PM ‘INVITED A CONVICT TO NUMBER 10’ Cameron ‘sorry’ after Coulson conviction WITNEY’S MP and Prime Minister was accused of bringing “a criminal to the heart of Downing Street” yesterday. Andy Coulson, David Cameron’s former director of communications, was found guilty of conspiring to hack phones earlier this week. Mr Cameron apologised on Tuesday and again during Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday, for employing Coulson between 2007 and 2011. The charges relate to when Coulson was editor of the News of the World. The prime minister said in parliament: “I take full responsibility for employing Andy Coulson. “ I am sorry this was the wrong decision. “Yesterday (Tuesday) once again showed that no one is above the law in our country.”

Mr Cameron was quizzed by opposition leader Ed Miliband in the House of Commons yesterday. The Labour leader said the PM “did not want to know” when it came to the evidence against Coulson. He continued: “We know that for four years the prime minister’s handpicked closest advisor was a criminal and brought disgrace to Downing Street. “The prime minister will always be remembered as being the fi rst ever occupant of his office who brought a criminal to the heart of Downing Street.” Mr Miliband said Mr Cameron ignored “multiple warnings” about Coulson and told MP’s that, on his appointment, the lat-

ter should have had “the highest level of security vetting”. However, Mr Cameron said Downing Street’s senior civil servant, Sir Jeremy Haywood, vetted Coulson. Mr Cameron told MP’s: “What the Right Honourable Gentleman (Mr Miliband) is trying to do is go through all of the questions that were answered by the Leveson Inquiry. “He did not like the answers because he wanted to try and prove some cooked up conspiracy between the Conservatives and News International.” Duncan Enright, Witney town councillor and Labour’s candidate for the Witney seat in next year’s general election, said Mr Cameron “clearly made a big mistake”. He added: “I think it shows a real lack of judgement. “It was really not a good move

on his part, and he has acknowledged that. “Residents will see this as a lack of judgement ent on Mr Cameron’s part where re he is favouring friendships ahead ead of his duty as .” prime minister.” Mayor of Witney itney Jeanette d to comment Baker declined when asked. And the PM came under fi re again yesterday erday when senior judge Mr Justice Saunders said Mr Cameron’s apology y was y” as “unsatisfactory” the trial is still ongoing. The jury has been discharged after fter ha failing to reach verdict on a sepaparate charge of cononspiracy to commit mit misconduct in n public office.

their windows and doors shut as a precaution. It was extinguished by 11pm, with fi re crews remaining at the site until 12noon the following day. Grundon managing director Clayton Sullivan-Webb said: “We would like to thank all the emergency services staff who attended the fi re for their constructive support and effective management of this incident. “We would also like to apologise to any local residents who may have been inconvenienced by the smoke. “This was mainly caused by burning plastic containers, solvent based paints, oily rags and aerosol cans. “It was a relatively small fi re which generated a lot of smoke. “We can confi rm no-one was injured during the fi re, which was contained in the reception area of the transfer station. “We will continue to work closely with the emergency services to confi rm the cause of the fi re and any necessary mitigation works on site.” The fi re came just two hours after a strike by fi refighters in Oxfordshire as part of a national dispute between the Fire Brigades Union and central government over pension reforms. It is believed to have started as a result of the warm weather and sunlight causing waste grease and oily rags to spontaneously ignite. Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s station manager Bob Speakman said: “The incident highlights the importance of safe disposal of items such as oily rags. “If stored in quantity in confi ned warm conditions, they have the potential to self-heat as they break down and ultimately can cause a fi re to start.” Grundon Waste Management has said that regular services have not been affected and will continue as normal.

It was the idea of Barbara Hickford, librarian at Our Lady’s Abingdon (OLA). She said: “OLA has always had strong ties to the local community, and this year is a really important time for us all to remember everyone who suffered during the war.” To take part in the read, go to http://bit.ly/1qDNPYF.

