WIND FARM IS TURNED DOWN New Chinook helicopters make debut appearance in Odiham
COUNCILL COUNCILLORS rejected proposed plans for a wind farm to be built in Bullington B Cross at a meeting o on Monday night. Representatives from BasingRepresent stoke and Deane, De Test Valley and Winchester decided not to give permission for fo the turbines, after they were recommended for refusal by planning officers. A number of reasons were given for the refusal, including them being a danger to air traffic, effects on wildlife and concerns over the look of the turbines. EDF Energy Renewables (EDF-ER) wanted to build 14 turbines on land near to the junction of the A34 and A303, on land covered by the three councils. Four of the turbines would have fallen within Basingstoke and Deane, with seven in Winchester and three in Test Valley. The wind farm had a mixed response from residents in Basingstoke and Deane, with 1,431 comments for the plans submitted to the council, and 1,329 against. Jonathan Levy, spokesman for EDF-ER, said: “We are naturally disappointed at the decisions taken by the councils involved. “We fi rmly believe the Bullington Cross site is an excellent location for a wind farm and one

that has potential to generate significant benefits to both the local community and economy. “We will now carefully review the grounds for this decision and consider our options going forward.” One of the groups who supported the turbines was the Hampshire Renewable Energy Co-operative. It’s director, Martin Heath, said: “Clearly this is a great disappointment to us and to the many volunteers that helped us out over the past 13 months. “We will be encouraging EDF-ER to appeal.” Basingstoke and Deane’s Development Control Committee refused the application by seven votes to five. A statement released by the council said: “While each individual authority had to reach a decision on their own planning applications, it was agreed that a joint committee meeting would be held to hear all three applications at one time. “The outcome was that all three councils refused the applications they were considering.”

THE annual Basingstoke Festival begins tomorrow, with a diverse mix of theatre, music and comedy set to take over the town for the next three weeks. This is the third year the festival will be held, and takes place at a range of venues across the

The Reablement and Assessment of Care Team (REACT) service will support those returning home from hospital or experiencing change in their care needs. A MUM nominated for a national volunteering award has said the team behind her has been key to her charity’s success. Emma Hall co-founded Stepping Stones in November 2006 with Sharon Smith – both had children with Down’s Syndrome. It initially began as a simple coffee morning, as Fleet mum Emma wanted to meet people in her situation. Now, seven-and-a-half years on, the Surrey-based charity supports over 100 families who have children with the condition. And Emma has fought off over 700 others to be in the ďŹ nal ďŹ ve for Britain’s Best Volunteer award, organised by charity insurer Markel UK and the Small Charities Coalition. Emma’s daughter Isla, now eight, has the condition. Emma also has another daughter,

Niamh, with her husband Dan. “It’s hugely attering for me for people to appreciate what I do,â€? said Emma. “But ultimately it means people are talking about Down’s Syndrome, and it means that people are talking about the people we support. “They’re seeing that our lives aren’t doom and gloom and our children aren’t suffering at all. “Our children are having great fun, enjoying times with their friends, the families are getting out and are part of the local community. “And having a disabled child isn’t a negative thing in their lives, it’s something that’s opened up lots of new possibilities, and created new friendships.â€? There are nine Stepping Stones
trustees, including Emma, and 10 more volunteers who work alongside them. Indeed, the volunteers have gone on journeys themselves. The charity’s parent support worker, according to Emma, could not walk into the ďŹ rst coffee morning, as she was too scared to admit her daughter had the condition. “And now new families who report back to us say that she is the reason they actually come along and get involved,â€? added Emma. “We’ve grown based on what people have asked for – such as training for their schools, activities for the children. It’s an enormous resource now and there’s deďŹ nitely power in numbers.â€? Vote for Emma at www.markeluk.com/britains-best-volunteer. Voting is open until March 21, with the winner announced three days later.

