TEENAGER’S QUEST TO PUT AN END TO WASTE Spare fruit and veg the target A TEENAGER from Didcot has set up her own initiative to ensure surplus fruit and vegetables no longer have to go to waste. Nicole Wilson, 16, who is home educated, started to circulate the idea after apple trees in people’s garden’s in East Hagbourne were found to be overflowing a few years ago. She will now take here Vegcycle initiative to Didcot Sunday Market this weekend. “I thought there must be a way to reduce the waste and let other people enjoy what has been grown locally,” she said. Vegcycle is Nicole’s fi rst venture and she admits that she does have low expectations ahead of her fi rst

day on the market this Sunday. She added: “Once people know more about it they will be more willing to share. “If I think low and I get better that is a good thing other than expecting big and getting nothing.” Didcot Sunday Market has been operating outside Sainsbury’s in the Orchard Centre since March with the purpose of raising funds for the town’s Christmas Street Fair. Jeanette Howse, chairman of Didcot Christmas Street Fair said she was impressed by Nicole’s initiative. “I just think its a brilliant idea,” she said. “Everyone has surplus and for someone to have the initiative and to do something about it is brilliant.
“Nicole just wants people to not waste fruit in their gardens and we want people to come down and support.” Didcot Sunday Market has so far raised £2,000 for the Christmas Street Fair, which is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary, and Ms Howse continued: “Hopefully we have a legacy going forward this year but we still need to raise around £15,000 a year for the street fair. “Everyone is getting into the spirit which is what it is all about. It is a huge event in Didcot and the town has always embraced it. “The street fair is for local people. There has to be money made out of it and it is a good way of everyone being involved - schools, churches, clubs - it’s strength is that it is still going.” Didcot Sunday Market is open from 10am-4pm. It costs £25 for a commercial pitch and £15 for a charity stall.

Carterton pitch is ready for kick-off THE gates on Carterton’s allweather artificial pitch are set to be thrown open this week after the completion of major refurbishments. Located on Carterton Community College’s campus, the pitch was closed during the summer for work to be carried out to replace the 15-year-old worn out surface. Now sporting a new 40mm 3G surface, which looks and feels like grass as well as being suitable throughout the year in any weather conditions, the facility is now suitable again for sports including football, hockey and tag rugby. The facility will continue to be used jointly by the school and local community, including Cart-

West Oxfordshire District Council has invested over £167,000 in modernising the pitch and Cllr Richard Langridge, cabinet member for Communities with responsibility for leisure, is pleased to see the facility ready for use. He said: “One of our priorities is to support residents to be active and stay healthy, and investing in sports facilities is a vital part of this. “This is the fi rst-ever 40mm 3G turf pitch for community use in our district and we are delighted that it will support a wide range of sports people.” Iain Bilton, deputy head of Carterton Community College, added: “We are looking forward to using it, it’s going to be fabulous, a truly outstanding surface for an outstanding community.” The re-opening of Carterton’s

Rugby legend shows students how it’s done ONE of England’s world cup winning rugby players passed on some of his experience to schoolchildren in Oxford last week. Mike Catt, who was victorious back in 2003 and is now England’s attacking skills coach, visited Matthew Arnold School to coach 30 students. Boys and girls from years 8-12 were put through their paces for more than an hour before they got to ask Mike about his career. Headteacher Katherine Ryan said: “Being able to bring a sportsman of Mike’s stature to the school to pass on his experience to our students is fantastic. “He enjoyed an illustrious career on the pitch for almost
20 years, showing how far dedication can take you in life and is a great role model for young people.” The former England man also took part in a Q&A with businessmen at Clydesdle Bank’s Business and Private Banking Centre in Oxford.
Mark Laughlan, head of Clydesdale Bank’s Business and Private Banking Centre in Oxford, said: “Mike Catt is one of England’s most successful sportsmen of his generation and it has been great to see the enthusiasm for his visit within the local community.”

Two treated for smoke inhalation OXFORDSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service were called out to two separate incidents in the city on Monday, with one in Jack Straw’s Lane and the other in Green Road. The fi rst incident, on Green Road, took place at 9.43am where fi refighters were confronted with a kitchen fi re and a large amount of smoke coming from a ground-floor flat. It was as a result of a plastic high chair being left on an electric hob that had been accidentally turned on. Firefighter Dan Smith said: “On arrival we were glad to see that everyone who lived at the property had evacuated but worryingly there were no smoke alarms.” The second fi re on Jack Straw’s Lane at 5.09pm started when cooking was left unattended on a hob. Two adults were treated for slight smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene. Fire crews will be returning to both areas to offer further safety advice to neighbours.
Woman found guilty of fraudulent claims A 45 year-old woman has been given a community order after fraudulently claiming over £23,000. Sharon Marie Bishop, of Cherry Close, Blackbird Leys, pleaded guilty to obtaining Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Income Support between July 2010 and October 2012. Bishop was charged with failing to declare a change of circumstance to Oxford City Council that would affect her entitlement to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit between August 2010 and October 2012. She was also charged with failing to declare a change of circumstance to the Depart-
ment for Work & Pensions that she knew would affect her entitlement to Income Support between July 2010 and October 2012. All the offences concerned the failure to declare that her partner had moved in with her and she fraudulently claimed, in total, £23,037.39. At Oxford Magistrates Court on September 24, Bishop was sentenced to carry out 180 hours of community work during the next 12 months and was ordered to pay £85 costs. She will have to pay back the overpaid benefit to both Oxford City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Innovation centre is back in business… MILTON Park’s newly refurbished innovation centre was officially back open for business earlier this week. MEPC director James Dipple marked the launch by opening a wall of balloons before an 80-strong audience of guests from the private and public sector. In order to improve the innovation centre, research was conducted amongst customers using the building, asking how the facilities could be improved for business. The research identified a requirement for more meeting rooms and a business lounge for informal and formal conversations. Mr Dipple explained: “Our Innovation Centre now offers five bookable meeting rooms which can cater to meeting from six to sixty guests with a 50 seater business lounge and coffee bar, touch-down areas and wifi. “The community of entrepre-

