“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” – Jawaharlal Nehru Chances are by the time you read this you would already have made your getaway plans for the festive season. Rather than using our last edition of 2014 to offer you inspirational year-end holiday ideas, we decided to conclude with a round-up of some of the best in beach, bush and countryside offerings we have enjoyed ourselves over the past months. When daydreaming of powdery white sands and warm and inviting waters, Mozambique and Zanzibar are no doubt two of the exotic destinations that spring to mind. One of our favourite Mozambican escapes is White Pearl Resorts in Ponta Mamoli on the island’s Lagoon Coast. A quick read through our feature on the exquisite offering will no doubt reveal why it has come to be known as an oasis for silence seekers, creative corporates, romantics and fun-loving families alike. While Zanzibar, another Indian Ocean favourite, offers a host of five-star lodges and resorts, the featured Diamonds La Gemma dell’Est and GOLD Zanzibar are two of our all-time favourites thanks to their unique, comprehensive and world-class locations, infrastructures and offerings. For those who prefer bushwhacking to beach-bumming, our favourite safari experiences of the year included a stay at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe and a Better

Wildlife Photography Course with Pangolin Photo Safaris in Botswana’s magnificent Chobe region. While the former saw us reclining in luxury just a stone’s throw from “The Smoke That Thunders”, the latter found us up close and personal with some of Chobe’s abundant wildlife, carefully capturing them under the sound tutelage of our photographic guides. If it’s the winelands that really tickles your fancy, you may enjoy a visit to one of our top Cape countryside destinations. An old favourite of ours, The Franschhoek Country House and Villas provides veritably palatial accommodation in the heart of South Africa’s food and wine capital. A more recently discovered gem, Diamant Estate in Paarl offers a picturesque wedding venue and sophisticated accommodation options boasting unrivalled views of the valley and, of course, top-notch surrounding wine and dine options. We hope you enjoy our tried-andtested bucket list. Cheers to another memorable year!

Situated on the border of Botswana within the North West province, Madikwe Game Reserve offers visitors a true safari experience with 75,000 ha to explore without the need to worry about popping any malaria tablets. While there are a number of lodges in the reserve, two in particular stand out: one for its superb location and sheer luxury, and the other for catering perfectly to the needs of both big and little visitors.

P

erched on top of a rocky koppie in the heart of the Madikwe Game Reserve, Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge offers unparalleled views over the surrounding savannah, which is simply bursting with local wildlife. Over 66 mammal species, including giraffe and cheetah, call this reserve home, as do hundreds of bird species and everyone’s favourite stars of the safari show, the Big Five. Thanks to a strategically located waterhole just in front of the lodge’s main deck, a parade of animals can always be seen ambling to the water’s edge. The bright red colour of the soil and the aquamarine blue waters of the lodge’s pool throw up the animals in sharp contrast and make almost movie-like the movement of elephant, antelope and giraffe across the frame of the view. It is bush TV, complete with fine dining and a refreshing drink or two. The game viewing opportunities continue as you stroll along the elevated pathways that crisscross this rocky outcrop, connecting the communal areas to the fully equipped gym, the ultimate indulgence of a

bush spa and, of course, the pure luxury of one of the lodge’s ten spectacular rooms. Hurricane lamps light your way at night, while little rock dassies scamper about and lizards sun themselves on the adjacent rocks during the day. While the essential luxury accoutrements are the same for all of the rooms – think cosy fireplaces, tea and coffee stations (complete with delicious homemade rusks), liberating outside showers, invigorating plunge pools, and the kind of bed you sink into with abject joy at the end of the day – they do differ in location. The rooms perched on the top of the koppie offer expansive views of the surrounding plain, perfectly framed by floor-to-ceiling glass doors, complete with a feeling of elevation and space. The rooms at the base of the koppie, however, are nestled snugly in the midst of the surrounding bush with a definite feeling of privacy and seclusion. There is also the added benefit of spotting the odd animal or two – especially graceful ellies – at close range as they meander past on their way to the waterhole.

