FLOODS WON’T DAMPEN SPIRIT Communities hailed after show of strength against rising waters COMMUNITIES in Basingstoke devastated by flooding have been hailed for the tremendous spirit they have shown in helping each other in a time of crisis. Buckskin is one of the borough’s worst hit areas, with nearly 20 homes having to be evacuated and many more under threat. And the forecast for the next few days shows no sign of letting up, with high winds and heavy rain predicted. The streets primarily affected are Antrim Close, Sperrin Close, Grampian Way, Bodmin Close and Exmoor Close. Warnings have also been issued for Overton and Whitchurch. David Parker, 19, and his parents have been forced to move out of the house they have lived in for the last 14 years. “All the water has come up through the property, the front room’s gone, the kitchen’s gone, the hallway’s full of water – the

whole house has just gone,” said David. “This has never happened before. The water is coming up through the floors. It’s quite high at the moment and it’s probably going to get worse.” On Tuesday, they moved into housing offered by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC). David does not know when he and his parents will be able to move back in, but estimated it could be months. He did praise the borough council for its work, and hailed the spirit of people in the area. “The council have been really good, the spirit has been very good – we’re all helping each other out,” he said. A temporary flood help zone has been set up at the community’s Ridgeway Centre, and four tankers are working 24 hours a day to pump water out of the affected areas. • Continued on page 2

AA building - 40 years after being opened by the Queen
HOUSE PARTY! By James Booker news@basingstokeobserver.co.uk
A FAMILIAR part of the Basingstoke landscape has celebrated its 40th birthday this week. Fanum House, the Basingstoke headquarters of the AA, was opened by the Queen on November 19, 1973. The ÂŁ4.5million building, which is the second-tallest in Basingstoke, stands at 18 storeys (274 feet), and is recognisable for its distinctive net of aluminium ďŹ ns. Fanum House currently houses 936 workers, and was the original shift in AA headquarters after they moved out of their Leicester Square building. And staff have fond memories of the historic day. Jan Archer, AA ďŹ nance administrator, said: “The day before we were told that the Queen would be visiting our ofďŹ ce to see the membership records of other members of the Royal Family. “We were also shown the correct way to curtsey and had to keep • Continued on page 2

Pulling together to fight the floods • From front page However, despite being able to take around 25,000 litres of water at once, battling the persistent rain is proving a daunting task. And due to overflowing sewage after flooded drains, the water is contaminated, meaning it needs to be disposed at the sewage site in Chineham. Cllr Robert Taylor, BDBC ward member for Buckskin, said: “We have residents putting sandbags down for their neighbours. Everybody has rallied round – there’s a terrific community spirit. “And the spirit of the residents who are going through a terrible tragedy are so positive – they’re being very philosophical about

it. Some people aren’t insured, and they face serious problems down the line. Fellow BDBC ward member Tony Jones added: “People around are responding extremely well. The community centre is open. You have got volunteers who don’t live that close, who live on the other side of the estate, coming in and helping everybody. Basingstoke MP Maria Miller has been at the centre, and paid tribute to those working to
support those affected, as well promising flood help victims are a priority. “The priority right now is to ensure that those people affected by the flooding have somewhere to move to and that everything is done to support them at this very difficult time, she said. The area’s county councillor, Stephen Reid, added: “It is really sad to see people’s flooded homes, and the focus is rightly on giving help to affected residents in Buckskin, both those who have already had to evacuate their home as well as those whose homes are at risk. Hampshire County Council (HCC) said it has delivered
over 35,000 sandbags around the county, and have pledged to keep supporting the plight. Cllr Sean Woodward, HCC executive member for Transport, said: “We have deployed all the resources we have in tackling this flooding across Hampshire, with hundreds of staff working round the clock. The county’s fi re service are also distributing carbon monoxide detectors to provide warning of potential build-up of the gas. Assistant chief officer Neil Odin said: “Anything powered by petrol or diesel can emit CO in its exhaust gases and so we are making communities aware of the potential dangers.
Odiham school takes top spot on podium AN ODIHAM School put in a strong showing in the London and South East F1 in Schools regional final, in the competition for school children to design and create their own scale model racing car. Robert Mays School took home a number of trophies, with their Colossus F1 team taking the runner up place in the F1 class, and Team Venom winning the Bloodhound class. It means that the school will now be preparing for the national fi nals in Birmingham next month, which could ultimately lead them to the world fi nals in Abu Dhabi in November.
Colussus F1 team manager Victoria Waterfield, 16, said: “The day went really well for us and we’re looking forward to the nationals. “We need to focus on our car now and making sure to meet the regulations, and we’ll be working on developing our car to be ready for March. Andrew Denford, founder and chairman of F1 in Schools, said: “All the students put so much time, work and commitment into the competition and show just how much can be achieved.
Top of the Town views are sought CAR parks behind the Top of the Town could be turned into squares of specialist shops and restaurants, in plans being considered by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC). The council has been speaking to traders and organisations in the Top of the Town about the proposals, and is now inviting the public to comment on a potential 20-year vision for the area. Known as the ‘Concept Masterplan’, the vision aims to make improvements to the area and attract more shoppers to the town centre. BDBC deputy leader Cllr Ranil Jayawardena said: “It is essential that we develop an idea of what kind of place we want the Top of the Town to be. “We will consider how this will fit with the rest of the town’s success, including Festival Place, The Malls and Basing View. “Getting views from local residents and visitors of Basingstoke on this is an essential part of the process. I would strongly encourage everyone to have their say to help us shape the plans for the future. The consultation ends on March 7. Anyone wishing to comment on the proposals can go to www.basingstoke. gov.uk /go/towncentrevision.

