Welcome
WELCOME COLONIAL’S
Dear Colonial Theatre Patron, Welcome to our house of dreams. The people of the Berkshires dreamed that this theater—with one of the most glorious pasts of any theater in America—would once again ring with the sounds of music and laughter. They dreamed about opening the world for their children and enriching their own lives with new sights and sounds. Then, we all worked hard together to see those dreams come true.
The artists who visit realize that The Colonial Theatre, nestled in the incomparable Berkshires, offers them far more than just a beautiful “frame” for their talents. They sense from the moment they arrive that this theater is fulfilling a community’s dream. They see the care that has gone into every aspect of each presentation. They feel the sincere welcome of the Colonial’s staff and they watch the dedicated volunteers enthusiastically prepare for the arrival of our guests. We are thrilled you are with us today. We know that you will think of the Colonial as your special performance center and will visit often with family and friends. Your friendship is treasured by everyone at The Colonial Theatre. Thank you for your support; the Colonial is operating for you and because of you. Warmest regards,

Dear Friends, As we enter our third season, we all have much about which to be proud. Last season, hundreds of performers entertained thousands of patrons at shows that ranged from CATS to Ladysmith Black Mambazo to The Velveteen Rabbit—truly something for all tastes and age ranges. The economic development of Pittsfield continues with the Colonial and others leading the renaissance. This year, The Colonial Theatre Association received the Paul E. Tsongas Award for the historic restoration of The Colonial Theatre. The award recipients are determined to be true leaders in the preservation movement in Massachusetts. The Colonial was recognized specifically for its vision and for the example of how historic restoration can inspire revitalization at the community level. The Colonial accepted this honor on behalf of the entire Berkshire community. Your Colonial Theatre’s early success bodes well for its future, but the challenge is ongoing. This year, like every year, ticket sales and income from the rental of the theater, advertising and concessions will account for just over half of the total revenue needed to cover operating, programming and community outreach expenses. We need your help. In addition to purchasing tickets, please join our new Friends of the Colonial membership program. Become an Encore Society member or find the benefit level that works for you (see the options on page 34), and help ensure that your favorite shows will continue to be presented at the Colonial, at reasonable prices. Come to The Colonial Theatre. Bring your family and friends. Enjoy your theater and its performances. Without you in the audience, the show cannot go on! See You There!

for
Performing Arts Kids
Education programs are a fundamental component of the Colonial’s mission to serve the community. The diverse Performing Arts for Kids events allow students across Berkshire County and beyond to experience the arts. Diverse, educational and entertaining, these programs are ideally suited to reinforce classroom curriculum while fostering an understanding of and appreciation for the performing arts. The ticket price for these programs is currently $5.00 per student, which is heavily subsidized by the Colonial to ensure the events are as accessible and inclusive as possible for Berkshire County schoolchildren and schools. Even with the reduced ticket price, there is still significant need for additional funding to ensure that cost is never a barrier to a child’s opportunity to be exposed to and learn from the arts.
We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the following individuals who, through their generosity and kindness, have established new avenues for enabling Berkshire County schoolchildren and schools in fiscal need to attend The Colonial Theatre’s Performing Arts for Kids events. Ruth and Nick Boraski recently established The Ruth P. and Nicholas Boraski Educational Endowment Scholarship Fund. The Boraskis, Berkshire County residents and long-time advocates of the arts and education, have stepped forward with a significant legacy endowment fund that will touch the lives of thousands of schoolchildren for years to come. The Boraskis are highly regarded in the community for their generous and giving spirit in support of education.

serving on the Colonial’s Board of Trustees. Their generosity enables the Colonial to continue to expose audiences to the up-and-coming world-class talent of these young classical musicians. TD Banknorth contributed $10,000 to the Colonial’s Performing Arts for Kids education program. Thanks to their support, Berkshire County schoolchildren in financial need will be able to attend performances. The foresight and generosity of Ruth and Nick Boraski, Nancy Vale, Mary Jane and Joe Handler and TD Banknorth will continue to touch the lives of thousands of Berkshire County schoolchildren and their families for years to come, enriching their educational experience, opening new doors for growth and learning and widening horizons.
Nancy Vale, wife of nationally known actor and television personality, Michael Vale, who passed away in 2005, will be establishing a Charitable Remainder Trust to be named The Michael and Nancy Vale Educational Scholarship Fund. Nancy, now a full-time resident of Berkshire County, hopes this fund will serve as inspiration for others in the community to join her in support of The Colonial Theatre’s Performing Arts for Kids events.

