£3,000 needed for fire-hit Hey Oxford. charity to carry on helping By Eva Astreinidou SUPPORTERS of a charity shop destroyed in a suspected arson attack are trying to raise £3,000 so the lives of those it helps are not affected. The Abingdon branch of Acacia UK could be out of action for the best part of a year, during which time the charity will be losing vital income as well as struggling to replace the storage and office space it lost in the blaze on September 25. Ian Middleton, a keen supporter of Acacia – action for children and communities in Africa – started the campaign and urged people to “show these vandals that they won’t win”. He has so far helped raise over £1,000 through the online JustGiving appeal for the cause which offers support and schooling to children living with disabilities and mental health issues in sub-Saharan Africa. He said: “I understand that the

money raised will be used to help them refurbish the store and maybe to open a pop-up store in the meantime while they wait for the damage to the building to be repaired.” He added: “The charity and I have been knocked out by the generosity of so many people in Abingdon and the surrounding area and would like to thank everyone who has donated so far and encourage those who haven’t to give what they can and spread the word. “Although the staff and volunteers have vowed to restore the shop and carry on with their amazing work, the mindless actions of arsonists will doubtless impact on the lives of many hugely disadvantaged children. “The target is £3,000, but it would be great to see more. Let’s demonstrate how the generosity and kindness of the people of Abingdon and beyond can still make a difference where it counts.” The store contained a large amount of donated stock, project archives and accounts. A 58-year-old man from Abingdon was arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with this incident. He has been released under investigation. Following the incident, investigating officer Sergeant Leon Astley said: “Thankfully no one was injured – but the consequences could have been extremely serious.” To donate, visit https://tinyurl.com/ ybhfzyhx.

Fun for everyone at town’s street fair A PARTY atmosphere took over Abingdon as thousands flocked to the town’s Michaelmas fair. From thrill-seeking rides to toy cars and a beautifully decorated carousel, the fair on Monday and Tuesday had something for all. The fair runs for a mile down

the length of the High Street from Market Place and down Ock Street, and has been recognised as the longest in Europe. Originating from the medieval era, the fair returns for two days in October every year, bringing nostalgic memories to older

residents and fresh excitement for young children. The smaller runaway fair returns on Monday – the tradition dates back to when workers hired for the Michaelmas fair who were unhappy with their treatment literally ran away the week after.

Man fined £1,300 for shooting pigeon in tree A PENSIONER who fatally shot a pigeon as it perched in a neighbour’s tree has been fi ned £1,300. At Friday’s court appearance Lister received a £500 fi ne and was told to pay £750 costs and a £50 victim surcharge. Magistrates also issued a forfeiture order on the air rifle used to shoot the pigeon.

InBrief Buses to replace trains at weekend

PASSENGERS have been advised to avoid the railways this weekend after Network Rail announced emergency electrification work. The ‘vital’ work will mean no trains will run between Didcot, Newbury, Reading and London between 2am on Saturday and the start of service on Monday. Work will be carried out between Maidenhead and Didcot Parkway in preparation for new GWR trains from January 2018. Bus replacement services will operate between Slough, Reading, and Didcot Parkway.

Glasses stolen after wedding

HUNDREDS of glasses and a wine barrel were stolen from a church in Oxford after a wedding. Police are appealing for witnesses ‘as a matter of urgency’ after a theft of a total of 800 glasses and a 1.5m-tall barrel on September 3. The glasses, which were a mixture of tumblers, champagne flutes and wine glasses, were stacked in crates outside St Aldates Church in Pembroke Square in Oxford. They were taken overnight after 9.55pm. Also taken was a wooden wine half-barrel with the words Vina Tobia. The barrel and the trays holding the glasses were stamped with the company name The Oxford Wine Company. Contact police on 101 with any information.

Protesters unite against drone warfare PEACE campaigners from all over Oxfordshire came out with placards and flags to protest against mass surveillance and drone warfare. Members from Oxford, Abingdon, Faringdon, Kidlington and Didcot made a

stand at a united Oxfordshire peace campaign outside RAF Croughton earlier this week. After a peace march around the air base near Oxford, the protestors enjoyed folk songs and poetry readings and heard speakers from the global

network against weapons and nuclear power in space. This was one of 44 actions wordwide, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Outer Space Treaty, an international agreement to use outer space only for peaceful purposes.

Worker injured in explosion at factory A WORKER was left with burns to his face following an explosion at Osney Mead. Fire crew manager Kevin Morgan confi rmed a man had been taken by ambulance to the John Radcliffe Hospital with facial burns following the incident at the Shirtworks factory on Friday. Mr Morgan said: “Three fi re crews and a hazardous materials

officer from Slade Park, Abingdon and Didcot fi re stations attended.” According to reports, a malfunctioning piece of equipment at the factory was the source of the explosion. David Gallagher, spokesman for the South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We were called at 1pm with the caller reporting that a 20-year-

old man had been injured when a gas appliance exploded. “Fortunately he had only sustained minor flash burns to his face and after initial treatment was then taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.” A spokesperson for the police said: “[There were] no evacuations, [and] no criminal investigation.”

Turning to the not-so dark side to boost charity funds

Darth Vader embraced his pink side

ABINGDON was awash with pink over the weekend as part of breast cancer awareness month. The well-attended event featured everyone from Darth Vader to belly dancers and people in the area who ventured down to the market square on Saturday. Visitors could enjoy cake, balloon art, entertainment and a photo booth, all for a worthy cause. The event, organised by Abingdon-based Against Breast Cancer was opened by Jan Morter, the town’s mayor, and aimed to raise money for life-saving research into the disease. Businesses could also take part in the ‘pink window’ competition, dressing their shop fronts in the colour.

InBrief Homes plan for historic building

FireďŹ ghters did their bit to raise funds The winners of the coveted prize were Masons Wool, followed by Masons Fabric and La Baguette. Storm Troopers from the UK Garrison, Darth Vader and Minnie and Mickey Mouse also made guest appearances. The Crown & Thistle also took part, selling out of burgers with all proďŹ ts going to the charity.

ÂŁ8million bid for new link road By Eva Astreinidou FUNDING for a new road would help provide vital infrastructure for a development of 1,500 homes. An ÂŁ8million bid has been submitted to the government to build the Wantage eastern link road giving direct access to the Crab Hill site. The road would also provide a clear route between the Grove Airfield development and the A417 east of Wantage as well as connecting this to the A338 near Mably Way. The new road would also help keep

through-traffic away from Charlton Primary School. If the Vale of the White Horse bid is successful it will contribute to the cost of the road along with other sources of funding, including housing developer contributions from the airfield and Kingsgrove – the new name for Crab Hill – developments. Council leader Matthew Barber said: “I think everybody agrees this road is absolutely vital. Securing this funding from the government would mean we can get it built more quickly. “We’re working hard to ensure the

open day Saturday 14th October 2017 10am to 3pm

infrastructure is in place before the majority of the houses are built. County councillor for Wantage and Grove Jenny Hannaby said: “I have been pressing for the eastern link road to be constructed before Crab Hill and Grove airfield developments are completed to take traffic away from using estate roads leading through Charlton village and Charlton Road. “I am hopeful this bid is successful to allow this vital road to be delivered earlier in the construction programme. The Section 106 agreement, which outlines the fi nancial contributions

that developers are planning to make, includes a significant contribution to the link road, but that money will be paid over a number of years while the houses are built. A share of the potential government funding would act as an advance, to enable the link road to be built quicker. When the developer contributions from the airfield scheme come forward, they can be redeployed onto other projects, such as the link road north of Grove to connect the airfield development with the A338 north of the Williams F1 factory.

ONE of Abingdon’s most historic buildings could be turned into affordable homes. Old Abbey House could be redeveloped by Vale of the White Horse District Council as the fi rst council-built housing for more than a decade. The council has said it intends to develop the former town council offices using fi nancial contributions from other developments including the Old Gaol. Council leader Matthew Barber said: “Using money from commercial developers this is the perfect opportunity to make use of a vacant office building in the heart of the community and provide much-needed affordable homes for local people. Details of the plan, including the number of homes will all be subject to planning permission and approval.

Councils on move

TWO councils are fi nally ‘going home’ after their offices were set on fi re in an arson attack nearly three years ago. South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils are returning to their former site at Crowmarsh Gifford after being in temporary accommodation at Milton Park following the fi re in January 2015. The councils have now concluded that the most cost-effective solution is to move back to the site that is owned by SODC. The councils will now work to prepare the site to build a new, smaller headquarters.

Help shape the future of town By Eva Astreinidou PLANS to build 1,500 new homes in Wantage have been renamed as people are being asked to play a part in bringing the project to life. St Modwen, the leading developer for the 227-acre Crab Hill site, is paying homage to Wantage and is now calling the project Kingsgrove, ahead of a consultation event on Saturday. When complete, Kingsgrove will also feature a primary school and neighbourhood centre, all set around a central park. Now, the developers are to consult with the community on the neighbourhood centre, which will include sports and recreation areas, community facilities, a pub and restaurant, shops and offices. Rob Draper, land director at St Modwen said: “We are asking groups, clubs and local people to help formulate the plans for the neighbourhood centre and community facilities – not only for the new residents of Kingsgrove but for the wider community. This is an opportunity to design and bring about new facilities to not only extend what is available, but to also plug gaps in provision for the wider area.”