Charity offers helping hand to Judith’s appeal AN appeal to raise money to help a disabled Oxford girl get the vital equipment she needs to keep active has been launched. Ten-year-old Judith Stickings, from Headington, suffered severe birth asphyxia which led to cerebral palsy and visual impairment. She is now awaiting delivery of a therapy tricycle that will enable her to move with greater freedom and exercise as she develops, and her family are working with charity Caudwell Children to raise the money. “Judith’s condition is as a result of her basically dying at birth and being resuscitated, said mother Gillian. “She had massive oxygen deprivation that damaged her brain, and was in a special care baby unit for the fi rst two weeks of her life. Over the last year, Judith has taken part in bike accessibility days, which helps disabled children try out different types of bicycles and trikes that suit their needs.
By Adam Flinn adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk
Gillian said: “She’d gotten very interested in PC Plum from Balamory, and then suddenly this spring she said ‘I want a bicycle so I can be like PC Plum!’ “The sort of bike she would need was way out of our price range, but we applied to Caudwell and they gave us a grant. “It will help her development. Apart from the exercise and physiotherapy aspects, she can re-enact in her brain that she’s being a policeman and all this sort of thing. It should have huge benefits. “Judith’s one of those people that if she was in a wheelchair and wanted to climb Everest, she’s got that stubborn personality that would get her there. “Once she’s decided she really wants to do something, if you try and make it happen, you’ll really get the best results. “The thing worrying for me is how many hours everyday I’m
going to be expected to have to go out with her, as I’m not going to get anything else done!â€? Caudwell Children have a set a target just short of ÂŁ2,000 they would like to raise to help fund the tricycle, having raised half of that so far. Trudi Beswick, CEO of Caudwell Children, said: “Specialist therapy tricycles are a vital piece of equipment for children as they enable a greater level of freedom and independence. “However we are desperate for more funding to continue to provide practical and emotional support to children like Judith who need equipment like this to help live with their conditions. “Tricycles are invaluable to help bring families with disabled children closer together and we are appealing for the community to get involved and help us change lives in their local community.â€? PM announces ÂŁ400m cancer drugs boost PRIME Minister and Witney MP David Cameron met with families and staff at Oxford Children’s Hospital on Saturday, as part of a visit to announce a further ÂŁ400m for cancer drugs in England. He was joined by his wife Samantha, and were introduced to staff and families on Kamran’s Ward as well as meeting with former patients and representatives from cancer charities. Mr Cameron revealed a ÂŁ400m extension to the Cancer Drugs Fund while on the visit, which more than 34,000 patients have benefited from since it was created in 2010. He said: “When I became Prime Minister three years ago, many patients with rare cancers were being denied lifesaving treatments, “That is why we created the Cancer Drugs Fund, and it is why we are extending it.â€? The fund gives patients fast access to cancer drugs that are not routinely available on the NHS, but what their doctors believe is right for them. It was introduced after concerns were raised that too many newer cancer drugs were being denied to NHS patients. But Saturday’s announcement now means the fund is confi rmed for an extra two years until March 2016.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Josh Florey feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Oxfordshire from their local depots and Josh is
is a major factor in his success. ‘The truthis that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much
a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Josh a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

OXFORD held a special “open day celebration yesterday to mark the renaissance of Wednesday’s Charter Market. Lord Mayor Cllr Dee Sinclair launched the market by cutting the ribbon at Gloucester Green at 11am. Oxford City Council has granted a five-year license for the market to Geraud UK and LSD Promotions, who will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all the markets held in Gloucester Green. Cllr Sinclair said: “The Gloucester Green markets always have something different and unusual for people to buy and they are an essential part of Oxford’s diverse retail offer. “The open day showcased what the market can offer with the new operators and how they can attract more customers. Gloucester Green’s existing markets will continue with a fresh look, additional promotion and investment to stalls, along with an upgraded management system. Geraud and LSD will work with the council and stakeholders to improve the markets by increasing stallholders.