Date set for cooling towers demolition

THE date for the demolition of Didcot’s southern cooling towers has been revealed, but the exact time of the blow-down still remains a mystery. On Monday, energy company npower announced the three cooling towers to the south of the site would be demolished on

July 27. However, a specific time has not been revealed due to health and safety issues with npower only revealing that it will take

place during the “early morning. Spokeswoman Kelly Brown said npower “understand the public interest in the demolition of the power station, which has been in Didcot for the past 42 years. She said: “It is quite difficult

because there will be road closures and parking restrictions and an exclusion zone as it is an industrial process. “Within a minute they will be down and if things all go to plan we could open roads in less than an hour. The date and time of the demo-

Wantage and Grove drug dealer behind bars A DRUG dealer who covered Grove and Wantage has been jailed for more than four years. Carl Skelton, of Tubbs Close, Grove, was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court last Thursday after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply class A drugs. The 25-year-old was given a sentence of four-and–a-half years behind bars and a two-

year suspended sentence. Police raided homes in Blenheim Gardens in Grove on January 25 and Tubbs Close, Grove, on May 29 and found large amounts of cocaine. Local Policing Area Commander, Superintendent Andy Boyd, said: “This is an excellent result and a great deal of work has been done by officers to get this outcome. “Skelton was twice found to

be in possession with intent to supply class A drugs, and despite being charged for the fi rst offence, he went on to offend for a second time. “This long sentence should act as a reminder to potential offenders that we have zero tolerance approach to drugs offences and those who do offend will be dealt with robustly. Skelton was charged on March 12 and May 29.

lition was agreed among stakeholders, with the police, Health and Safety Executive, Network Rail and traffic management requesting it take place early on a Sunday morning. Ms Brown added: “This is just the fi rst milestone in the demolition of Didcot A power station but will be a significant change to the local landscape. “We understand that the power station has been part of the local community for over 42 years and for many people the demolition of these fi rst three cooling towers will mark a significant day for Didcot and Oxfordshire. However, Didcot Town Council leader Eleanor Hards, said having the demolition during the early hours will mean it will be “quite an effort for people to get up. She added: “People who are keen will make their way to wherever they think best. “Npower are obviously keen to dampen everything down and I suppose that is partly for safety reasons. “I think it is a shame that they haven’t tried to engage people rather than stifle it. The cooling towers have dominated the Didcot landscape for over 40 years. Cllr Hards added: “It will be a bit like losing a tooth, we will certainly be aware of the gap.

RAF officer helps train soldiers AN OFFICER stationed at RAF Benson has been praised for organising the first international tri-service training exercise in Norway. Flight Lieutenant Mark Garbett, 52, started planning Exercise Arctic Kite last October for troops from the Army and Royal Air Force. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Josh Florey feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Oxfordshire from their local depots and Josh is

Concerns raised on disability services A REPORT released today has criticised services for people with learning disabilities in Oxfordshire for failing to meet their needs. It comes following the death last year of 18-year-old Connor Sparrowhawk, who drowned in a bath after having a seizure. He was a resident at a shortterm treatment and assessment unit in Headington run by the Southern NHS Health Trust. The report by Healthwatch Oxfordshire and the Oxford Family Support Network (OFSN)

By Adam Flinn adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk

listed problems including the transition between children’s and adult services and issues with giving families enough information about which services to use. Plans to work on developing a peer-to-peer support network were recommended, and better communication with families. Jan Sunman, project worker from OFSN, said: “Our purpose

in writing this report was to give a voice to a very hidden group of families. “It was to show how they struggle with fragile support systems that need to radically change in order that they and their relatives can have a basic quality of life that the rest of us take for granted. “We are calling for significant improvements in the way that young people, like Connor, are supported. “We would also like to explore the idea of families who have

experienced such challenges being trained to support other families who are facing a similar situation.” Responding to the report, John Jackson, director of social and community services at Oxfordshire County Council, said: “We welcome this report by OFSN. “We are keen to work with the network, as well as Healthwatch Oxfordshire, to take forward their ideas as part of the commissioning work we are doing over the summer. “This will involve further dis-

cussions with families, carers, other organisations, and commissioners about improving services.” Lesley Munro, divisional director of the learning disability division at the Southern Health NHS Trust, said: “We welcome this report, and were very pleased to be able to provide a comment prior to publication. We will continue working with commissioners and relevant parties to deliver effective services.” To see the full report, go to healthwatchoxfordshire.co.uk.

