Housing Crisis Summit will be of ‘no value’, say Labour

WE HAVE MOVED BEYOND TALKING ABOUT IT CALLS for a Housing Crisis Summit have been blocked amid worrying affordability statistics for homes in the city. A Lloyds Bank survey has revealed Oxford’s average house prices are now over 11 times the gross average earnings in the city. The survey, released at the end of last week, revealed the average house price in Oxford is £340,864, maintaining its place as the least affordable city in the UK. City Council leader Bob Price (pictured) says the price of housing in Oxford “reflects the excess of demand over supply of housing”. He added: “There is nothing that

the council can do to affect that market outcome other than try to identify sites for new housing and get developers to build.” In response to the survey, Green councillor Sam Hollick, Holywell ward member, proposed a motion to council on Monday for an Oxford Housing Crisis Summit. But, the motion was amended by Labour councillor Scott Seamons, board member for Housing, who asked council to support the urban expansion of the city • Continued on page 3

His cousin Zeeshan Ahmed, 28, formerly of Palmer Road, Wood Farm, Oxford, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for perverting the course of justice. A third man, Mustafa Ahmed, 26, of Harrow Road, London, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault on May 30 and was jailed for 18 months last Friday. cathedral during the morning. The service featured a performance from Ballet Rambert, followed by a panel discussion at St Mary the Virgin Church on High Street, which pointed out the next Bishop of Oxford could be a woman. Revd Liz Johnson, who was one

of the first woman to be ordained in the country, attended Saturday’s event. She said: “The highlight of the day was the inspiring preaching by Rose Hudson Wilkin. “I’ve also been moved by how much support we have from both men and women.”

Director of Ordinands at the Diocese of Oxford, Revd Dr Amanda Bloor, added: “I feel the day has gone brilliantly. “It’s good to see a range of people looking back and remembering, but also looking forward to what will happen in the future.” • (Below) Celebrations of 20 years of women priests at Christ Church Cathedral

HEADINGTON: A woman in her 80s had her wallet stolen from her house in a distraction burglary last Friday. At around 10am, the victim answered her door to a man, who said he was her next door neighbour’s gardener and asked for a pen and paper to leave a message. After he left, the woman noticed her wallet was missing, which contained cash and various cards. Anyone with information is asked to call 101.

Prom aims to inspire children OXFORD: This year’s Patsy Wood Family Prom returns to the Jacqueline Du Pré Music Building, on Iffley Road, this Sunday. Celebrating a greener way of living OXFORDSHIRE is marking Recycle Week with a number of environmentally friendly events taking place across the county from Saturday. It is an annual celebration promoted by the county council and Oxfordshire’s five district councils to commend the recycling efforts from the area. David Nimmo Smith, the county council’s cabinet member for environment and economy, said: “Oxfordshire is at the top of the league when it comes to recycling and reducing household waste. “But Recycle Week is about pushing the message that there is always something extra you can do in a fun and informative way. “You can also find out a bit

more about where your waste goes and the innovative things that are done to stop it simply going into landfill.” In Oxford, a recycling roadshow is being held at the Westgate Shopping Centre on Monday from 10am to 4pm. Community Action Groups in Oxford will also be hosting a drop-in bike fixing workshop at The Story Museum, on Pembroke Street, on June 21. And on the same day, a swap shop is taking place at Gladstone Road Community Centre in Headington, as well as a cooking with leftovers demonstration at the Hill End Centre, and a Master Composters stall in Wolvercote. More information about events can be found at oxfordshire.gov.uk.

She said: “I was really excited about taking part in the rainbow run and really enjoyed the paint being thrown at me. “It was great fun, just like coming to Helen House. Poppy Hanbury, activities fundraiser from Helen & Douglas House, said: “It was a fantastic day. Kennington interchange project is underway WORK has begun on turning Kennington interchange into a hamburger roundabout. The county council have invested more than ÂŁ6m of City Deal funding into the project, which also includes trafficflow improvement measures at Hinksey Hill interchange and the refurbishment of four bridges. It is hoped that work at the Kennington interchange will increase capacity at the junction by 30 per cent.. However, work is expected to continue until November and could cause traffic problems at the junctions, which are already used by 60,000 vehicles a day. At Kennington Roundabout, a new carriageway for eastbound traffic will go through the central island, while the roundabout will be widened for westbound traffic heading towards the A34. The Hinksey Hill Interchange will include a new slip-road from the Southern Bypass onto the A34, and will remove the need for traffic to stop at the lights. The four bridges between Heyford Hill and Hinksey Hill will also be resurfaced as part of the project.

