Brown and black Tabby cat Archie was found collapsed on the ground with open neck wounds tied to a fence in Hartley Wintney. CHARITY SUCCESS ‘IS TEAM EFFORT’ A MUM nominated for a national volunteering award has said the team behind her has been key to her charity’s success. Emma Hall co-founded Stepping Stones in November 2006 with Sharon Smith – both had children with Down’s Syndrome. It initially began as a simple coffee morning, as Fleet mum Emma wanted to meet people in her situation. Now, seven-and-a-half years on, the Surrey-based charity supports over 100 families who have children with the condition. And Emma has fought off over 700 others to be in the ďŹ nal ďŹ ve for Britain’s Best Volunteer award, organised by charity insurer Markel UK and the Small Charities Coalition. Emma’s daughter Isla, now eight, has the condition. Emma also has another daughter,

Remembrance poppies bloom POPPIES are out in force at Basingstoke’s War Memorial Park to remember fallen soldiers of the Frist World War. The flowers bloomed this month ahead of the centenary of the start of the war on August 4. The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Roger Gardiner, visited the park on Monday with President of Basingstoke Royal British Legion David Buttle. Cllr Gardiner said: “The poppies are not only a visual reminder of the sacrifice made a century ago by our troops fighting in the Great War, but are also beautiful to look at. “The poppy beds will provide a focus for quiet reflection this summer and I encourage everyone to visit our war memorial and to stop a while in the park while the poppies are in bloom.� Gardeners from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council sowed the seeds by the main entrance to the park and next to the woodland on the opposite side.

They planted a special type of Victoria Cross poppy alongside a wildflower seed mixture, which should flower over the next few months. Poppies became a symbol of remembrance at the end of the First World War, as it was the only flower that grew on the barren battlefields. In 1918, at the end of the war, the fields of northern France and Flanders were fi lled with millions of poppies. More than nine million soldiers died in the fighting. The council worked with an Overton company called Wildflower Turf Ltd who masterminded the wildflower areas around the stadiums at the London 2012 Olympics. Missing 12-year-old girl last spotted in Basingstoke A MISSING 12-year-old girl was last seen on CCTV in Basingstoke on Sunday. Concerns were raised about Ines Freitas, from Andover, after her parents contacted police on Sunday afternoon. She was seen in Festival Place on CCTV at about 4.15pm. Detective Inspector Amanda Horsburgh of Hampshire Constabulary said: “Several lines of enquiries are being followed to find Ines. “Our thanks to Ines’s family, local businesses, partner agencies and public transport operators for their assistance with the investigation so far. “There is no information to confirm Ines is a victim of crime or suspected of any wrongdoing. “One line of enquiry is that Ines could be with a friend, but we are clearly concerned about Ines due to her age.�

News Bites Hospice benefits from funding for patient hoists A DONATION of £1,000 to a Basingstoke hospice will go towards hoists to lift and move patients. The Atomic Weapon’s Establishment (AWE) gave the money to St Michael’s Hospice on June 12. It will fund the annual cost of maintaining the charity’s hoists which help lift and move people. St Michael’s Hospice cares for patients throughout North Hampshire affected by lifelimiting illness.
Adult education scheme praised by inspectors OFSTED praised a Hampshire project to encourage adults back into education last week. Inspectors picked the Hampshire County Council scheme as an example of good work last Tuesday. The council’s family learning project works with tutors, teachers, headteachers and other partners to teach parents, carers and their children together. Executive lead member for children’s services at Hampshire County Council, Keith Mans, said: “This is excellent news. I am really pleased that the adult community learning work that we lead in Hampshire has been recognised nationally.�

FORMULA 1 legend Jody Scheckter handed out safe driving prizes at a Basingstoke awards ceremony. The former world champion racer, who now runs Laverstoke Farm in Overton, presented the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme at Hampshire Court Hotel in Chineham on June 11. The project, which is in its 20th year, runs training sessions for minibus drivers at schools and voluntary organisations across Hampshire. Entertainers set for Basingstoke Festival A VIRTUAL hug wrapped around Basingstoke’s town centre as thousands enjoyed the first of more than 100 shows kicking off Basingstoke Festival 2014 last weekend. Dance troupes, choirs, theatre groups, bands, and performers took to makeshift stages to wow audiences across the town. The programme, which launched on June 20, runs until July 13, stars performers including actor-comedian Dawn French and world-famous violinist Nigel Kennedy.

