PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE busy holiday season is The behind us and some of our
members have been fortunate to have enough of the white stuff to open snowmobile trails. I was looking at where the trails are currently open on the state map just the other day. It’s hard to believe that only the southeastern part of the state currently has enough snow, or frozen swamps and lakes to groom. Talking with many of our members, especially in the northwestern area, things are getting pretty rough on the many taverns that rely heavily on recreational tourism. I wish them the best and hope things change soon. I have a feeling that, with gas prices stable and snowmobile enthusiasts itching to get out, business should pick up real fast provided some snow sticks. Meanwhile, our beloved Packers sure made things interesting down the homestretch and into the playoffs, hopefully giving us a look at things to come in the future, as well as in continuing our dominance of the Bears. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to attend our final game of the season and help cheer them on. It’s always icing on the cake to make the five-hour trip and come out with a dominating win in a game that had so much riding on it. To cap things off, I also had some time to make a couple of stops around town, and visit with some members and their staff. It continues to be a busy time for the TLW and our staff. We are planning and registering participants for our annual Legislative Day on March 5 in Madison. You may notice that, this year, the event is free to attend as we are finalizing a sponsor to help ensure we can draw a large crowd. Although we have plenty to celebrate with the passing of Assembly Bill 304 (the bill passed to establish a dedicated alcohol regulation organization in Wisconsin), the fight never stops as we are continuing to see bills being drafted like Assembly Bill 866. This bill would allow all municipalities to become direct competitors of ours by selling alcohol and creating an unfair disadvantage for us. If you have not contacted your elected officials, please do so immediately and join us during Legislative Day. Our Convention Committee, along with our friends from the Walworth County Tavern League, have also been keeping busy finalizing things for our 2024 Spring Conference & Trade Show from April 8 to 11 at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa in beautiful Lake Geneva. The exhibitor booths are filling up, the keynote speaker is booked and the seminars are scheduled. If you have never been to one of our conventions before or even if you are on the fence, www.tlw.org
"We just finished up filming a new SafeRide commercial. It was time to freshen things up and we’ll continue to promote our successful program. One of the new highlights is to celebrate our milestone in reaching over 1 million rides!" you will not be disappointed. Registration, as well as room blocks, are open on our website, so sign up and let’s break our previous attendance records! In other exciting news, we just finished up filming a new SafeRide commercial. It was time to freshen things up and we’ll continue to promote our successful program. One of the new highlights is to celebrate our milestone in reaching over 1 million rides! Once we receive the approval needed by the Department of Transportation, you should start seeing the commercial statewide. Our building has received numerous solid offers and the board has voted to move forward with the one deemed the best fit. TLW leadership has been discussing other high-priority issues in great length as well and that information will be coming out in the months ahead. I would like to thank all of the leagues that have invited me to various meetings, fundraisers or events over the last couple of months. Some have been pretty interesting to say the least. (What happens in Rusk County stays in Rusk County!) The hospitality you all exhibit when I show up is amazing and I truly appreciate the time spent when I’m in town. I look forward to many of the events on my schedule already and, if you want me to ever join a meeting or event, please let me know. That is it for this time, but I look forward to seeing you all again during one of our many events coming up. Cheers!

Annual Legislative Day Each year, the TLW hosts Legislative Day in Madison. This event offers the opportunity for our members to participate in a truly grassroots lobbying effort. The 2024 event on March 5 will mark the 39th year the TLW gathers to learn about legislative issues facing our industry. As always, this is an important day for the association, providing us with the opportunity to display our strength and commitment to our industry. Please visit tlw.org/legislative-day for more information.

YOU HAVE A VOICE Unlike other associations that are run from the top down, the Tavern League is run from the bottom up. Our members shape the policies of our organization. The Tavern League Board of Directors and Executive Officers communicate directly with TLW members, and are guided by their input when setting organizational policies. They make decisions based on the ideas and concerns of our membership.