VOTE?
Sponsored by Petricca Industries MON 10/06/08 The Eckerd Theater Company presents Vote?, a timely play from award-winning playwright Eric Coble about the voting rights of all Americans. The story takes place on Election Day 2006. Nicole Harrison, an eighteen-year-old, has registered to vote but has no intention of casting a ballot. As her friend argues the importance of voting, Nicole slips back through time into the midst of the Revolutionary War. She is tossed through time and stands beside women, minorities and young people who are all claiming their constitutional right to the power that Nicole casually dismisses. Through her journey, we all learn just how many shoulders we stand on every time we step into the voting booth. Ian Beck
NAREK HAKHNAZARYAN, CELLIST Sponsored by Joseph and Mary Jane Handler THURS 10/16/08 From Armenia, twenty-year-old Narek Hakhnazaryan is one of the winners of the 2008 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. At the age of twelve, Hakhnazaryan began studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Alexey Seleznyov. He is a laureate of several international competitions, including First Prize in the 2006 Aram Khachaturian International Competition in Armenia and Fifth Prize at the 2007 Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow.
THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH THURS 11/13/08 Norton Juster’s beloved children’s book, The Phantom Tollbooth, is given full musical treatment in this acclaimed stage version. Aided by his trusty time-keeping dog Tock, Milo successfully brings harmony to the Land of Wisdom and learns many things about words and numbers along his journey. Perhaps the most important lesson he takes with him is that everything we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone. When he returns home, he realizes that there is never a reason to be bored in a world full of so many things to discover.

GARRY KRINSKY’S: TOYING WITH SCIENCE THURS 1/15/09 Toying with Science is a fast-paced, dynamic program that combines circus skills, mime, original music and audience involvement in the exploration of the scientific principles of gravity, leverage, fulcrums and simple machines. Krinsky brings several science-based toys to life with motion, music, humor and insight. He grants audience members a chance at stardom by inviting a few to join him on stage and participate in juggling or balancing activities.
NAGATA SHACHU: NEW TRADITION FOR THE TAIKO THURS 2/12/09 Nagata Shachu has enthralled audiences with its mesmerizing and heart-pounding performances of the Japanese drum (taiko) since its formation in 1998. Rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, Nagata Shachu combines thunderous, primal drumbeats with subtle, intricate rhythms, producing a wide spectrum of sound using a vast array of Japanese taikos, including the massive O-Daiko, gongs, bells, wooden clappers, shakers and bamboo flutes. Under the direction of Kiyoshi Nagata, the ensemble’s performances combine unbounded spirit with the highest levels of musicianship and discipline—and the result is an unforgettable experience that is both powerful in expression and heartfelt in its sincerity. A public performance is offered at 7:30PM. Tickets are available for purchase through The Colonial Theatre Ticket Office.
PIUS CHEUNG, MARIMBIST Sponsored by Joseph and Mary Jane Handler THURS 2/26/09 Chinese-Canadian marimbist Pius Cheung is one of the winners of the 2008 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Twenty-five-year-old Cheung captivates audiences with performances of compositions by contemporary composers, his own compositions and arrangements of the classics. INCA SON: MUSIC AND DANCE OF THE ANDES FRI 4/03/09 Inca Son, dressed in authentic and colorful Inca costumes and Andean attire, introduces the traditional dances and beautiful melodies and rhythms of Andean and Latin American music. With its distinctive sounds on the pan flutes, Inca Son performs traditional songs and original compositions on many instruments the group members have made themselves. Since its earliest beginnings, Inca Son has been a band with a mission: to preserve and instill appreciation for its cultural legacy through the international language of music and dance. A public performance is offered at 7:30PM. Tickets are available for purchase through The Colonial Theatre Ticket Office.
CHARLOTTE’S WEB MON 4/06/09 TheatreworksUSA’s production of Charlotte’s Web is based on E.B. White’s loving story of the friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a little gray spider named Charlotte. As the tale begins, we discover Wilbur in a tight spot. He is desperately trying to avoid winding up as pork chops! Charlotte works on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman into sparing her friend by spinning a miracle web with the words “Some Pig.” With her efforts, Charlotte not only makes Wilbur a prize pig, but she also ensures his place on the farm forever. This treasured tale, featuring endearing farm animals, explores bravery, selfless love and the true meaning of friendship. Two public performances are offered on 4/05/09 at 2PM & 4PM. Tickets are available for purchase through The Colonial Theatre Ticket Office.
THE MIDNIGHT RIDE OF PAUL REVERE THURS 4/30/09 TheatreworksUSA’s The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere tells the universal story of how ordinary people can make a difference. In Boston, a simple artisan named Paul Revere etches out a humble living as a silversmith. Americans and British alike hail the exquisite artistry of his work. But when Revere’s revolutionary friends John Hancock and Samuel Adams pressure him to take a stand against British tyranny, he hesitates. Supporting the American cause would mean losing valuable business from his British customers and would also risk the safety of his family. Revere must make a choice: to do what is easy, or to do what is right. This musical makes American history accessible and exciting through a unique combination of music, drama and humor.