He added that the developers want to bring enhancements to the town that Wantage and Grove ‘can be proud of’. The new name for the scheme is inspired by King Alfred the Great who was born in Wantage and, historically, apple tree orchards, or groves, were abundant in the area. Julie Mabberley, campaign manager of the Wantage and Grove Campaign Group, said: “King Alfred is important to Wantage so we like the idea of linking the name to him. “Consultation on the community infrastructure is also good news. We are happy that local groups are being consulted.” Kingsgrove will be delivered in stages, with plans for 70 homes in the fi rst phase (Phase 1A) on land east of Wantage Cricket Club already submitted for consideration. Wantage town council had voiced concerns about the proximity of houses to the cricket ground and asked for action to be taken to mitigate the risk of balls hit out of the ground. The drop-in consultation workshops and exhibition will be held between 11am and 4pm at 29-30 Market Place. To comment on Phase 1A, visit tinyurl.com/yarltsk8

InBrief Graffiti on sign

ANTI-ISLAMIC graffiti was sprayed on the Welcome to Shrivenham road sign that greets people as they drive into the village. Police are looking for witnesses following the racially-aggravated criminal damage at Longcot Road which allegedly took place on September 26. Investigating officer PC Michael Goodenough, said: “This is the second such incident in three months. This can cause distress to people in the community and will not be tolerated.”

Zebra crossing plan A Jaguar Formula E racing car at GKN’s new Abingdon home

Next generation transport A COMPANY that develops technologies and systems for the next generation of vehicles has unveiled a new base in Abingdon. Automotive technology manufacturer GKN Driveline will develop state-of-the-art electric vehicle technologies for use on the road and in motorsport. The site near the science park on Barton Lane will be a hub for composites and additive manufacturing. It will focus on electric motors, energy storage and lightweight structures to help create lighter,

quieter and more efficient electric vehicles. Phil Swash, CEO of multinational GKN, a partner of Formula E team Panasonic Jaguar Racing, said the new centre “will deliver significant benefi ts to electric vehicle, motorsport and off-highway applications”. The Abingdon base is the former home of Williams Hybrid Power (WHP), which developed fl ywheel technology for motorsport and commercial vehicles. GKN bought WHP for £8million in 2014.

PEOPLE are being asked for their opinions on a new zebra crossing for Station Road in Didcot. The new crossing would be 35 metres east of the Station Road roundabout with Foxhall Road with the aim of improving pedestrian safety in the area. For more information and to have your say before November 3, visit http://consultations.oxfordshire. gov.uk.

Brandon Luft, left, with colleagues in Iraq, is taking on the 25-day march to raise funds for PAPYRUS A SOLDIER from Abingdon who lost one of his close friends is halfway through a tough challenge to help young people contemplating suicide. Brandon Luff, 25, is currently serving in Iraq with the 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Regiment and as if that was not enough, he is hoping to raise £2,000 for the prevention of young suicide after a close friend of his took his own life. He typically completes a 10-mile-a-day hike carrying combat equipment weighing 15kgs and is now on day 12 of a 25-day march hoping to raise as much

money as possible in the process for PAPYRUS which works to prevent young suicides. Speaking about his motivation behind the mission, he said: “Suicide is something I never considered would happen to someone close to me. It has opened my eyes to how much of a problem this is for young adults trying to cope with the pressures of life. “I am doing this to raise awareness and have invited everyone who is based out here to join in and donate. But above all, I’m doing this to help people to understand they are not alone

and raise awareness of the help that PAPYRUS provides.” Ottilie Scanlon, PAPYRUS fundraising officer, said: “This great effort from Brandon and his colleagues will help us to support more young people.” She added that in the UK, suicide is the main cause of death in young people under 35. The charity’s mental health advisors respond to around 1,500 calls, texts and emails every week from young people ‘struggling with life’. A34 closed after rush-hour lorry blaze POLICE shut the A34 to protect the public after a lorry caught fire. Fire crews from Didcot and Berkshire rushed to extinguish the fire near the Milton Interchange just after 7.30am on Wednesday last week. The lorry cab was engulfed in flames, with the blaze

threatening to spread to the full load of the lorry. Station manager Graham Turner said: “Swift action by firefighters prevented further spread to the load of the lorry, which would have created an even larger incident. “Thames Valley Police were forced to close the A34 for a

period of time to ensure the safety of crews and the public, but as soon as the fire had been extinguished every effort was made to clean the road surface of oil and debris to allow at least one lane of the A34 to be re-opened and keep traffic flowing while the lorry awaited recovery.”

To enjoy a break in a busy day of shopping, visitors can sample cuisine from the four corners of the globe. Closest to home, there is Italian fare from Pizza Pilgrims and POLPO. Driver jailed for causing severe injuries to biker

InBrief Four arrested over poaching hares

By Eva Astrienidou A MAN who caused life-changing injuries to a motorcyclist and was found with alcohol levels nearly three times the legal limit has been given a jail term of more than two years. Arunas Kirilka, 46, of Kennington Road, Oxford, was sentenced to two years in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, a four month concurrent sentence for driving while over the alcohol limit and ordered to pay a £140 victim surcharge. He was also disqualified from driving for five years and will have to take an extended driving retest. On July 12 at around 5.50pm, Kirilka was driving his black Volvo S60 on Oxford Road, Banbury, when he undertook another vehicle that was stationary at traffic lights near Horton Hospital. As he pulled away, he lost control of his vehicle and careered into a central island before crashing into the back of a motorbike. The impact caused the motorcyclist to be thrown off and into the back of a stationary vehicle.

Arunas Kirilka was nearly three times over the limit The motorcyclist, a man in his forties, required surgery after sustaining a shattered pelvis and right shoulder and a punctured left lung. Following the collision, Kirilka was breathalysed at the scene, where he recorded 84 microgrammes per 100ml of breath. He was arrested and taken to custody, where his reading went up to 93 microgrammes – the legal limit is 35mg. Following the sentencing at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, PC Neil Bowker, said: “I hope [the] sentencing will help [the victim] start to build a sense of closure on that fateful day.”

Bushy, curly and colourful at beard fest BUSHY, dapper, curly, and even handmade beards all took centre stage over the weekend. The Oxford Beard Festival at the Tap Social Movement in North Hinksey, brought lovers of beards and moustaches together to raise funds for the Oxford food bank. Participants with curious and unique facial hair had a chance to partake in competitions such as big & bushy, dapper as, curliest & straightest moustache,

and choptastic. There was also a ‘less mess’ eating contest, where competitors had to eat the messiest food and stay as clean as they could, with the cleanest man winning the competition. Now in its fourth year, the event on Saturday raised more than £600 to help pay for petrol for the food bank’s four vans and supplement 50,000 meals. To donate go to oxfordfoodbank. org

A 23-year-old man from Old Windsor, a 37-year-old man from Datchet, a 29-year-old man from Old Windsor and a 37-year-old man from Staines were all arrested on suspicion of daytime trespass in pursuit of game and have been released under investigation. The men were arrested after a member of the public reported a suspicious vehicle and men with lurcher-type dogs on land near Pusey estate on October 3 at 8.10am. Four dogs and the vehicle were also seized. Police Constable Robert Maris said: “Rural crime is a priority for the area and we would like to remind the public to be alert to suspicious vehicles and report them directly to us if an offence is suspected to be in progress.”

Eight thousand runners, one dinosaur and lots of cash raised on city roads THE streets of Oxford came alive with the pitter patter of more than 8,000 runners taking part in the city’s seventh half marathon. Sunday’s hugely popular race took runners through some of the most beautiful places in the city of dreaming spires, including the Clarendon Building, Old Marston and the Radcliffe Camera. Joe Morwood was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 1.07.52. The fastest woman was Kim Horner at 1.18.34 and the fastest wheelchair athlete was Gary Cooper with a time of 1.09.24. The 13.1 mile route started in Broad Street and finished in Parks Road. There was entertainment for all with Oxfordshire bands and DJs such as Mama Brass, DJ G, and the Oxford Half Marathon Battle of the Bands winner Samuel Edward, playing to the runners and cheering crowds along the route. One of the 8,357 to take part was our reporter George Welch. He was joined by girlfriend Emma Catton and her dad John as the trio raised funds for Didcot-based