Care home scores highly on residents survey

A BASINGSTOKE care home is celebrating after a recent survey found it to have excellent resident satisfaction rates. Pemberley House Care Home on Grove Road, came out with an overall performance rating (OPR) of 860 out of 1,000 in the nationwide Your Care Rating survey. Your Care Rating, is designed to give residents a voice, putting their care at the heart of understanding more about how well care homes perform. Over 20,000 residents in 1,055 care homes across the UK took
part, providing feedback on a range of categories, across four broad Themes; Staff and Care, Home Comforts, Choice and Having a Say, and Quality of Life. The OPR score is an overall score based on the results across the four Themes. Pemberley House achieved scores of 887 for Quality of Life and 869 for Home Comforts, meaning the residents of Pemberley House highly rate the standard of care they receive for Quality of Life and Home Comforts. Annie Lewis, Home Manager at Pemberley House, said: “We’re
delighted with our results from the 2013 Your Care Rating survey as it demonstrates how fulfi lled our residents are. “All of our scores across the four main themes are high and it just goes to show that the reality of day-to-day life in a care home such as ours is very good, something which is often at odds with the public’s perception. “That said, we still want to get even better and the results give us crucial feedback.â€? • Cllr Dan Putty opens the home last year

Residents angry over bus route alterations BASINGSTOKE residents angered by changes in bus timetables have spoken out about their fury. Last month, Stagecoach announced a major shake-up of its services to a number of areas in and out of Basingstoke. Oakley residents and councillors have been particularly displeased with the overhaul, which has seen the jazz 8 bus route changed and service cut from every half-hour to every hour. Anne Gray, who lives in the area, said: “I rely on the buses completely to do my shopping, get into town, meet friends as well as getting my six month old to his jab appointments and baby classes. “The reduction in service for the village is going to be a nightmare for us. The reason we decided to move to Oakley was the regular half hourly bus service.” Councillor Diane Taylor, ward member for Oakley and North Waltham, said: “Stagecoach is, of course, a business and is therefore driven by fi nance and so is not constrained by inconvenience to customers. “The Oakley service, which currently runs at a loss, will only fall further as people feel that they have no choice but to fi nd alternative ways of getting into town.” Brighton Hill is another area affected – with the number 1 service now a shorter route every eight minutes, and a new 12 service in place between Brighton Hill and Hatch Warren. However, there is no more direct link to Wade Road and Chineham. Resident Joe Henry branded the changes “a tragedy for the town”. “My real concern is for those who are old, vulnerable or are dependent on using the buses,” he added. Mr Henry also called on Hampshire County Council to up its efforts to save the route.

Cllr Anna McNair Scott, HCC ward member for Candovers, said: “I am aware of how Stagecoach’s changes of service are affecting people. We don’t have much influence but I’ll have a go.” Andrew Dyer, managing director of Stagecoach South, said the situation was regrettable, and there would be losers as well as winners’ when this type of change happens. “What we’ve done is a very detailed exercise to map the demand for our services with the resources that we put in to run them. “And the result is overall we genuinely believe the majority of people in Basingstoke will have a better bus service. “Of course when you do a wideranging review like this, there are almost inevitably some losers as well as some winners. “And that we regret but it’s a fi nancial imperative for our bus service to be fi nancially viable.” The company has also been criticised for perceived lack of consultation with residents. Cllr Carolyn Wooldridge, BDBC ward member for Brighton Hill North, said: “Stagecoach would have been better consulting on these fi nalised proposals given the radical nature of them rather than announcing them in the way they have. Several residents have already been in contact with me to say they have not been consulted and I can see why they feel that way.” Mr Dyer said the company did not want to instill fear into the public consciousness when there was no confi rmation the changes would happen. However, he did add things could have been handled “better” when the plans were at fi nal draft stage. The changes will come into force from Sunday. For more information on the new routes, visit the Stagecoach website.