FORMER heavyweight boxing champion David Haye has put his weight behind the campaign to save Temple Cowley Pools (TCP). The world-famous 33-year-old, known as ‘The Hayemaker’, signed the petition earlier this week. Oxford City Council made a decision to close Temple Cowley Pools and Fitness Centre in 2011, planning to build a replacement pool in Blackbird Leys. Work on the ÂŁ9.2million complex in Pegasus Road, which will have three pools, began in July last year. Mr Haye, who became heavyweight champion in 2009, joined friends and campaigners Salman Naqvi and Faisal Aziz in declaring his support for Temple Cowley Pools earlier this week. “I want to lend my support to my friends Salman Naqvi and Faisal Aziz in their assistance to the group ‘Save Temple Cowley Swimming Pools and Fitness Centre’,â€? he said. “I have signed the petition and believe that the council should take note of the concerns of local residents in Cowley and further afield about losing their leisure centre. “I back this campaign and hope this valuable facility remains open to the public for many years to come.â€?

By Jack Johnson jack@taylornewspapers.co.uk

Mr Naqvi, who is on the campaign team, added: “The people of Cowley have spoken and in case no one in the council has listened, a world renowned heavyweight boxer has spoken too. “Our voice will reverberate as a

manifestation of disgruntlement and will not stop until there is an acknowledgement that Temple Cowley Swimming Pools is here to stay. Save TCP have until October 7 to put together a bid to keep the Temple Road site open, as well as incorporating the closed Barns Road Community Centre in Cowley. Nigel Gibson, who leads the

campaign, added: “It’s absolutely fantastic news that David Haye supports the campaign. “Everybody’s support makes a difference, not just the community but clearly high profile figures. “David Haye is well known for his general support for sport and encouraging people to take it up as a way of staying fit. “We very much welcome the support he is giving us.

Boost for social entrepreneurs Read this newspaper online at www.oxfordjournal.co.uk

A NEW partnership set up to provide funding to local social entrepreneurs is due to be launched in the autumn. The Oxfordshire Social Entrepreneurship Partnership (OSEP) is made up of Oxford Brookes University, the University of Oxford and Student Hubs, and aims to support potential business tycoons in the region. OSEP secured more than £100,000 of funding following a joint pitch to social entrepreneur network UnLtd for the project.

Its work will be based on the existing components of the two universities’ social entrepreneurship programmes, and will be made available to their staff, students and recent graduates. John Raftery, pro-vice chancellor for student experience at Oxford Brookes, said: “The possibilities that

OSEP can create for Oxfordshire and its community are endless. “Innovation and a vision for social innovation in Oxford are high on the Brookes’ agenda, and we are pleased to take a leading role together with our partners. “OSEP will be poised to reap all the rewards that seeding social enterprise can create.” Professor Andrew Hamilton, vicechancellor at the University of Oxford, added: “So many of our students do such important and creative work in social enterprise, which is of great benefit to the local community. “We are delighted to work with Oxford Brookes and Student Hubs to support social enterprises and encourage new initiatives.” UnLtd’s judges were unanimous in their support for OSEP, describing the Oxfordshire bid as one of the strongest received. Eight regional clusters were offered funding by UnLtd, with Oxfordshire receiving the highest single amount awarded. • Ben Wilkins, the Santander Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year

NHS executive named as one of 10 best in the UK THE chief executive of Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has been named as one of the 10 “most exceptional leaders” within the health service. Stuart Bell was chosen by the Health Service Journal (HSJ) as one of the best NHS chief executives in the country. He was first named in the HSJ’s list of 50 chief executives ‘doing an exceptional job of steering provider trusts’, before their judging panel narrowed it down to their 10 preferred choices. Stuart said: “While I am grateful to be recognised in this list, I note that the judges paid special attention to the staff survey question about whether

staff would be happy for a friend or relative to be treated in their trust. “I would therefore say that this is recognition is above else a testament to everyone who works hard to deliver a service they would be happy for their family and friends to receive.” Alastair McLellan, editor of HSJ, said: “Leading a provider trust is a mission which surely at times appears thankless, as does the pressing target to deliver outstanding care at reduced cost. “The litmus test for judges was one particular question – the staff survey. Staff who would be happy for a friend or family member to be treated at the organisation at which they work.” • Stuart Bell