He said: “It’s an opportunity to do a bit of future-proofi ng as well as general maintenance and bringing roads to a slightly better standard. “But it’s going to cost a lot more than £3.1m to bring the roads up to a standard people expect, which is motorway standard,” he continued. When asked how much was needed to bring Oxfordshire’s roads up to a level the council wanted, Mr Nimmo Smith added: “We did a rough estimate, and we reckon £160m, just for Oxfordshire. “To be honest, all the money that the government was making available for all of England, we reckon we could have done with all of it!” • Prime Minister David Cameron (left) visited Oxfordshire earlier this year to see the extent of potholes in the county

FOUR community projects based in Oxfordshire have received grants of up to £2,500 as part of an Oxford University funding initiative. The Osney Lock Hydro scheme, Oxfordshire Play Association, Alice’s Day 2014 and Cowley News were selected for grants in the university’s Community Fund. The fund is a small community grants scheme that was set up by the university last year. It has so far given money to groups including Oxford Open Doors, the Pegasus Theatre and Cowley Road Carnival, as well as the latest announcements. A total of £2,500 was given to the development of the Osney Lock Hydro group, which is building Oxfordshire’s fi rst community hydro scheme in the Thames at Osney Lock. Saskya Huggins, director of Osney Lock Hydro, said: “We are thrilled to have received a grant from Oxford University. “As well as generating renewable energy, the project offers a platform from which we can tell the story of our river.” Alice’s Day 2014, a project coordinated by the Story Museum, in Pembroke Street, has been

‘Dedicated’ anti-child exploitation team honoured A JOINT team that was set up to tackle child sexual exploitation following the Operation Bullfinch case has been presented with a prestigious national award. The Kingfisher team was chosen as the winner of the children’s services award at a ceremony hosted by local government trade magazine Municipal Journal (MJ). Around 20 people from Thames Valley Police and Oxfordshire County Council make up the team, which is based at Cowley police station. They work closely with potential victims to investigate and detect crime, and were honoured at the MJ awards for being “an innovative and committed team”. Melinda Tilley, the county council’s cabinet member for children, education and families, was pleased with the news. She said: “The Kingfisher team involves staff from Thames Valley Police and Oxfordshire County Council’s social care teams working closely together with social workers. “Professionals from other agencies, including health, also have an important presence,” she added. “By working side by side in

this way, Oxfordshire is well placed to combat and disrupt those who abuse and sexually exploit young people. “They are dedicated professionals with a determination to protect young people. “This award is due recognition for their efforts, and their work will continue.” The team was set up in November 2012, after investigations into the Bullfi nch case had begun a year earlier. Det Insp Laura MacInnes, from Thames Valley Police, said: “We are very pleased that the Kingfisher team has been recognised in winning this award. She continued: “The strength of this team is in the co-location and the ability to share information with partners really quickly to achieve the best results for children.” The award comes as six men were arrested in Banbury on Tuesday in relation to information about child sexual exploitation gathered by the Kingfisher Team.

‘Best achieving’ Oxford City Council recognised for its improved performance OXFORD City Council also received recognition at the MJ Awards, as it was named as the Best Achieving Council in the UK. The authority was praised for its performance improvement, as it beat off competition from the highly commended Buckinghamshire County Council authority at the ceremony, held last week. Bob Price, Labour party councillor and leader of the city council, said: “Winning this top award is a massive tribute to everyone who works for the council, and for our many partners. “On behalf of all councillors, I would like to thank all the staff for their personal contribution to the achievement of the high quality services that we are delivering to the people of the

city,” he continued. “The award reflects our achievements over the past few years – now we must build on those fi rm foundations and make Oxford an even better place to live and work.” Peter Solman, the council’s chief executive, added: “Oxford City Council has won the most important award at the local government Oscars. “Oxford is now seen as one of the best councils nationally, and I would like to thank everyone for their hard work in achieving this.” Last Thursday’s ceremony was the 11th staging of the MJ awards, with previous winners for Best Achieving Council including Derby City Council, Sunderland City Council and London Borough of Harrow in recent years.