Duty Calls for police band as force marks 175 years in service THE Band of the Hampshire Constabulary have released a new album, titled “Duty Calls”, marking 175 years of public service by the force. The record is £10 of which £1 will be given to COPS UK (Care of Police Survivors UK), a registered charity, which supports the families of those members of the police, across the UK, who have died in the line of duty. Other profits from the sale will go towards the running costs of the band. The Band’s Director of Music, Major Pete Curtis MBE RM, said: “The Hampshire Constabulary Band are a superb group of people and the dedication they show to representing the force through the medium of music is just remarkable. “Their collective enthusiasm and passion for music is reflected throughout this new CD. The quality of the playing is excellent with some outstanding solo contributions, and they really have a brilliant product that they should be very pleased with. “The fact that it will also raise a significant sum of money for ‘COPS UK,’ the charity that directly supports families of those police officers and police workers

Concerns over solar farm’s visual impact RESIDENTS of an area near a proposed solar farm in Overton remain concerned about the impact it will have on the landscape. Plans went on display at Overton Community Centre last week for the proposed solar farm at Court Drove. Around 100 people attended the consultation, and feedback indicated that most were in favour of proposals for an increase of solar energy. However, people remain worried that the site, if approved, could be an eyesore for the surrounding area. Councillor Paula Baker, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s ward member for Overton, admitted to having “confl icting feelings” on the plans. “I am waiting to see the fi nal planning application and to hear the advice of the borough’s landscape impact assessment of it before making my mind up,” she said. “However, I fi nd I have confl icting feelings about the proposal – we urgently need to do something to generate electricity more locally and from renewable energy sources, but high grade farm land is needed to support the rural economy. “This site is close to houses and the well-used Harroway and is likely to be visible from the south
Body found on tower block balcony THE body of a woman was found on a balcony of a Basingstoke tower block on Monday morning. Police were called out to attend Crown Heights in Alencon Link at 8.45am that morning. Churchill Way up to Eastrop roundabout was closed by police while the incident was being dealt with. The footpath connecting Crown Height to the bus station was also shut for a few hours. Both the footpath and the roads were reopened at 12 noon. At time of print, police were treating the cause of her death as unexplained.

western part of the village. “It would seem to be more sustainable to use our roofs for solar rather than our “best and most versatile” agricultural land.” Fellow BDBC ward member Cllr Ian Tilbury added: “Given the size and industrial nature of the proposal, it is hardly something you would wish to see at the end of your garden. I am sure there are far more suitable sites out of public view, or even better on the roofs of existing buildings.” Developers Belectric and Luminous Energy said only six people had objected in the feedback forms they provided at the consultation, with 40 in favour of the plans. A spokesman for the company said: “The main concern raised by residents was to do with the potential visual impact of the solar farm. “Whilst the site is generally well screened by existing hedgerows and trees, we intend to plant new hedgerows around some of the margins of the solar farm and also bulk up gaps in existing hedgerows.” BLE plan to submit a planning application by the end of the month.

Geared up for the Basingstoke Gang Show THE gang is in town today and for the next eight days as the Basingstoke Gang Show returns. The show started in 1980, and now puts on a show every two years at the Haymarket Theatre. It is the 21st show held since its inauguration. The show is made up of around 70 cubs, scouts, guides, explorers and young leaders from in and
around the Basingstoke area. “As I look back to when it all started in 1980, this show feels like a real ‘coming of age,” said chairman Steve Edney. “Our bi-annual variety show has a cast made up entirely from local Cubs, Scouts, Guides, Explorers and Young Leaders within our local community. “We have a reputation for being the leading Gang Show
within the UK, have won a host of national awards and played at the O2 arena and The Royal Albert Hall. “Whilst supporting the aims of the Scout and Guide Associations, Basingstoke Gang Show provides a great environment to nurture our young talent across the three districts of Basingstoke East, Basingstoke West and Silchester.”