On Saturday, hundreds gathered to form a human chain around the town centre. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council cabinet member for partnerships, Cathy Osselton, said: “What a fantastic atmosphere for the fi rst weekend of the Basingstoke Festival. “With weekends that focus on family fun, busking and street
entertainment and of course Basingstoke Live still to come, there is something in the programme for every taste and to suit every pocket.” At the Top of the Town performers Les Cubitenistes The Museum of Everyday Life thrilled shoppers and passersby from Friday to Sunday. Using a range of quirky props they created framed images of Basingstoke residents which were instantly downloaded and exhibited. Festival Square drew in audi-
ences to their street theatre shows that will be running throughout the festival and knitters got in on the act decorating the town. In The Malls, the It’s Showtime stage stopped shoppers and residents throughout the weekend with acts including Proteus Young People’s Theatre’s Bugsy Malone and snippets from Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. While Basingstoke Festival of Choirs, led by David Ogborn, gave a sneak preview of their
main show at the Anvil on July 6. With more than 100 performances planned makes this year’s Basingstoke Festival the biggest yet. Multi-million pound plans for historic mill A CAMPAIGN to raise more than £1.5m for a redevelopment of Whitchurch’s Victorian silk mill will be launched on Wednesday. An appeal to raise £200,000 will be announced alongside a £1.7m Heritage Lottery Fund grant bid for Whitchurch Silk Mill. Its machinery and buildings would be restored as part of the project. The set-up would also be changed so visitors can properly see the
working parts of the mill. Chairman of Whitchurch Silk Mill Trustees, Rupert Nabarro, said: “The Mill is ready to begin the process of major restoration and development at one of the Hampshire’s most valuable assets. He added: “The Mill was at serious risk of closure two years ago and it was rescued largely by the energy and diligence of Whitchurch citizens.”
It is the only mill in England still weaving silk in its original building, on Victorian machinery, and where some of the processes are still water powered. Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan, will be guest of honour at the mill to showcase its bicentenary appeal. New ways for police to combat domestic violence NEW powers to protect victims of domestic violence were launched across Hampshire on Monday. They mean Hampshire Police can apply for an order through Magistrates’ courts stopping someone from contacting their partner for up to 28 days – even without the victim’s consent. Hampshire Constabulary’s head of domestic abuse, Superintendent Ben Snuggs, said: “The new powers enable us and the courts to create valuable breathing space for victims. “We know that those at risk of domestic violence often fi nd it very difficult to come forward to report it so it’s important that we take steps to protect them when they do.” Officers can apply for a Domestic Violence Protection Notices to prevent further violence between partners after an incident of domestic violence. The notice would be in place for 48 hours initially, which police can extend to between 14 to 28 days if they apply for a Domestic Violence Protection Order through a Magistrates’ court. The legislation was trialled in western Hampshire from May 19. In the following month police used six notices and successfully applied for six orders.

The charity has pledged to raise £5m of the £13m needed for a new cancer centre for North Hampshire – at a site to be confi rmed.
It has already raised £1m 18 months on from being founded. Vickie Randall, charity manager said: “We know that with the help of local people we can make this project a success. “We are really excited and keen to encourage local school children to get involved in our campaign and we know that

they’ll have a great time doing it! It’s a simple, fun way for the children to be part of our project and we can’t wait to get them involved.” Merv Rees, surgeon and Clinical Director of Surgery at Basingstoke Hospital, said: “The cancer centre will have a direct impact on local people, it will enable cancer sufferers to receive treatment in a centre of excellence, all the services they need will be under one roof. “We know that this is what the people of Hampshire want and need and we are keen to get as many people in our community involved in our project as we can so that we can really make a difference together.” The Ark Cancer Centre Charity has been awarded a match giving fund, which means it can double donations through Newbury-based grant-giving charity Greenham Common Trust. The new centre is planned to open in 2016. In the meantime an interim radiotherapy unit is due to open at Basingstoke hospital. The unit will run at the Aldermaston Road hospital while the new cancer centre is built. Spending cuts on track HAMPSHIRE County Council is more than half way to meeting its £102million savings target, its cabinet announced on Monday. But councillors warned there would be not let up in the drive to reduce council spending. The council has to save £102m by Spring 2015 – totalling more than £230m savings made since 2008. County council leader Roy Perry said: “With more people needing support in their old age and growing numbers of vulnerable children and adults needing expensive care, this is no time to be taking our foot off the pedal. “Our toughest test is the challenge of being able to afford to provide the best quality services to those who need them most.” Councils across the UK have been set savings targets as part of central Government cuts. Cllr Perry added: “We know from the Bank of England and the Chancellor that these cuts and economic pressures will continue to be with us for the foreseeable future.” • Hampshire County Council leader Roy Perry