Play2Give founder Andy Baker, reporter George Welch, girlfriend Emma Catton and her dad John moments before they took to the streets fundraising group Play2Give (P2G), which is raising money for Headway Oxfordshire and the Oxford Children’s Hospital. George crossed the line in 1.30.48, while Emma (2.32.24) and John (2.53.23) made it over the line despite picking up injuries. George, 24, said: “I speak to Andy

and publicise all the great things his fundraising group gets up to every week but this was a great opportunity to get out there and do the fundraising myself instead of writing about it. “It was a beautiful course and there was a fantastic atmosphere across the whole event. “Raising money for P2G made the

run extra special and I’m really happy we’ve raised it for founder Andy Baker, who is such an inspiration with all his charity work. “However, I don’t think Emma is best pleased I beat her by a whole hour!” Andy was thankful for their efforts as part of P2G’s 10th anniversary fundraising push. The 29-year-old said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to George, Emma and John for taking on such a gruelling run. They are all running stars. “Thanks as well to George who nominated P2G in the beginning to be the newspaper’s chosen charity.” You can still donate to George, Emma and John’s fundraising page at tinyurl. com/ycj59ma2

On March 1 at 11am, the three men forced entry into a family’s home in Radcot Road, Faringdon. One of the victims returned home with his young child and disturbed the offenders, who then threatened him with a sawn-off shotgun, later found to be one of the shotguns stolen from the burglary in Bampton. They then started a fi re in the victim’s hallway that resulted in the victim and his son sustaining burns, which required hospital treatment. Ingram, of no fi xed abode, had previously admitted two counts of aggravated burglary, one count of

possession of a fi rearm and two separate counts of possessing an altered fi rearm and ammunition without a certificate. At the same court hearing, Checkley, of London Street, Faringdon, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated burglary and one of possession of a fi rearm while committing a schedule 1 offence. Also at the same hearing, Curtis, of Palmer Road, Faringdon, pleaded guilty to one count of burglary, aggravated burglary, and one count of possession of a fi rearm whilst committing a schedule 1 offence.

THREE men have been sent to prison for threatening people in their homes with a machete and a stolen shotgun and starting a fi re in one of the houses. The defendants were sentenced at Oxford Crown Court after a pretrial preparation hearing where they pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and firearm offences on September 22. Nathan Ingram, 19, and Edward Checkley, 37, were both sentenced to eight and a half years’ imprisonment. Gareth Curtis, 35, received a prison sentence of seven and a half years. On February 19 around 10.30pm, the victim, a man in his thirties, was home alone in Station Road, Bampton, when two offenders forced entry to his home demanding ‘the shooters’, which the victim believed referred to his legally-owned shotguns. The offenders stole three shotguns and ammunition while threatening him with a machete. Ingram and Checkley admitted they were the offenders who entered the property while Curtis was the getaway driver.

Lorries destroyed in inferno A RAGING inferno destroyed lorries at a Banbury business last week. Three lorries were scorched following the early morning blaze at Bidvest Logistics in Dorcas Road. Fire crews from Banbury, Hook Norton, Deddington and Brackley were sent to tackle the flames, after being called out at 5.45am on Wednesday last week. Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service released these dramatic images, adding that the fire was ‘rapidly developing’ and there were fears it could spread to nearby vehicles. Firefighters hosed down the flames and prevented further damage. No one was hurt and the fire is not thought to be suspicious.

A fire service spokesperson issued a warning to businesses: “This incident demonstrates the need for businesses to have sound business continuity plans and staff training. “In this incident, the quick response of the company staff to move other closely parked vehicles certainly prevented a greater loss of property.”

MP: We need to reboot party By George Welch AN Oxfordshire MP has warned Theresa May that she will struggle to carry on as Prime Minister in the wake of her mishap-strewn party conference speech. Wantage MP Ed Vaizey said “quite a few” in the party were now “pretty fi rmly” of the view that she should stand down.

The backbencher and former culture minister added that the party conference, which he reportedly didn’t attend, was a missed opportunity to ‘reboot the party’. Critics on the backbenches have so far been reluctant to voice their concerns publicly. However Mr Vaizey, labelled ‘Lazy Vaizey’ by The Spectator magazine, told BBC Oxford last Thursday: “I

think there will be quite a few people who will now be pretty fi rmly of the view that she should resign. “I thought the Tory party conference was a great opportunity to reboot the party and therefore reboot the country and give it a clear sense of direction. “That didn’t happen so yes I am concerned. I’m fi nding it increasingly difficult to see a way forward at the moment, and it worries me.”

The already febrile mood in the party was heightened by Mrs May’s conference address in Manchester when a prankster handed her a P45, part of the scenery fell down, and she was beset by a persistent cough. Under the rules, 48 MPs would need to write to the party’s backbench 1922 Committee expressing no confidence in Mrs May in order to trigger a leadership contest.

Hoping to net more players with 3G pitch

Raymond Blanc was among the chefs entertaining the crowds

By George Welch

Feasting on food festival ORGANISERS of Thame Food Festival have hailed the new location and format of the event a ‘winning formula’. Thousands of people visited Thame Showground and enjoyed a host of demonstrations from chefs including Raymond Blanc from Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. A botanical gin garden, pop-up pub and a pop-up restaurant by The Milkshed at Weston-on-theGreen featured alongside 180 stalls selling artisan food and street food vendors. There was also expert tuition from Bell Kitchens on the broil king barbecue and wine tastings and talks by Belazu. Lotte Duncan, patron and organiser, said: “What an event. We were always conscious about

changing the location and the format, but due principally to safety concerns in the town centre with the volume of people, we just had to do something or there would have been no event at all. “Our move to Thame Showground, meant we could take the opportunity to extend the food festival over two days and the additional space also meant we could add a number of new attractions. “It was so fabulous to see all the hard work of everyone come to fruition.” Visitors to the town centre on the Saturday took part in Thame Food Trail, sampling food delicacies, drinks, and special offers put on for the day by retailers.

OXFORD United stars helped unveil a new state-of-the-art 3G pitch to be enjoyed by hundreds of football fans across the city. The Oxford Academy won a grant of £579,201 from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund and the Football Foundation, to fund the allweather facility. United players Jon Obika and Rob Hall were joined by Riva Casley and Demi Lambourne, members of the women’s team, at the Sandy Lane West-based school to kick off the opening of the facility last week. The school’s new playing surface is expected to boost football participation significantly across all ages, with local football teams and primary schools able to use the new facilities. The pitch will also be a key site for the Oxfordshire Girls Centre of Excellence, run by Oxford United and is also expected to see a rise in participation by as much as four times the current amount.

Overall, it is planned 48 boys’ and 10 girls’ teams are introduced, including eight youth and four adult female sides, as well as four male adult sides. Matthew Brandish, community operations manager for the Oxford Academy, said: “As a facility we have struggled to accommodate local sports clubs for their training and fi xtures. “This new facility will enable us to provide a state-of-the-art facility, along with our current facilities, to local community clubs. “As a school, one of our objectives is to serve the community in the evenings and weekends. This project has allowed us to take a step closer to achieving this.” Andy Earnshaw, business and facility development manager at the Oxfordshire FA, added: “This is a fantastic boost to the game in south east Oxford and will provide much needed training facilities. “With a strong football development plan now in place we are looking forward to seeing the positive impact this will bring.”

Secret plans to rebuild city after war on show By Eva Astreinidou A NEW display in Oxford that reveals ‘an Aladdin’s cave’ of radical plans to rebuild the city after the Second World War will have visitors wondering what if... The Revealing Hidden Oxford display at the Bodleian Libraries will provide an opportunity to see post-war proposals from 1946 which set out to create a radical vision for reshaping the city centre. The proposals included a controversial road across Christ Church Meadow to rid the high street of traffic. Town planning consultant Thomas Sharp’s idea is just one of a collection of around 15,000 plans featured in the city engineer’s strongroom at Oxford Town Hall. Malcolm Graham, curator of the display, said: “The strongroom is a veritable Aladdin’s cave, containing plans which feature everything from 1920s housing estates and wartime air raid shelters to street signs and even designs for a horse-drawn snow plough. “Choosing a single item for this display was something of a challenge. Thomas Sharp’s plan is a reminder that there are many

No wires. No fumes. No fuss.

Plans showing the ‘hidden Oxford’ are on display at the Bodleian Libraries fascinating what if scenarios in the history of Oxford.” The exhibition which runs until November 5 has been made a reality following ‘substantial’ investment by Oxford City Council.

Council leader Bob Price said: “Thomas Sharp’s redevelopment plan provides us with a fascinating insight into the history of Oxford. “It is important that they are accessible to the public.”

InBrief Couple escape after car flipped

A COUPLE made a lucky escape after their car fl ipped over, trapping a male passenger inside. Fire and rescue crews were called to the crash on Friday on the A417 at Stanford in the Vale, near Faringdon, shortly after 3pm.

Emergency responders used specialist rescue tools to force the driver’s door open and remove the male casualty on a spinal board to avoid potential spinal injuries. One adult female casualty was also in the car when it crashed but had managed to free herself from the vehicle with the help of passers-by. The A417 was closed as a result of the incident. Incident commander, crew manager Caroline Tilling said: “The couple were extremely lucky as their vehicle came to rest on a flat stretch of grass verge, short of the tree line and their car did not make contact with any other vehicles on the road, therefore reducing the potential force of the impact.”