RAF’s new helicopter unveiled at Odiham THE RAF’s first new Chinook Mk6 helicopters were unveiled by defence secretary Philip Hammond at RAF Odiham on Monday. Fourteen new helicopters will enter active service, meaning there will be a total of 60 Chinooks in the RAF fleet. They were ordered as part of a £1bn programme in 2011, with the fi rst three being delivered to the RAF before they start training in the UK. As well as the unveiling, Mr Hammond also announced a £115m agreement with Boeing Defence UK to maintain the Chinooks’ engines, expected to reduce costs by more than £20m. “The strategic importance of the Chinook Mk6 should not be underestimated,” said Mr Hammond. “These helicopters will provide a significant uplift in helicopter capability operating as the battlefield workhorse of the RAF on the frontline for decades to come. “The new aircraft are part of an £11bn investment that will sus-

RAF Odiham’s air chief marshal Sir Andrew Pulford said: “The Mk6 represents the pinnacle of the RAF’s heavy lift capability and is the most advanced Chinook helicopter we have ever operated. “These aircraft have proved themselves time and again on operations, most recently in Afghanistan, and the new Mk6 will ensure the Chinook fleet continues to play a key role.” All 14 helicopters are expected to be delivered to the Ministry of Defence before the end of 2015, and should be fully operational by early 2017. Adrian Baguley, the Ministry of Defence’s director of helicopters, said: “The Chinook Mk6 has been delivered into service on time. “This has been achieved through the excellent work of Defence Equipment and Support working together with our industry suppliers to deliver this exceptional new heavy lift helicopter capability for UK • (From left) Adrian Baguley, Philip Hammond and Sir Andrew Pulford with one of the new defence.” Chinook Mk6 helicopters (Picture courtesy of the Ministry of Defence)

CCTV image released of attempted Tesco robber POLICE are searching for two men after they attempted to rob a convenience store in Basingstoke last Friday. The offenders walked into the Tesco Express store on Oakridge Road at around 11pm, and threatened a staff member with a knife. They fled the scene empty handed after the shop worker shouted for help. Skier honoured for work with wounded soldiers A FORMER Basingstoke soldier has been recognised by the Queen for his work teaching wounded soldiers to ski. Les Pond, 44, was honoured with a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours and Awards List announced on June 14. He has taught dozens of soldiers, sailors and airmen and women who have suffered life changing injuries or illnesses how to ski in Austria through adaptive skiing.
By Katriona Ormiston news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk
Adaptive skiing means people who have lost limbs can ski using varies techniques and equipment and acts as a sports rehab for the wounded. Mr Pond, who went to Harriet Costello Secondary School in Crossborough Hill, has since moved to Bavaria in Southern Germany.
The dad-of-two said: “I am shocked and surprised by the award but obviously delighted. “I was fortunate enough to participate in a great deal of skiing during my time in the Army. “I have been delighted that I have been able to put something back into it , especially with those people suffering from some kind of impairment. “There is a lot of hard work that goes with Adaptive skiing, but when you see the smiles and the enjoyment at the end of the day,
you know it is all worth it.” Mr Pond launched an adaptive ski scheme and was instrumental in developing a cohort of instructors needed. The Battle Back ski programme sees groups of wounded, injured or sick personnel attend a course to learn to ski either as a complete novice or as someone who has previously skied and now has to adjust their skiing as a result of their condition. He joined the Army in 1986 as a junior leader recruit in the Royal Engineers at Old Park Barracks in Dover and joined the regimental ski team. He was later posted to 35 Engineer Regiment in Hameln in Germany for nine years where he continued skiing and competed at Army and inter services level. On leaving the Army in 1997 he joined the staff of the Alpine Training Centre in Bavaria where he still works and lives with wife Birgit sons, Liam, 13, and Luke, 11. His mother Vera and father Fred still live in Basingstoke with his brother Steven. Colonel Nick Richardson, Commander of the Army’s Adventurous Training Group said: “It is clear that the services adaptive ski scheme would not exist in its current state without the ability, drive and efforts of Les Pond.
“I fi rst met him in 1986 when he was a novice skier and his talent was very apparent. “All that knowledge and experience he has gained from his career has been put to good use. He was one of 1,149 recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours last week including Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie for her work to end sexual violence in confl ict, and Actress Dame Maggie Smith. Concerns raised over tree felling RESIDENTS are worried trees are being felled in Sherfieldon-Loddon to make way for travellers. A court injunction was granted on Friday to stop more trees being chopped down by landowners at the Dixon Road site north of the Taylor’s Farm development. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council sought an injunction at Winchester County Court after dozens of pine trees were hacked down. Residents raised their concerns to the council over the past two weeks. On Monday, Basingstoke MP Maria Miller said: “This woodland area has been devastated by the unlawful felling of large pine trees on the site, and I have already contacted the Forestry Commission about the need to take action against this contravention of the Forestry Act. “Local residents are clearly concerned about further activity at the site, and I welcome the Borough Council’s swift action in getting an injunction to pre-

