The White Rhinoceros The White Rhino population is divided into two categories, Northern White Rhinoceros and Southern White Rhinoceros. The Southern White Rhino has an estimated population of around 17,000 and the Northern White Rhino has very few left on Earth. All of the Northern White Rhinos now belong in captivity. Rhino Typical Weight 1,800 Kg – 2,800Kg Typical Life Expectancy 4050 Years Characteristics Hump on the back of its neck and a wide upper lip. Typical Diet Mainly grazes on grasses, can survive 35 days without any water!
Northern White Rhinoceros The Northern White Rhinoceros was previously found in the wild in places like Chad, Sudan and Uganda. Unfortunately, the Northern White Rhino population was dramatically increased in the 1970’s1980’s, due to poaching. This caused populations of around 500 to decrease to around 20. After some years, the rhino population managed to increase from 20 to around 38. Currently only 7 of this type of rhino can be found on Earth, and all of which are in captivity. The only real cause for this dramatic decrease in the population was the heavy and intensive poaching of this animal for its horns. Many sellers and poachers knew that the less rhino’s there were in the wild, the more valuable their horns were. This is what caused this rage in poaching of the Northern White Rhinoceros. Many other Rhinos are still being illegally poached today and if this continues, scientists and biologists can only expect the dramatic ending to the Northern White Rhinoceros to happen to other subspecies.