Mystery solved over hidden wartime anti-aircraft post By Samantha McGregor THE mystery of a secret military building discovered hidden among ivy and trees at a former Bicester RAF base has been solved. Excavations have revealed a gun mounting point which confi rms the structure was an anti-aircraft gun position with munitions stores ready for an enemy attack. The building was discovered at Bicester Heritage, the former flying field site at RAF Bicester, off Buckingham Road, last year and prompted Historic England to launch an appeal to help identify it. Historic England said it received a “large number of tantalising clues and suggestions” and in March this year further work revealed a gun mounting point. It said the structure, likely to house a light machine gun such as a Stork A.A. twin gun mounting, would have been used to fi re at enemy parachutists should they have landed and tried to take over the airstrip. The team said “unusual weather proof tanking” on the outside of the brickwork would have protected munitions held inside.

The former RAF Bicester, now Bicester Heritage, is the most complete example of an RAF bomber airfield from the interwar expansion period in the UK, and contains numerous protected buildings including bomb stores and defensive structures such as pillboxes, shelters and trenches. So far Historic England has given grants to the tune of £57,000 to help restore buildings at the site. Clare Charlesworth, heritage at risk lead for Historic England in the South East said: “We are really grateful for all the great comments and suggestions sent in from the public, it is really exciting that we have discovered more about what this structure might have been which in turn will help us to restore it. “The RAF Bicester site has an amazing array of historic buildings and structures so we are sure there will be lots more puzzles and secrets still to be revealed.” Daniel Geoghegan, managing director of Bicester Heritage, said: “This particular defensive structure had us scratching our heads for some time and we were

Dumper set on fire

The use of the building at the former flying field site at RAF Bicester has been revealed thanks to help from the public delighted by the response from the public who helped us conclude a modern-day mystery. “The involvement of Historic England is yet another example of a very fruitful partnership here at Bicester Heritage and we look forward to restoring this and the remaining Scheduled Ancient Monuments with their support.”

A DUMPER truck was set on fi re by arsonists on Bicester’s Kingsmere estate on Thursday last week. Bicester fi refighters had to access the site of the blaze by driving on footpaths because vehicles had blocked roads and junctions. The fi re was in the Persimmon Homes area of the site. Thousands jump at chance to try out new trampoline park OXFORDSHIRE’S first indoor trampoline park has opened its doors and is already a big hit with residents. Rebound opened its doors just three weeks ago and has already had more than 4,000 people through them. The £450,000 facility is based at Talisman Business Centre in Bicester and is made up of 12,000 sq ft of trampolines including a dodge ball arena, walk the wall and a virtual reality climbing wall. There is also a battle beam a Wipe-Out style activity with a spinning arm that participants will have to jump to stay in the game. Managing director Matt Tofts said the reaction from people had been “fantastic”. He said: “Since opening we have been extremely busy – we have seen over 4,000 people

through our doors and its getting busier. “I’m relieved, excited, and proud.” He said the only last-minute hitch was the café furniture arriving a few days after the opening day and it was “self-assembly”. The business is expected to create about 45 full and part time jobs as well as up to 20 further seasonal positions. Mr Tofts, a former Finmere School pupil, who now lives near Banbury, said he was looking to introduce special offers for students, fitness classes and sessions for people with learning difficulties. He hopes to attract visitors from across Oxfordshire as well as Bicester Village shoppers – the site is close to the town centre and Bicester Village Train Station.

Fanatical about 1970s chopper By George Welch MOTORBIKE-MAD teenager Colin Woodhams had two posters on his bedroom wall – a still from the countercultural biker movie Easy Rider and a Fantic Chopper. More than 40 years later, the posters may have long gone, but Colin still owns his beloved chopper. To a 16-year-old in the 1970s, the 50cc Fantic was the closest you could get to emulating Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper’s chopper-riding adventure through the American south and Colin couldn’t resist buying one. “I should’ve bought an SS50, but when I saw the Fantic it was a no-brainer, Easy Rider was very cool at 16,” the 59-yearold said. Colin, from Kidlington, bought the bike for £326 in 1974, a hefty premium over its competitors. Initially, Colin’s relationship with the Fantic looked like lasting no longer than the average teenage romance – the pair parted company after about six months, when he still owed about £100 on the fi nance. Two years after selling, fate intervened. Colin, who now runs a construction company, said: “When I was 19 this chap said to me ‘I’ve got your old bike in my garden’. I went to have a look at it and

Colin Woodhams’ Fantic Chopper bought it back off him.” The Fantic then spent more than 30 years living a peripatetic existence: “I put it in my shed, then my dad’s garage. “Then I shared a house with a mate and put it in his loft, and around 1988 he phoned me and said ‘do you want this bike, I’ve just tripped over it in my loft?’ I then put it in my shed where I live now.” Colin’s own son is now 16 and is itching to ride his dad’s pride and joy. “I don’t think I’m going to let him though – if he drops it I think I will be heartbroken.” So why did Colin keep this bike for so many years? “It’s the nostalgia. I passed my test on a moped, which meant I could carry girls on the back. I had the time of my life. “Somebody did offer me £7,500 for it and I turned it down. I’ll keep it forever.”

WOMEN are more likely to be impacted by childhood bullying compared to their male counterparts, a report has suggested. Distance learning provider Oxford Open Learning Trust claims 75 per cent of women who were bullied at school said it knocked their self-confidence in later life, compared to 63 per cent of men. The Impact of Bullying Report 2017 looked at the long-term effects of bullying on adults, discovering who they were bullied by and how often, based on a survey of 2,104 people. The research also suggested that bullying was more likely to impact

women’s ability to make friends (37 per cent v 31 per cent) and their mental health (35 per cent v 27 per cent). Dr Nick Smith, courses director and founder of Oxford Open Learning Trust, said: “The long-lasting impact of bullying can be severe. “We commissioned the research to learn about the landscape of bullying and how this has impacted on day-to-day life for adults. “Not surprisingly, the long-term effects of bullying can be physical and mental, but also have an impact on education too.” The report can be read at tinyurl.com/ y98jpo2o

‘Nobody lacking support’ after centre changes

InBrief New use for school

Number of sites cut from 22 to eight

By Eva Astreinidou

BIG changes to daytime support services have been introduced with a reduction in day centres from 22 to eight. The eight centres will offer 3,200 support sessions per week across the locations, and will ensure that ‘core services are secure for the future’. Oxfordshire County Council said the centres will provide ‘personalised’ support for more than 500 older people or those with learning disabilities. The centres will also have their own vehicles to transport people to and from the centres. The decision for the new system came after a consultation with service users and their families in late 2016, which collected more than 1,000 responses. Some of the points raised were that the new system would be unsustainable and that there would be an “overreliance on volunteers compared with paid, trained staff”. Director for adult social care Kate

Terroni said the council has assessed people according to national care standards and anyone with eligible needs has been offered a place in the eight centres. She added that any others have been offered ‘alternative arrangements’, including places at voluntary sector daytime support services. Penny Thewlis, chief executive of Age UK Oxfordshire, said people need to ‘give the new system time to take shape’. She said: “This has been a big change for some people. We’ve worked very closely with the county council over recent months and with people affected by the change to ensure that nobody is left without daytime support options.” The eight centres are based in Audlett Drive, Abingdon; Neightrop Avenue, Banbury; Launton Road, Bicester; Britwell Road, Didcot; High Street, Wallingford; Charlton Village Road, Wantage; Moorland Road, Witney and Agward Stone Road,Oxford.

From cakes to plastic – it’s all in a day’s work THE Oxford West and Abingdon MP took a break from Westminster to pay a visit to local schools. Layla Moran cut the ribbon for an outdoor covered play area and also showed support behind an innovative recycling project. At St Edmunds School in Abingdon, she met parents and teachers to celebrate the opening of a new outdoor canopy and helped serve cakes for the crowds. At Matthew Arnold, she showed support behind a project that

involves collecting plastics to eventually make a whole bench, after the plastic is mixed with cement. The purpose of the project is to show that everyday plastics can be recycled and reused to make structures.

A FORMER Victorian school has been brought into the 21st century after being transformed into a new home for a tech fi rm. The Old School in Wolvercote has been converted into two offices, covering 3,390 sq ft of accommodation over two floors including laboratory and storage facilities. Digital design consultants Univers Labs has moved from Osney Mead to take up a five-year lease at £55,000 a year.

Flu jabs for carers

OXFORDSHIRE carers have been advised to have a free flu vaccine to protect themselves and the people they look after this winter. The call comes as NHS England launches its national flu campaign. People who receive a carer’s allowance or are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if a carer falls ill are entitled to the free jab. Visit your GP or pharmacy for more information.