vent any more illegal work on the land, or use for residential purposes. “I am in touch with the Borough Council and the Basingstoke police to see what further protection is available to residents if the new owners of the land continue to flout the law.” Following the court injunction on Friday, the council’s corporate director, Karen Brimacombe, said: “Residents’ concerns have focused on the possibility of this land being used by the new owners as a traveller site. “Given the size and scale of the site and the potential impact from a change of use of the land for whatever purpose, the judge granted the injunction. This injunction forbids anyone from doing anything on the land that would need planning permission. Any evidence that anyone had breached this order could result in them being sent to prison by the county court. “Should members of the public have evidence that the order has been breached, they should contact the council.”

Play abandoned PLANS to tarmac a play area in Aldermaston have been abandoned. Aldermaston Parish Council have been looking into resurfacing the area around the play equipment at the Rec. At a meeting last week councillors decided to top up the existing wood chipping instead as the cheaper and more practical solution. The parish council’s next meeting is set for July 8 at 7.30pm in the parish hall in The Street.

Miller praises charity for its positive work JOBSEEKERS met with Basingstoke MP Maria Miller at The Salvation Army charity on Monday to find out about a project to get people into work. The scheme, based at the charity’s base in the Wessex Close church, helps people make job applications, access training, Internet and IT facilities, and get assistance with CVs. Staff and volunteers run the programme, called Employment Plus Local. Mike Beeston, who is in charge of the project in Basingstoke, said: “Unemployment is one of the main causes of poverty and social exclusion in Basingstoke. “As a Church and charity based in the town, we wanted to address this as we care about every aspect of a person’s welfare. He added: “Peoples’ lives are transformed when in employment, and this is an active way in which we could offer a friendly face as we help people fi nd work.” Mrs Miller said: “Many people fi nd it tough to get back into employment after a sustained period out of work and need the help of The Salvation Army. “This project is providing positive support to people going through this difficult experience, and I’m pleased to see that this centre is offering guidance, the right facilities and support to get people into a job that matches their skills.”

Record attempt MORE than 2,000 ukulele players have signed up to play their way into the world record books. Hampshire Music Hub is organising a world record attempt to beat Japan’s band of 2,134 ukulele players in Kanagawa in 2012. So far more than 2,150 ukulele players have signed up, but another world record bid in America is being attempted later this month. Jill Larner, head of Hampshire Music Service, said: “The response to our initial appeal has been excellent and I am grateful to all those who have signed up so far. I have just learned that an American ukulele world record attempt is taking place later this month, so we are going to need all the help we can get to be in with a chance of bringing the world record to Hampshire.” Ukukele players are being asked to sign up for the effort at Southampton Football Club on July 18 from 1.30pm to 3pm.

Revamp work to begin at hospice By Katriona Ormiston news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk
BUILDING work to revamp a children’s hospice near Basingstoke is due to start next month. Major £4m building work to refurbish Naomi House, in Sutton Scotney, is due to start in July for work to fi nish in April 2015. Earlier this year the charity announced plans to revamp the 17-year-old building. New rooms for music therapy, arts and crafts, and messy play are to be built. The children’s bedrooms are also to be made bigger and family space is to be increased. A new bridge will link Naomi House and Jacksplace together so the two hospices can share the updated hydrotherapy pool in Jacksplace. Deputy chief executive at Naomi House at Jacksplace, Mark Smith, said: “This marks another very important milestone in our journey towards creating a hospice building which fully meets the needs of the life-limited children and families we care for from across central southern England. “These families deserve the very best environment in which to receive the invaluable care

