DESIGN Philosophy

Artistic expression has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I always had a pencil in one hand and paper on the surface in front of me. I was the doodler in my class, the one who was quiet and reserved, but with screaming color in my head. I thrived in well-designed spaces and felt inspired by them. The design process intrigued me, and I knew I had to make it part of my life. Finally, it IS my life, and now it is my turn to shape the built environment. Design consumes my entire world, and has given me the deepest appreciation for the spaces that shape me. It has become my goal and purpose in life to create memorable and impactful spaces for the people who use them. I desire to create spaces that ignite the same spark I felt years ago.

steiner home - RESIDENTIAL CONCEPT STATEMENT The concept behind this design is an atom. The atom is inherently representative of the mid-century time period. The atom bomb was introduced at the height of the mid-century modern style, influencing the atomic shape into the interiors. In the Steiner home, the central nucleus represents the social gathering spaces, the electrons represent the spaces of refuge, and the outer rings show the flow and relationship between them. The home will provide a place for the Steiner’s to gather, but retreat if they desire. The flow of the spaces will be informed by the transitions between them. This will create a home that enables comfortable interaction between the users and their dwelling.

CONCEPT Atom LOCATION Tallahassee, FL DURATION 6 weeks PROGRAMS + TECHNIQUES Revit 2015, Adobe InDesign, Concepts PROJECT DESCRIPTION Design a home for a real client here in Tallahassee, FL. SKILLS LEARNED Client interaction

DESIGN GOALS 1. A large, private master suite that can serve as a refuge is extremely important. Having a private space of their own will create an escape from the kids and other chaos in the home. The pattern language #136 emphasizes the importance of “special privacy which a man and wife need together.” Therefore, the master suite will have transitional spaces to act as a “buffer”. There will be a sitting room and a short corridor before the bedroom. This will help optimize privacy.

2. Having an open floor plan creates a natural flow through spaces. The pattern language #131 explains that “The movement between rooms is as important as the rooms themselves; and its arrangement has as much effect on social interaction in the rooms, as the interiors of the rooms.” Therefore, most “public” spaces in the home will be open to one another. This will make sure that light can travel farther and sightlines will reach across other spaces.

3. Ample storage is a priority for the Steiner family because they don’t like clutter. Having a place for everything to be stored will give the owners piece of mind. Alexa Hampton provides great ideas for builtin storage that will create a clutter-free environment for the clients. Therefore, there will be many built-in’s located around the home. For example, their record storage will all be built-in shelving. It will create a streamlined look that won’t feel cluttered.

INTERIOR

The mudroom will be the first place the Steiner’s see when they enter their home, as well as the last space they see when they leave. This space will serve as a place to wipe off muddy shoes, hang up backpacks, and check outfits before leaving the house. Since this space serves as a first impression, it is important that the Steiner’s personality shines. The surfboard and plants immeditately create a welcoming and fun space.

The living room is a space where the family can watch movies together, have family meetings, and random dance parties. It is a space of fun and laughter, which is why it was important to design it that way. The base colors are neutral with pops of color in the accessories. This creates a flexible space that can be changed with the swap of a pillow or chair.

The heart of the Steiner’s home is in the kitchen. Emily loves to cook and entertain. Giving her a large kitchen with direct access to the backyard is crucial for that reason. Additionally, she will be able to watch the kids release their energy in the backyard while she cooks dinner during the 5 p.m. “witching” hour. The kitchen also features a double oven that will help prevent “traffic jams” when there are multiple people utilizing the space.

The master bedroom will be an escape for Emily and Michael to retreat to after the end of a long day. The beams on the ceiling bring down the scale, creating a cozy place to rest their heads. There is direct access to the backyard, giving them the opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee outside in the morning.

The juice bar offers a fresh and healthy alternative to soda and slushies.

This convenience store will change the way people shop. Healthy options will be offered instead of the typical convenience store fare. They have the option to pick fresh fruits and vegetables, sample and buy fresh juice, and even enjoy complimentary wifi on the patio outdoors.

Growler filling station

The growler filling station allows consumers to shop “green”. By refilling their reusable growlers, they are saving the environment one beer at a time! The beer options will be locally sourced from breweries in the area, each location will offer a unique selection! In order to entice consumers to use this resource, free growlers will be provided to new members of the “GROWler” club. Each growler filled will be accounted for, and when the customer reaches 10 refills, their next refill is on the house!

RIP CURL CORPORATE OFFICE CONCEPT Water LOCATION Denver, CO DURATION 6 weeks PROJECT SCOPE 10,000 sf

PROGRAMS + TECHNIQUES Revit 2015, Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign PROJECT DESCRIPTION Create an office space for a company in Denver, CO. SKILLS LEARNED 3D Modeling + Rendering

CONCEPT Water is one of the biggest and most important elements that connects us as humans. It also happens to be the vessel in which we surf, swim, and sail. The purtiy and flow of water helps reinforce the characteristics of the space. The cool relaxing colors, curvilinear lines, and visual texture of the design expresses the true essence of water.

OFFICE DESIGN RESEARCH + SPACE PLANNING FIFTYTHREE OFFICE BY +ADD, NEW YORK CITY FiftyThree is a paper and pencil company that focuses on good quality and well designed products. The architects, +ADD and Laura Gonzalez Fierro renovated the existing structure. The interior of the building is wide open and emulates the feeling of a New York City loft. Industrial and minimal, the design is sleek and contemporary. The main goal that the designers wanted to create was a "very honest and open layout that promoted teamwork and collaboration." Spaces were implemented to promote collaboration and prevent people from spending all day at their desks. BUBBLE FLOWS

BLOCKING DIAGRAMS

IMPLICATIONS This space evokes that open, fun, and carefree feeling that I want to emulate in the Rip Curl office space. The long rows of open desking, open aired spaces, and touchdown spaces that literally scream creativity are all components that will translate well into the Rip Curl office. Even though a matrix structure promotes seperation of departments, I will only be seperating them visually, not physically. With this open desking idea, I can do that. For example, each row of desks represents a different department. By seperating them visually, we give them the opportunity to collaborate. Touchdown spaces that help promote creativity are especially important.Giving departments touchdown spaces helps them get away from their desks for a while and gives them the opportunity to work in a space that is a little different. A space that is just as important as the desk area is the break room. Giving employees a space to rewind wll increase their productivity when they get back to their desk. A refreshed mind can do wonders for work!

FINAL FLOOR PLAN - FIRST FLOOR

Interior spaces The catwalk was specifically designed to make viewing the ‘flow rider’ easy and accessible. The recpetion desk was designed with the Rip Curl logo in mind. By mimicing the shape of the logo, the brand is quickly recognized upon entry.

The reception area is the first impression of the space. With that in mind, branding is very important. The custom reception desk mimics the form of the rip curl logo and the company name is illuminated directly behind it.

The waiting area is meant to be a relaxed and tranquil space. Users are in close proximity to the conference room, so meetings are easily accessible from the waiting room.

Surfing in Denver can present quite a challenge. In order to provide clients, product testers, and employees an opportunity to try Rip Curl’s surf boards, a flow rider will be installed to meet their needs.

The employee workspace is open and relaxed, encouraging collaboration and employee interaction. The perimeter is lined with the director and manager offices, the offices are enclosed with glass to create an environment that is open and friendly.
