pitched their OffKuts idea and were placed runner up overall, coming first in the best revenue model category. They won $200 which will go towards expanding their business idea.

Kahui Ako Survey Thank you so much to the student and whanau community, for the survey responses received, as part of the Kahui Ako survey completed at the beginning of this term. As a staff we have looked at and analysed the data, and are making some plans for our next steps. We really appreciate you taking the time to answer the surveys and help us to collect this data.
Year 11 Market Day During lunchtime on Wednesday 30 May, the Year 11 Business Studies class held a market day at school.
The student groups formed businesses as part of their internal assessment, decided upon a product to sell, produced their product and a business plan, and finally brought their product to the market. Products ranged from home made soap, facial scrubs, candles, pillows, carry bags, jewellery and movie mugs. The students were extremely successful, with many groups achieving good sales and profit. Some groups will continue to sell the remaining stock of their products.
Tauranga Girls’ College are embarking on a major fundraising activity - a “Quiz Night”, on Saturday 28 July , to support sporting, cultural, academic and pastoral trips for our students. The venue will be the Tauranga Girls’ College Sports Hall, doors will open at 6:00pm, and the Quiz will begin at 6:30pm. The theme will be “Heroes and Villains”. Each Quiz Night table (maximum 8 people $200) includes a complimentary drink on arrival and nibbles throughout evening. A cash bar will also be available. Māori Wahine Leadership Day’
On Wednesday 30 May a ‘Māori Wahine Leadership Day’ was held as part of the Ngā Wahine o Mereaira pilot mentoring and leadership project, created in collaboration with Kiwi Leaders, Instep and Tauranga Girls’ College. The purpose of the day was to grow confidence, challenge thinking and expand the student’s networks. As a result of feedback from previous events, we had made the decision to incorporate learning objectives into physical activities. The day included participation in a high ropes confidence course, followed by presentations from successful wahine Māori who shared their career journeys with the students. During the course, the girls were given prompters by the group leaders with questions or statements around leadership. Some of the questions and responses are provided below; Does New Zealand need more Māori leaders or just leaders? “I think it’s good to have more Māori in leadership roles be-
cause it helps to lift our reputation, to see positive role models in the community” If you were Prime Minister, would you prioritise funding for health or education? “Education, because surely if people were more educated, they would make better decisions for their health” What is a leader? “Someone who can build confidence, communicate well with others, supporting others” The course included 6 levels that gradually progressed in height and difficulty. The guides informed us that only 1 in 20 people were able to complete level 6. Out of the 12 students that participated, two girls completed the course ie 1 in 6 which we thought was highly impressive. Our speakers were inspiring and shared perspectives and journeys from diverse backgrounds. During the day, we were able to interview some of the students on leadership, highlights of the day etc. Some of their responses are below. Akuira - Y12
“I really like the emphasis on networking, because it’s kind of like the building blocks of life, you have to talk to people and that’s how you get to where you wanna be, with other people, you don’t really hear people say that they got to where they are by themselves, so building this network is cool.” Pianika - Y13 “Such a cool day, we never get the opportunity to network and it was heaps of fun.” Nelly - Y12 “It was cool to get to know some of the girls from other years and we could support the younger ones through the course. It was cool.” This event would not have been possible without funding from the Ministry of Youth Development and the collaboration of people representing Kiwi Leaders, Tauranga Girls’ College, East Coast Paddlers, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Moana FM.

Big Sing Two of the school choirs joined other Waikato/Bay of Plenty choirs in the annual Big Sing competition last Friday at Holy Trinity Church in Tauranga. Around 300 choirs enter the nationwide competition in a bid to win one of the eighteen coveted spots at the National Big Sing Finale. The top placing choirs at local level are awarded commendations, and recordings of these choir/s are then viewed by a selection panel of judges. Tauranga Girls' College's contemporary choir, the LBD's (Little Black Dresses) won a high commendation whilst Luminosa Armonia Chorale received a Very Highly Commended Award and the award for Best Impact. Our congratulations go to all of the students involved in this prestigious event and we wish you well in the final selection process.

