WELCOME A WORD FROM THE CENTRE MANAGER - DAVE SIMISTER Welcome to issue 5 of Your Square Magazine and it feels quite strange to say that. The year has gone so quickly it doesn’t seem very long since we launched our first issue and we are now on to our second year of ‘ground breaking’ events in the Square. So in this issue we look to all the exciting things we have planned over the Summer as the weather looks like it will at last be in our favour. Last month we celebrated Spring with a visit from

the Minions, Mr Yippadee and CBeebies’ Rachel Keatley. Mr Yippadee went down so well that we have invited him back when Mr Bloom comes to see us again in August. We also welcomed our new radio partners to the square - Key 103 who will be joining us for all our events this year. The Summer activities will begin on Saturday 28th May when we are once again running our ‘Let’s Get Active’ day. We will also have some extra sur-

prises in store, on top of all the popular events that ran last year. As I have already mentioned, Mr Bloom is coming to see us again in August and we also have the Chilli Festival planned to take us into Autumn - but more about those later in the issue. In the meantime, enjoy spending the vouchers and enjoying all the special offers in this issue and we look forward to welcoming you down to ‘the Square’ very soon.

AGNES HOPKINS: THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Swinton Square’s adopted charity is the ‘Agnes Hopkins Memorial Centre’ on Clarendon Road. The centre is a place for older residents to meet and offers a range of activities from Craft classes to Tai-Chi, Pilates and Meditation! With money raised by visitors to The Square, the centre has bought a smashing new sign and noticeboard. Thanks to everyone who donated!

SWINTON LEISURE A STAR DROPS IN! The North West Junior Snooker Academy at Swinton Leisure were treated to a surprise visit from United starlet Marcus Rashford who called in to one of their practice sessions in May. The kids at the Academy are coached by Grade A’ world snooker coach Red Davies and they have had plenty of success over the years. Just recently, the 13 year old Kayden Brierley became the North West’s under 16 Champion. The Academy runs sessions on Wednesdays (5-7pm) and Saturdays (11am1pm). The two hour sessions cost just £6, including expert coaching. For more information, please call Swinton Leisure on 0161 794 0672

SPRING IN THE SQUARE A SUPERHERO CELEBRATION! Our ďŹ rst major event of 2016 took place over two days at the beginning of April and, while the weather was miserable, those who came along certainly weren’t! Our guests stars were Mr Yippadee and Rebecca Keatley from CBeebies who provided great entertainment under the cover of the market square while Swinton Square favourites The Minions and Frozen performed on the Key 103 stage. There was a super-hero (and villain!) theme to the event with Batman and Optimus Prime representing the forces of good against some very convincing members of the dark side. It was great to see the Key103 team also getting into the Superhero spirit and raising funds for charity.

ROMAN AND OSCAR WRAPPERS

Owned by Oscar Azizi and Roman Bani-Sadr, Wrappers has been a Swinton Square favourite for more than a decade. To find out more we sat down for a chat with Oscar and a very nice cappuccino. How did you meet Roman? We met in Manchester about 14 years ago. He was working in an Italian restaurant and I was working in a pizza shop, so we both had a background in catering. Eventually we decided to open a business together and started looking for a site. Wrappers had only been open a few months but it was struggling and we knew we could improve it, so we bought it. It’s a strange-shaped building... If it had been me I wouldn’t have built it like this. Before then it was only a shed, you can see the metal bars still here. There is no cellar and not a lot of space to store things so we have to do our shopping every few days. Did you make a lot of changes? Not straight away. We kept the same things but provided a better service and we were very friendly. A lot of our customers are now friends to us. How much has the menu changed? We’ve not changed it a lot but we’ve added things as we have gone along. For example we bought in panini machines and the griddle. What are your best sellers? All our customers love our coffee. I

4

pay a lot for it, I buy the best coffee and everyone likes it. You open at 8am, do you do a good breakfast trade? Oh yes. A lot of people come in then just to drink the coffee! You obviously have a lot of regular customers... Yes. For many of them it’s a meeting place. I think a lot of people outside Swinton know where we are, too. A couple of our customers have been coming in since the day we opened. Unfortunately I’ve seen many pass away but I’ve also seen children grow up into businessmen. And you also own Prego, a pizza take-away... Yes. The current Prego is the second one we opened. The first was in Bolton but we sold that. But you don’t sell pizzas in here... No, we don’t have the equipment for it. You would need a special oven and we don’t have a very big kitchen. Any plans for the future? Well, there is a big space at the back of the cafe that I would like to do something with. We’ll see. Anything you would like to add? Yes, I would like to thank all our customers. Without them our business couldn’t grow. The fact that they come here and they are friends with us, that means a lot.