Cops on high alert in rural crime operation POLICE in West Oxfordshire and Cherwell carried out three night patrols last week, in an effort to reduce incidents of rural crime. Patrols took place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night from 9pm to 5am, as more than 20 officers scoured the countryside and investigated any suspicious activity. Farmers, landowners and gamekeepers were invited to attend the patrols, specifically the areas around their lands to help deter would-be offenders. “I’m really excited about this operation, said Supt Colin Paine, area commander for West Oxfordshire and Cherwell, who also went out on one of the patrols on Thursday evening. “I think it provides a real opportunity for us to make our rural communities much safer, and it should also send a message of fear to the hearts of criminals who would want to operate in this area. “The evidence is rural crime is going down year on year but we must not be complacent. One crime is one too many. “I think it’s right we should take the initiative and take this opportunity to work with

Cliona Keane, one of the fi rst customers, said: “Whenever I visit London I eat at itsu, so I’m really pleased to see a store

Row continues as students move in POST-GRADUATE students have started to move into Oxford University’s controversial Castle Mill flats, angering local countryside and rural community campaigners. The Castle Mill development, on the edge of Port Meadow, has been approved by Oxford City Council but fi nal planning conditions regarding issues such as contamination have yet to be resolved. Helen Marshall, director of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) in Oxfordshire, is “appalled” at the news, calling it “premature and inappropriate”. “The planning permission granted to the University expressly says that the buildings should not be occupied until a number of important planning conditions are met,” Ms Marshall said. “Only a couple of weeks ago, Oxford City Council deferred a decision about this because of the need to evaluate the environmental impact of aspects of the development. “If Oxford University were at all serious about seeking to resolve the disastrous impact of these buildings, it would have

A spokesperson for Oxford City Council said: “The Council has written to the University advising that the occupation of the accommodation is at the University’s risk, as the City Council, as the local planning authority, has not discharged the outstanding planning conditions. “The City Council is advised that it should not give consideration to enforcement action until it has received the University’s voluntary Environmental Impact Assessment. “The University intends submitting its voluntary Environmental Impact Assessment in December.” A spokesperson for Oxford University said: “We have addressed all contamination issues on the site in their entirety and carried out all necessary remedial work, to the satisfaction of the city and environmental authorities.”

MP for Wantage and Didcot
Holding the police to account When the Government introduced Police and Crime Commissioners, one clear aim was to increase public accountability. While we have a low crime rate in the Wantage and Didcot Constituency compared with many other parts of the UK, I know that local residents do have concerns about many police and crime issues, so the opportunity to make sure that those in charge of the police know what you think is very important indeed. Many people felt this was lacking in the old Police Authorities. I am very pleased, therefore, to be able to publicise an event on 14th October. The Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, Anthony Stansfield, will be holding a public meeting in Didcot. This is an open public meeting, which anyone can attend. The event will be an opportu-

nity for the Police and Crime Commissioner, along with the local police commander, Supt Andy Boyd, to meet residents and deliver presentations about the role of the PCC and local policing both in my constituency and elsewhere. A representative from the Community Safety Partnership will also be in attendance to tell everyone more about the work they carry out in the area. Residents will be able to ask questions and feed back any concerns they may have about policing and crime. The meeting will take place at 7pm on Monday 14 October at Didcot Civic Hall. Please do go along if you can both to hear about what is happening with policing locally and to put your own views to Anthony Stansfield and his colleagues. That is local accountability in action.

Flood prevention work completed WORK to reduce the risk of flooding at a West Oxfordshire car park has been carried out, as part of on-going prevention measures in the district. The Guildenford Car Park in Burford is the town’s main public car park, but has been affected by flooding from a nearby tributary of the River Windrush three times in the last 12 months. Heavy downpours at the end of last year meant it had to stay closed for three weeks after the site was flooded so badly. But work undertaken by West Oxfordshire District Council,
By Adam Flinn adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk
which owns the car park, means two spillways from the river have been opened up. Silt has also been cleared from the riverbed, which it hopes will reduce water levels and improve the flow of water. Cllr David Harvey, cabinet member for environment, said: “The issue of flooding remains a priority for our council and the measures at Burford are the latest in a succession of alleviation
work carried out in West Oxfordshire. “The car park was badly affected by flooding last winter and this had a significant impact on the town. “We want to avoid a repeat of this and are very hopeful that this work will prevent serious flooding so that the car park can continue running smoothly, which is vital for the town’s businesses and tourism industry. Chair of Burford Chamber of Trade, Jennifer Smith, added: “Last year’s floods had an impact on local trade during the Christ-
mas season and we hope that improvements will reduce flood problems in the future. During periods of heavy rainfall, the spillways redirect excess water back into the river, which will be monitored to ensure there are no detrimental environmental or commercial impacts. The council has also re-levelled the car park with 45 tonnes of gravel, as well as resurfacing some areas to get rid of potholes caused by flooding. It is part of £1m secured by the council for a continuing programme of flood prevention work.