Its official. Hearing aids can do more than improve your hearing. Following a survey carried out in 2015 by Anovum ( a market research company) on 1325 hearing impaired people (605 hearing aid wearers and 720 not wearing hearing aids ). The survey reports that hearing aids not only improve capabilities of hearing well but also improved the general health of hearing aid wearers compared to hearing impaired people who do not wear a hearing aid. Hearing aid users are less likely to think they have the symptoms of dementia, feel less physically and mentally exhausted, sleep better and are less likely to suffer from depression. The survey confirms what some Audiologists have suspected for some time, that hearing aids are not only good for correcting hearing loss but in fact contribute to better and more active lives, better quality of life, and better overall health. For the hearing impaired workers who wear a hearing aid it is reported that their hearing aids are useful for their job and that the hearing aids also increase the chance of them getting promoted, being in the right job and getting more salary compared to those hearing impaired people who have not obtained hearing aids. The full report can be found at EuroTrak UK 2015 – ehima A new hearing system is just the beginning and a hearing aid system is only as good as the audiologist prescribing and programming it. At Keith Donaghy Hearingcare we offer the best bespoke hearing aid systems virtually unnoticeable fitting comfortably into your ear. Keith will help you every step of the way whilst you adjust to your new hearing ability, for some this takes months for others a matter of a few weeks but Keith is always on hand to answer questions or give advice on getting the best from your system. The last thing he wants (as is often the case when insufficient aftercare is available) is for your hearing aids to end up in the back of a drawer somewhere, unused because you felt that nothing else could be done to rectify any programming or rehabilitation problems.

Keith wants to know if you have any concerns about your hearing aids, no matter how big or small, so that you and he can work together to achieve the best results.

Displays of support for campaign By Eva Astreinidou A TWO-TIME cancer survivor invited people to ‘paint the town’ pink in a nationwide fight against breast cancer. Businesses in Witney decorated shop fronts with pink balloons and people dressed up in all shades of the colour on Saturday as part of the annual tradition held by Abingdon-based charity Against Breast Cancer. Jeanne Chattoe, who runs Renaissance vintage clothes shop in Wesley Walk, organised the event as part of national breast cancer awareness month in October. The event, now in its 17th year, raised over £4,000 and money is still coming in from shops which organised their own fundraising events. Ms Chattoe said: “The people of Witney are incredibly generous and it’s amazing the trouble the shops go to putting on fabulous window displays.”

Ms Chattoe, who is the chair of trustees for ABC and has been raising money for the charity for more than 25 years, lost her sister to breast cancer and has beat the disease twice herself. She added: “I lost my younger sister at the age of 41. I have had it twice myself and it has also affected other members of my family. “As well as raising as much as I can for a fantastic charity it is also about raising awareness that you can get breast cancer at any age and also that men can get it too. “When my sister was diagnosed she was 31, there was a lot of ignorance about breast cancer and it just wasn’t talked about. “I hope I have done my bit to make people more aware of breast cancer and the help that they can now get.” During the day, shoppers watched performances by belly dancers Hazzaz, Witney Town Band and

Staff from Chapters in their pink pyjamas won best dressed fundraiser Abingdon Choir and enjoyed a ‘clubbercise’ session which Mayor Chris Woodward joined in. The main event of the day was the announcement of the town’s best dressed fundraiser and best decorated

shop window. Hairdressers Chapters sported pink spotted pyjamas for the day, while Shake Shop employees came up with a menu with a twist. The Mayor awarded the winners their prizes.

Uni scientists awarded funding for their innovative projects TWO ‘promising’ Oxford University scientists have each been awarded £80,000 to bring their innovative projects to market. Fourteen young engineers and scientists have been recognised nationally by The Royal Commission for Exhibition of 1851, which grants fellowships supporting technological advancements that could impact on

business and society. This year, Oxford University PhD students Chao Jiang and David Dearlove were recognised for their ambitious work. Mr Jiang, who will carry out his project with the support of technological company UCB Celltech, was one of the worthy recipients for his project that aims to treat osteoporosis by

reactivating stem cells in ageing bones. Mr Dearlove, will work alongside TdeltaS to aid his research into how a new food group can improve metabolic health. Each fellow receives up to £80,000 worth of funding over three years for their work, which they will carry out in collaboration with an academic institution and a business partner.

Bernard Taylor, chairman of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, said: “This year, we have awarded more Fellowships than ever before, and the breadth of technologies we are supporting, from artificial intelligence, to clean power and potential cures for most deadly diseases demonstrates that the talent in the UK is only growing.”

InBrief Roy off the bench

AFTER 16 years warming the subs’ bench, Roy of the Rovers is taking to the pitch once again. The adventures of comic hero Roy Race, a star striker for the fictional Melchester Rovers, fi rst saw print in the 1950s. The character’s weekly comic ended in 1995, continuing in Match of the Day magazine until he hung up his boots in 2001. He has not been seen since. Oxford-based publisher Rebellion, which bought the rights to the character last year, will publish a series of novels and books to kick off the 2018/19 football season. While most fans will remember Roy’s 1970s golden-haired bob, his new style is yet to be revealed, although he will have a modern look.

Cornbury’s back!

CORNBURY Music Festival will return for its 15th edition next year – despite previously announcing that 2017’s event would be the last. Barely three months after an emotional farewell, its director Hugh Phillimore said the popular festival will be back for more of the same at Great Tew, near Chipping Norton next July. Mr Phillimore has revealed that a ‘wave of support’ convinced him to bow to pressure from well-wishers. ‘Poshstock’ will return from July 13 to 15.

Whip up pub treats at home EVER enjoyed a meal and thought you’d like to have a go at recreating it at home? Thanks to a new cookery book, the first by an Oxfordshire chef, you can do just that. Whipped & Charred by Thomas Curtis of The White Hart at Minster Lovell features 80 recipes celebrating all that is classic and homely and reflect Thomas’s family roots and passion for good food. Thomas said: “I have lovingly put this book together as a tribute to my late father, Ian Curtis, who sadly passed away at Christmas in 2014. It is full of rich, homely content and a few memories and insights into my personal life and time working as a chef.” From pub classics such as Beef Wellington and steak and onion pie to more intricate dishes such as blue cheese bon bons and Earl Grey panna cotta, Thomas believes he has covered pretty much all bases. The book, launched last week, has a nostalgic feel and will rekindle the love and comfort of traditional homemade British food. Thomas added: “The kind of food that I’m interested in creating has always been hearty, classic. There’s something about home comforts that makes me happy.” As well as Thomas’s book, The White Hart has another unusual

attraction - its ‘produce for a pint scheme’. Customers can trade in their home-grown fruit and veg for a cold beer. He said: “The community is at the heart of this place and we couldn’t do it without local trade from Minster Lovell and Witney.” Giving something back is a key theme for Thomas as he is raising funds for two charities close to his heart - the British Heart Foundation and MIND. The aim is to raise £1,000 for each cause with 10% from the book sales going to them. He added: “The BHF is a charity which deals with one of the UK’s biggest killers - heart disease and MIND a charity for better mental health. Without MIND; thousands of people would be left in limbo, alone and lost, and especially after losing a family member; they can become a great source of comfort.” To ensure your money goes to a good cause buy a copy of Whipped & Charred from Thomas at The White Hart for £20. Also available from Waterstones, Amazon and from mezepublishing. co.uk

On stage Alison displays her ‘Other’ side on tour SINGER songwriter Alison Moyet will appear at the New Theatre next month as part of an international tour. Alison takes to the stage on November 7, after shows across Canada, America and Australia with special guest Hannah Peel. Presenting her new album Other, released earlier this summer on independent record label Cooking Vinyl. ‘Other’ came about after Alison’s partnership with producer and song writing collaborator Guy Sigsworth, who as well as having worked with Björk, Goldie and Madonna, co-created her last album The Minutes, which debuted at number five in the national charts. Of the album, Moyet, now in her 50s, said: “Subject matter covers what you might expect from a pop album. Dyslexia, locked-out syndrome, diversity, Persephone, doggedness and the Internet. For me, making a record at this age, lyrically, is a different proposition. “Observation in most cases replaces emotion. The invisibility of middle-aged woman rather thrills me and instead I watch.” Moyet exploded onto the pop scene in the 1980s as one half of the band Yazoo with Vince Clark before working as a solo performer with hit songs including Invisible, Love Resurrection and All Cried Out. Tears and laughter in teens’ tale By Samantha McGregor RITA Sue and Bob Too a startling and insightful portrait of teenage girls in the early years of Thatcher’s Britain comes to the Oxford stage this month. Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play is at the Oxford Playhouse from October 24 to 28. Written for the Royal Court Theatre in 1982 when she was just 19, this is a vivid portrait of two girls caught between a brutal childhood and an unpromising future, both hungry for adult adventure. Teen babysitters Rita and Sue embark on an affair with their employer Bob who lives with his family in a modern house on the wealthy side of town. When his marriage falls apart he wonders if he is taking advantage of the girls and their troubled lives. With wicked humour and a great ear for dialogue, Rita, Sue and Bob Too was inspired by Dunbar’s own life on Bradford’s Buttershaw estate. It was adapted into a very popular film directed by Alan Clark, which was restored and re-released this year by the BFI. Rita is played by Taj Atwal who has appeared in Stella on Sky and in Kay Mellors’ In The Club on BBC1. Atwal’s co-star from In The Club, Gemma Dobson, will make her professional stage debut as Sue.