Here’s to staying power. In 2001, a 150-year old company was reborn into a new organization called Berkshire Life Insurance Company of America, an integral member of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America family. And, while we’re still a relatively young enterprise, our employees are by no means new to the Berkshires. For a century-and-a-half, our predecessor was a proud member of a proud community: the people of Pittsfield and Berkshire County. Combine that wealth of experience with an innovative spirit fostered by our productive collaboration with our parent company, Guardian, and the sum is a powerful contributor to the continued economic health of the region—and continued support of the local institutions like this one that make the Berkshires such a special place.

Colonial’s Amazing The Colonial Theatre opened its doors on September 28, 1903, and quickly became one of the Berkshire’s liveliest and most popular cultural institutions. Pittsfield was a vibrant, growing center of commerce and industry and an increasingly popular tourist destination for vacationers. Crane Paper was expanding rapidly, scores of new companies were launching, General Electric Company had recently purchased the local Stanley Electric Manufacturing Company and Pittsfield was unquestionably on a roll. From its opening until it became primarily a movie theater in the mid-1930s, the Colonial was one of the premier playhouses in America. It hosted more stars of the American theater than any comparable theater still in existence. William Gillette, Eubie Blake, Al Jolson, George M. Cohan, Lillian Russell, John and Ethel Barrymore, Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne, Helen Hayes, Ed Wynn, Billie Burke, Will Rogers and Sarah Bernhardt are just a few of the bestknown stars who appeared on this stage.
History
In 1952, the Colonial was concealed behind the temporary walls and ceiling in Miller Supply Co., which, from a restoration point of view, was profoundly fortunate. For nearly fifty years, the grand interior existed in a sort of semi-sealed time capsule, thus preserving one of the few theaters of the period. Of the more than 150 playhouses designed by noted theater architect J.B. McElfatrick, the Colonial is one of nearly a dozen still standing; the New Victory Theater in New York City, of which the Colonial is almost a twin, was also designed by McElfatrick.
The Colonial Theatre was designated a National Historic Treasure by the National Park Service in 1998. In 2001, the theater was purchased from the Miller family by The Colonial Theatre Association, and the temporary walls and ceilings were removed. After years of design and planning, the extensive restoration, from the initial demolition to opening night in August 2006, took approximately twenty-two months, and preserved and
reinstated all historically significant architectural and design features.
Since the Colonial’s reopening in 2006, visitors have been awed by the entrance, the Tennessee marble lining the lobby, the auditorium front, the elaborately decorated boxes and balcony, the exquisitely painted ornamental detail, the meticulously crafted custom plasterwork, the uppermost gallery with rare highbacked “pew” seating and the “sail vault” over the proscenium, which includes a central mural representing art and music. People came from all over Berkshire County and the surrounding area during the early 20th century to attend performances at the Colonial. It was a favorite destination and central gathering place for residents and visitors alike. Today, the Colonial’s prominence continues. The theater maintains its strong community heritage and symbolizes the enormous spectrum of possibilities for growth and new vitality.