There could well be a cure in the next decade or so, and for those younger people with Parkinson’s, they’ll get their life and their future back. “I think that’s a good reason to row any ocean.” Darren had been due to complete the race with Alex as a pair, but funding problems meant they had to delay their attempt until next year. Harry is new mock mayor at fifth try By Adam Flinn adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk

OCK Street has a new mayor after seven years, as Abingdon resident Harry Knight beat the incumbent Roger Cox by 95 votes to 67 on Saturday. Dozens of people gathered outside the Brewery Tap pub for the result, which was announced by Abingdon’s town mayor Angela Lawrence. Harry was then carried aloft by members of the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers down Ock Street to celebrate his success. Only residents and business owners living on or adjacent to Ock Street were allowed to vote for the mock mayor – a tradition that goes back hundreds of years in Abingdon. This was the fi fth time that Harry, 62, had stood for the mayorship, which had been held by Roger, 65, since 2007. “I was very surprised,” said Harry. “Roger was our mayor for seven years and I expected him to get back in again, so it came as a bit of a shock actually. “Abingdon has a long tradition of mock mayors, and I’ve just been fortunate enough to be nominated. “We’ve been carrying on this tradition for hundreds of years, and it’s both an honour and a privilege to be chosen. “Roger is a very popular man, and he will stand

Abandoned foal nursed to health after rescue A HORSE that made a miraculous recovery after being found starving and infested with lice in a Banbury field is looking for a new home. Nine-month-old Magpie was discovered by RSPCA officers in March last year, and was in such a poor state of health that vets feared she would not survive. But after six months of treatment, Magpie is now fully healthy, and the RSPCA are now looking to fi nd her a new family. “Even though Magpie was found collapsed and emaciated, she had a will for life and fought with all she had,” said Claudia Corner, equine rehoming officer with the RSPCA. “She made it and is now back to

AMERICAN indie rock band Parquet Courts come to Oxford’s O2 Academy this evening, following the release of their third album ‘Sunbathing Animal’. Blithe Spirit

AN evening of comedy and theatre set at a 1920s dinner party comes to the Old Fire Station in Oxford from today. Blithe Spirit tells the story of Charles Condomine, who is stuck between two married women who are both used to getting their own way. It runs until Saturday, and more information can be found at oldfirestation.org.uk.

“It’s quite autobiographical, so I show you the people that have made me, so to speak. “There’s quite a lot about my mum and dad.” The show is called ’30 Million Minutes’ because that is roughly how long Dawn has lived for. It begins with Dawn talking about life growing up in Cornwall, her father’s suicide when she was 18, before starting stage school and meeting doubleact partner Jennifer Saunders. Dawn has worked with director Michael Grandage to create the show, who she has been wanting to work with for many years. “I could have asked Fatty Saunders, but I thought, ‘I’m actually going to ask a proper grown-up theatre person,” Dawn added. “But I’ve always wanted to do this and I think I’ve dodged it a bit, because I’m aware that it’s a risk. “I keep saying to Michael, ‘I need to take this out’, and he says ‘absolutely not, do not push it away from you. Own it and be confident about that’, so that’s what I’ve done.” Dawn’s show starts at 7.30pm. ANGELINA Ballerina pirouettes onto the Oxford New Theatre stage next week, with a brand new stage show written and performed especially for children. Full of music and singing, The Mousical sees Angelina and her friends given the chance to appear in their favourite television programme ‘Dancing With Mice’.