Blue Light Safer Young Driver Each year students in Year 11 are invited to attend the Blue Light Safer Young Driver event. This took place on Wednesday This event promotes safe driving and covers a range of areas. The students have the opportunity to learn more about driver licensing conditions and the graduated licensing scheme, what happens in a road crash, and hear real life stories. As well as listening to guest speakers, students are invited to view displays from Safe City with Tauranga City Council, the Police Traffic and Alcohol Harm Reduction Team (Booze Bus), Fire and Emergency Service, Red Cross NZ, and meet a survivor of a drink driving accident.
War on Words On Friday 29 June, (Period 2 only) Poetry Action will be performing War of Words for our Year 12 and 13 students. War of Words - featuring an updated script from playwright Matt Edgerton - marks 100 years since celebrated World War 1 poet Wilfred Owen died at the age of 25. Much like Owen’s work itself, the performance reverberates with passion, anger, humour and heartbreak as it follows the life of Owen and the influences that led him to become one of the most striking and brilliant voices of his era. The performance also examines people’s attitudes to war and how, through Owen’s poetry, we can come to a better understanding of war today. Poems include: Spring Offensive, Dulce et Decorum Est, Parable of the Old Man and the Young, Mental Cases, Disabled, Anthem for Doomed Youth, Futility. There is a cost involved ($10 per student) in hosting and paying for performance. Students can see Mrs Mejia for more details.

Bluelight Youth Driver Navigator Programme
Congratulations to Jodae Ngaheu who is the first student from TGC to obtain her full drivers licence through the Bluelight Programme. We understand she is also the first Tauranga area graduate for the programme. We extend our thanks to the team at Bluelight for the valuable mahi they continue to offer our students.
Bus Safety At Tauranga Girls’ College We are constantly striving to improve the safety for girls using our school bus system. To this end we have consulted with Uzabus and from Monday June 18 we will be operating a trial of how girls catch their buses at our bus stop. All buses that arrive after 3.30pm will come to the same side of the stop. Girls have been briefed on the changes in assembly and we will ask for their feedback early in Term 3.

Aquatics Class - diving at Motiti Island On Friday 8th June our Aquatics students went to Motiti island to complete their boat dives. The conditions were perfect, not only calm seas, but a bright sunny day with excellent visibility. Most of our girls are now fully qualified divers. They gained their PADI Dive certificates, which allow them to dive to a depth of 18m. This qualification is recognised around the world. Happily no one got seasick! It was a fabulous and successful day.
Project Hip Hop Competition Congratulations to our Hip Hop team ‘Zena’ who competed in the Project Hip Hop competition over Queen’s Birthday weekend here in Tauranga. The team placed 6th in the school division which was a fabulous achievement given they were competing against some strong studio dance crews of very high calibre. Ashlee Morgan (10FEC) and Emily Wiese (10BLL) did a marvellous job choreographing and leading this troupe. We couldn’t be prouder of the effort the girls have put in to the preparation for this event and their exemplary attitude and behaviour at the competition supporting and encouraging themselves and others. Thank you also goes to our wonderful helpers Tracy Treddick, Caressa Dadswell, and Kat de Bruin for making the girls look amazing, Erena Patterson for photographing our girls in action, and to all our family/whanau and friends for their support.

TAURANGA GIRLS’ COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT MULTICULTURAL WEEK The annual multi-cultural week at Tauranga Girls’ College provides the opportunity for international students to share with their peers the specific aspects that make their country special. Monday, 11 June saw the international students provide traditional, home cooked food to share and sell. College students were able to taste food from Japan, Korea, Thailand, China and Europe. The money raised is donated to a charity and this year it will be given to the Breast Cancer Society, as it was a cause that resonated with the girls. Other cultural events throughout the week include traditional and modern dancing, musical items and a film festival movie.
Waikato Cross Country Championship Congratulations to the eleven students who took part in this competition, especially Tiarna Allen who came 2nd in the Year 9 race and Maia Flint who won the Junior Girls’ event. An outstanding run from both of them. National Cross Country is being held this weekend, so this great preparation for all the girls involved.