Bake Off stars help to raise money for cancer services
• (Left to right) Joe Bates, Toby Waterworth and Christine Wallace judge the cakes at the Macmillan coffee morning at Smeg UK Ltd
GREAT British Bake Off stars Christine Wallace and Toby Waterworth swapped their rolling pins for pens last Friday as they were the judges at a special Macmillan coffee morning at Milton Park, near Didcot. Held at Smeg UK Ltd, supporters of Macmillan Cancer Support, Christine and Toby judged a range of cakes made by the employees before having their own creations auctioned off for charity. “Everybody had worked so hard and gone through a lot of trouble,” Christine said. “This was the fi rst time that I had judged but we tried to make it far and we marked on presentation and taste.” Helen Rowse was the winner after impressing Christine and Toby with her sponge cake based on a tub of neapolitan ice cream. Tony Phoenix-Morrison, better known as Tony the Fridge, was also invited along. The 49-year-old from South Tyneside ran from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise money and awareness of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. Tony carried the fridge for 41 days, covering 1,009 miles, and

has been nominated for a pride of Britain award. Tony chose to carry a fridge on his back as a metaphorical symbol of cancer being a weight on people’s shoulders and he said: “Most people do not make cancer and most people probably would not have made my journey. “I knew when I set off where I was going to and I always going to make it. I would have crawled. There was no way I would have not got there.” About 1,500 events were held throughout the county last Friday as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The charity was hoping to raise £160,000 in Oxfordshire alone and Joe Bates, a representative from Macmillan, who attended Smeg UK’s event, said: “It was a great event, and once again they got behind us whole-heartedly, helping us raise thousands of pounds to fund our services.” The money raised will be used to fund Macmillan’s cancer services including specialist nurses and a nurse-run support line.
MP for Henley
Village tour was worth doing THESE last few weeks I have been conducting my village tour within the constituency. The Henley constituency consists of only two towns - Thame and Henley. They account for 20% of the population. The remainder live in small and medium sized villages. Every year I visit some of these to attend schools, fetes or the like. But that always leaves a good few unvisited. Hence the village tour. This year I decided to visit 30 villages in 8 days. At some of them we had fi xed points such as meetings in village halls or with specific interest groups. At others we just turned up and knocked on doors to gauge the issues of concern. The results were fascinating. Given an open goal to shoot at, the majority expressed themselves happy with the direction of travel the
Government was taking us in. In particular, there was a lot of support for the economic recovery, the signs for which have been with us all summer. Many of the issues on people’s minds were genuinely local. These included the state of the roads and planning. What this showed was how local local politics really are and how this sort of exercise should be carried out by councillors as indeed I used to do. There was no better time to undertake this sort of activity. It coincided with the Liberal Democrat, UKIP and the Labour Party conferences. But there appeared to be no feeling on the doorstep that any of them were gaining strength from this association. As a meet the people exercise it was well worth doing.

Council on the ball as fraudster is caught out A BANBURY man who fraudulently claimed housing benefit has been caught out after handing in a claim on the same day he gave notice of his intention to marry his ‘landlady’. Martyn Broughton, 57, of Springfield Avenue, appeared at Banbury Magistrates’ Court on September 17, and was sentenced to 50 hours community service. The 57-year-old will also have to pay back £2,931.39 he fraudulently claimed, as well as £250 in court costs and a £60 victim surcharge. Broughton had been claiming housing benefit he was not entitled to after deliberately failing to tell authorities his landlady was now his partner. Investigators had established Mr Broughton had handed in a false claim form for benefits at Bodicote House. But he did so on the same day he gave notice of his intention to marry his landlady at the registry office at Bodicote. Broughton said he paid rent to his fiancée up to the date they married in October 2012. However, he pleaded guilty to the charge of fraud after taking legal advice.

Copper raises over £2k in Berlin Marathon AN OXFORDSHIRE police sergeant has raised over £2,300 for The Brain Tumour Charity after he completed the Berlin Marathon on Sunday. Colin Travi, from Woodstock, was inspired to run the marathon by Jenny Ledger, the wife of a colleague who is terminally ill with a brain tumour. He completed the course in four hours and 19 minutes, in what was his fi rst attempt at the marathon distance. “I was so proud to have run for this charity as it was something I could do in a positive way to promote this awful condition and raise money to assist much needed research,” said Colin. “The atmosphere was electric with plenty of bands, crowd support and general banter with other competitors from all over the world. “I want to thank all those people who gave generously and I hope it has done some good for my humanity.” Colin’s next challenge is the Great South Run in Portsmouth on October 27.
Councillor Ken Atack, Cherwell District Council’s lead member for fi nance, said: “Fraudsters can rest assured that the council is on the ball when it comes to detecting and prosecuting false claims. “We will always encourage those with genuine reasons to come forward and claim what they are entitled to. “But we will take action to prosecute offenders and recover the money. “Mr Broughton now has a criminal record and may fi nd his future life chances affected because of this.” Magistrates noted the probation service’s comments that he was suitable for unpaid work, but might want to impose a conditional discharge. But the magistrates considered the matter too serious and imposed the community service order at the trial last month. Anyone who is aware of someone cheating the benefit system is encouraged to call Cherwell’s fraud hotline on 0800 716152. All calls are confidential.
Man found guilty of sex offences A MAN from Grove has been found guilty of a number of sexual offences against a child, including rape. Bradley Antill, 46, of Fulmar Place, Grove, Wantage was found guilty by a jury of three counts of indecent assault, eight counts of gross indecency, one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault on a child under 13-years-old. Oxford Crown Court heard that Antill assaulted the girl, who was aged between six and nine at the time, between May 1, 2002, and April 30, 2004 in Wantage and Didcot. Investigating officer, DC Maria Morrisey of the Child Abuse Investigation Unit, said: “Antill is a dangerous predatory offender who preyed on his vulnerable victim. “Antill denied the allegations, forcing his victim to relive the appalling and frightening experiences all over again. “I would like to take this opportunity to praise the bravery of the victim for giving her evidence and allowing justice to prevail.” The 46-year-old is scheduled to be sentenced on October 24 at Oxford Crown Court. Antill has been remanded in custody.