“The response has been brilliant, said Miranda Larson, writer and director of the show. adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk “Most importantly for me is what the children think of it, and I’m But they struggle to decide what to always amazed that children manage perform as everyone has a mix of ideas to dance in the aisles while following for the show, and it’s up to Angelina to the story. make sure that everything goes ahead “I think we’re all really proud of what smoothly. it’s achieved so far, and hopefully we

will achieve a bit more yet.â€? The stage show is based off the latest Angelina Ballerina television series, although it still draws inspiration from the books as well. Angelina has proven popular since she was fi rst created by author Katharine Holabird in the 1980s, with the latest series of the television show featuring 40 episodes. Speaking about the show’s popularity, Miranda added: “The age of the characters on screen is seven-yearsold, so for that younger audience, it’s aspirational but at the same time going through things the children go through. “But in the backdrop of that, it’s also about expressing yourself, hard work, and having a go. “This show’s not just ballet either, we’ve got a lot of contemporary styles as well, including jazz, tap and hip hop as well as the ballet. “We always invite the audience to get up and dance along with the cast, and just have fun really.â€? The fi rst show is at 4.30pm on Monday, with three further performances on Tuesday. ANHSO - OCEAN CIRCULATION AND CLIMATE - DR RENSKE GELDERLOOS “The ocean plays a very important role in the Earth’s climate system through storage and transport of heat, fresh water, and carbon. Dr Gelderloos will discuss the principle ocean circulation patterns and how they affect well known climatic phenomena such as El Niño and the hydrological cycle. Furthermore, as increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere affect the circulation in the ocean, this will feed back onto the climate system. Based on what we know about how the oceans affect the Earth’s climate, what changes may we expect? Dr Gelderloos is a physical oceanographer interested in subpolar and polar oceans. After specializing in fluid dynamics during a BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering at the University of Twente (Netherlands), she studied deep water formation in the Labrador Sea at KNMI/University of Utrecht for her PhD. publicity@ anhso.org.uk http://www.anhso. org.uk/ 1 Jul 2014 - 3 Jul 2014, 9pm Burton Taylor Studio

Soul EV joins a host of models to win top environmental certificate

New Kia impresses at awards

THE all-new Kia Soul EV has proved to be a big hit, as the latest member of the Kia family has achieved a wholelife environmental certificate. The TÜV (Technischer Überwachungs-Verein or the Technical Inspection Association) were impressed with the safety features of the car, which is to prevent humans and the environment from potential hazards. The Soul EV now joins a list of Kia models to have the certificate, bringing the number of models to 11, since its fi rst LCA award back in 2008 to the Cee’d. The latest Kia model, achieved the award due to its environmental friendly use of materials, tailpipe emissions and recycling. When comparing the make to it’s diesel counterpart (which is currently on sale in some European countries), the all-new electric car scored impressively on its ‘Global Warming Potential’, emitting 39.7 per cent fewer greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, over the whole life of the vehicle. The Korean manufacturers have been known to produce many cars

that will benefit the environment, with every single Kia product since 2006 being made to suit the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) standards. Hence, why 11 of their models have won this award in the last six years. This more environmentally friendly development process covers five major steps: • Detailed physical analysis of the product during the development process to verify recyclability • Streamlining of the manufacturing process through improvements in use of materials and simplification of parts design • Use of eco-friendly materials • Utilisation of 3D drawings at the design stage to verify recyclability • Application of a check-sheet to evaluate the vehicle’s environmental credentials throughout its lifecycle The Soul EV, which has already been released in its native Korea, will be released in the UK later on this year. This car will also make American history, as it will be the fi rst ever car allelectric vehicle by Kia to be used in the United States when it is released • The new Kia Soul EV has been awarded a whole-life environmental certificate in August.

LONDON Welsh’s week in Singapore ended with a sixth-place finish at the inaugural World Club 10s, with two wins and four defeats. Welsh were the sole English representatives in the eightteam competition, which also included French squad Biarritz Olympique and eventual tournament winners The Blues from New Zealand. Day one of the competition on Saturday got off to the worst possible start for Welsh, as they were thrashed 26-0 by Samoa Water President 10. They recovered well to beat Biarritz 26-5 in their second match, before a 27-7 loss to The Blues meant The Exiles fi nished third in Pool A. This set up a quarter fi nal clash with South Pacific side The Dragons on Sunday, but Welsh were beaten 43-12. Losing quarter-fi nalists then faced each other for the Plate, with Welsh winning their semifi nal fi xture against Italy’s Petrarca Rugby, for a rematch with Samoa Water President in the fi nal. But despite a better showing it was not to be for Welsh, as they lost 28-14 for a sixth-place