Fire service set to strike, but every call will be dealt with OXFORDSHIRE’S deputy chief fire officer has reassured the public that the fire service will respond to every call during today’s union strike. Fire Brigades Union (FBU) members will strike for 24 hours from 9am over a national dispute over central government pension reforms. Non-striking full-time personnel and on-call staff will provide cover, while there is an agreement with the FBU that striking members will return to duty if there is a serious incident. Nathan Travis, deputy chief fire officer, said: “I want to reassure the county’s public that every emergency call made to their Fire and Rescue Service during these scheduled strike periods will be responded to. “We have a cover plan in place which we have utilised well during previous FBU-called strike periods.” Members of the public are also being urged to ensure their own safety. The fire service advise people to check their smoke alarms are working and ensure electrical sockets are not overloaded. Mr Travis added: “These are all easy but significant tasks that people can do to help ensure safety and I would encourage residents to carry them out.” Another strike has been scheduled for June 21.

Owain delighted to win national award A NORTH Hinksey pub manager has been named as one of 30 young achievers in the country to win a national hospitality award. Owain Lloyd Jones, who runs The Fishes, was presented with an Acorn Award for hospitality at a ceremony in Hampshire on June 2. Judges praised the 27-year-old manager for his strong vision and determination to succeed, as well as being impressed with what Owain had achieved in his career so far. He joins big names such as chefs Marco Pierre White, Marcus Wareing and Michael Caines, who have also been recipients of the Acorn Award. “I’m really proud to win an Acorn Award, which is a really massive thing in our industry, and hugely prestigious,” said Owain. “Advice from my father, who said I should do what I love for the rest of my life, started me out on this career path, and it’s advice I’ve always appreciated. “I love what I do and by working hard, taking advantage of all the opportunities that have come my way, and with the support of my family, I feel I have achieved a lot so far. “Having this officially recognised

By Adam Flinn adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk

is just fantastic though, I never expected to win anything as big as this.” Owain graduated from Oxford Brookes University in 2007 with a degree in hotel and restaurant management, and has worked at several pubs across the county including The Fleece in Witney and The James Figg in Thame. Hamish Stoddart, co-founder of The Fishes’ parent company Peach, said: “When Owain joined us from Oxford Brookes as a graduate trainee, we instantly felt he was a special character. “He arrived with raw talent and an evident love of pubs but at that time not necessarily the skills to make a difference. “Owain grabbed the opportunity to learn industry and restaurant knowledge, service skills and management ability, and he set about developing himself to acquire all of these skills.” Mr Stoddard added: “After continuing to take The Fishes from strength to strength, we hope he’ll ultimately go on to run one of his own pubs or become a partner with us.” • Owain Lloyd Hughes and (inset) The Fishes pub in North Hinksey

BALLROOM, jazz and contemporary dance comes together for a brand new show, coming to Oxford’s New Theatre tomorrow night. Dancers and groups from a range of backgrounds will be showing their skills as well as experimenting with other genres, as they blend their styles into one for a unique performance. Strictly Come Dancing’s Kevin Clifton and Karen Hauer provide the ballroom element of the evening, who will be performing alongside World Street Dance champions and Britain’s Got Talent fi nalists Flawless. They will be joined by Olivier award nominee Tommy Franzen, contemporary duo Alleviate and Irish fusion pairing Brosena. “It’s a challenge, and that’s why me and Karen wanted to be a part of it really,” Kevin said about the show. “I think ballroom dancing can be in its own little corner of the dance world, and often doesn’t really mix with other genres. “So aside from it being a performance that involves us, we also saw it as

It is a challenge, but it’s exciting.” As a result of numerous television shows, Kevin believes that dance is seeing a resurgence in popularity, giving shows like Flash Mob the opportunity to take place. He added: “Nowadays you see 12million people watching ballroom dancing on a Saturday night, and everyone has an opinion on it now. “They’ve all learned the dance terminology, and everyone knows what they’re talking about now, whereas 10 years ago that would have been crazy.” Tomorrow’s show begins at 7.30pm. New album, new sound OXFORD-BORN singer Lewis Watson is set to release his debut album ‘The Morning’ next week, ahead of a full UK tour taking place later this year. Lewis has had a successful start to his music career, with his debut EP ‘It’s Got Four Sad Songs On It, BTW’ topping the iTunes singer-songwriter chart on its fi rst day of release in May 2012. He followed that with four more EPs, starting with ‘Another Four Sad Songs’ In October of the same year. In 2013 Lewis released a further three EPs, with ‘The Wild’, ‘Four More Songs’ and ‘Some Songs With Some Friends’ all receiving critical acclaim. It led to the 21-year-old being offered a deal with Warner Bros. Records, culminating in the upcoming release of ‘The Morning’ on Monday. “I’m not a fan of just repackaging old material,” said Lewis. “The original EPs were meant to be work in progress and these versions are much more polished. “I wanted people to be able to see the journey of me as an artist and the