Guests have an additional option of booking out Little Madikwe Hills Private Camp, a private two-bedroomed villa plus two optional additional suites which can accommodate eight to nine guests. This functions as its own private camp, for the ultimate of exclusive experiences, within an already exclusive location. When not enjoying the supreme comfort of their air-conditioned rooms, chilling in the library or checking out the impressive selection of the wine cellar, guests get to experience the bush at its best, thanks to the lodge’s extremely professional and knowledgeable game rangers, who are assisted in their animalspotting endeavours by eagle-eyed trackers who will amaze you with their skills of perception. While nothing in the bush is ever guaranteed, the park seems to have more than its fair share of lion sightings (often around a freshly made kill), as well as ellie and giraffe encounters. Plus, there is always the possibility of spotting an elusive wild dog. Punctuate these encounters with delicious sundowners and snacks as the sun sets over another beautiful day in Africa, and you have the perfect safari experience. **For more information, email reservations@madikwehills.com or visit www.madikwehills.com.**

ou enter Jaci’s Safari Lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve in North West Province via an old-fashioned wooden swing bridge. It hangs over the brush and swings tentatively with every step – an exhilarating start to your African bush adventure. The bridge leads to the main lodge, where oldfashioned style ends abruptly. The lodge is beautiful. It is divided into separate areas and the furniture and upholstery are bold and proudly African, with bright, colourful printed fabrics covering the sofas and armchairs in the lounge area and blocks of colour used for the dining room chairs in the restaurant area. The main lodge is made up of an upstairs bar, curio shop, and open-plan kitchen and dining area, which extends out onto the wrap-around deck and cosy lounge area. A large fireplace takes centre stage and the comfortable pillows that surround it ensure that it’s a popular chill out spot between meals. Jaci’s Safari Lodge prides itself on putting guests first and the staff try to accommodate your every whim. From providing special noodles for the kids’ dinners on request, to supplying babysitters free every evening, it’s the special care and attention to details that make the lodge and its staff stand out. We love the accommodation at Jaci’s. Only eight suites (or should we say luxury tents?) are available, so the experience is an intimate one. But don’t expect the average camping tent. These large canvas villas are more of the Out of Africa variety and sit on concrete slabs with under-floor heating. The bathtub is also made from concrete and can fit the whole family, while the outside showers allow you to engage with nature at will. The front flaps of the tent remain open throughout the day so that you’re looking out onto nature at all times until night time falls and, after returning from the evening game drive, you find your room has been

zipped up – you don’t want to sleep with the monkeys – and the deliciously romantic mosquito nets have been dropped (Madikwe is a malaria-free area). Of course, you would not be visiting Jaci’s if you were not a fan of wildlife. Jaci’s boasts one of the biggest wild dog populations in SA. The Big Five is also present. We saw four of the Five on our first day, including being greeted by a large herd of elephant before we’d even reached camp. Kids can join in the fun too, on a Jungle Drive just for them – we learnt first-hand about various animals’ prints, what they eat and so forth (yes, we trailed along, but it’s great fun to view animals with a bunch of enthusiastic youngsters). Some mid-afternoon snacks, with cold beers for the adults, ensured the drive home was comfortable and relaxed – apart from the four female lions who crossed our path and appeared to be stalking their evening meal … Or us. Besides the two daily game drives, there are also two swimming pools for the warmer months as well as a spa and a kids’ play area, but we recommend just chilling, because you couldn’t choose a more beautiful destination. Dining out is somewhat different here. Brunch is served after the morning game drive (rusks and coffee are mandatory accompaniments) and then dinner after the evening game drive. Three-course meals are the name of the game. You will certainly not go hungry, and on special evenings the camp offers buffets and entertainment in the bomas. What’s not to like? Eat alongside an open fire under the stars and then fall asleep to the sounds of hyenas laughing in the distance. It is a genuinely African experience. //+27 (0)83 700 2071, madikwe.com

We know that many ‘standard’ safaris will end up being boring for children, who are expected to sit quietly whilst entertainment isn’t guaranteed. Finding good, child-friendly lodges may seem the obvious choice – but only a few live up to their marketing promises. We discuss private guides with you

