The Vortex

Sandusky: Adaptive Re-use Project

Fall 2014 The Vortex aims to bridge the surrounding areas by meshing business, food, education, and organic space into a proactive, hands-on learning center that is fun for all ages. A focus of sustainability, and emphasis on water management, prompts a subject that is important to the culture of Sandusky, and its visitors.

PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT

PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT

The aim of this Gastronomy Center is pull in people from all over Firenze and give them a taste of what the city is all about. This facility was inspired by the concept of literally pulling people onto and into the building. This is achieved by taking the paths people are likely to be traveling on and changing their direction. All main access corridors have an intriguing entrance either up and onto the top of the building, or through two interior spaces.

Led By Design

Ocracoke: Retreat for the Visually Impaired

7

Fall 2013

This retreat, located on the Beaches of North Carolina, uses the site’s natural surroundings to lead people through the complex. Individual buildings consist of bedrooms, craft/activity rooms, and a performance stage. The placement of the buildings organizes the flow of the wind. The people walking through the space can conclude where they are based on the feel of the wind. Similarly, the texture, and porosity of the building changes based on its displacement from the water. Topography, sun, and shadow are also taken advantage of.

Shifted

Akron: Recreation Center

Spring 2013

Street Elevation

1st Floor Plan This project was based off the type of action that happens in a recreation center. It involves a lot of moving and shifting. When one shift occurs it causes shifts in other parts of the buildings, and every shift results in altered space with potential. The surrounding buildings shifted this rec center. The altered spaces became areas for gathering or viewing.

Direct Connection

Kent: Food Bank

Fall 2012

The focus of my project was the bond between different spaces. Chemical bonds are thick or strong connections uniting two things. Most of the spaces in the food bank have a bond/relationship between them whether it’s how they use each other, work with each other, or that the both have similar uses. Some of these bonds are larger or smaller than others. 11

Other Projects Sketch-up Models

Shopping Center Sketch-up Summer 2012 This project is intended to be along a heavily walked street. Angles and Protrusions fade the hard edge of building and sidewalk. The entrance comes out onto the walking path, encouraging people to enter the space. The pattern that wraps the building designates the change in material, allows openings, and forms changes in depth. These subtle protrusions create beautiful texture and shadow on exterior and interior of the space. Residence Sketch-up Fall, 2012 This is an interior view of a residence. The back yard patio extrudes into and out of the space, creating a continuation from nature to the interior of the space. The materials and subtle changes in lines define spaces. A stone fire place extrudes through both floors and is able to be seen from all rooms in the residence. The central location of the fireplace grounds and balances the feel of the space. The second floor has a hall that wraps the living room, allowing an open feel to the space, along with many visual connections.