Celebrations for Old People’s Day
How has the Singing for Fun choir helped the people of Blackbird Leys?
• Dorothy Gardner, aged 81 "It was recommended to me by a friend that has connections with Clockwise. "I have been here for three years now and I thoroughly enjoy it. "It lifts my spirits and I have met some lovely people and the music really lifts you and encourages you to carry on for the rest of the day."
• Albert Whitfi eld Sirrell (known as David), aged 78 "This helps me to keep active. "I have sung opera and I used to sing for the Rhos Male Voice Choir in Wrexham. "I love singing, it's nice. I'm the only man in the group and we have only ever had two men!"
ELDER residents from across the city celebrated UK Older People’s Day in style earlier this week. About 400 people came through the doors at the Town Hall as the City Council and the Oxford 50+ Network joined forces to put on a Big Skills Share. UK Older People’s Day is a celebration of the contribution the elder generation make to society and with a broad range of stalls on show there was much to do at what was termed as the one stop shop. The Singing for Fun choir from tthe Clockhouse Community Centre in Greater Leys, Museum of Oxford, Oxford U3A (University of the Third Age) RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) and Age UK were just some of the clubs, groups and charities at the event. Vicki Galvin, GO Active Coordinator at Oxford City Council said: “We wanted to celebrate UK Older People’s Day and we

There seems to be a need for it and we will look to do it on a more local level.” The event was free to attend and there was an opportunity for people to try planting with the Botanical Gardens and jewellery making with Age UK while for those who wanted be active, there was dancing, seated exercise and table tennis.

CORNISH electric-folk singers 3 Daft Monkeys come to Oxford on Wednesday, as part of a major UK tour to promote the release of their forthcoming sixth studio album. ‘Of Stones and Bones’ is set for release on October 21, and crowds to their Oxford show at The Bullingdon Arms in Cowley will hear songs from the new album before anyone else. The group is made up of Tim Ashton, Athene Roberts and Lukas Drinkwater, and they will be playing at venues across the country throughout October and November. Tim said: “We’re going to do a show incorporating all of our new tunes from the new album coming out, as well as quite a lot of the oldies and favourites. “With the new album, we’ve got a full drum kit, we’ve got a four-piece band with a brass section, so it’s a lot bigger than the old albums, but it’s also more story-based. “It’s all based around Cornish tales. of people who have been hanged and then come back to life. “All sorts of fables and stuff from around Cornwall that we’ve gathered up over the last year or so, basically.â€? This won’t be the fi rst time that Tim and 3 Daft Monkeys have performed in the city, and it follows on from previous gigs at the Bully and the Oxford Folk Festival. Tim added: “We’ve performed quite a few times in Oxford, and we usually do a really nice show. “We’ve had a good response and good turnout most times we play, so we’re looking forward to it. “It’s a good audience in Oxford. We like them and they know how to dance and have a good time.â€? The show starts at 7.30pm. AGATHA Christie’s classic novel The Mousetrap, which has also become the world’s longest running stage production, comes to the Oxford New Theatre on Tuesday. The production had never previously left the West End, but to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the fi rst performance it is travelling around the country. It fi rst opened at The Ambassadors Theatre in 1952, and the slightly belated celebration is made up of 60 productions taking place worldwide. Karl Howman, who has previously appeared in the BBC sitcom Brush Strokes, plays Mr Paravavincini, a foreign visitor at a guest house in the show. He said: “I’m playing a foreigner who turns up out of the blue because his car’s broken down in the snow, but is anybody what they seem? “That’s really what the Christie genre is about. They’re at this guesthouse, and then the murder happens and of course he’s one of the suspects. “The play had never left the

West End and we’ve never toured before, so I’ve agreed to do it because it’s the special 60th diamond jubilee celebration.” Karl stars alongside Joanna Croll, Ellie Jacob, Anne Kavanagh, Henry Luxemburg, Roger Ringrose, Ryan Saunders and Jonathan Woolf for the Oxford show, somewhere Karl has never performed before. He added: “I’ve got to say I’m loving it, it’s extraordinary. I’ve been acting for 45 years, and I’ve always done plays. “I don’t think I’ve played Oxford before. I might be wrong because when you’re younger, you do big tours and don’t always remember. “What I’m fi nding more nowadays with this tour is I enjoy getting out more at the places I’m going to, and taking it all in. “I think now I’m more interested in the sights, maybe attending the church or going