SOCIETY INSURANCE 3 TIPS: HOW TO FIND NEW CUSTOMERS FOR YOUR BAR 1. Prioritize Alternate Audience Locations
Simply opening up an additional location may not always be feasible, but there are opportunities to target prospects in select geographic areas. If you have the means, consider participating in or hosting local events where you can highlight new or favorite drinks.
2. Position Your Business for More Reviews
New prospects are going to Google “food or drinks near me,” and reviews can help your local ranking capability. Google is much more likely to display restaurants and bars with positive reviews. Make sure you’re managing and improving your reputation.
3. Incentivize Sharing

INDUSTRY EDUCATION Food Manager Certification
Getting an Education Bartending Courses Online TIPS Bartender Training Course The eTIPS on-premise training course is an online program designed to teach those who sell and serve alcohol ways to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking. This two- to three-hour online course addresses concerns specific to restaurants, hotels, bars, nightclubs, banquet halls, private parties and other on-premise liquor license holders that serve alcohol by the drink. eTIPS certification is valid for three years. Online Bartender Course from 360Training
T
he Wisconsin Department of Health mandates that at least one person in each establishment must be certified by the state as a food manager within 90 days of opening a new or existing restaurant. The only exceptions are Portage and Kenosha counties, where certification must occur before opening for business. Certification is accomplished by passing an exam on safe food-handling practices. The TLW is one of a few groups to offer classes. Our experienced instructors have taught tens of thousands of hospitality employees over the last 28 years. They are people from the industry who know what to teach and how to teach it. The information covered allows participants to learn the proper techniques for handling food in a safe and convenient manner. With constant flux in the food industry, our instructors also review all changes to the Food Code to keep food-handlers up to date. Certified food managers must take the written exam every five years after their initial completion of the program. When the certified person is not on premise, however, the person in charge must demonstrate the same knowledge. Establishments that have five or fewer cooks or food-handlers across the entire staff may qualify for the small operator’s permit under Wisconsin licensure of Food Safety Training for Small Operators.
With 360training.com, you can take your bartending certification training and exam anytime and anywhere you have an internet connection. The Wisconsin Responsible Beverage Server Training is a four-hour, interactive e-learning course that teaches students how to responsibly sell and serve alcoholic beverages in Wisconsin. This certification is good for three years. For more information about both courses, visit tlw.org/bartender-courses.
Food Manager Certification Always Food Safe, an American National Standards Institute-accredited e-learning provider for the food service sector, approves the TLW's instructors and provides us with state-approved exams for our classes. We provide certification and educational classes that are available at several locations throughout the state. Our certifications are valid for five years. For more information, please visit tlw.org/foodsafety-courses.
For the protection of your customers and your business, the TLW is proud to offer this certification with over 100 classes a year throughout the state. Visit tlw.org/food-safety-courses to register or, if you have questions about the food safety certification, call the TLW Food Safety Hotline at (608) 296-9226. Due to a change in 2019, certified food managers no longer have a 30-day grace period after the expiration of their license or certificate. It is the responsibility of the license holder to get the proper certification in the mandated time.

across the state, the foundation helps fuel such philanthropic efforts as VetsRoll and Children of Restaurant Employees (CORE), as well as the Tavern League’s SafeRide Program. Thanks to its matching funds program, the foundation also supports local tavern leagues and individuals in their efforts to benefit organizations and people in need by offering up to $2,000 in matching state funds from the TLW.
The TLW and its members’ impact is tremendous when it comes to helping charities across Wisconsin. For example, the total amount of donations in 2023 was $15.3 million in support of almost 17,500 charities throughout our state. “Local taverns, bars and restaurants have a long history in Wisconsin as a gathering place for celebrating or commiserating while spending time with friends,” says Pete Madland, TLW outreach director. “Every member of the TLW lives and works in their community. And they believe in supporting efforts to make their community an even better place to live and work.” www.tlw.org
