Title: The reection from the truth
Ekkaphop Phatthawong ekka With a digital camera and any photo editing software, anyone can now create “works of art,” or at least their version of what they think art is.
The introduction of digital cameras to the world in the past decade has made everyone a photographer, and when the digital picture can be placed on a computer and have all the flaws easily washed away, “real” photographers now find themselves competing with anyone who has a camera and a PC. But, as we learn from one of these real photographers, photography is an art, and it requires special skills, training and talent to create true “photographic art”. Anyone can go and buy a brush, canvas and some paint, but only a very rare few will create something that is truly meaningful. Ekkaphop Phatthawong was a Bangkok based photographer, and now resident in Koh Samui, who has thousands of photographs in his portfolio.
A graduate of fine arts from Chiang Mai University, Eakka, as he is known, began in the film advertising industry, but soon discovered still photography to be his passion. By taking his learned advertising experience and applying it to photography, Eakka was able to create stunning imagery for his clients. “In my opinion, I think photography is both a science and an art,” says Eakka, “which all photographers have to learn and practice all the time to discover their own style and identity. The science part is to learn the principle functions of light and time and how it applies to the camera. It is the same as
an artist who must learn how to use paints, brushes and other tools to complete a project and convey the idea or story they want to communicate.” Eakka compares photography to art in the sense that each photographer must develop the skill of imagining what they want to get out of a particular picture. He says that the photographer has to create the beauty in his mind before he can create it with a camera. “To grow this capability, all photographers have to practice and work hard continually,” says Eakka. Ansel Adams once said, “Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art.” Eakka strongly believes in this statement. He says that, unlike a painter or sculptor, a photographer has to have a keen eye and have the ability to turn a picture of any object, scene or person into a beautiful work of art. He feels that true photographers must have good observation skills and be able to recognize when such a situation presents itself.
But, like paintings and sculptures, photographs have a stronger ability to express deep emotions and are better at transferring ideas and feelings through to the observer of the photograph. Eakka also says that many times he will look at a photograph after he has taken it and see and feel things that he did not notice when he took the shot. But that is one of the things that make a good photographer stand out from the rest – attention to detail, and lot’s of patience: waiting for the light to be right for example. If it is too bright, the shot is ruined, too dark, same thing. Most of us that have picked up a digital camera adapt an ‘aim and shoot’ policy, meaning that we point the camera at our target (be it living or animated) and hope for the best, working on the principal that if you take enough shots, one or two will surely be good enough! This is a cardinal sin for a professional photographer, who will never allow their work to be rushed, as this basically insults their artistic integrity. Quantity does not come into the equation; it is the quality that matters – better to have 5 excellent photos than hundreds of poor ones.
