In this, our third season, we are refining our programming, improving our patron services and fulfilling our promise to make Pittsfield the exciting “heart of the Berkshires.”

We keep the words engagement, entertainment and enlightenment front of mind as we build each season of programming for our audiences. Whether it’s providing area schoolchildren with programs that enhance their curriculum and skills, or seeking programs for adult audiences, our primary objective is to find performances compelling enough to make people want to come to the Colonial. The theater is first and foremost a place in which audiences enjoy themselves. It is also our goal to enrich lives with theatrical experiences that stimulate discussion, introspection and curiosity. I hope that this Season Guide will be a starting point for you. Think of it as a book of opportunities for good times with friends and family. MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL

®

WED 11/19/08 7:30PM A: $45 B: $25 “You’ll love it…It’s hilarious…Go see it!” –Joy Behar, The View Since March 2001, the hilarious show Menopause The Musical ® has entertained and inspired women across the country and internationally. Written by Jeanie Linders, Menopause The Musical ® includes twenty-five re-lyricized tunes from the ’60s and ’70s, and culminates with a salute to women who are experiencing The Change. Set in a department store, the musical features four women—with seemingly nothing in common but a black lace bra—who meet by chance. The musical pokes fun at hot flashes, memory loss, mood swings, wrinkles, night sweats and eating binges. The show’s intended message is that menopause is a passage—a normal stage in every woman’s life—which should no longer be The Silent Passage. Each week, nearly 35,000 women of all ages and stages find their spirits lifted by the show’s light-hearted look at menopause.

TUES 4/14/09 7:30PM A: $30 B: $20 “laughs, tears, and most importantly, a breath of fresh air that brings motherhood back to what ultimately matters most...Bravo!” –broadwayworld.com After an incredibly successful run off-Broadway, Mother Load is gearing up for a national tour! Modern motherhood is not for sissies. In a world where a toddler’s birthday party must be catered, a stroller costs $800 and there’s a new danger in your child’s toy box every week, how can a mother keep from losing her mind? From prenatal yoga to preschool interviews, the heroine of this show struggles to throw off the “mother load” of unrealistic expectations, ignore the competitive “sanctimommies” lurking in every playgroup and somehow find the time to enjoy her kids. Anyone who has fed dinosaur chicken nuggets to their kids three times this week will identify with the guilt this show lampoons, and fellow perfectionists will cheer as this mom frees herself from it. You’ll love Mother Load whether you are a mother or just have one!

The Machine’s stellar musicianship, dramatic lighting, multimedia accompaniments and passionate delivery of inventive set lists put it above and beyond the rest.

“A show you want to dance to! The score is the best kind of blast from the past!” –Cincinnati Enquirer In 1984, the movie Footloose, starring Kevin Bacon, captured the heart of America. With its youthful spirit, dazzling dance and electrifying music, Footloose launched a dance craze that spread across the nation. More than twenty years later, this explosive movie is bursting onto the live stage. Footloose tells the story of a Chicago boy who moves to a Midwestern town with his mom, only to discover a conservative world where rock music and dancing have been banned. Before long, the youth of the town are teaching the elders that there is no sin in being young, having fun and getting to dance! The show’s classic ’80s hits include “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Almost Paradise,” “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” and, of course, the unforgettable “Footloose.” Footloose! celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

The Best New Artist Grammy for 1991 soon followed. Cohn’s short-story songwriting style is heavily influenced by Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne, and he is often named among the most personal and introspective lyricists of his generation. On past tours, the Drepung Loseling monks have performed with Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, the Beastie Boys and the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, to name a few. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the tour has three basic purposes: to make a contribution to world peace and healing, to generate greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization and to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India. “So far ahead of other traditional bands...there is scarcely any basis for comparison.” –The New York Times

W.A. Mozart, Composer Lorenzo Da Ponte, Librettist Kathleen Kelly, Conductor Gregory Keller, Stage Director

The New Black Eagle Jazz Band plays a vast repertoire of traditional jazz, including early New Orleans, 1920s Chicago, 1930s small band, the revival of the 1940s and 1950s jazz and original pieces written by a number of band members. The group’s arrangements include “The Mooche” by Duke Ellington, “Grandpa’s Spells” by Jelly Roll Morton, “New Rag” by Scott Joplin, “East St. Louis Toodle-oo” by Duke Ellington and many more.

Ryan McKinny, Figaro Suzanne Ramo, Susanna Tamara Wilson, Countess Almaviva Liam Bonner, Count Almaviva Maureen O’Flynn, Cherubino Jason Hardy, Dr. Bartolo Tables are turning on the “droigt du seigneur.” Mistaken identities and bedroom disguises conspire to turn the order of a palace on its head. A simple marriage planned for an ordinary day comically and poignantly unravels. Servants manipulate masters, women outsmart men. Most importantly, intelligence and love triumph over wealth and power. The optimism of this play and its belief in the human spirit—all brilliantly expressed in music and lyrics by Mozart and Da Ponte—are still fresh and inspiring to 21st-century ears.