County council to boost local economy by £668.7million New bus routes & timetables from
16th February 2014
HAMPSHIRE County Council are set to plough over two-thirds of a billion pounds into the county’s economy. The £668.7million investment is set to be the largest capital investment of all county authorities in the south east. Improvements to roads and bridges are a main priority, with £130m of the money going into their maintenance - £6m more than last time. Council leader Roy Perry has called on Whitehall to make grant calculations much clearer. Cllr Perry added: “I think there needs to be much more clarity from Government about how these grant formulae are calculated. “However I am pleased that representations the Council and I personally have made to Government...

that we have got some extra help.” “This budget provides a record [amount of money] into the fabric of Hampshire communities, creating growth and a level of investment that will create hundreds of private sector jobs from construction, to maintenance and supplies. “All this while residents will still be paying the lowest for services like social care, schools, highways and libraries than anywhere else in the South East – and with no increase for the last four years. “Despite needing to make over £230m savings, we are adding to the budget for adult care, safeguarding the expenditure on the most vulnerable children. “And, thanks to our lobbying through the county councils network, will be using funding government has made available through the New Homes Bonus to continue
our investment into the long-term condition of Hampshire’s roads.” The council are also dedicating £20m towards improving broadband for residents, and hope ‘thousands of quality school places’ will be developed from the funds. The government grant for Hampshire in 2014/15 will be £116 per head. The budget proposals will now be recommended to the full council on February 20. Cllr Perry added: “Hampshire has been sensible and realistic. We’ve managed the budget in a planned way to give us the time to reshape the way that services are provided, working in new ways to deliver the same quality services, or better in some cases, with less money, thus reducing pressures on frontline services. “By starting our efficiency work early we have released money to invest; broadband is one example. “Our aim is to maintain the best local services while living within our means.”

ANVIL Arts held auditions this month to find a local dog to star in the up and coming production of La Boheme. International soloists have been selected from across the world to join the Chisinau National Opera, but opera director and producer Ellen Kent wanted to look nearer to home to cast the role of Musetta’s pet dog. Ellen said: “The dog is central – it lifts the whole scene and brings it to life. It gives the scene a sense of reality and makes it sparkle”. Andrea Bath at The Anvil added: “We were very pleased with the turnout at the auditions.
“All the dogs were so talented and it was very hard to make a decision. We fi nally chose Mystique, a yorkie/cairn terrier cross who is eight years old and owned by Lesley Diamond from Basingstoke, as our winner. Puccini’s tale tells the tragic story of hopeless love between the doomed Mimi and penniless writer Rodolfo, and includes the famous arias Your Tiny Hand Is Frozen, They call Me Mimi and Musetta’s Waltz. La Boheme is at The Anvil on Sunday. See the Anvil Arts website or call the box office on 01256 844244. • Lesley Diamond and Mystique

HAMPSHIRE’S Police and Crime Commissioner, has pledged more support to protect the residents of Basingstoke and Hampshire from drug-related violence. Simon Hayes made the announcement last week, where he committed a further ÂŁ1.77m towards Operation Fortress. Fortress was launched in 2012 following an initial ÂŁ2m investment, and the new funds will be available in April. The operation was initially launched in Southampton, and is now being rolled out forcewide. Mr Hayes said: “Analysis and research conducted by the Operation Fortress team has demonstrated that a buoyant drugs market leads to a significant increase in violence. “Much of this has predominantly been linked to crime gangs operating out of the capital. “It is therefore essential that we continue this targeted intelligence led work to make the whole of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight a hostile place for those who ply their trade in illegal and mind altering substances on our streets. “I have been impressed with the success of Operation Fortress under the direction and leadership of Detective Super-

Providing recreation and culture HAMPSHIRE County Council is looking at ways it can continue to provide culture and recreation services, while dealing with a 12 per cent cut in spending which sees savings needed by next year. One proposal includes the re-provision of three small libraries in the county, one of which is the service in Kingsclere, which could lead to the council transferring ownership to local community groups. Another option is to reduce the number of underused stops made by the mobile library, to make it more efficient. Cllr Keith Chapman, executive member for culture and recreation, said: “As all council services look to save 12 per cent from spending by 2015, Hampshire’s Library Service is no exception. “We’ve examined a number of ways we might make some savings, considering what changes would impact the least, while protecting provision for as many people as possible. The council is holding a public consultation regarding the Kingsclere and mobile library services, as well as other affected libraries in Milfordon-Sea and Grayshott. It will run until May 2, and more information is available at www.hants.gov.uk/ library.