ALL 37 of William Shakespeare’s plays are to be performed in one evening, as part of the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) two shows coming to Oxfordshire. Segments of every one of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets are acted out in just 97 minutes, in this irreverent, fast-paced journey through the Bard’s works. American actor Simon Cole is one of the three performers starring in the show, and plays a character who thinks he knows a lot about Shakespeare. Simon said: “We will perform the works of William Shakespeare in one evening, now of course in full we can’t do that, so we do have to cheat a bit. “We decided that the comedies aren’t actually as funny as the tragedies, so we knock out all the comedies straight away, which we entitle the Comedy of Two Well Measured Gentlemen Lost In the Merry Wives of Venice on a Midsummer’s Twelfth Night in Winter. “Whilst we refer to each other

by our fi rst names, we play all of the characters real quick so there’s a lot of hats flying around, and lots of wigs that go on.” As well as Shakespeare, the RSC also abridge other topics including the complete history of America, the world of sports and even the Bible. ‘The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)’ has enjoyed a lengthy nine-year run at London’s Criterion Theatre in the West End, and is currently touring the country. Simon added: “Originally when we were in the West End, you get people who would come in with the complete works of Shakespeare in their hands, thinking they’d be able to follow it. “Of course they weren’t realising if we did the whole 37 plays back to back, you’re probably going to be sitting there for about four days. “We do fi nd it’s a lot of fun. Song and dance
• Simon Cole and the Reduced Shakespeare Company perform all of the Bard’s work in just 97 minutes educational, it’s very silly, and we have serious moments. “We treat the texts with reverence, but at the same time it’s pretty fast and pretty crazy, and in 97 minutes we do them all, and I think we have a world record for that.”

Andris Nelsons conductor Brahms St Anthony Variations (Variations on a theme of Haydn) Brahms Symphony No 3, Brahms Symphony No 1 Tonight’s concert offers two mainstays of the German romantic repertoire, Brahms Symphonies 1 and 3. No 1 finds Brahms at his most radiantly inspired and upbeat, whilst No 3 is a symphony of swirling emotions in which every movement ends quietly (audiences at the time were taken completely by surprise). Alongside these major works is the ‘St Anthony’ Variations, often regarded as Brahms first truly symphonic work. Although frequently viewed as a conservative composer, Brahms’ music is always full of surprises. Please do book early for this concert to avoid disappointment. Welcome Home Feature
Parade for returning troops AT 11AM tomorrow morning, Didcot will have the opportunity to welcome home their bomb disposal soldiers in style, writes Jack Johnson. Otherwise known as the Freedom Parade, troops from the 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps, will set off from the Orchard Centre and as she was in Abingdon back in May, The Princess Royal will be in attendance as the guest of honour. Princess Anne will also attend a medal ceremony for the 11EOD task force at Didcot’s Civic Centre and the town’s mayor Cllr Axel MacDonald is delighted to see The Princess Royal grace the streets of the town.
“It is a tremendous honour for Her Royal Highness to attend the parade,” he said, “and I feel that both the soldiers and their families will feel that their hard work is recognised at the very highest level. “I feel very privileged to be the mayor of Didcot at a time such as this.” Historically, the Freedom Parade is granted by municipal authorities, in this case Didcot Town Council, to military units with the intention of affi rming the bond between the regiment and the citizenry. Two hundred troops, who are based at the Vauxhall Barracks, recently returned home from Helmand and Cllr MacDonald wants to give them
the homecoming they deserve. “I have the utmost respect for our armed services,” he said, “and whilst never served myself have some understanding of the hardships and tough conditions our service personnel operate under.” The 11 EOD Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps, is the specialist unit responsible for counter terrorist bomb disposal and the EOD, the recovery and safe disposal of conventional munitions. Cllr MacDonald added: “All elements of the services rely on each other but I feel EOD have one of the toughest jobs going and I feel it a great honour to be able to welcome them home.” “There are very few in our society who
may be called upon to put themselves in harms way, even with the availability of modern protective equipment. “Those in our armed forces are one such group who have volunteered to do this. “Ultimately they do this to safeguard the freedoms we enjoy. “For this we owe a great debt to those who have been away and I feel it important for the community to show their gratitude with a warm welcome home.” Cllr MacDonald was also proud that the regiment is based in Didcot and continued: “I regard the location of 11th EOD in the town as a great honour. “Here is a proud regiment who undertake some of the toughest work
anyone ever has to undertake and I feel privileged that Didcot hosts their Headquarters. “It is therefore of highest importance that Didcot can offer a welcoming and embracing environment to the troops and their families.” The regiment has suffered casualties over the years and seven streets in Great Western Park are set to be named after fallen soldiers next year. Staff Sergeant Brett Linley, Staff Sergeant Chris Muir, Captain Dan Read, Captain Daniel Shepherd, Warrant Officer Class 2 Gary O’Donnell, Captain Lisa Head and Staff Sergeant Olaf Schmid will have the streets named after them.