Burnell adds to Exiles’ squad FORMER England under-20 hooker Koree Britton and experienced centre Tim Molenaar have been named as the latest signings to join London Welsh. Britton was a member of the side which won the 2011 Six Nations Grand Slam and the 2012 Six Nations title at under-20 level, also featuring in the Junior World Cups of the same years. The 22-year-old ended last season with Northampton Saints, where he made one Premiership appearance as a replacement in their 74-13 win over London Wasps. And Molenaar, 33, joins Welsh from Harlequins, making 19 appearances for the side last season. He was part of the Gloucester squad that lifted the LV= Cup in

2011 and reached the Premiership play-offs in 2010/11. Exiles’ head coach Justin Burnell said: “Koree will add some serious competition to an already talented group of hookers. “He brings Premiership experience and has the size and physicality we are looking for in building our squad of forwards,â€? he continued. “Tim is another player with a lot of Premiership experience that we had targeted. “He will provide a physicality that will complement our other centres and give us various combinations in the midfield.â€? • Head coach Justin Burnell has brought in Koree Britton and Tim Molenaar (Picture by Martin John)

Bronze for Katie at World Rowing Cup OXFORD rower Katie Greves secured a bronze at the World Rowing Cup II in France last weekend, as the GB team finished top of the medal table. Greves was part of the women’s eight that took silver in Belgrade at the European Rowing Championships earlier this year. She kept her seat for the weekend at Aiguebelette, alongside Rosamund Bradbury, Zoe Lee, Donna Etiebet, Jess Eddie, Caragh McMurty and cox Zoe de Toledo. They got off to a strong start and battled with China throughout the race for third position, eventually beating them by just

over a tenth of a second. “We were very pleased to get a good start but perhaps our rhythm wasn’t as good as in Belgrade,” said Greves. “It’s a bit frustrating as we know that we can do better than that in the middle of the race.” Fellow Oxford rower Frances Houghton had a tougher time at the competition, as she and double sculls partner Vicky Thornley could only fi nish fi fth. At the halfway stage they had been sitting fourth and challeng-

ing for the bronze medal position, before dropping back as the fi nal sprint moved away. And another city rower, Olivia Carnegie-Brown, also came home fi fth with partner Monica Relph in their B fi nal of the pairs, fi nishing 16 seconds behind winners New Zealand. GB Rowing Team performance director Sir David Tanner said: “Our rowers have really stepped up for the fi nals day. “There were some really impressive medals showing how savvy our team is.” • Katie Greves (top row, third from left) with her squad (Picture by Peter Spurrier)

OXFORD-BASED racing driver Jason Plato will be hoping to get back into title contention, as the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) heads to Croft this weekend. Plato is currently fourth in the standings, 36 points behind series leader Colin Turkington. After a promising start to the year which saw a win and three podiums in the fi rst six races, Plato’s performance has tailed off, with just one top-three result since. But Plato is optimistic he can turn his fortunes around in North Yorkshire, where he

EIGHT Oxford United scholars reported for their first day of training earlier this week, as they hope to break into the professional ranks. Centre-back Cian McCormack, midfielders Seth Humphries and Kieran Andrews, and forwards George Jeacock and Luke Hastings have made the step up from last season’s under-16s. And defender Drew Ricketts joins from Walsall, while rightback Miles Welch-Hayes and

midfielder Lewis Hayden were given the opportunity after impressing in the under-17 Academy side. They join second year scholars Eddie Cavanagh, Freddie Grant, Robbie Cundy, AJ George and Muctaru Conte in the squad for this season. “It’s an exciting day for all of them,” said youth team coach Chris Allen. “They are within touching distance of being professional footballers but now

they have to work harder than ever before to impress us. “It’s about ability and desire but also attitude, intelligence and having that bit of self-belief to push on. “Every single one of them now has a wonderful opportunity to make their dreams come true and become professional footballers.” • The latest intake of scholars at Oxford United

