WHEN WORDS UNRAVEL
My research process consisted of reading about how the N-word has evolved throughout history. This included researching how this word impacted events like the Civil Rights movements and Hip-Hop music. The interviewing process informed how this design should speak to how divisive, and yet uniting this work can be depending on who says it.

HAWTHORNE ELEMENTARY SPANISH DUAL LANGUAGE SCHOOL brand Identity | visual systems As a part of a design for public issues course, Our team created a brand identity and visual system for a non-profit organization. We worked with Hawthorne Elementary, a K–5 Spanish Immersion school where students are taught equally in both Spanish and English. Our goal was to design an identity that reflected Hawthorne’s dual language approach and energetic spirit. Awards: AIGA Louisville The Show, 2020
Our research process included taking several trips to Hawthorne and speaking with their principal and faculty about their goals as the only full Spanish immersion school in Louisville. Our team used collaborative design principles to meet Hawthorne’s goals and create an exciting new brand identity. TAYLOR SIMONE HAWTHORNE ELEMENTARY BRAND IDENTITY
I was tasked with designing the logo for Hawthorne’s new brand identity. This logo was inspired by Hawthorne’s unique dual language approach. A major objective for Hawthorne was to have an identity that reflects the friendly and energetic at Hawthorne. This led the design process for creating a new logo for Hawthorne.

Since CANNA is committed to addressing restorative justice, in addition to restorative health benefits, campaigns may be created to address this issue. This is an example of a campaign that is bringing light the racial injustice of the cannabis industry where 46.9% of the people incarcerated for marijuana related drug offenses are Black and Brown people.

FAMILY SCHOLAR HOUSE research | site-mapping | prototyping | ui/ux design | social impact design | brand identity This project began as a website redesign for a local non-profit organization. I chose to redesign the site for Family Scholar House. The mission of Family Scholar House is to end the cycle of poverty by empowering families and youth to succeed in education. The goal of this project was to prioritize the user experience of parents that could join Family Scholar House.
Family Scholar House’s current site had room for potential in terms of user navigation. A lot of important information about the resources FSH offers was hard to find. With the users in mind, some restructuring of the current site was necessary.

BLACK WRITERS POSTER SERIES illustration | social impact design | research This project began as a week long exercise of exploring history and poster design. This poster series displays the importance of literature in Black history through three instrumental Black writers: Langston Hughes, Audre Lorde, and Ta-Nehsi Coates. Awards: AIGA Blue Ridge Flux, 2020
The Langston Hughes series is inspired by works created during the Harlem Renaissance. This period was dominated by the influence of African art like flat shapes and bold colors. Hughes subject matter dealt with issues facing the Black community such as segregation and lynchings.
ABOUT THE WRITERS
TAYLOR SIMONE
The Audre Lorde series is inspired by Lorde’s contributions to intersectionality as it relates to feminism. She believed in a feminism that considered the intersections of identity and that was an important of her writing. These posters reflect the idea that differences don’t have to equal injustice and inequality.
Much of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ writing focuses on how white supremacy impacts the Black-American experiences. This poster series is inspired by this subject matter, specifically the issues of police brutality and the unfair criminal justice system.