DREDGING work at Fleet Pond is entering the next phase of the ongoing restoration project, with silt from the pond set to be used at a golf course. Silt will be taken from the island in Brookly Bay to be used by Keltbray Ltd at one of its courses in southern England. In addition, Hemelite Bay will also be dredged, with silt from the site being used to create extensions to the Wellington and Northern Reedbeds. This phase is being funded by the Environment Agency, with the ÂŁ1million restoration project being led by Hart District Council. Cllr Sara Kinnell, portfolio holder for leisure and environmental promotions, is pleased that the silt will be used elsewhere. She said: “Gaining permission to take the silt off-site is a major step in the Fleet Pond Restoration Project, and will enable future removal as more funding becomes available.â€? Colin Gray, chairman of Fleet Pond Society, said: “It is very good news that we have found a project able to take silt removed from the pond. “This will help our objective to remove further silt in future phases of the restoration programme.â€?

Brothers’ impossible dream BRITAIN’S Got Talent finalists Richard and Adam are embarking on their first ever UK tour, and the first show is at The Anvil on Saturday. The Welsh singing duo fi nished third in last year’s series of the popular talent show, and their debut album ‘The Impossible Dream’ spent four weeks in the number one spot, selling over 200,000 copies. As well as performing songs from the album, the pair have also promised a range of other harmonies, interspersed with stories from growing up singing together. “We’ve always said that it’s great doing albums,” said Richard. “But what we look to do is stand in a room, to perform and sing. “That’s all we’ve done for the last however many years, singing as and when we can, so fi nally the ability to go onto a stage and for people to have paid to come and see us, we just can’t wait for it. It’s something we’ve lived our lives being part of 24 hours a day. It’s just hopefully going to be a great show.” Despite their success on Britain’s Got Talent, their experience

in the fi nal was marred when a disgruntled violinist ran on stage during their performance, and started throwing eggs at Simon Cowell. “It was such a weird experience,” Richard said. “We were singing and were just totally unaware. We had earpieces in, so we couldn’t hear the reaction of the audience, judges, nothing. “We just carried on, and it got to the instrumental of the song and we clocked her. Then we’ve looked forward and seen Simon covered in egg. “Simon had rejected their group in the past, and we were disappointed with that coming from another artist. “But there was light at the end of the tunnel. Releasing an album with four weeks at number one was absolute madness, and it just made the whole process seem worth it at that point.” Richard and Adam are hoping to release a new album later in the year. • Richard (left) and Adam perform the first show of their first UK tour at The Anvil this weekend

CHIPSAWAY GO FROM Deeside Care STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Home Launch New Campaign to Keep Home Open! It’s called Ssshh! & stands for “Stop Shutting Silver Haired Homesâ€? Deeside Care Home for Older People is owned by Hampshire County Council and has sadly been ‘earmarked’ for being sold-off. ‌ BUT ‌. It is not due to close until October 2014 and still has a full complement of trained staff with 13 rooms standing EMPTY! We think this is shameful when we know there are families in the town who are crying out for RESPITE CARE‌ The Deeside campaigners are raising a petition to appeal to Hampshire County Council to provide this vital service in the community with negligible cost implications. So if you agree with us that Deeside should be used for respite care then please come along on launch day:
Local ChipsAway business, covering Basingstoke and the surrounding areas, continues to go from strength to strength. Current owner of the business Andrew Banning has owned the business for the last 5 years and insists that the combination of an unparalleled focus on customer service and the industry admired ChipsAway SMART repair system, has enabled Andrew to grow the business from a mobile operation run from a single mobile bodyshop, to their current ďŹ xed location in Worting Court, in the grounds of Worting House, now employing another 2 qualiďŹ ed SMART Repair Technicians. ChipsAway’s unique system allows Andrew and
his team to avoid, in most cases, having to paint whole panels, by just repairing the damaged area, thus saving some of their customers up to 50% on the cost of a traditional bodyshop repair, whilst including a lifetime of ownership guarantee with all their repairs. The move to Worting Court has also enabled Andrew and his team, Workshop Manager Tom Blandford and Smart Repair Technician Jamie Miles, to extend this service to more traditional bodyshop repairs, and also serves as the location for Andrew Banning Automotive Solutions, a bespoke detailing and customising business, transforming the look of any make or model of car, as per the customers request and

speciďŹ cation. However, this move to a ďŹ xed location and the removal of the van based mobile repair service has not meant that Andrew has lost sight of the importance of continueing to offer industry leading levels of customer convenience and service and he is quick to reassure customers that he will not be losing sight of the importance of remaining available to customers at all times with free repair advice. All estimates are still free and under no obligation and a free collection and redlivery serivice is offered with all repairs and Andrew invites all customers requiring any advice or estimates for any damage to their car to feel free to contact him directly on 07773 014097.