Enjoy look of love with son of a preacher man

On stage

A five-star evening

By Samantha McGregor A NEW musical featuring the sounds of Dusty Springfield and starring X Factor finalist Diana Vickers and Bad Girls and Coronation Street star Debra Stephenson comes to Oxford. Starring alongside Diana as Kat and Debra who plays Alison in Son of a Preacher Man is EastEnders and Coronation Street actor Ian Reddington, best known for playing Tricky Dicky in EastEnders and Vernon in Coronation Street. Son of a Preacher Man is directed and choreographed by Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood. Welcome to the Preacher Man, the swinging 1960s Soho joint where the kids dance the night away to the latest crazes and dared to dream of love, while the legendary owner, The Preacher Man himself, dispensed advice to cure the loneliest of hearts. But that was a long time ago and only memories and myths are left. Until now - when three random strangers who are generations apart but all in need of help with their hopeless love lives come together. The Preacher Man is long gone, but his son, with help from the wonderful Cappuccino Sisters, might

just find it in himself to channel the spirit of The Preacher Man and once more give these three lovesick strangers the look of love. Featuring the greatest hits of Dusty Springfield, including The Look Of Love, I Only Want To Be With You, Spooky and the classic Son Of A Preacher Man, you’re sure to be singing along. Diana Vickers was a semi-finalist on the X Factor and made her professional acting debut in the title role of

DIDCOT double bass player Nigel Emerton brings ‘feel good’ music to Cornerstone Theatre. The show takes place on Thursday, October 26, following a nationwide tour of his new show Swing Time. As part of their national Poppy Appeal tour, which started at London’s Leicester Square Theatre, the show features the band Five Star Swing and promises an evening of classic songs from Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller and many more. As seen on BBC television’s Children in Need and Dame Vera Lynn’s Charity Ball, the show is led by bandleader Chris Smith Jr, a composer and arranger for the BBC Radio Big Band and a former

composer for Herb Miller Big Band – Glenn Miller’s brother. Along with Tony Bennett’s trombonist, is vocalist and saxophonist Simone, who was taught to play alto saxophone in the 1980’s by the famous bandleader Ivy Benson. Simone has recorded with Paul Weller, for the Paul Merton TV Show and the Russell Harty show. Nigel said: “Fans have enjoyed this ‘feel good’ style of music for generations - following our extensive UK tour I’m excited to be bringing the sound of our big band brass, saxes, rhythm and vocalists back home.” Tickets cost from £15, for more information call 01235 515144 or go to cornerstone-arts.org

Get ready for t’s been ten years since I regularly graced TV screens helping transform people’s living spaces with MDF and stripped floorboards. Recently it’s been more “celebrity muck out” than “celebrity make-over” as I took up the challenge of owning my own Wildlife Zoo in Tenby. In this time I’ve learnt quiet a lot about fences and having researched the various options for my own benefit I thought I would share my knowledge with a wider audience. The latest design processes

mean there is now a tremendous array of fencing products for you to choose from, constructed from a variety of materials. Each has its own attributes, and ultimately it can often come down to a matter of personal preference. For me, there was one unique system that stood out as providing the best balance between price and functionality which eradicates fencing problems for good. Or for at least 25 years. Colourfence. For quality, value, longevity, aesthetic design, this fencing system ticks all the boxes. Fencing made for

the 21st century that will transform the look of your garden which is supplied and fitted by a company whose customer service is as good as the product. In my view, Colourfence is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of fencing – just without the exclusive price tag. What’s more, it’s guaranteed to stay in place in up to 130mph winds and is virtually maintenance free. To find out how the experts from Colourfence might help you, I suggest you call 01865 582 171 and speak to their team.

Head into Autumn - with The only garden fence you will ever need! Every gardener knows that it pays to plan ahead. If you are one of the thousands of people who watched helpless, as winter winds battered their garden, it will not be a surprise that garden fences are almost always the first casualty. Whether you have previously patched, painted or simply prayed to keep your fence going, there’s no escaping the fact that timber fences will always fall victim to the weather. With Colourfence you can put your garden straight once and for all. Colourfence is scientfically tested and cyclonically rated to ensure when professionally installed, it can withstand wind gusts of up to

130mph. Once it’s up – it stays up and is guaranteed to look good year after year. Safe, extra secure and hassle free – you will NEVER need to paint it, treat it or patch it. An occasional hose down will be all you need do to keep it in top condition for years to come. In fact the system is so durable that Colourfence will guarantee† their fencing to last at least 25 years. Available in a range of colours to suit any garden, with or without decorative trellis, the highly skilled installation team make short work of their dramatic transformations. Your sad old fence will be e_ ciently cleared and replaced, leaving you to get

back to enjoying your rejuvenated garden. Pricing is just as straightforward and equally attractive. Starting costs are in line with inferior timber systems but with no annual treatments required, Colourfence saves you time and money each and every year. Their aim is your peace of mind. With a 25 year guarantee† Colourfence speaks for itself and promises a lifetime of hasslefree enjoyment. Home Owners aged 50+

Protect your home from future care home fees Does this sound familiar?

“We have made our Wills, leaving everything to each other and then to the children.” These are known as Mirror Wills. Sounds reassuring enough, doesn’t it? But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all.

“We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives. Why should the Local Authority get it all?”

If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home to your surviving partner but instead leave them the use of your share. This can be achieved by making new Property Trust Wills. These legitimate steps must be taken while you are both alive and in reasonable good mental health. It is therefore important for couples to act now!

Most of our clients come to us having already made standard Mirror Wills or have been meaning to make a Will but simply haven’t got around to it. With Property Trust Wills, yourself and your spouse/partner each leave your half share of the home to the children in Trust but state that they are not to receive it during the lifetime of the surviving spouse/partner. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations for care fees. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done previously.

Subaru WRX STi 2.5i Manual

‘Warp drive – but not as we know it’ By Tony Yates I’m afraid this week I have been transformed into a ‘yobbo’ because I currently have the wonderful Subaru WRX STi on review. Yes, it may look like it’s had a few additional extras fitted at your local Halfords store, but be aware - this WRX is not to be messed with in any shape or form. So, forget Star Trek - the WRX also has its very own ‘warp drive’.

Power & efficiency Powered by a 2.5 litre horizontally opposed ‘flat four’ boxer engine with the added bonus of a twin-scroll turbocharger which sounds like it’s going to spin the world all on its own. Engine figures - well, straight out the box figures for the WRX are 407Nm of torque along with 300PS of Subaru power, plus a 0-62 time of around 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 159mph (roads permitting). The WRX also gets a Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System that is frankly staggering - and if that’s not enough,

you also get a driver controlled centre differential coupled to a viscous LSD which basically means it will grip like there’s no tomorrow. Fuel economy, in case you’re interested, is around the 20mpg, which is quite thirsty - but I actually don’t care. Plus you don’t buy a WRX to then complain about how much it costs to fill the petrol tank.

On the road The WRX feels fantastic, no matter what mode you decide to ‘play’ with. If you really do feel the need to give it a good shakedown - then I suggest you head for the racetrack where it will easily keep you entertained for possibly the rest of time. This WRX also stops as well as it goes - thanks to its massive Brembo brakes and 432mm ventilated front & rear discs - which delivers a powerful and progressive feel while dissipating heat for confident, fade-free braking. To be honest, after about twenty minutes I decided to pull over to re-attach some of my internals which had fallen out.

Design & technology Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, the WRX comes with the normal ‘yobbo’ styling inside and out – plus the addition of flared arches, bonnet bulge and a boot spoiler that would not look out of place on the rear end of a 747. Of course, it does serve a purpose in keeping you firmly nailed to the earth at pretty much any speed you care to try - but be aware, she will ‘bite’. As I said earlier – it has an all-wheel-

drive system on hand to help keep all those grip levels to a maximum, while giving the WRX a serious amount of precise cornering abilities, no matter what the road surface is doing beneath you. Then there’s that 6-speed manual transmission, which feels nice and tight between gear changes giving you the confidence to push harder. Inside it’s like a normal car, but with additional gauges and displays added all pointing to its ability to do everything at ‘warp speed’. The seats are also very

To sum up Subaru has once again created a remarkable piece of engineering. I have to say, hats off to the WRX engineers for re-lighting my fire. I for one will be looking to buy such a beast in the very near future as long as I can find my baseball cap and trainers. Price: £31,995 (WRX STi 2.5i Manual)

good at making you feel snug and safe. To be honest the WRX is a nice place to sit, thanks to Subaru getting everything just right for the driver and all who sail in her. Some of the standard equipment includes; LED front & rear lighting, 7 airbags, aluminium pedals, stainless steel sill plates, six-way manually-adjustable driver’s seat electric windows, keyless access, push-button start, dual-zone automatic air conditioning system, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, auxiliary input jack, Six-speaker audio system, CD player, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and that unmistakable four-cylinder ‘Boxer burble’.

