01. FLEX
Angelou Donghia Foundation Scholarship Winner Flex is a restaurant and retail space designed to promote healthy life styles. The ‘farm to table’ style restaurant features healthy dishes served in a contemporary space that exudes a sense of movement and nature. The retail por on of the building specializes in yoga clothing and equipment with a ygoa studio on the second level that can also be u lized as an event space. During concept development, inspira on was found in watching yoga from an aerial view. When a person performs yoga, their spine stays straight and strong, twis ng with each new pose, while their limbs bends and flex. This inspira on was translated into a central spiral stair encased in a sculptural element. This core element can be seen throughout the en re building and is meant to unify the spaces. The restaurant side of the building features custom modeled booth sea ng, banque e sea ng, and a custom bar. Ligh ng elements over the bar and banque e sea ng are also custom designed for the spaces and pierce through the ceiling elements bending down towards the tables. The retail space is a blank canvas with neutral colors and materials that allows the products to be the ornamenta on. Ceiling elements further define areas within the retail store dieren a ng between clothing and equipment. The retail store would be a cer fied vendor for Giam, a yoga brand featuring bright colors and pa erns.

02. GMHC
Family and Immigration Law
GMHC is a law firm located in Boston that specializes in family and immigra on law. The type of law pracced at the firm is one that is emo onally charged for all par es involved and because of this the design team wanted to create relaxing and calming interior environments. During program development the design team u lized some of the square footage to give back to the clients by providing space for a children’s wai ng room and in-house therapist. The design team worked with professionals who have extensive knowledge of law firm design trends. Recently there has been a push to shi law firms away from their tradi onal hierarchy in offices and desking. Designers are encouraging law firms explore open office solu ons for their associates and to move the offices to the core of the building. Research and feedback from professionals showed insufficiencies in this solu on for a law firm, specifically with privacy and tradi on. The design team wanted to find a middle ground between the tradi onal hierarchy and open office and maintain adjacencies between partners, associates and legal administra ve assistants. Community involvement was another driving force in the design of the space. The Café on the first level is a space that can be u lized by the public a er business hours.

03. JC Harmon In Progress: Schematic Design
JC Harmon is a high school in Kansas City, Kansas. The design team did an extensive analysis of the building and users to determine the issues at the school and needs and wants of the users. They also looked at and educaonal theories and pedagogies to determine how to best design for all learning and teaching styles for the diverse popula on at JC Harmon. This school was originally designed for 800 students and currently has around 1200leading to overall overcrowding and circula on problems. During the analysis of the building the commons was found to have occupancy, ADA, and circulaon issues. The concept for the commons was derived from the circula on of the school it acts as a convergence point for all current and new circula on paths and the design team wanted to build stronger connec ons from the commons to the rest of the school. On the second level they wanted to increase circula on and usable square footage. Both levels of the commons will feature transformable sea ng op ons that allow for students and teachers to dictate their own educa on experiences. There will also be mul ple presenta on areas that can be u lized by teachers as alterna ve classrooms, but also can be used by students to prac ce their presenta on skills. A schema c design presenta on was recently given to students and teachers from JC Harmon. The feed back from the presenta on is now being applied for design development.

he Brita trade show exhibit was designed in 6 weeks meant to showcase Brita products, environmental impact and brand. The exhibit features a large sculptural piece inspired by the movement of water. The sculpture is made from 1,400 recycled water bo les and is a physical representa on of the amount of water bo les that can be saved by 3 Brita filters. The large filter showcases the filtra on process on digital screens embedded in the filter. The exhibit also has large interac ve display screens that allows the public to view the Brita website and twi er feed.