THE battle against the county’s potholes was given a £6million cash boost on Friday. All repair works have to be fi nished by the end of March 2015 as part of the deal. The money comes after Prime Minister David Cameron launched a £168m Government pothole fund inviting councils to apply for the cash in April. Hampshire County Council submitted its bid for a share of the cash last month to repair its 5,280-mile road network. The roads were hit badly after wet weather and flooding over winter. Executive member for economy, transport and environment, Seán Woodward, said: “I am pleased to see that not only has the Government recognised the extent of the damage to Hampshire’s roads but also that it is reassured that the County Council can spend this money wisely. He added: “Keeping Hampshire moving is a priority for us. “Good infrastructure is critical to Hampshire’s economic prospects and good roads impact enormously on the day to day life of all who live and work here. “We already have extra gangs and extra machinery out on the network, and are using some

The wall of a partially collapsed underground drainage channel is being fixed at Norton Farm east of the B3006 Selborne Road junction and Hall Lane. Plans to improve and protect Basingstoke town centre with conservation plans unveiled PLANS to change Basingstoke’s conservation area to protect the town’s historic buildings and character go on show on Monday. Basingstoke and Deane Town Council have revised the document to include parts of Winchester Road and exclude Lauriston Court. It also wants to put harsher limits on the height and sizes of advertising boards in Top of Town. Historic street signs could also be restored or reinstated and modern signs removed when they double-up with old signs. While more trees could be planted in Church Square and the current footbridge between upper and lower Church Street over Timberlake Road replaced. Hayley Eachus, cabinet member for community services and the environment, said: “Basingstoke’s town centre has a special character and we want to do everything we can to ensure that one of the town’s most valued historic areas is preserved. “We need the support of the residents to help us shape the conservation area to safeguard it for the future.” As part of the changes development would be restricted in

News Bites Charity race NURSERY staff raised £270 for charity taking at a Race for Life last weekend. The nine staff members from Basingstoke’s Kiddi Caru in Broadmere Road ran 5k and 10k distances at the charity challenge for Cancer Research. Nursery manager Suzanne Chilvers said: “We had a fantastic day – it is always great fun getting together with the ladies from the nursery and we had the added bonus that we were able to raise money for such a worthwhile cause.”

Kids get creative planting for charity funds CHILDREN turned old wellies, mugs, and hot chocolate pots into plants and flowers at a Basingstoke school to raise money for a children’s charity. Old Basing Infant School pupils are selling off their handiwork on Friday at a plant sale from 2.45pm to 4pm at the school in The Mead. The children got to work last Monday at their Milkingpen Lane school after hearing an assembly about international charity UNICEF and their vari-
ous children’s projects. The funds raised will go towards some of the charity’s work educating disadvantaged children. Six-year-old David Radcliffe said: “It’s for charity, for children’s right to go to school in other countries.” Elizabeth Noble, five, said: “The plants are going to grow and then we’ll sell them for charity.” The pupils used their imaginations to transform unwanted household objects into pots and
planters for the greenery. Headteacher at Old Basing Infant School, Tracey McCarley, said: “We wanted to get involved because we wholeheartedly support UNICEF’s Day for Change. “Small things that we can do will really make a difference to children around the world.” The school used Hampshire’s recycled garden waste made at Herriard donated by waste and recycling company Veolia, and plants donated by Homebase and B&Q. for the project.
THE assistant Police and Crime Commissioner for the Isle of Wight announced she is to take on a county wide responsibility for safeguarding vulnerable residents living across Hampshire. Laura Franklin revealed she will take on the county-wide remit at the Crimestoppers Child Sexual Exploitation Conference at Sparsholt College in Winchester. She will be championing issues around missing people, child sexual exploitation, trafficking and modern slavery.

