WELCOME A WORD FROM THE CENTRE MANAGER - DAVE SIMISTER Welcome to issue 6 of Your Square, where we welcome new tenants to the Square; The Salvation Army will be opening on August 10th, we also had a party in July for Headway who celebrated their First Birthday in the Square. This month also sees our shop focus on Hair Razors Salon who have been with us for 21 years and have had a makeover themselves to celebrate, more later in the issue.
As events go it seems that the recent hot weather has certainly got us thinking about Summer and once again welcoming BBC’s Mr Bloom back for our Garden In The Square event. The friendly gardener is very popular with both kids and mums and will be bringing his ‘veggies’ back for another outing on Saturday August 13th, along with our new radio partners Key 103 for their roadshow.
In May we had another popular ‘Get Active’ day, a family packed, fun filled event with activities for the whole family including the climbing wall, bungee tramps and the new Neo Wall, a great highlight this year was the ‘Zippy Zappy pot painting workshop’ that we have asked back in August.
More about that and other great events later in the issue, in the meantime I look forward to seeing everyone down here in Swinton Square, don’t forget to bring along the vouchers in the back of this issue for all the great savings!

SWINTON HERITAGE LANDMARKS AROUND THE SQUARE
A
brilliant tribute to all the miners of the Swinton area has been unveiled outside the Civic Centre, right across the road from Swinton Square. Carved from solid oak, the memorial features a miner sat on a bench and a plaque which reads This memorial was commissioned by the friends of Agecroft Colliery and is dedicated to all the men, women and children who toiled underground in the coal mines of the Swinton and Pendlebury area... Sit friend and as you rest think of all those who died in the mines of the Irwell Valley”

f you keep your eyes peeled while walking around Swinton you may come across one of eleven new plaques that form the Swinton Town Centre Heritage Trail. The small plaques are set in the pavement to mark significant sites in the town’s history. The closest to Swinton Square celebrates the Unitarian Church and can be found on Swinton Hall Road, behind the ASDA car park. Further down the road is another to mark the site of Swinton Hall itself. Elsewhere there are plaques for the Chorley Road and Station Road rugby grounds, the Public Gardens, Swinton Industrial School and St. Augustine’s Church.

LET’S GET ACTIVE A GREAT WORKOUT The weather Gods smiled on us as we got Swinton Active with a variety of calorie-burning activities that brought out a healthy number of people. Absolutely all the activities were free, from the giant slide to the bungee trampolines, the climbing wall to the Neo wall (best described as a hi-tech whacka-mole that involves a lot of running about!) There were also some less-energetic activities like face painting and pot painting in the old ShoeZone unit. It was also great to see the lads from the Snooker Academy coming above ground to demonstrate their skills and promote the academy to a wider audience. To see what other events we’ve got coming up, have a look at page 5.

KAREN VERNON HAIR RAZORS
Having been present in Swinton Square for 21 years, Hair Razors is one of our longest established and most successful independent businesses. Owners Karen and Raymond Vernon opened their first salon in Salford more than 25 years ago, moving it to new premises in 1998. Swinton Square was their second salon, with a third opening in Monton. As well as celebrating its 21st birthday, the Swinton Square outlet has also recently enjoyed an extensive refurbishment that has completely changed the look of the room. We spoke to Karen about the new look... How would you describe the finished look? We’ve gone for a more modern, minimalist look compared to the last refurbishment. We used PBH Shopfitters from Eccles who also do a lot of restaurants.

It looks great, you’ve clearly not skimped on the details... We spent about £15,000 on it. The customers love it and of course we invested in equipment too - like the new back washes. How many staff do you have working here? There are nine in total, although you won’t see them all here at the same time! They have a variety of skill sets which ensures we can offer a variety of services, using the best quality products to the highest possible standards. What are your most popular treatments? Probably colours. It’s a very seasonal thing, so everyone wants to go lighter when the sun’s out and when it gets to Autumn people want to have a bit
of brown, red and copper. Of course we also offer a full range of beauty services such spray tans, nails, eyebrows, facials, shellac and so on... You also offer men’s barbering, is that a popular service? Oh, yes, the younger men all want a nice style these days. At this point Karen calls in beautician Emma who tells us about a particularly popular new treatment: The L’Oreal Pro Fiber professional range is a treatment for damaged hair. There is the Revive treatment for slightly damaged hair, Restore for medium damaged hair and Recover for very damaged thick to coarse hair. We’ve been offering this treatment for about six weeks and it’s available as an at-home as well as in-salon service.