The Moscow State Circus returns to The Anvil for three shows, one on Friday 7 March at 7.30pm and two on Saturday 8 March at 2pm and 6pm and you really shouldn’t miss what is undoubtedly the greatest and most famous circus on earth. As the show opens, superstar clowns Pavlik and Klava invite the audience to a wondrous and mysterious place. As the loveable buffoons reminisce about past times in one of the most famous cities on earth they are surrounded by a multitude of flying, back flipping, juggling and roller skating performers. This year’s show features the unbelievable roller-skating of the Veslovskis, the ladder balancing Efremkin Brothers, Yakovlev Vertical Pole Jugglers, the most demanding feats of strength from the hand balancing of Vladislav Khostik, and the gorgeous and gracious aerial act of Natalia Goncharova. Add to the mix, the Kozak Whip Crackers and the revolving Russian swing, catapults its 10 strong troupe high into the apex of the auditorium at breakneck speed. Tickets for The Moscow State Circus are priced ÂŁ27, ÂŁ22 and ÂŁ16; under 16s ÂŁ3 off top 2 ticket prices. For more information or for tickets, call the Anvil Arts box office on 01256 844244. The country’s number one car for the second year running
The nation’s favourite THE Ford Fiesta begins 2014 not only as the nation’s favourite car, but also a double What Car? Awards winner. What our customers think VË ßËW?ÁË ?aËMjj ËÍ? j ËÍ Ë three different repair centres which was suffering from low power none of them diagnosed the problem. I took it to these guys for a remap and full exhaust in the hopes it would fi x it. It was better but Byron still thought it wasn’t right so spent another couple of hours diagnosing it! He didn’t charge me extra and even fi nished after they should of closed. You just don’t get that kind of service these days. Amazing! Cheers, Clive Baldwin

Collard and Foster to team up again with Turkington Rain wipes out fixtures THE recent bad weather decimated the region’s footballing fixtures at the weekend, with no play possible involving any of our teams. Basingstoke Town were scheduled to take on Hayes and Yeading at Kingsfield, but the match was called off a day in advance due to the state of the surface. Jason Bristow’s men will be hoping to host Chelmsford on Saturday, but with a month’s rainfall scheduled for four days this week, this is very much in doubt. Also in question are matches involving Hartley Wintney, Whitchurch United and Tadley Calleva. Hartley Wintney are due to take on Epsom and Ewell at the Memorial Ground, having lost 4-2 at the promotion hopefuls in the reverse fi xture just nine days ago. The Row are currently 14th in the Combined Counties Premier. Jim Macey’s Whitchurch sit sixth in the Wessex Premier, and will be hoping to collect three points against relegation-threatened Fawley on Saturday should the match escape the weather. Tadley, meanwhile, face a trip to Amesbury a week on Saturday. Danny Dolan’s side are currently ninth in Wessex Division One.
Sport Bites Waterlogged BASINGSTOKE RFC’s trip to Westcombe Park in the National League Three London was postponed on Saturday, due to a waterlogged pitch at the Kent ground. Westcombe are just one spot ahead of Basingstoke in the table, with the teams in 10th and 11th positions respectively. Basingstoke will hope to return to action on Saturday when they host CS Rugby, while last weekend’s postponed game has been rescheduled for March 15.

LOCAL basketball club Basingstoke Blizzards are appealing for new young players, as they hope to set up a junior section at the club. The new team would compete in tournaments and friendlies, and its establishment has been made possible by a grant from the Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust fund. Anyone interested can go to a training session, held at Queen Mary’s College Sports Hall every Saturday from 2pm.
Silver Shelley TEENAGE judo star Shelley Ludford has won a silver medal at the British Championships in Sheffield, following on from four golds and two bronze medals in a successful year. Shelley won five fights to reach the final in Sheffield, competing in the under 63kg class, before losing to world bronze medallist Lulu Piovesana. As a result of her competitive results in the past 12 months, Shelley has been selected for England’s Talent Development Squad.

week. Danielle,14, from Winklebury, will perform her routine before Torvill and Dean recreate their iconic skating moment from the 1984 Winter Olympics. She is the youngest member
of eight junior British skaters, who were selected for the trip by the National Ice Skating Association. The team were invited by Torvill and Dean to commemorate the historic anniversary, which