Trust receives £5,000 county council grant A CHARITY which cares for elderly and vulnerable people across Hampshire has been given a £5,000 grant. The Blue Lamp Trust was given the donation by Hampshire County Council. The money will support a project called the Bobby Scheme, which provides free home security and safety hardware to vulnerable residents. Door locks, chains, spyholes, bolts, window locks or glass alarms will be given out to about 500 residents. Council leader Roy Perry said: “Helping the elderly and vulnerable feel safe and secure in their homes is very much in line with our aim to help people retain their independence and wellbeing for as long as possible. “This support from the county council will help many more of the most vulnerable in our communities - giving them important peace of mind.” General Manager of the Blue Lamp Trust Bobby Scheme, Mark Bradford, said: “Support from the county council not only provides us with the money to buy hardware, it also gives us additional credibility with the business community, enabling us to approach them to secure further funding through sponsorship and donations so that homeowners can benefit from a free service. “We can also signpost clients to other services, allowing an early intervention to avoid more serious incidents occurring.”

Weed smelling post to raise drugs awareness RESIDENTS could get cannabis-smelling post dropped through their letterbox as part of a drug-awareness project launched today. Thousands of scratch cards with a sickly-sweet smell of weed will be sent to addresses across Basingstoke and Hampshire. The campaign, by Hampshire Police and charity Crimestoppers, is urging anyone who suspects criminal gangs to be growing a cannabis farm to report them. Hampshire Constabulary’s Detective Superintendent, Kath Barnes, said: “Cannabis is often seen as harmless and somehow acceptable. This is just not the case. “It’s harmful to use and many people including children, across the world, are exploited in furtherance of the cannabis trade.” The campaign targets gangs who rent domestic homes and turn them into cannabis factories by hijacking the electrical supply and stripping out all the rooms for plants. Police say they used trafficked people – many of them children – to work for them.

Founder and Chairman of Crimestoppers, Lord Ashcroft, said: “Quite often, those running cannabis cultivation operations are also involved in other serious and organised crime, such as human trafficking and possession of weapons.” It is being run with 17 other police forces for the second time after last year’s successes. More than 800 calls about cannabis crime were passed to law enforcement in the fi rst week – an increase of 59 per cent on the previous seven days. Crimestoppers director of operations Roger Critchell said: “This is a crime that can lead to much more serious incidents, which is why we feel it’s important to reinforce our appeal for information from the public. “We’re not looking to target individual users, we’re looking at something much bigger here, something much more dangerous, and we are targeting serious and organised crime groups who are involved in this illicit trade.” Crimestoppers is asking the public with information about cannabis farms to call them anonymously on 0800 555 111.

to serve 3,400 homes planned for Manydown in Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s revised Local Plan. NEWS Dawn’s first solo show 8IBUµT PO JO HAMPSHIRE
ACTRESS and comedian Dawn French discusses her life and career in her first ever solo tour coming to The Anvil on Wednesday. Dawn is well known for her performances as one half of French and Saunders and for playing Geraldine Granger in The Vicar of Dibley, in what has been an extensive and varied career. And she describes her tour ‘30 Million Minutes’ as a monologue of her life rather than a stand-up show or a play. “It’s a slide show to an extent, but not just a slide show,” said Dawn. “It’s not like your awful, most feared auntie who’s just come back from Egypt where you have to sit and watch everything. “It’s quite autobiographical, so I show you the people that have made me, so to speak. There’s quite a lot about my mum and dad.” The show is called ‘30 Million Minutes’ because that is roughly how long Dawn has lived for. It begins with Dawn talking about life growing up in Cornwall, her father’s suicide when she was 18, before start-

Dawn has worked with director Michael Grandage to create the show, who she has been wanting to work with for many years. “I could have asked Fatty Saunders, but I thought, ‘I’m actually going to ask a proper grown-up theatre person’,” Dawn added. “But I’ve always wanted to do this and I think I’ve dodged it a bit, because I’m aware that it’s a risk. “I keep saying to Michael, ‘I need to take this out’, and he says ‘absolutely not, do not push it away from you. A history of Shakespeare, told in less than two hours ALL 37 of Shakespeare’s plays will be told in just 97 minutes when the Reduced Shakespeare Company come to The Haymarket tomorrow. Three actors perform a segment from each piece of the Bard’s work, requiring quick costume changes and fast set turnarounds. The show currently holds the record for being the longest running comedy in the West End, and has been taken on tour around the world since the 1980s. Simon Cole is one of the actors in the show, and has been performing the complete works of Shakespeare for seven years. “It’s a great challenge, to say the very least,” he said. “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had on stage, and the audiences are fantastic because it’s been going so long, so we’ve had many people come back to see our shows. “There’s an issue that there’s a lot of female characters in the show, and we are three chaps, so it comes on me to play all the women. “I play Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Gertrude in Hamlet, so it means I have to wear a lot of dresses and a lot of wigs.” This incarnation of the show started