Palmer’s farewell to tough season By Adam Flinn

F1 - Renault JOLYON Palmer bid farewell to Renault and possibly to Formula One with a 12th-place fi nish in the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday. The Enstone-based team announced over the weekend that Suzuka would be Palmer’s last with them after almost two seasons. Carlos Sainz, who Renault had already signed for 2018, will join Nico Hulkenberg at the team from the next race in the United States. Palmer started towards the back in Japan because of grid penalties, but put in a solid performance to move up through the field and fi nish close behind Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso’s battle for the fi nal point. His departure comes after only managing one points-scoring result this season, a sixth-place fi nish in Singapore last month. Palmer said: “We had a solid last race. We started from the back and with one more lap, I think we could have had 10th. “It’s been a tough season but the team and I have been through a lot, I’ve been here since the start of this new era for the team. “We’ve come a long way and I’ve enjoyed it, and I wish the team all the

best in the future.” Hulkenberg had been in with a chance of a decent haul of points before an unusual failure ended his race early. The DRS mechanism on his rear wing became stuck fully open on lap 41, meaning Hulkenberg had very little downforce in the corners. He came into the pits for repairs,

but the problem proved terminal and he had to retire. Hulkenberg had been running right behind the two Haas cars when the failure struck and was on much fresher tyres, meaning eighth place at least was on the table. He said: “That was frustrating as a good points haul was possible. “A small metal component broke on

the DRS mechanism which left it stuck open, so we’ll look at why it broke as we missed a good opportunity. “I’m sure we can fight back, the car was pretty decent in the race and there’s plenty more to come from us in the fi nal four grand prix.” The next race is the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas on October 22.

One point well-earned for Massa as Stroll forced out F1 - Williams FELIPE Massa held off the challenge of Fernando Alonso to claim the fi nal point at Suzuka in Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. The Williams driver fi nished 10th

in a tough afternoon for the Grovebased team, which saw the veteran racer hampered in the latter part of the race with damage to his car. Massa had been running eighth but lost places to the two Haas cars towards the end, and then had to fight to keep Alonso behind in the fi nal laps.

Meanwhile, Lance Stroll recorded his fi rst retirement for 13 races when a dramatic puncture on lap 45 ended his race early. He had already had to pit early in the race for a suspected puncture, and was running in 14th at the time of his terminal failure.

Williams’ chief technical officer Paddy Lowe said: “It was a tough race for both drivers. “Even though it was only one point, it feels like one of the more difficult points we’ve scored, so well done to the team, and to Felipe and Lance, for all they’ve done this weekend.”

Double joy for Haas as drivers rack up eighth and ninth F1 - Haas FOR only the second time in their history, Haas F1 managed to get both their cars into the points to bring home six points from Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. Kevin Magnussen fi nished eighth to record his fi rst points for the Banburybased team since Azerbaijan, while Romain Grosjean followed him home in ninth. The results mean Haas have jumped back ahead of Renault in the constructors’ championship standings to seventh with four races remaining. Magnussen was particularly impressive during the race, forcing

Victory after friend’s lastminute dash for golf clubs

his way past Felipe Massa’s Williams in the closing stages to move up the order. He said: “I enjoyed my race. We maximised our potential as a team by getting eighth and ninth and scoring points. “Results like this are defi nitely not easy to get, so hopefully I can keep this going and score more points over the last bit of the season.” Grosjean shadowed his team-mate for pretty much all of the race, and took advantage of Magnussen’s move on Massa to sneak past the Brazilian as well. He said: “It’s our second double score for the team, so that’s pretty awesome. I knew on Saturday I had some great pace in the car. I couldn’t

show it as I was always behind Kevin all race long, but I had much more pace in the car.”

Frilford Heath chairman Alistair Booth, left, with lucky winner Peter Tarver-Jones THE winner of a European Tour qualifying tournament hosted at Frilford Heath nearly missed out on progressing to the next stage – after leaving his clubs at home. Peter Tarver-Jones, a previous Europro Tour winner, topped the leaderboard after a rather stressful start to the fi nal day. The 29-year old from Worthing Golf Club left his clubs at home, over 90 minutes away. Thankfully a friend saved the day and hand-delivered them to him, just moments before his fi rst round. The disruptive start didn’t put Tarver-Jones off as he ended the tournament nine-under par, closely followed by Welsh golfer Mark Laskey who completed the tournament on eight-under par. Frilford Heath hosted the four-day leg of the European Tour Qualifying School earlier this month, in which 104 hopefuls battled it out on for a chance to play in next year’s European Tour. A total of 20 players qualified for the second stage and will go on to battle it out again in Spain next month before the fi nal. Daniel Blesovsky, Frilford Heath golf manager, said: “It all came good in the end for Peter, thankfully! It was a pretty tense morning to say the least. “We wish all the fi nalists of the Qualifying School the best of luck for the next stage in Spain. Let’s hope they all remember to take their clubs with them!”

Birdies help Eddie to secure impressive final round in Scotland Golf EDDIE Pepperell fired an outstanding final round of 65 to finish tied seventh in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The Abingdon man began the final day on six-under par and shot eight

birdies and a bogey to finish sevenunder par for the day and 13-under for the tournament. The 26-year-old’s fi nest moment came when he carded four consecutive birdies from the fi fth hole. A bogey followed on the 11th but Pepperell responded with a three-

birdie blitz on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes of the St Andrews course. It was a strong fi nish that lifted the world 184 to 49th in the Race to Dubai. Pepperell began the tournament on Thursday in steady fashion by finishing the first round at Carnoustie on level par. But he steadily improved on the

Kingsbarns and St Andrews courses to register rounds of 69 on days two and three. The Frilford Heath member fi nished on a 13-under par total of 275, placing him in a five-way tie for seventh and 11 shots behind the winner. His prize-money of €93,955 should

guarantee him a spot at the end-ofseason Dubai World Championship. Tyrrell Hatton became the first man to retain the championship title after clinching the title by three shots with a six-under par final round. Pepperell tees off at the Italian Open in Milan today (Thursday).

Guilty of making same mistakes By George Welch

Picture: Michael Allen

Oxford City MARK Jones has issued a stark warning to his players after his Oxford City side slipped into the bottom three following a 3-2 home defeat to fellow strugglers Poole Town. The City boss has demanded more from his players otherwise the club will only go one way – and that’s down. Jones’ side are now winless in nine league matches and Saturday’s defeat at Court Place Farm meant their visitors leapfrogged them in the National League South table and pushed the Hoops into the relegation zone. Oxford dominated possession but, once again, they failed to convert their authority into goals as they conceded at least two goals for the eighth time in their last nine league games.

Joe Oastler challenges for the ball to put Matt Paterson through on goal Jones said: “We’ve [the management] got to work very hard to put it right but we need more from some of the lads.

“We look at ourselves but I need players to be doing better for me than they are. “I don’t think they’re bad lads or

anything like that but to win a game of football sometimes you have to be prepared to put your neck on the line and maybe we’re too nice.” Matt Paterson reacted fastest to hook home a loose ball and put the home side ahead on 20 minutes. Warren Bentley equalised for Poole just before half time before putting the Dolphins ahead with a simple fi nish on 68 minutes. Jez Bedford fi red home 10 minutes later to put the game to bed when City were caught on the break piling bodies forward. Admitting it was “a really, really bad result for us”, Jones added: “It was a game that we needed to win. It was a great opportunity for us to do that but we haven’t done the job. “We don’t seem to be learning, we seem to be guilty of repeating the same mistakes over again.” City host Bognor Regis Town in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

More steel but still work to do as Puritans lose again Real game of Banbury United A SUPERB 20-yard strike condemned Banbury United to their third consecutive league defeat, despite an improved showing against highflyers Hereford on Tuesday. The Puritans, who set the pace in the opening weeks of the Southern Premier League, have slipped to midtable following Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Basingstoke Town and Tuesday’s 1-0 loss at home to the Bulls. Hereford’s winner came when Keyon Reffell showed fantastic control to fi re an unstoppable effort from just outside the area into the far bottom corner of the net. Boss Mike Ford said his Banbury side showed ‘more steel’ compared to previous matches but, despite

improving in the second half, Hereford remained resolute to secure the win. The defeat followed a shakier defensive display at Basingstoke at the weekend. New Dragons singing Sam Argent scored twice on his second debut for the club, his fi rst of the afternoon giving the hosts an early lead on five minutes. The Puritans grabbed an equaliser right on half time as Jack Harding kicked a long ball out to Tom Winters, who produced a stunning shot from 25 yards out to beat Basingstoke custodian Colm McAdden. Basingstoke got themselves back in front with a quarter of an hour to go thanks to a tap-in from substitute Ashleigh Artwell. Argent completed his impressive return in stoppage time as he slotted

two halves as Kiddy notch up a 3-1 win FA Trophy

home Sam Smart’s cross. United have the weekend off but travel to Gosport Borough, who have one point, on Tuesday.

Freds notch up ninth victory after beating high-flyers Hellenic round up IN-FORM Wantage Town extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games as they took three vital points from fellow high-flyers Bracknell Town on Saturday. The Freds, who have only dropped four points in nine league matches since mid-August, edged a close game 3-2 at Alfredian Park.