Van taken after driver is pulled from his vehicle A ROBBER dragged a man out from behind the steering wheel of his van before driving off with it. The 49-year-old victim was parked in his grey Ford transit in Hill View Road, off Winchester Road at about 2.30am on June 9. The robber, who was wearing a black and white scarf around his face, pulled the driver’s door open and demanded the victim get out. When he refused he grabbed the man by his arm and pulled him out the van before the victim fell to the floor. The offender then drove off in the van, down Hill View Road and turned left onto Winchester Road. The victim suffered cuts and grazes and an injury to his ankle from the fall Police Constable Craig Bannerman, said: “I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident, or anyone who may have become victim of a similar incident but has not yet reported it, to come forward and speak to us. “Were you in the area at the time of the incident? “Did you see a van being driven off at speed? “I would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen a gray transit van parked in their area, or anyone living nearby who has their own CCTV.” Anyone with information is asked to call PC Bannerman via the police 101 number. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Cops search for men after ‘strange’ incident Classes prove to be popular
By Katriona Ormiston news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk
MORE than 400 elderly people take part in weekly exercise classes, a year after the programme launched. The Steady and Strong classes aim was to reduce the number of falls and fractures in people over 65 through keeping people active. They were launched in Basingstoke and across Hampshire last year by Hampshire County Council’s older people’s well-being team and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. One member of the Alton class, who didn’t want to be named, suffered a serious spinal injury some years ago. They said: “The class started very gently at fi rst, gradually building up strength and stamina. “This has improved my ability to move and walk better, to sit and stand and most of all to get up from a fall properly - something which has been of benefit to me on three occasions. “My balance has improved and I can now shower and dry without help. This may seem a trivial thing, but for me it is a huge achievement. “I have met some lovely people in the group and consider them friends.”
POLICE have released an e-fit of a man they want to talk to after a suspicious incident in Cranbourne. A dog walker parked her van near the underpass at the bottom of Cranbourne Lane just after 8pm on June 2. As she got out of her van to get her dogs ready for a walk she heard a man say “Oi, she’s still here”. When she looked up she saw a man standing in front of her looking at the van, and then another man who opened the drivers side door and had his hands on the steering wheel. When the dog walker spoke to the man he let go of the wheel and both the men walked away off Cranbourne Lane through the underpass. Police Constable Craig Bannerman said: “This was a strange incident. “I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen the man in the e-fit image along with another man, to get in touch.” Both men are believed to be in their early 20s. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
They are held in village halls, community centres, leisure centres and sheltered housing buildings. There are now over 40 classes running across the county and 15 new instructors have been trained in Hampshire to run falls prevention classes. Liz Fairhurst, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for adult social care and public health, said: “Steady and Strong classes have proved very effective in helping people regain and maintain their confidence; this is so vital as older people who are not physically active are less able to do every-day tasks and so are more likely to need support and care. Exercise is one of the most important factors in preventing a fall.” Falls and fractures in 65 and overs account for over 4 million hospital bed days each year in England, according to the charity Age UK. Exercise programmes have been shown to reduce falls by as much as 54 per cent. Anyone interested in the classes can ask their GP or call Hampshire’s falls prevention and physical activity co-ordinator Sophie Jevons on 01962 846605.
News Bites Author in town for book signing THE author of a new children’s book was in Basingstoke’s Market Place to sign copies of her work on Saturday. Fiction book Bugglepuffs and the Magic Key, by Hampshire author Charlotte Bennett, has just been released in the US. Ms Bennett was at Barclays bank for the 10.30am to 2pm book-signing.
Fines to be waived FINES for footballers across Hampshire are to be waived by the county’s Football Association to encourage players back into the sport. The ‘return to football’ drive by Hampshire FA comes during the start of the football World Cup last week. There are about 3,000 players on suspension in Hampshire who have not paid disciplinary fines,