We get a lot of younger kids watch it, and they love all the dressing up and the props, and the great Shakespearians will get a lot of jokes the children don’t get. “We often say if you love Shakespeare, you’ll love the show, and if you hate Shakespeare, you’ll really love the show. Soul EV joins a host of models to win top environmental certificate
New Kia impresses at awards
THE all-new Kia Soul EV has proved to be a big hit, as the latest member of the Kia family has achieved a wholelife environmental certificate. The TÜV (Technischer Überwachungs-Verein or the Technical Inspection Association) were impressed with the safety features of the car, which is to prevent humans and the environment from potential hazards. The Soul EV now joins a list of Kia models to have the certificate, bringing the number of models to 11, since its fi rst LCA award back in 2008 to the Cee’d. The latest Kia model, achieved the award due to its environmental friendly use of materials, tailpipe emissions and recycling. When comparing the make to it’s diesel counterpart (which is currently on sale in some European countries), the all-new electric car scored impressively on its ‘Global Warming Potential’, emitting 39.7 per cent fewer greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, over the whole life of the vehicle. The Korean manufacturers have been known to produce many cars

that will benefit the environment, with every single Kia product since 2006 being made to suit the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) standards. Hence, why 11 of their models have won this award in the last six years. This more environmentally friendly development process covers five major steps: • Detailed physical analysis of the product during the development process to verify recyclability • Streamlining of the manufacturing process through improvements in use of materials and simplification of parts design • Use of eco-friendly materials • Utilisation of 3D drawings at the design stage to verify recyclability • Application of a check-sheet to evaluate the vehicle’s environmental credentials throughout its lifecycle The Soul EV, which has already been released in its native Korea, will be released in the UK later on this year. This car will also make American history, as it will be the fi rst ever car allelectric vehicle by Kia to be used in the United States when it is released • The new Kia Soul EV has been awarded a whole-life environmental certificate in August.

I took it to these guys for a remap and full exhaust in the hopes it would fi x it. It was better but Byron still thought it wasn’t right so spent another couple of hours diagnosing it! Sport ‘Stoke and North Hants continue run BASINGSTOKE and North Hants Cricket Club kept their unbeaten run going as they won by five wickets against Andover on Saturday. Hosts Andover had set a target of 249-5 for Basingstoke in their 50 overs, but the visitors were able to take victory and collect 19 points for their efforts. It means that Basingstoke stay in contention for the Southern Premier Cricket League Division One title, with just them and New Milton yet to lose this season. And it is New Milton who visit May’s Bounty this Saturday, in what could prove to be a crucial match in deciding the league winners. Elsewhere, Hook and Newnham Basics also had a good day, as they beat Hursley Park by 55 runs. Hook had set a target of 226-8, but bowled out the hosts for 171 to take the win. In Division Two, Hartley Wintney were able to beat Calmore Sports by 31 runs. Wintney posted 226-8 in their innings, with Calmore only able to reach 195-8 in reply. The women had successfully bid for a sailing trip in an auction raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support last autumn with Nick suggesting the race as the trip for them. And, while less than favourable weather conditions made for a long day on the water, Nick certainly enjoyed the experience. “I’d done it a few times, the fi rst time was about 25 years ago and I really enjoy it,” he said. “This year we had a different boat but it was still a lot of fun, the ladies made it very lighthearted in their sailing fancy dress outfits decked out as a mermaid, shark and crab.” Despite the minimal wind, the newly formed crew made the most of the experience, crossing the fi nish line in a time of 12hrs 03mins 04secs for 262nd place overall. A total of 1,584 boats started the race but only 717 successfully completed it in the less than favourable weather conditions, including five-time Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie. The J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race is the largest yacht race of its kind in the world. It regularly attracts around 1,500 boats and 16,000 competitors.

Golf tournament returns after eight-year hiatus WEYBROOK Park Golf Club’s Pro-Am tournament returned after an eight-year absence last week.