W

hat was regarded unusual ten years ago, is now becoming more and more popular: at a suitable camp, family safari holidays in Botswana can provide you and your children with an outstanding wildlife experience. Consider booking a private guide to get the most out of your family safari holidays in Botswana! It is true that a rather exclusive make up, a staid atmosphere and safety issues like game risks, high walkways and unguarded pools still make a lot of camps in Botswana not suitable for family safari holidays. That said, some smaller lodges and (mobile) safari camps are more flexible, e.g. concerning meal times and children's dietary requests, and so cater well to families with children. Furthermore there are a couple of accommodation options that offer slightly separated family suites or that are booked on an exclusive-use basis. Whichever option you choose, parents will often need to book a private vehicle and guide if they want to safari together with their children. This may sound like a rather inconvenient requirement - how-

Mozambique

M

ozambique impresses with pristine beaches and excellent marine wildlife. Therefore it's a worthwhile destination for family beach holidays with older children who can enjoy water-based activities and experience the Mozambican culture. However, parents with small children should bear in mind that the country is malarial. There isn't a vast choice of child-friendly accommodation for family holidays in Mozambique. This is due to the general lack of infrastructure in the interior of the country and a rather adult atmosphere at many of Mozambique's beach lodges, clearly aiming at honeymooners and couples. That said, for fairly active families, ideally with slightly older children, who enjoy watersports and are interested in marine life, family beach holidays to Mozambique can be great. To get a taste of adventure, there's even the option to spend your family holidays in Mozambique on an exclusively booked dhow, a traditional sailing boat!

N

amibia offers fantastic self-driving family safari holidays. However, as stunning as the country's scenery is, it's unlikely to keep your youngest entertained for hours. Therefore, family holidays here are best for families with older children, who are fine with longer drives they'll love the freedom and the sheer variety of a family holiday to Namibia. As accommodation for your family safari holidays in Namibia, we usually recommend smaller guest farms and lodges because these tend to be more flexible, for instance with regard to meal times. Many of them have a big garden and adjoining rooms specifically designed to accommodate families on Namibia safari holidays. You're unlikely to find special activities for your children, but a friendly and informal atmosphere will usually allow them to run around and be noisy. Alternatively, for ultimate privacy, consider Namibia's exclusive-use villas and houses! In addition, compared to other African countries, family safari holidays in Namibia can be considered as relatively safe: many lodges are set in areas with little dangerous game and all Namibia

holds a very low malarial risk. However, Namibia isn't only a destination for family safari holidays. We won't deny that its coastline doesn't make for 'classical' family beach holidays with azure, bath-warm water and palmtrees. Instead, you'll find a deserted stretch of barren land, scattered with ghostly shipwrecks and lapped by the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, where seals live in huge colonies. ith fun activities and the fascinating culture of the Maasai, Kenya offers great family safari holidays for older and fairly active children - who will often find the Maasai people particularly interesting to meet. At the beginning or end of your family safari head for the Kenya coast for some of the loveliest family beach holidays in Africa! Many of the lodges and camps that we feature in Kenya are well-suited for family beach and safari holidays, although almost all of them have age restrictions. In practice, these rules can often be bended so that you can go on family holidays with children younger than the theoretical age requirement. However, you should be aware that during family safari holidays in Kenya children need to be constantly supervised, because some camps are close to a river, most aren't fenced and game risks are usually high. Due to the layout of some lodges, for instance their high walkways, steep steps or missing handrails, parental supervision is additionally necessary.

Kenya

In general, even Kenya's most child-friendly lodges rarely have specific children's programmes. Nevertheless, in most cases the staff will show a very positive attitude towards younger visitors and may flexibly arrange activities off the ordinary schedule to make your Kenya family safari holidays as enjoyable as possible.