Leading through a Jim Glover goal on 24 minutes, Wantage were struck with a double blow when Bracknell scored either side of half time to take a 2-1 lead. Wantage levelled on 56 minutes through Nick Thorne before Steve Robertson’s winner eight minutes later. The win meant Town closed in on fourth-placed Bracknell before they meet again for a rematch on Tuesday. Teams around Wantage keep

winning however, meaning the south Oxfordshire side remain fi fth in the table, four points behind secondplaced Flackwell Heath. They are eight points off tabletoppers Highworth Town who occupy the only automatic promotion spot with a 100 per cent record after 12 matches. It was a tougher afternoon for struggling Oxford City Nomads as they slipped to their third successive defeat, the latest a 2-0 loss at

Brimscombe & Thrupp on Saturday. A goal in each half from Lee Bowles and Ash Caldwell did the damage for the Gloucestershire side. Sixteenth-placed Nomads host midtable Longlevens in a rearranged fi xture on Friday. Wantage, who sit fi fth but eight points off leaders Highworth Town, entertain Burnham on Saturday before travelling to Bracknell on Tuesday.

Eagles soar as every player scores in impressive wins Basketball IT was an excellent day on the courts for Abingdon Eagles Basketball Club as both the U14 and U16 National League teams enjoyed that winning feeling on Saturday. The U14s stormed to an 81-37 win away at Shropshire Warriors in their fi rst outing in the National League. They top the Midlands West division

after one game. And in a local derby, the U16s smashed Oxford Hoops off the court with a stunning 122-47 win in the East II division. In both games every one of the boys was on the scoresheet. The U14s host Worcester Bears while the U16s, who have won two and lost two of their games so far this season, entertain Milton Keynes Trojans on Saturday.

Abingdon Eagles Basketball Club U14s won 81-37 with coach Steve Claringbould

KIDLINGTON put in a convincing second half display to beat Winchester City 3-1 in their Buildbase FA Trophy preliminary round tie at Yarnton Road on Saturday. Lewis Coyle got the hosts off the mark on 54 minutes as fans were treated to an entertaining second half following a goalless first period. Winchester equalised following a goalmouth scramble, with Josh Harfield claiming the last touch, but Lance Williams restored Kiddy’s lead when he powered home on 77 minutes. And, after the visitors were reduced to 10 men, Browne got on the score sheet himself to see off their fellow Evo-Stik South West opponents. Thame United will join the Greens in the first qualifying round after winning their first game in the competition for 12 years. United progressed to the next round following a hard-fought 1-0 win at Mangotsfield. Dan West forced home the winner from a drilled Lynton Goss corner, to the elation of the visiting fans. However, Didcot Town and North Leigh crashed out of the FA Trophy following defeats to Shortwood United and Wimborne Town respectively. George Seacole gave Leigh a fifth minute lead but the west Oxfordshire side were undone by two first half goals and a second half strike. Didcot went down 1-0 away to Shortwood, the only goal coming from Jack Freeman in the third minute. Thame United will host Wimborne Town and Kidlington will entertain Slough in the first qualifying round. Matches will be played on October 28.

Ricardinho dedicates first goal to pregnant wife and to the fans By George Welch MARAUDING full back Ricardinho failed to hide his delight at scoring his fi rst Oxford United goal in Saturday’s 3-0 thumping of AFC Wimbledon. The Brazilian netted United’s second just after half-time, popping up unnoticed in the area following a typical rampaging run forward to fi re a James Henry cross low and hard into the bottom corner. And the 33-year-old, who signed from Azerbaijani side FK Qabala over the summer, was delighted to open his account in front of the U’s fans. He said: “I am so happy to score because I don’t do that very often. “I saw [the] Wimbledon [defence] start to [move to] the right hand side and open a gap for me. “Everyone was watching the ball and forgot about me. I didn’t expect the ball to come but I just tried to be more compact and see if the ball came to me. “When it did I was unmarked and decided to shoot and it was great to see the ball go in.” He added: “I’m also happy because I can give the goal to my wife because she is pregnant, and to the fans who support me. “I want to thank the fans and the players because they have helped me a lot.” Ricardinho’s last goal came from the penalty spot for FK Qabala in a Europa League tie against Anderlecht nearly a year ago.

Women earn well-deserved draw with last-minute kick A FANTASTIC last minute Kayleigh Hines free kick earned Oxford United Women a deserved draw against Doncaster Rovers Belles. United trailed their visitors twice but clung on to their unbeaten start to the WSL2 campaign with the 2-2 draw at Court Place Farm on Sunday. The fi rst half offered little in terms of clear-cut chances, with both defences making crucial interceptions to stop any attacking threat. Emily Allen was nearly played through twice for United, only to be denied by impeccably timed last-ditch tackles. It was fi rst blood to the away side on 22 minutes when a fantastic Christie Murray volley from the edge of the box rippled in the back of the Oxford net. Chloe Chivers and Hannah Short had chances just after the half-hour mark but United had to wait until midway through the second to level. The equaliser came on 54 minutes when Chivers found the bottom corner with a low and hard effort to

open her account for the season. Rovers looked to have grabbed the winner seven minutes from time when Murray tapped into an open net following good work by Rebecca Raynor. But United snatched a point from the jaws of defeat when Hines, pictured, stepped up to take a 93rd minute free kick on the edge of the box. The midfielder fi red a sensational strike perfectly into the top corner to make it 2-2 and send Andy Cook’s side second in the table. Oxford stopper Demi Lambourne stayed alert to consolidate the point with a brilliant one-on-one save with the last kick of the game.

Picture: Steve Daniels Yet the smiley South American said the team’s win was more important than his fi rst goal for the club. He said: “We spoke after the Peterborough game and said that as a team we cannot go up and down. “Pep [Clotet, the Oxford manager]

told us before the game that we had to stay at that good level, and even if we don’t play well then we have to fight and play as a team and be smart. “We needed to win, that was the most important thing, and that’s the same for the next game now.”

Carroll sees red as under-19s march on A SENDING off for Republic of Ireland youngster Canice Carroll in the opening game of the European Under-19 Championship qualifiers failed to stop the Irishmen’s march to the fi nals. The Oxford United right back received his marching orders after picking up two yellow cards to reduce Ireland, who hosted the qualification group, to 10 men in a 0-0 draw with Azerbaijan last Wednesday. The 18-year-old collected the fi rst card on 74 minutes and headed for an early bath 10 minutes later when the referee booked him again. Cyprus were swept aside 5-0 in Waterford on Saturday while Carroll, who has made five appearances for the U’s so far this season, sat out his suspension. A fi rst half hat-trick from Jayson Molumby and a Jonathan Afolabi brace made sure Ireland were in with a shout of qualifying from Group 7 heading into the fi nal group game on Tuesday. Carroll returned to the starting line-up and played the full 90 minutes at centre half as Ireland topped the group with a 2-1 win over Serbia. The top two teams from the 13 qualifying groups progress to the

HEAD scout Craig Dean has left Oxford United to join Championship side Leeds United. United’s recruitment team, led by Mark Thomas, will be restructured as a result. Dean, who previously had a role in the Football Association’s development department, joined the U’s in 2014 and has played a key role in strengthening the Oxford squad in a successful three-yearspell. He said: “I have really enjoyed

my time with Oxford. “There have been some fantastic moments including promotion and cup wins and there are a lot of great people behind the scenes who work very hard and who I am sure I will stay friends with. “The chance to join Leeds is a very exciting new challenge for me, one I’m looking forward to, but I wish Oxford every success.” Oxford United said they thanked Dean for his efforts and wish him well for the future.

Fantastic performance U’s put three past Dons to secure back-to-back victories By George Welch

A STUNNING one-handed save from Simon Eastwood was the turning point in Oxford United’s 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, according to U’s boss Pep Clotet. Wes Thomas netted in back-to-back league games for the second time this season and fi rst league goals from Ricardinho and Xemi secured United’s third 3-0 home win of the season. But with the home side a goal up, Oxford stopper Eastwood pulled off a spectacular save to keep Cody McDonald out shortly after the break. The resulting corner was cleared and moments later United doubled their lead when Ricardinho fi nished off a ruthless counter attack. It was a pivotal moment in the match, and one the visitors failed to respond to. Clotet said: “You can never defend everything and you always rely on the ability of the goalkeeper to defend the box and Easty did fantastic. “The save helped us to start a counter attack, it was brilliantly executed and we’ve fi nished with a goal at the other end. “That sets the game, especially because the goal is that early in the second half.” Thomas scored his fi fth goal of the season – as many as he scored last campaign – with a fi ne individual strike on 12 minutes, as United cel-

Clotet was delighted to pick up back-to-back wins and build on the remarkable 4-1 demolition of Peterborough United following a three game winless streak last month. He said: “Overall it was a fantastic performance. We managed to have lots of shots, dominated possession and defended very well. “There’s still a of things to improve but coming from where we were [three successive defeats] the team has to take massive credit for that [the improvement]. “We are becoming a solid team but there’s plenty of room to improve. I’m happy at the minute because we’ve put in back-to-back victories.” Oxford, up to 10th in the League