house, high-mounted tail lights and raised ride height are hallmark design elements ensuring the new model is instantly recognisable as a Soul. Based on a new platform shared with the latest Kia cee’d, the new Soul boasts a stronger bodyshell, and suspension upgrades, is expected to give the new car improved driving dynamics, ride quality and refi nement.
REVIEW: KIA SOUL
By Philip Shoulder @writeonmotoring
The latest versions of Kia’s 1.6-litre GDi petrol and CRDi diesel engines will be offered, as well as six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions. The cabin is significantly quieter, with higher quality materials throughout, and greater sound proofi ng compared to the outgoing Soul. And the cabin accommodation has improved, with increased leg and headroom. The tailgate opening is now 60 mm wider, providing easier access to a larger cargo area, which has increased capacity to 354 litres (plus additional underfloor storage) with the rear seats upright. The New Soul will be available, depending on fi nal market specifications, with a choice between single and two-tone
interiors, with black, brown and grey leather and fabrics available. Depending on model, standard equipment should include: front LED lights and rear LED ‘halo’ lights; xenon headlights; keyless entry and push-button engine start; automatic climate control air-conditioning; cruise control; leather seat trim; ventilated front seats; heated front and rear seats; panoramic glass sunroof; and heated exterior mirrors. Safety and convenience features such as High Beam Assist, Parallel Parking Assist System and a Lane Departure Warning System, will also be available. The new Soul will carry over the outgoing model’s reputation for customisation. Buyers will be able to choose between up to 11 exterior paint fi nishes, as well as three different roof colours – black, white and red. Eight different alloy wheel designs – ranging from 16-inch to 18-inch in size – will be available. The all-new 2014 Kia Soul will go on sale across Europe next year. Full model line-up, specifications and prices are yet to be confi rmed.

Support Workers & Supported Living Workers Full & Part-time, from £15,429 pa (£7.91 ph) pro rata Milton Heights, Didcot, Abingdon & Sutton Courtenay Could you empower people with learning disabilities to achieve their goals? The merger of Hft and Self Unlimited has created a new force in the learning disabilities sector. By working innovatively in local communities, our national charity is helping the people we support to get more out of life - while ensuring you get more out of work. ‘It was a big result and performance from us’ Good day for biker Smith OXFORD’S Bradley Smith secured his best points finish since the German Grand Prix in July after his seventh place in Aragon last Sunday. The Tech 3 rider had tweaked his riding position ahead of the race weekend and after overtaking Andrea Dovizioso on the third lap he never looked back. Smith fi nished just over 30 seconds behind winner Marc Marquez, an improvement on his most recent results. “It was good to stay in front of the Ducatis and especially to pull away from them at the end of the race was a nice feeling,” Smith said. “I still believe that we have some more potential to improve our race setting. This will surely be our main aim for the flyaway races and I have no doubt that we will progress. “But all in all I can’t be unsatisfied with this weekend, especially considering how tough Friday was, when things did not really go according to plan, so to travel to Malaysia with a seventh position in my luggage is not too bad.” Smith is 10th in the rider standings with 80 points while Jorge Lorenzo’s dream of winning a successive and third world title look to be fading after Marquez’s victory in Aragon increased the gap between the two to 39 points.
CHRIS Wilder praised his Oxford United players after they bounced back from their first defeat of the season to beat Hartlepool United 3-1. United had their unbeaten record broken by league leaders Chesterfield just under a fortnight ago but Wilder’s men reacted positively to extend their impressive run on the road. With Andy Whing and Dave Kitson both suspended, Wilder brought Asa Hall into the middle of midfield and Ryan Williams made his fi rst league start of the campaign. And within five minutes, United were ahead as Michael Raynes’ clever turn on the edge of the box caught three Hartlepool players on their heels and Williams slotted into the bottom corner for his fi rst goal for the club. The home side drew level just after half-time through Luke James and began to insert their authority on the game. But Deane Smalley’s cool fi nish all but ended Hartlepool’s challenge before Asa Hall converted a last minute penalty. Wilder told the club: “It was a tough game. “People were looking, after our fi rst defeat of the season, how we would react. “Losing Kitson and Whing made

the task even more difficult but the players showed a fantastic reaction and it is a big result and performance for us.” He added: “I thought we got a bit sloppy after the fi rst goal and we possibly could have taken the game away from the opposition. “We knew that just after half time they would come back fighting and show a reaction and we were architects of our own downfall in that period, giving away too many free-kicks. “They punished us for one of them and that gave them the impetus and the momentum but we stemmed the tide and got a goal on the counter attack and it was good to see Asa wrap it up.” United moved back up to second in League Two as a result and closed the gap to Chesterfield to four points after the Spireites had their unbeaten record ended by Mansfield Town. Wilder’s men face Southend United at home this Saturday with Kitson available after serving a one-match ban and James Constable in contention after the striker played 20 minutes at Hartlepool last weekend.
Cook wins it for City
HENLEY Hawks’ winless run in the SSE National League 1 was extended to three matches last Saturday after a 32-15 defeat to Coventry. Hawks are without a win since their opening day victory over Tynedale and after suffering their second loss of the season they slipped down to 12th in the league table. A win and a draw at home means Hawks have yet to lose at Marlow Road so far this season and they will be hoping to maintain that record when they welcome Hull Ionians this Saturday. In the SSE National League 2, Will Millett starred for Chinnor as they made it four wins out of four with a 27-15 win over Redruth. Chinnor are now second in the table with 17 points and face Canterbury this weekend, Elsewhere, Oxford Harlequins also maintained their winning start after crushing Salisbury 57-7 in the South West 1 East.