You'll find generally very friendly people here and simple, good-value lodges as well as the better-known luxurious retreats. Many of these places welcome children of all ages! Most travellers may imagine exclusive five-star resorts and costly private island retreats when thinking of holidays to the Seychelles. Indeed, these do offer high-quality accommodation and great flexibility on family beach holidays in the Seychelles - to those who don't mind a high price tag. Often, you'll also find remarkable services specifically for children at these places, from excellent child clubs to age-appropriate spa treatments. However, they aren't the only option. Choose between private villas and good-value places - many have facilities for selfcatering that appeal especially to families on a tight budget. Moreover, the Cape is well suited for selfdrives, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Many lodges in South Africa describe themselves as child-friendly and do accept children. Our onthe-ground experience in family safari holidays with small children enables us to pick those, which actively welcome children rather than just accept them. These stand out for activities specifically designed for children; flexibility e.g. concerning meal times and children's dietary requests; child-friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere so that children can run around and let off a bit of steam. ambia's private safari houses are definitely among our favourites for family safari holidays with older children who like a bit of adventure. Then they provide great flexibility, much private space and a relaxed atmosphere to a group of ideally eight travellers. Plus, Zambia offers very good wildlife and arguably the best guiding in Africa! Still feeling very 'wild' and a bit adventurous, Zambia isn't the first country we'd recommend for family safari holidays, especially with young children. However, if you have slightly older children, say 7+, and are looking for a family holiday off the beaten track, then a Zambia family safari can be the perfect choice. Zambia guides have to pass through a stringent system of exams before they're allowed to take charge of guests, which is why the country is known for guiding of an outstanding quality. This can make a massive difference to your Zambia family safari experience, in particular for the kids. Ask us about a guide experienced with children, who can tailor the safari around them! Note that there's a minimum age of 12 years for walks in Zambia's national parks.

For accommodation, consider the country's exclusive-use houses (see either among the properties below or on our extra page on Zambia's private houses), which come with their own kitchen and chef, plus private 4WD vehicle and guide. They excel in offering flexibility and privacy to travellers on family safari holidays in Zambia. Alternatively, and for more affordable Zambia family safari holidays, plenty of owner-run camps work well for families with slightly older children. The camps' guides are often good at child-friendly guiding, too.

Come for powdery white sand framed by shady palm trees and the sparkling turquoise water of shallow lagoons! For older children, it can be an educating and fun experience to explore the islands' pristine marine wildlife and coral reefs. Zanzibar is a fantastic destination for activities on and around the water, such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, snorkeling or boat trips. Many of these watersports have age restrictions, whereas others are also suitable for small children. For example, kayaks can be rented round every corner and at many hotels even children at the age of eight can get a taste of diving. However, you should be aware that the country is malarial, which is why we don't recommend Zanzibar family holidays with toddlers. On the plus side, parents needn't worry about game risks here.

Tanzania

W

ith excellent wildlife, lovely, white sandy island beaches and good transport links between them, Tanzania has huge potential for family safari and beach holidays. In reality, only a handful of safari camps and beach holiday lodges are suitable for family holidays in Tanzania; we've highlighted the best below. Family safari holidays in Tanzania Tanzania safaris seldom include kids clubs, but the amazing wildlife and environment, combined with safari activities designed for children, can make up for that. Start by considering the ages of your children, due to the malaria risk, we don't usually recommend a Tanzania safari for family holidays with toddlers. For slightly older children, around 6-12 years old, many safari camps and lodges are ruled out because of their open nature and high densities of big game. That said, parents might consider Hatari Lodge, near Arusha.

For children over about 8 years old the choices are wider, the larger 'hotel-style' lodges in Northern Tanzania have less wildlife wondering through them than small bush lodges, and so are safer for children. Linking these into a privately guided family safari holiday will work very well, especially if we arrange a guide who is experienced with children. That said - you might feel quite 'enclosed' in the closed vehicles; it's important that these trips are designed very carefully to be successful. For a more 'open-air' family safari in Tanzania, we would recommend the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park in Southern Tanzania. Camps here are smaller, with lighter footprints; they're more open and activities are more varied. Older children will love the open-topped vehicles, boat trips and just sitting around campfires at night. Do ask us about a private vehicle; it'll also make a massive difference! Beach holidays for families in Tanzania Because Tanzania's coast is seldom very far from its game reserves, you can easily combine family beach holidays with safaris in Tanzania without long internal flights!