ABINGDON golfer Eddie Pepperell had a disappointing Irish Open last week, as he missed the cut to finish in a tie for 112th. Rounds of 72 and 74 left Pepperell four over par for the tournament, four shots off what was needed to make the weekend’s play. It comes after Pepperell equalled his best result on the European Tour earlier this month at the Nordea Masters, where he fi nished in a tie for sixth.

traditionally gets a lot of support after growing up in nearby Newcastle. “I think we stand a good chance this weekend,” said Plato. “I’ve been lucky to get good support there in the past. “It’s great to see so many fans at any race, but at Croft they turn up in their tens of thousands. “It has historically been a good stomping ground for the rear wheel drive cars, but with Turkington on maximum ballast, that could level things.” • Jason Plato (Picture courtesy of btcc.net)

OXFORD Rugby League lost a fifth consecutive match on Sunday, as they were defeated 36-20 away to University of Gloucester All Golds. The results puts Oxford second bottom in the standings with 13 points, level with London Skolars who have a game in hand. They will be hoping for a return to winning ways when they host Oldham this Sunday.

Barcelos back FORMER Oxford City striker Felipe Barcelos has rejoined the club, after a spell at Italian Serie D side ASD Santhià Calcio. Barcelos made 125 appearances and scored 42 goals for City over five years, before leaving for Italy 12 months ago. City have also announced their fi rst four friendlies, as they face Oxford United at home on July 15, before trips to Wantage Town, Didcot Town and ChippenhamTown on July 19, 22 and 26 respectively.

MotoGP’s Smith wants to put bad luck behind him BRADLEY Smith will be hoping for better performance this weekend, as he heads to the Netherlands for round eight of the MotoGP championship at Assen. Smith has only been able to record a best fi nish of 10th in the last three races, and has dropped to 10th in the championship standings. This is despite a promising start to the season, which saw Smith running in the lead of the fi rst race at Qatar, and coming fi fth at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. But he will be hopeful of a strong race, after coming second at a mid-season test at Catalunya following the last race. “It’s safe to say that the past five rounds really haven’t been how I would have imagined them,” said Smith. “My lack of luck in the past races has made things challenging, but I am certain my fortunes will turn around this week in Assen.

“I aim to fully ensure that we have a positive weekend, especially in front of the Dutch and English fans who are brilliant and truly love our sport coming to their country.”

No points for Maldonado, but Lotus F1 driver remains positive

PASTOR HAPPY AFTER AUSTRIA

• Pastor Maldonado at Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix (Picture courtesy of Lotus F1) LOTUS F1 driver Pastor Maldonado was upbeat following Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, despite finishing outside the points in 12th. The Venezuelan started 13th, and despite a poor start was able to make up ground in the fi rst round of pitstops, spending the last 30 laps in his fi nishing position. Braking issues throughout the race meant he wasn’t able to progress any higher, but he was positive about the

car for future races. “For me in the car, it was actually quite a good weekend,” said Maldonado. “We fi nished the race and made the most of the package we had today. “We are losing a lot of time in the slow speed corners and we need to

keep improving in this area to be more like our good high speed corner performance. “Unfortunately we had some brake issues from very early on in the race, so I wasn’t able to fight others around me, and after that it was a case of saving fuel and brakes to get to the chequered flag.” Romain Grosjean was less happy with his weekend, with the Frenchman fi nishing 14th after starting from

the pitlane. He said: “We had various issues during the race to add to our struggle for overall performance. “We stopped very early for soft tyres but unfortunately we soon experienced graining from these, which made it difficult for the rest of the race. “Looking at the past, the team has always managed to make a great comeback, and I know that we will work hard and fight back.”

Leafield-based Caterham enjoyed a slightly improved performance at Austria, as both Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson made it to the end of the race. Kobayashi battled with the Marussia of Jules Bianchi for much of the race, fi nishing 16th and head of Bianchi’s team-mate Max Chilton. Ericsson had a quieter race to come home 18th, one place ahead of Esteban Gutierrez’s Sauber.
