Art History


ART 110 History of Western Art This course will highlight canonical paintings and sculptures from major periods of Western culture. This general survey class will encourage a basic appreciation, analysis, recognition and interpretation of art.

ART 112 History of Modern Design This course will explore how humans interact with everyday products, environments, and visual mediums that we encounter daily. This general survey class begins with the Arts & Crafts movement through Post-Modernism.

ART 115 History of Modern Art

This survey course will examine major figures, movements, and breakthroughs made by the Western artistic imagination in the late 19th & early 20th century.

ART 205 Art, Technology, & Society

This course is a research and writing-intensive course exploring technological developments in the fine arts since the advent of photography. Including the way artists have utilized these technologies to investigate issues of their day.

ART 375 Race, Gender, & Contemporary Art A survey of how artists explore and express personal identity, unique bias, and social marginalization. As well as how contemporary art reflects society’s evolving attitudes toward life, love, and death.


ART 134 Basic Drawing This course covers the fundamentals of drawing through the use of line, modeling, light & shadow, composition, Renaissance, and intuitive perspective with a strong emphasis on life drawing.

ART 141 Drawing & Visual Perception This studio course explores drawing from observation using a variety of media & techniques. This course will enhance one’s ability to interpret their surrounding environment and sight.

ART 130 Introduction to Design

This course is an introduction to design focusing on two-dimensional design and the process of creating assorted design-related projects that incorporate design elements like line, shape, space, value, color, pattern, and texture.

ART 131 Intro to Studio Art

This course provides students with a general understanding of concepts, theories, and language related to two- and three-dimensional studio art practice, as well as forms of time-based media.

ART 480 Advanced Studio

This is an intensive, guided independent studio course including production and research in studio practice, art or design history, and critical theory. Students will develop a number of independent projects and will be expected to complete a major research project.


Drawing & Studio Art


Painting


ART 240 Introduction to Painting This course is an introduction to painting materials and techniques with an emphasis on direct painting methods and observation. Students will investigate color, form, and composition. Demonstration, critique, and focused studio practice are primary methods of instruction.

ART 340 Intermediate Painting Along with continued development of the methods and techniques explored in ART 240, students investigate indirect painting methods and contemporary painting practices and theories. Traditional and contemporary approaches to painting the human figure are introduced and students develop independent projects and art statements.

ART 440 Advanced Painting

Under the guidance of the instructor, students pursue individual courses of study. Through a concrete synthesis of content development and technical skill, each student creates a cohesive body of paintings. Emphasis is placed on the articulation of art process, content, and philosophy.


ART 230 Introduction to Printmaking This course is an introduction to a variety of basic printmaking processes and equipment. Techniques may include monotypes, intaglio, and relief. Multiple original images are produced.

ART 330 Intermediate Printmaking This is an intensified printmaking course with an emphasis on building multi-layered and more complex images. Techniques may include photo-serigraphy, intaglio, relief and book arts.

ART 430 Advanced Printmaking

This course is an upper level printmaking course with student-proposed independent projects. Students are expected to demonstrate greater independence in working, and to produce more thematically consistent bodies of work for a final exhibition.

Sculpture


ART 224 Introduction to Sculpture An introduction to three-dimensional form, processes, amd materials. The course introduces the elements of art in a three-dimensional context with an emphasis on skill building, basic tool introduction, and exploration of materials. Demonstration, critique, and focused studio practice are primary methods of instruction.

ART 324 Intermediate Sculpture A focused exploration of sculptural techniques and strategies with an emphasis on mold making, casting, and forming with plastic materials. More indepth use of tools and technical processes as well as a special emphasis on the development of personal statements and interest.

ART 424 Advanced Sculpture

In this advanced course, students pursue individual courses of study through the creation of an overall proposal and timeline for the semester with an emphasis on artistic research, interests, and ideas. Students should demonstrate the ability to create cohesive, thematic bodies of work for exhibition and they can work independently.


ART 124 Basic Digital Photography Students will learn the basic techniques that will help them take better photographs. Framing, exposure, and lighting will be discussed as well as hands-on work with images in the digital environment.

ART 280 Intro to Photography & Digital Image This studio course explores the tools and techniques of digital photography and digital imaging. This course will explore essential foundational skills required for a career in photography. A DSLR with manual control is required.

ART 380 Contemporary Photo Strategies

This course explores the strategies, techniques, and approaches in contemporary fine art photography. The main objectives of the course are increasing control and increasing sophistication in developing projects from their initial intent to their desired outcome.

ART 460 Digital Studio

This course explores the impact of digital technology on contemporary art practice. This course includes the production of motion graphics, video production, and animation. Theory and history relating to technology will also be explored.

Design


ART 335 Advertising Design An introduction to problem solving and the basic elements of graphic design. Emphasis is placed on the development of concepts and skills in the layout of typography, illustration, and photography.

ART 350 Computer Graphics An introduction to various graphic applications on the Macintosh platflorm: Modern graphic history, layout, electronic illustration, and photographic manipulation are covered here.

ART 485 Design for the Web

This studio course explores website design and production. It includes preparing web graphics, designing & assembling web pages, and publication of websites. It covers terminology and current topics associated with the Internet, web design, and web publishing.