guess I’ve been extraordinarily spoilt over the years. This island wasn’t my first and certainly won’t be my last! Islands off places such as Brazil, Australia, Maldives, Seychelles, Malta, Malaysia, Greece, Mauritius, Thailand, Spain, Mexico and Borneo have made the list, and so it’s fair to say that I’m a pretty good judge of island experiences. ‘First impressions count.’ It’s drummed into us from school, through personal relationships and certainly in business. And when it comes to hotels, islands and restaurants, they’re often the deal-breaker. What is it they say, you don’t get a chance to make a second impression? Although with an island it’s kind of a little different, as short of swimming or paying a lot to turn around,

or me it’s all about planes, large or small – travel brings out the adventurous romantic in me. Boarding a plane or alighting at my destination, I feel happy, alive, excited and free. So by the time I stepped off the little bird that flew me from Pemba to an island a short boat trip from Quilálea Island, I would have been as happy spending a couple of days carrying coconuts around (and believe me, there’s a lot of them) as relaxing on a beautiful island. A chance to spend a few days on a desert island isn’t to be sniffed at, certainly when compared to a few days at the office, and I

Feature destination Stepping off the boat you are greeted by the manager, your personal butler and the dive instructor (and general island bird and plant person if he can’t get you under the water), smiles abound, and then everyone quickly disappears and you start your island holiday. The most important person in your life for the next few days is your butler, not because anything is difficult or because you are left wanting, but merely because, for him, you are the most important person in his life for the next few days. And therein lies the difference between Quilálea and most other islands: it is personal. It is very personal! Never invasive, never pushy, always there but never there – qualities with which a person is born, recognised by Quilálea as important, and selected and fine-tuned by the island’s management team. The butler subtly forms a partnership with you, quickly tunes in to your needs and desires and smoothly makes each component of your visit a pleasure. Coming a very close second as the most important person in your life for the next few days is the chef. Don’t get me started on island food elsewhere: often slop, often boring or too elaborate and often a lot of other things that makes a burger back home appealing. The chef at Quilálea, however, is right on the money – young, enthusiastic and with the right

amount of humility, he prepares fresh, exciting food. Exciting in that it does a lot for the eye and even more for the palate. It’s home cooking, professionally done, with the right balance of flavours, the right size of culinary challenge and, importantly, the right portion size, allowing you to get to his mouthwatering desserts without feeling as if you need a round-the-island swim to work off the calories. Of course, if you feel you do need a round-the-island swim – a fraction far, although you can walk it in 45 minutes or so – there’s the island whistler for you. No, not a rare species of the feathered variety, but rather the young Afrikaans dive instructor, whistling away as he adds yet another personal dimension to the island vibe. Whether in the water, below it, on various boats or on land, his switch is always in the ‘on’ position – again,  he’s not in your face, but there for you when you feel the need to shake it up a gear or two. And having dived all around the world and seen some amazing things under water, I can easily say that he’s by far the most excitable person under water ever, making every dive memorable. Throw in a spa with an amazing view, lunches and dinners set for you in some beautiful, romantic locations and large bedrooms with tasteful island decor and you have close to the perfect romantic island escape.

Hartmann says these highlights, as well as the day-to-day performance of former students, contributes to the overall image of the SA Chefs Academy. “This year has seen a marked increase in block release students, which shows the faith that the industry puts in us. We are excited about the prospect of training chefs that have a huge passion for and commitment to the industry. This is very important to us and we hope to continue to work closely with hotels and restuarants at this level.” The reputation of the SA Chefs Academy has also attracted significant partnerships with leading companies, including Bosch, Patleys, Rialto, Ecolab, Tydstroom, Nulaid, Kerry (formerly Orley Products) and Olive Pride. rafted from selected low-yielding Stellenbosch vineyards in the heart of red wine country, the 2011 vintages of the flagship Director’s Reserve and the Classique are both wines of great elegance and distinction. These wines have an impressive lineage spanning more than a decade, with two Veritas Double Gold medals and a Classic Wine Trophy already in The High Road hall of fame. The High Road Director’s Reserve 2011 is a Cabernet Sauvignon driven blend of four classic Bordeaux varieties matured in 100% new French oak. Beautifully integrated and complex on the nose and palate, this wine is intensely rich in fruit and wood nuances supported by a backbone of full, ripe tannins. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Merlot (27%), Cabernet Franc (13%) and Petit Verdot (3%), it is a definitive expression of the 2011 vintage, with its elegance and richly-layered fullness. “An amalgamation of four Bordeaux varieties, the 2011 Director’s Reserve is a fine example of a wine’s ability to allow the different components to work together to create a structured and well-integrated wine with intense depth and complexity,” says winemaker Mark CarmichaelGreen, who believes it will reveal even more vibrant cassis and berry fruit if left to develop further over time. Differing slightly in style with less exposure to new wood, The High Road Classique 2011 is an accessible fruit-forward wine with signature soft, elegant tannins. The wine is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Merlot (33%) and Cabernet Franc (9%), and teems with black cherries, berries and mulberries on the nose and palate. “Never overpowering, the wood brings a balance to the wine and is well-integrated with the fruit whilst the tannins are subtle, soft and full,” explains Carmichael-Green, who feels that, although eminently drinkable now, the wine will age well with careful cellaring. Founded in 2003 by owners Les Sweidan and Mike Church (both insurance industry kingpins with a passion for wine), The High Road is committed to producing exceptional South African wines with the elegance, intrinsic depth and uniqueness of the classic Bordeaux red at core but expressing a sense of place that is unique to Stellenbosch. “A