Fear will be tempered by fascination as vampires descend upon The Colonial Theatre. Curiosity will be excited by the elaborate lobby atmosphere that leads in to a world of terror and great romance. Dracula, a ballet in two acts created by Director-Choreographer Darrell Pucciarello, transforms the Colonial into a Transylvanian castle for this family adventure. The original haunting score by David Edwards, matched by the Gothic sets of Carl Sprague, make this a Halloween experience unlike any other.

“Their live performance makes ‘Riverdance’ look like Lawrence Welk re-runs.” –Time Out New York

SUN 12/07/08 7:30PM A: $40 B: $25

Leahy returns to the Colonial’s stage to perform a holiday concert filled with favorite Celtic medleys and traditional Christmas carols. A Canadian powerhouse of eight musical brothers and sisters, who have been playing music together their entire lives, this family of instrumentalists, singers and dancers brings a rare level of originality and musicianship to the stage. Leahy’s most recent American tour included a sold-out stop at the Colonial, and audiences were so enthralled that the group remains the Colonial’s most requested return performance. Pure and authentic, Leahy continues to be one of Canada’s most sought-after exports.

“The Klezmatics aren’t just the best band in the klezmer vanguard... they rank among the best bands on the planet.” –Time Out New York The Klezmatics have forever transcended genres, blending klezmer with aching shtetl melodies, raucous Latin stomps, wild jazz riffs and provocative Arabic, African, American and Balkan rhythms. The Klezmatics present a contagious celebration of Hanukkah—a marriage of the group’s soulful and ebullient Jewish roots to Woody Guthrie’s poignantly mesmerizing and newly discovered lyrics. This program highlights the band’s two most recent CD releases: the multicultural folk sounds of Wonder Wheel and the ecstatically danceable, hoedown-worthy Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah. Special guests include acclaimed Celtic singer Susan McKeown and multi-instrumentalist Boo Reiners.

MON 10/06/08

THURS 10/16/08

The Eckerd Theater Company presents Vote?, a timely play from award-winning playwright Eric Coble about the voting rights of all Americans. The story takes place on Election Day 2006. Nicole Harrison, an eighteen-year-old, has registered to vote but has no intention of casting a ballot. As her friend argues the importance of voting, Nicole slips back through time into the midst of the Revolutionary War. She is tossed through time and stands beside women, minorities and young people who are all claiming their constitutional right to the power that Nicole casually dismisses. Through her journey, we all learn just how many shoulders we stand on every time we step into the voting booth.

From Armenia, twenty-year-old Narek Hakhnazaryan is one of the winners of the 2008 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. At the age of twelve, Hakhnazaryan began studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Alexey Seleznyov. He is a laureate of several international competitions, including First Prize in the 2006 Aram Khachaturian International Competition in Armenia and Fifth Prize at the 2007 Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow.

NAGATA SHACHU: NEW TRADITION FOR THE TAIKO

THURS 11/13/08

THURS 2/12/09

Norton Juster’s beloved children’s book, The Phantom Tollbooth, is given full musical treatment in this acclaimed stage version. Aided by his trusty time-keeping dog Tock, Milo successfully brings harmony to the Land of Wisdom and learns many things about words and numbers along his journey. Perhaps the most important lesson he takes with him is that everything we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone. When he returns home, he realizes that there is never a reason to be bored in a world full of so many things to discover.

Nagata Shachu has enthralled audiences with its mesmerizing and heartpounding performances of the Japanese drum (taiko) since its formation in 1998. Rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, Nagata Shachu combines thunderous, primal drumbeats with subtle, intricate rhythms, producing a wide spectrum of sound using a vast array of Japanese taikos, including the massive O-Daiko, gongs, bells, wooden clappers, shakers and bamboo flutes. Under the direction of Kiyoshi Nagata, the ensemble’s performances combine unbounded spirit with the highest levels of musicianship and discipline—and the result is an unforgettable experience that is both powerful in expression and heartfelt in its sincerity.

INCA SON: MUSIC AND DANCE OF THE ANDES

THE MIDNIGHT RIDE OF PAUL REVERE

FRI 4/03/09

THURS 4/30/09

Inca Son, dressed in authentic and colorful Inca costumes and Andean attire, introduces the traditional dances and beautiful melodies and rhythms of Andean and Latin American music. With its distinctive sounds on the pan flutes, Inca Son performs traditional songs and original compositions on many instruments the group members have made themselves. Since its earliest beginnings, Inca Son has been a band with a mission: to preserve and instill appreciation for its cultural legacy through the international language of music and dance.

TheatreworksUSA’s The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere tells the universal story of how ordinary people can make a difference. In Boston, a simple artisan named Paul Revere etches out a humble living as a silversmith. Americans and British alike hail the exquisite artistry of his work. But when Revere’s revolutionary friends John Hancock and Samuel Adams pressure him to take a stand against British tyranny, he hesitates. Supporting the American cause would mean losing valuable business from his British customers and would also risk the safety of his family. Revere must make a choice: to do what is easy, or to do what is right. This musical makes American history accessible and exciting through a unique combination of music, drama and humor.

A public performance is offered at 7:30PM. Tickets are available for purchase through The Colonial Theatre Ticket Office.