going to write a little bit more as we wind down the tour,” said Joe. “When I feel like I’ve got a good set of songs and the direction I want to go into, then I’ll do it straight away. “However the tour’s been going great. It’s been a hectic schedule but it’s genuinely been so much fun. “It’s a very different show I think from what people might have seen before at my concerts.” Away from music, Joe was crowned the winner of Channel 4 skiing series The Jump earlier this year, after joining as a late replacement to socialite Henry Conway. Joe had been skiing in Austria at the time, and won the competition in February this year after jumping 17.5 metres off the K40 ski jump. “It was hard and it was painful, but it was absolutely one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” he added. “I wasn’t supposed to be part of the show, but Henry broke his hand, and they didn’t have time to train anyone to ski, because obviously those guys had been out there for two months. “So I was planning to have two months off before the tour started, but I had a break in my schedule and said I’d do it.” Next Friday’s show starts at 7.45pm. taken identities and we will perform it very much as a colourful, entertaining romp. “It is of course totally authentic. We are following in the footsteps of Shakespeare’s own Globe Theatre when all roles were taken by men. “The Players have built a reputation for strong, all-male shows over the past decade.” The Comedy of Errors is known for being one of Shakespeare’s most farcical comedies, using slapstick and mistaken identity to create the humour. It tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were accidently separated at birth, and who try to track each other down. Making Shakespeare more accessible is one of the Players’ key aims, so they ensure their productions are kept relatively short. Michael added: “Our shows are never longer than two hours and we always try to make them crystal clear, and an amalgam of energy, entertainment and colour. “We set out to take audiences of all ages on a journey and make them feel very much part of the production.” The show takes place on June 29, and starts at 5pm at the Bartons Lane venue in Basingstoke. SKYACTIV technology the reason behind popularity, says Japanese car manufacturer
New Mazda3 proves to be a hit THE petrol version of the new Mazda3 has proved a bigger hit than expected. The Japanese car manufacturer demonstrated the car’s eco friendly attributes at a recent car show in Silverstone. Its SKYACTIV technology combines low carbon dioxide emissions with fuel economy. The car company claims it is the reason behind high demand for business drivers. Due to the success at the recent show, the Japanese giants are expecting a growth of around 30 per cent in its sales in 2014 to 2015. Mazda says demand for the model has far exceeded expectations. Head of fleet Steve Tomlinson said: “Miles per gallon from the all-new Mazda3 SKYACTIV-G petrol engines is phenomenal and as average company car mileage reduces many drivers do not require a diesel engine model. Furthermore, businesses and drivers benefit from the lower pump price of petrol. “Many companies link vehicle choice lists to a monthly lease rate allowance

REVIEW: Mazda3

and drivers typically select models that deliver the best value for money. “The combination of power, performance and specification delivered by the Mazda3 petrol engine range twinned with low CO2 and top-notch MPG is proving very attractive when factored against a monthly lease rate, which reflects annual mileage and excellent residual values.” The Mazda3 is in Hatchback and Fastback saloon models. Tomlinson added: “The Fastback is proving popular amongst company car drivers who prefer coupé-like styling in a mid-sized four-door saloon. “There is no doubt that diesel-powered Hatchback derivatives of the all-new Mazda3 will remain the most popular among company car drivers. However, the arrival of SKYACTIV technology in the all-new Mazda3 in both Hatchback and Fastback bodystyles is changing the market allied to the lifestyles of today’s employees.” • The new Mazda3 has proved a bigger hit than first expected

Sport Bison snap up Rounding as Standing leaves BASINGSTOKE Bison have made their first new signing ahead of the new season, with forward Grant Rounding joining from the Bracknell Bees. The 23-year-old started playing ice hockey for the under-10 Bison team, but moved down the road to Bracknell aged 14, where he spent the rest of his junior career. He made his English Ice Hockey Premier League debut for the Bees in the 2010/11 season, and last year scored 11 times on his way to 19 points. “I started watching ice hockey in Basingstoke and always wanted to play for the team,” said Rounding. “It feels somewhat surreal it is fi nally going to happen. For me it is like playing for my hometown team. “I can’t wait for the season to start.” Player/coach Doug Sheppard said: “Grant is a player who gives 100 per cent every shift and fits in well with the Bison work ethic. “I see him scoring 15-plus goals for us this season and he will certainly add some depth to our offence.” Meanwhile, it was also announced that netminder Connor Standing was leaving The Herd. Sheppard added: “I, and everyone associated with the club, would like to thank him for his efforts over the past three seasons, and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Le Mans dream ends after gearbox issue By Adam Flinn news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk
A GEARBOX problem ruined any chance of Basingstoke’s Archie Hamilton finishing on the podium at Le Mans 24 Hours, with his team finishing 12th overall. Hamilton and team-mates Johnny Mowlem and Mark Patterson had qualified their Ferrari 458 Italia 11th in the GTEAm class last week. Following a strong start, Hamilton was able to move up to second position in his fi rst double stint behind the wheel. But a gearbox problem meant an extended pitstop for the Ram Racing team, costing them around 15 laps to the leaders and dropping them right down the order. They completed 319 laps in total, 20 less than class winners Gianmaria Bruni, Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander. The overall race was won by André Lotterer, Benoît Tréluyer and Marcel Fässler in the Audi R18 LMP1 car, completing 379 laps in the process. “The car felt really good and I had a really solid run in second place,” said Hamilton. “Managing traffic was the most challenging part of the race because of the different classes,