rt is very important to us, and it gives us tremendous pleasure,” says co-owner AnneMarie Ferreira. “We therefore wanted to develop a concept whereby we could promote art to the public in various available spaces, in and around our winery and delicatessen. We also felt art was a means to satisfy the sense of sight, which in turn would complement the other senses one can stimulate at Tokara through our wines, olive oils and cuisine.” Forty-five students from the Marié Stander School of Art literally transformed wine into art by dipping their paintbrushes in 2011 Tokara Shiraz in an attempt to visually portray their interpretations of this year’s theme: 2014 World Design Capital – Cape Town. Marié Stander, who is herself a practising artist, encourages her students to work in a variety of mediums, from oils and ink to charcoal and pencil. So painting with wine was a welcome challenge. “I’m very involved with the creation process. Whenever we start a new brief, I show them different examples and ideas – to get the inspirational juices flowing,” she says. The school has been involved with “Wine Made Art” for the past four years, and the students have over time perfected the method of preparing the wine for use as an art medium. Stander says that getting the rich burgundy colour you see in a glass of Shiraz to translate to the

surface being painted on is tricky, because if used as it is, the wine becomes a lilac grey colour. “It’s very pale, but you can’t reduce it too much because it becomes too syrupy.” So after much experimentation, she and her students decided to use an old Voortrekker recipe for ink: boiling a wine reduction with a rusty nail and a white Protea leaf, creating the rich colour seen in this year’s art. Stander discourages her students from using found objects or photographs taken by other people, so this project saw them venturing out onto the streets of Cape Town to find their inspiration. She is very impressed with the concepts and quality of the work chosen for this year’s exhibition. Mark Lester, Marketing Manager at Tokara, is also impressed: “The quality is once again truly magnificent. The theme was relatively broad – some artists interpreted it literally and others less so. The visuals therefore touch on a variety of subjects ranging from historic to modern, capturing cultural and everyday scenes of Cape Town. The works portray a very diverse city, which Cape Town has truly come to represent.” Twenty selected artworks from this year’s “Wine Made Art” project are on currently displayed in Tokara’s on-site gallery until the end of January 2015. A New

G

rande Provence Heritage Wine Estate has launched a new rosé under its signature label just in time for summer. Paying homage to its French roots in Franschhoek, the new Grande Provence Rosé 2014, with its beautiful pale pink summer blush, is made in the classic crisp, dry Provençal style. The wine, made from 100% Franschhoek grapes, has a delicate fruity character with nuances of apple and fresh berries. "After a visit to Provence, Alex van Heeren, owner of Grande Provence, fell in love with their dry style rosé wines. One thing led to another and we decided to create one of our own," says Cellarmaster Karl Lambour, who attributes the fruit forward character of the wine to the ideal Franschhoek climate. “We used our very best Merlot and Cabernet grapes and bottled the wine early to present a fresh, uncomplicated style,” explains Lambour. Grande Provence Rosé 2014 can be enjoyed on its own as an invigorating summer sip, or with tuna sushi or sashimi for a delicious taste combination. The wine sells at R80 at the Grande Provence Tasting Room. For added convenience, it can be acquired online at www.grandeprovence.co.za. Purchases of 12 bottles or more qualify for free delivery anywhere is South Africa.