The Colonial opened on Monday, September 28, with a sold-out performance of DeKoven’s Robin Hood by the Bostonians, featuring famed star Henry Barnabee. Pictured: 1903 postcard featuring the facade of The Colonial Theatre

Touring productions changed almost nightly and featured concerts, operas, plays, boxing shows and even horse racing. The Great Creatore’s Italian Orchestra and the John Philip Sousa Orchestra made their first of many appearances, as did famous actors Maude Adams, John and Ethel Barrymore, William Faversham, William Gillette, Chauncy Olcott, Lillian Russell and Al Jolson. Ben Hur featured an actual chariot race on the stage with eight horses. Pictured: Ethel Barrymore
The Colonial was purchased from the Sullivan brothers by the newly formed Pittsfield Theatre Co., a group of local businessmen and engineers that included Daniel England, John Kelly and E.H. Eaton. Noted players such as George Arliss, Billie Burke, Julia Marlowe, Blanche Ring, Will Rogers, E.H. Sothern and Laurette Taylor made numerous appearances. Pictured: Will Rogers
1915
The Pittsfield Theatre Co. sold the Colonial to Goldstein Brothers Amusement Co. of Springfield, Mass. Performances included Walter Hampden in Hamlet and Sarah Bernhardt as Joan of Arc. In the early 1920s the Colonial hosted dozens of stars, including Irene Dunne, Anna Pavlova, the Ballets Russes and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Pictured: Sarah Bernhardt

1934
The Depression and the reform of American theater labor practices curtailed the popular Broadway Touring Co. One of the Colonial’s final productions was The Royal Family, starring Thelma Ritter and Rex Fall. 1934 marked the closing of the Colonial. During this time it was transformed into a first-run movie palace.
1937
The Colonial reopened as a first-run movie house. Occasionally touring shows also played the Colonial, including Abie’s Irish Rose, Life with Father, Dear Ruth, The Hasty Heart and Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which made its last appearance at the Colonial in September 1945.
2004
Demolition began for the Colonial’s restoration.
2006
49,500 people attended more than 140 events during the Colonial’s inaugural season which kicked off on August 29, 2006, with eight performances of Broadway’s smash hit musical Rent. Pictured: Rent

The Colonial permanently closed as a movie house.

2007
Singer-songwriter James Taylor chose the Colonial to record and film his “One Man Band” CD/DVD. Tickets sold out quickly for the two live performances.
1927
The Colonial presented Eubie Blake in his own production of Shuffle Along. George M. Cohan appeared in his hit, The Song and Dance Man. In a curtain speech Cohan praised Pittsfield and the Colonial as “the best theater in America.” A teen-age Helen Hayes, Alfred Lunt, Sir Harry Lauder and the incomparable comedian/ playwright Ed Wynn also appeared in the mid-'20s. The Colonial Theatre was placed up for auction in November. George Miller was the lowest bidder on the property but won because he was the only bidder who wanted to preserve the theater. One final performance, Curse You, Jack Dalton, was given by the Pittsfield Town Players on December 21, 1952.

Preservation Massachusetts Paul E. Tsongas Award Recipient, 2008 “The Tsongas Award honors those who are helping us take preservation into the 21st century and beyond. We recognize these individuals and organizations for their leadership and excellence in preservation, but also for their vision and their often unwavering dedication in the face of much uncertainty. The Colonial Theatre, along with the other four Tsongas Awarded projects, embodies the spirit behind the Tsongas Award. The impact the Colonial has made upon Pittsfield is evident and serves as an excellent example for how historic preservation can inspire revitalization at the community level.” –Jim Igoe, President of Preservation Massachusetts

Become A Corporate Sponsor Corporate sponsorship is a terrific way to maximize exposure and communicate your message to the more than 60,000 patrons attending events at The Colonial Theatre each year. A corporate sponsorship can also highlight your support for the type of programming your target audience values—“personalizing” and connecting your business and its message in a unique and creative way. Sponsorship packages can be customized to suit your budget, your business and its needs. For additional information, please contact Sally Elizabeth Evans, director of development, at (413) 448-8084 x19. 56

The Colonial Theatre is proud to maintain two Steinway Concert pianos for the enjoyment of our audiences. Our principal concert instrument is a completely restored nine foot Hamburg Steinway, Model D that was originally built in 1894, during the “Gilded Age” of Steinway in Hamburg, Germany. The complete piano restoration was commissioned by Flynn Pianos, LLC owned by Terry Flynn and his partner Kim Muller of Freiburg, Germany. Mr. James Chervenak made a gift of this piano, to the Colonial, in memory of his wife Françoise Nunnallé.
We encourage you to take this program book home with you (share it with family and friends) but, should you already have one at home, please do recycle it on your way out of the theater.