ANHSO - OCEAN CIRCULATION AND CLIMATE - DR RENSKE GELDERLOOS “The ocean plays a very important role in the Earth’s climate system through storage and transport of heat, fresh water, and carbon. Dr Gelderloos will discuss the principle ocean circulation patterns and how they affect well known climatic phenomena such as El NiĂąo and the hydrological cycle. Furthermore, as increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere affect the circulation in the ocean, this will feed back onto the climate system. Based on what we know about how the oceans affect the Earth’s climate, what changes may we expect? Dr Gelderloos is a physical oceanographer interested in subpolar and polar oceans. After specializing in fluid dynamics during a BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering at the University of Twente (Netherlands), she studied deep water formation in the Labrador Sea at KNMI/University of Utrecht for her PhD. She now work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Earth Sciences, studying ocean dynamics in the Canadian Arctic.â€? publicity@anhso.org.uk http://www. anhso.org.uk/

Supermini praised for its style and running costs as it is named best small car for 2014

Top honours for Citroën DS3 A DRIVER satisfaction survey has named the Citroën DS3 as the best small car for 2014. The French supermini, which launched in 2010, scored 79.3 per cent for the What Car? JD Power Survey 2014 satisfaction survey. It means the car ranks 21 overall out of 109 models and scored two per cent over the average 77.3 per cent. The model was praised for its style, running costs, driver visibility, and colour options. Car owner Nick Baum, 44, said: “The DS3 never fails to put a smile on my face. It looks terrific, it’s comfortable and it’s quick; I went for the 1.6 VTi petrol motor. “The DS3 has plenty of room for my three boys in the back, even with the driver’s seat pushed all the way back to accommodate my long legs. “Equipment levels are great, with auto lights and wipers, cruise control and a decent stereo that connects to the iPhone.” What Car? editor Jim Holder said: “DS3 has really established itself as an extremely desirable small car – its bold, fun and customisable styling sets

By Timon Williams it apart from its competitors.” The model was names best supermini in the 2013 survey. Citroën UK’s managing director Linda Jackson said: “To top its class for two successive years is a fantastic result for DS3 and it is all the more special to win an award that is voted for by owners themselves. “Receiving such high praise for a variety of aspects, from styling to running costs, is testament to the DS3’s versatility and desirability as it continues to impress across the board.” Going into next years What Car? JD Power Survey, competitors of the DS3 Citroën model seem to have a lot of catching up to do in both technological and aesthetic fields in order to knock the DS3 off its top spot. The JD Power survey took place between January and March 2014, using cars registered between January 2011 and December 2012. Only models with more than 4,000 sales were considered - 109 in total.

Burnell salutes his ‘fantastic’ Dragons

Thursday, June 12 - Wednesday, June 18, 2014 39

HEAD coach Justin Burnell year. first 20-30 minutes and then dug collective approach. “If you work hard you get hailed his “fantastic” team By Timon Williams “We were constantly reminded in and went up another gear.” after London Welsh beat Bristol that there would be 12,000 people He continued: “What you find rewards. That’s our environment news@oxfordjournal.co.uk Rugby to clinch a place in next screaming and shouting, but we with London Welsh is we haven’t and that’s what we thrive on. season’s Aviva Premiership. had to shut that noise out and really got any marquee signings “People who now come into our The Dragons went into the Burnell added: “Bristol have worry about ourselves. environment now have to fit into or superstars. second leg of the final with a been a very, very good side all “We weathered the storm for the “What we’ve got is a massive what we’re about.” 27-8 lead, ultimately securing an emphatic 48-28 aggregate win. Burnell’s side will now face the likes of Leicester Tigers, Northampton Saints and Saracens in the top flight of English rugby. “It’s just fantastic for London Welsh, it’s a fantastic club,” said Burnell. “How good is that going to be in Oxford and for the supporters – Premiership rugby. “I’m absolutely over the moon.” Initially the Exiles faced tough opposition with tries from Andy Short, Mitch Eadie and Adam Hughes, reducing their lead to eight points. Despite the intense pressure from Bristol, James Tideswell and Seb Stegmann crossed late on to ensure an immediate Premiership return for Welsh. Veteran fly half Gordon Ross did well to convert Stegmann’s try to give the Exiles a 21-20 victory at the Memorial Stadium. • Justin Burnell (centre right) celebrates with (from left to right) Nathan Vella, Mitch Lees and Ollie Stedman (Picture by Martin John)