Another Champion Gewürztraminer from Neethlingshof Text: Monique Fourie Image © Neethlingshof

N

eethlingshof has released the latest vintage of its celebrated Gewürztraminer, a highly-awarded wine made from some of the Stellenbosch Wine Estate’s oldest vines. Emphasising its stature, the Gewürztraminer 2014 has been issued in bold new packaging. The wine is famous as one of only a few estate Gewürztraminer wines made in South Africa. “It is unique because it is made in the dryer style, as opposed to those from Alsace, Germany, and others in this country,” says winemaker De Wet Viljoen. “It makes the wine more versatile with food and, in light of our warmer conditions, the wine is refreshing and very aromatic.” The vines that provided the grapes are 30 years old – a rarity in South African terms. The vineyard was dryland farmed and cooled by sea breezes, which ensured slow, even ripening. The result is a bright, straw-coloured wine of fine balance and concentration. Aromas of Turkish delight and rose petals, with hints of jasmine and honeysuckle, are prominent. On the palate it is off-dry with a spicy character, traces of Turkish delight and an abundance of litchi that concludes with a zesty finish. A necessary inclusion in any good restaurant wine-list, this wine is an ideal companion for liver and fish pâtés and lightly spiced Asian dishes. It also makes a good partner for fruity desserts. Neethlingshof’s Gewürztraminer achieved a four-star rating in the Platter’s South African Wine Guide and was voted the best Gewürztraminer in South Africa at the Novare Terroir wine awards earlier this year. Previous vintages have achieved gold at the Veritas South African wine and spirit awards and the International Wine & Spirit Competition. Its latest incarnation has been released in a traditional Alsace bottle, bringing this unique and classic wine into its own. Grapes have been grown on Neethlingshof for more than 300 years and today, both red and white varietals are cultivated, of which Gewürztraminer is one of the mainstays. E

ntering the restaurant is like being welcomed into a world wholly apart from the city outisde. The walls are painted in tones of warm burnt orange, with a multitude of gold-labelled brown laboratory bottles creating a striking feature that whets both the curiosity and the appetite upon arrival. The unique bottles are filled with flavour compounds that artist and chef Jacques Erasmus has developed in the kitchen. The result of his creative wizardry, they are aptly referred to as Flavour Intense. When Chef Jacques the alchemist discovers the perfect blend for a Kashmiri chai, achieves the perfect balance for his black dukkah, turns sundried tomatoes into dust or a surplus of citrus fruit into a soft powder, the results are bottled to be shared not only in the restaurant but by those wanting to take them home and create a bit of magic themselves. In the four years since its opening in October 2010, Hemelhuijs has undergone several transformations. The initial black walls gave way to green, then grey was introduced. The art changed, the displays were reinvented, and the floral features styled according to the changing mood. The menu of course also changes according to the season. It is this constantly evolving

creativity that has gathered Chef Jacques his loyal following of design- and food-obsessed fans. His is not a static style. Nor is it the result of the whims of a man unable to make up his mind. His creative expression is a fluid fluctuation of mood and time. At Hemelhuijs there is an unspoken, constant invitation to return again and again, and to be inspired anew with each visit. The menu is sophisticated and authentic. While beautifully presented on an array of handmade and precious crockery, there is no pretention, only elegant simplicity and a sincere regard and respect for food. Chef Jacques’ Gold Collection Tableware is another striking feature of the establishment. Based on the Bone Collection (which was inspired by the matt tones of slaked lime and bleached bone), the Gold Collection uses a pure gold compound and undergoes five firings in a kiln. It is the most opulent of all Chef Jacques’ tableware collections. Inspired by his fascination with the mythical stories of heroes, kings, fairytales, and the godly beliefs of the Egyptians and ancient Sumerians, the vessels embody a lively imagination. The alchemy of Hemelhuijs takes place when a childhood favourite of soft mieliepap is simply served 66