ABINGDON’S Eddie Pepperell finished tied for 26th in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. The 22-year-old fi nished on 14-under-par, nine shots behind eventual winner David Howell. As a result, Pepperell moved up to 72nd in the Race To Dubai rankings after taking home €32,543.81 in prize money.
Plato keeps hopes alive
Guy the man for Wantage RICHARD Guy scored a hat-trick to rescue Wantage Town and send the Alfredians through to the second round of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup at the expense of Fairford Town. Guy tapped home early on to give Wantage the lead but Fairford soon levelled as Alex Rudd headed home unmarked. Tom Melledew then put Gary Ackling’s men back in front but the visitors soon found a way back in the game as Jack Allen forced the ball home just after the break. Fairford then gained the momentum, with Wantage’s challenge hindered by injuries to Mark James and Stuart Cattell, and they were unlucky not to take the lead as Robbie Sadler cleared off the line. However, the Alfredians sealed the win when Guy, fi rstly, smashed home from close range and then turned on a sixpence to fi re into the bottom corner. In a reverse of fortunes, fellow Hellenic Premier Division side Oxford City Nomads were knocked out by Highworth Town.
Sport Bites Hawks woe
JASON Plato kept his British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) hopes alive, as he picked up two wins at Silverstone on Sunday. He led from pole and dominated race one, while the second race was much closer as he overcame a late surge from championship leader Andrew Jordan and Aron Smith. After starting sixth in race three, Plato dropped back to
seventh, but picked up enough points over the weekend so he is still in the championship battle as the field head to Brands Hatch. Plato said: “We have an outside chance for the championship and I am not going to pass up any opportunity that comes my way, but we are not daft. It is one heck of a long shot. “Winning races is what is important now and that was
my main focus at Silverstone. “To reach 80 wins in the BTCC is satisfying personally, but what I am also pleased about is that we took our chances when they came.” He is 49 points behind Jordan and sits fi fth in the championship, and heads to Brands Hatch on October 13 for the fi nal three races of the season.
• Oxford City progressed in the FA Cup thanks to the head of Jamie Cook (Picture by Mike Allen) JAMIE Cook’s late header earned Oxford City their first win of the season as they beat Maidenhead United 1-0 to advance to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup. City’s prize is a trip to Skrill South leaders Eastleigh on October 12 while Mike Ford’s men will now look to build upon their fi rst win of the campaign. In a relatively even encounter against Maidenhead, Lee Hend-
erson came closest for City as he saw his header hit the post. Ford’s men began to press and were rewarded in the 86th minute as Cook headed home Steve Basham’s dangerous cross. After last weekend’s victory, City will now be looking to earn their fi rst league win of the season as they welcome Stalybridge Celtic to Court Place Farm on Saturday.

BOSS: THE LADS DID VERY WELL
Wallbridge praises team after cup win DIDCOT Town progressed from the second qualifying round of the FA Cup for the third time in four seasons by beating Southern Premier side Burnham 2-1 at the Loop Meadow Stadium last Saturday. First half goals from Pablo Haysham and Nick Thorne proved enough to book Diddy’s place in the third qualifying round, despite a nervy ending to the match which saw Danny Burnell net in the 92nd minute for the visitors. The Railwaymen have been handed a home tie against fellow Division One South & West side Shortwood United, a side they are more than familiar with after a 4-1 defeat to the Glouces-

tershire club on the opening day of the season. Last Saturday’s win delighted Wallbridge who was looking for a reaction after their 4-0 defeat to Bishops Cleeve the previous week. He said: “The lads did well, miles better than against Bishops Cleeve, and that’s all I really asked for. “We scored goals at good times and that was enough to win the game. “We made it a little bit difficult for ourselves in the last third of the game but we were better than

them and we deserved to win. “I think Joel (Meade) and Luke (Carnell) were absolutely outstanding but as a team we defended well. “We did play a bit deep late on in the game and that is a bit of inexperience. We panicked a little bit, but I understand that and that is something we need to work on.” Didcot have earned £9,000 in prize money from the FA Cup so far and Wallbridge added: “It’s brilliant for the club because it is more money in the pot. “For the lads it is good to keep going, these games are good because it is a distraction from the pressures of the league.” “Winning makes everyone feel better and they are happy and I am pleased for them because they have worked hard.” On Tuesday, the club announced that physio Mark ‘Spicey’ Roberts would be stepping down due to work and family commitments.
Wilder’s men get back to winning ways OXFORD United returned to winning ways last weekend with a 3-1 victory at Hartlepool United. Ryan Williams, Deane Smalley and Asa Hall all scored for United as they returned to second in the League Two table.