Battling Plato on the podium in Cheshire BRITISH Touring Car Championship driver Jason Plato secured a podium at Cheshire’s Oulton Park circuit last Sunday. Plato put in a strong performance in qualifying that saw him come second with a time of 1:42.959, only marginally missing out on pole. In race one, Plato struggled to compete against his rear-wheel drive rivals, but a determined drive landed him third place. “There’s meant to be performance

parity, but once again the rear-wheel drive cars streaked ahead at the start and into the distance,” said Plato. In warmer conditions in the afternoon, race two provided an interesting battle between Plato and Audi A4 driver Rob Austin when they levelled on the third lap, although Plato was unable to pass. Instead, he took the approach to defend against Gordon Shedden in the Honda and settled for fourth. Race three saw Plato force his way

past Rob Collard’s BMW for fourth before passing Turkington to secure third place. But after the race he was handed a 1.5 second penalty for the collision with Collard and was moved back to fourth. Plato now turns his focus to Croft, North Yorkshire, on June 29. • Jason Plato secured a podium at Oulton Park (Picture courtesy of btcc.net)

Barkley eager to help Exiles in Premiership FORMER England fly half Olly Barkley said he cannot wait to “get stuck in” after joining newly promoted London Welsh this week. The 32-year-old, who has 23 international caps, became head coach Justin Burnell’s first signing since the Exiles won promotion back to the Aviva Premiership. Barkley joins Welsh after a four-month spell with the Scarlets. “There looks to be a spirit amongst the group that I can’t wait to be involved with,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to the challenge of the Premiership with them all, and helping the club further establish itself at the Kassam Stadium and in Oxford.” Burnell said Barkley was “exactly the type of player” he had been looking for. He added: “He’s got a fantastic game understanding and his other biggest strong point is his accuracy with the ball. “His goal kicking is phenomenal and we’ll need that in the Aviva Premiership.” Tristan Roberts, Nick Reynolds and Chris Elder have all also signed for the Exiles. Meanwhile, the Dragons have been drawn with Edinburgh Rugby, Bordeaux Begles and Lyon in Pool 5 of the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

LONDON Welsh returned ret to the Aviva Premiership Premiersh at the first time of asking last l week, beating Bristol Rug Rugby 48-28 on aggregate in an emphatic two-legged final. The Exiles will now rub shoul-

ders with the likes of Northampton Saints and Saracens in the top-flight of English rugby, just 12 months after the club suffered relegation. For full match reaction, see inside sport.

HYLTON SIGNS Striker pens two-year deal with Oxford OXFORD United’s new signing Danny Hylton says he cannot wait to be a part of the club’s promotion plans next season. The 25-year-old striker penned a two-year-deal with the club last week after being released from newly promoted Sky Bet Championship side Rotherham United. Hylton is reunited with head coach Gary Waddock, with whom he enjoyed a successful spell with at Aldershot Town. He scored 48 goals in 139 appearances as the Shots won promotion into the Football League in 2008.

By Jack Johnson jack@taylornewspapers.co.uk

However, he was unable to break into the Rotherham side last year, after joining the Millers in the summer, and was loaned out to Sky Bet League Two sides Bury and AFC Wimbledon. “It has been a frustrating time at Rotherham,” he said. “I am really pleased to join Oxford on a permanent basis. “I have played against them a number of times and know it’s an

ambitious club with good players and I am really looking forward to it. “I enjoyed working with Gary Waddock at Aldershot and I played some of the best football of my career under him. “His sides work hard for each other and play good football and I can’t wait to be part of that next season.” The striker is Waddock’s first signing of the summer and the United boss is confident that Hylton will hit the ground running at the Kassam Stadium. “Danny has a great attitude and

wants to show what he can do again,” said Waddock. “He maybe has a point to prove and is hungry to do well here.” Earlier this week, United announced they will play Championship club AFC Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly at the Kassam on August 2. Waddock’s side will also host second tier side Wolves on July 29. • Danny Hylton, in action for Rotherham United last season, has signed for Oxford United (Picture by Paul Wickson)