with orange blossom honey and salted butter – in a gold bowl. When the heat of the porridge melts the butter and honey and the reflection of the bowl causes it to look like tiny rivers of gold flowing around the porridge. It has all the elements of magic you once believed in as a child. This dish has become a talking point for all the right reasons. Only a chef confident in his craft would present an ingredient of such apparent ordinariness with such simplicity. But Chef Jacques knows when to let ingredients speak for themselves. For him cooking is not about outsmarting his guests. It is about bringing them joy. This is just one of many such examples of magic created through culinary confidence, simplicity, and a touch of creative genius. The name Hemelhuijs has become synonymous with indulgence. Every visit is a feast of some sort - whether it be the discovery of new flavour combinations, the visual delight of the surroundings, or simply the luxury of drinking something warm from a beautifully handcrafted cup. In a world that is far too rushed and far too drab, a visit to Hemelhuijs will remind you that beauty and magic are in fact all around us. For more information visit www.hemelhuijs.co.za.

n 1990 an expedition of Cambridge scientists arrived at the Plains of Nechisar, tucked between the hills of the Great Rift Valley in the Gamo Gofa Province of Ethiopia. On that expedition, 315 species of birds were seen; 61 species of mammal and 69 species of butterfly were identified; 20 species of dragonflies and damselflies were spotted; 17 reptile species were recorded; three frog species were filed; and various plants were listed. The wing of a road-killed bird was packed into a brown paper bag, and was to become the most famous wing in the world. When the specimens finally arrived at the British Natural History Museum, the world of science was set aflutter. It seemed that the wing was unique, but the question arose - can you name a species for the first time based only on the description of a wing, gathered from just one wing? After much to and fro confirmation was unanimous, and the new species was announced. And that is when birdwatchers like Vernon began to dream. This book is more than a boy’s adventure in search of the rarest bird in the world. It is a meditation on nature, on ways of seeing, on the naming of things, and on why we feel so compelled to label. Part detective trail, part love affair and pure storytelling at its best.

Kapama Karula

Kapama Private Game Reserve occupies a vast area between the northern Drakensberg Mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park, in the north east of South Africa. It spans 13 000 hectares of magnificent African bushveld, and is teeming with wildlife. The most secluded and prestigious of four luxury lodges on the reserve, Kapama Karula is set on the banks of the perennial Klaserie River. Meaning ‘place of peace’ in the local language, Kapama Karula exudes calmness and depicts the pinnacle of luxury five-star safari accommodation. Five spacious suites are each equipped with a full range of luxury comforts and amenities. For an experience that’s closer to nature and authentically African, Kapama Karula offers guests the opportunity to sleep in one of two traditional Meru tents. While the lodge’s open-plan lounge and bar are spacious yet cosy, the African sunshine can really be enjoyed on the outside wooden deck, with views over the meandering river. A new addition to the lodge, the multipurpose library is equipped with audiovisual equipment.

01 Health sunburn is a potential health hazard

S

ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.

02 Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

03 Travel Options Air

There are several domestic airlines in South Africa, including South African Airways, South African Express, Interlink, Airlink and British Airways. Low-cost carriers include: 1time, Kulula and Mango.

Bus

Greyhound (+27 83 915 9000), InterCape (+27 21 380 4400) and Translux (+27 861 589 282) are the three main bus services in South Africa. All flights and bus tickets can be booked via Computicket at www.computicket.com or by calling +27 83 915 8000.

Trains

For budget trips across the country, Shosholoza Meyl is the best service available. Book online at www.shosholozameyl.co.za and enquiries can be directed to +27 86 000 8888. If you decide to splurge, though, there are three outstanding options. The famous Blue Train (+27 12 334 8459), Rovos Rail (+27 12 315 8242) and Premier Classe (+27 86 000 8888) are luxurious liners with all the bells and whistles.

Cars

Most of the main car rental companies have outlets at the international airports and in major centres. In South Africa, we drive on the left side of the road. The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. Foreign members of the Automobile Association (AA) can register as a temporary member in South Africa at any local AA branch. For more information, phone +27 83 843 2222.

A Note for Smokers South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