‘Stoke remain unbeaten with derby victory BASINGSTOKE and North Hants were the winners in their derby match against Hook and Newnham Basics, winning by 50 runs. Played at Basingstoke, the hosts had set a relatively low target of 143, but Basics could only score 93 in reply. It means that Basingstoke remain unbeaten from their opening five games in their bid to win the Southern Electric Premier Division 1. Elsewhere, Hartley Wintney won their match against Havant 2 by four runs in a comfortable victory. Havant had set a target of 128, and it took Wintney just 20.2 overs to post their final score of 132-3.
Narrowly beaten
but I didn’t take risks to make sure we could fi nish the race. “To fi nish the race is something that was important to the team as it’s their fi rst Le Mans. We’ve achieved that so I’m happy to have been part of that.
“My grandfather won on his third attempt so I’m hoping that it will be third time lucky for me too and next year will be the one.” Hamilton returns to action this weekend in the International GT
Open championship, with rounds five and six being staged at the Spanish circuit of Jerez. He and team-mate Diederik Sijthoff are currently 23rd in the standings, after a tough start to the season.
Rose falls short in US Open title defence JUSTIN Rose put in a strong performance in the US Open last week, but was unable to defend his first major title at the Pinehurst course in North Carolina. The North Hampshire golfer recorded rounds of 72, 69, 70 and 72 to fi nish in a tie for 12th, with a score of three over par. Rose had got off to a bad start

as he bogeyed four of his fi rst nine holes, but three birdies limited the damage to a two-over round of 72. The second round went better for Rose as he managed to shoot one under par, scoring three birdies and two bogeys during the day. A double bogey on the ninth cost Rose the chance of a second
successive under par round on Saturday, but he was able to post a level par score of 70. The fi nal day was much more eventful for Rose. He eagled the fi fth and backed it up with three birdies, but seven bogeys left him two-over for the day, and three-over for the tournament. Former World No.1 Martin
Kaymer of Germany was the overall winner. Kaymer dominated the fi rst two days to get to 10-under, holding on to win his second major title by eight shots.

FOR NEW STADIUM Application for ground is ratified by borough council BASINGSTOKE Town are edging closer towards securing a new stadium. The Skrill South club are planning on moving into a brand new stadium at the proposed Common Road site. The Camrose Ground has been the home of the Dragons since their formation back in 1896, but in March 2012, the club submitted a planning application to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for a potential move to Common Road. The club released an official statement earlier this week. It said: “Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council have now ratified the commercial agreement for the redevelopment of the current Camrose Ground and the new purposebuilt stadium.” The latest news about the stadium plans has pleased chairman Rafi Razzak. He said: “This is a major step for us in the right direction. “It is the culmination of years of consultation and evaluation of our plans and dreams to move to a new stadium. “A lot of work has been carried out by a lot of people. “We are now more than ever
By James Richings news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk
excited and confident that our plans will be realised. “We believe we have considered all the aspects and are confident in our application.” Mr Razzack continued: “Above all, this is a community stadium and hopefully we will all be proud of it and we shall see Basingstoke Town Football Club have it as it’s home for many years to come.” The Camrose currently has a capacity of 6,000, but only has 650 seats in the ground, averaging 312 fans per home game. The Dragons have also confi rmed their pre-season fi xture schedule for the summer. Basingstoke will play friendlies against Winchester City, Yeovil Town, Reading U21, Hungerford Town, Newport County, Fleet Town and Woking in the next six weeks. Basingstoke fi nished 14th for a second consecutive season last term, but, fi nished the campaign on a high by winning the Hampshire Cup, beating Havant and Waterlooville 3-2 in the fi nal.
