The TAYO Story The TAYO Awardees during the 13th TAYO National Awarding at the Malacanang Palace last January 21, 2O16.
Our story began 5,OOO days ago. In the beginning, our goal was simple: to recognize youth organizations that have been instrumental in nation-building. We had seen how People Power demonstrations successfully overthrow governments in the hopes of having a better nation. We had seen the impact that peer groups, barkadas, and other student organizations had on young Pinoys; and seeing that there were many recognitions for individuals (i.e. TOYM, TOSP) but none for youth organizations, the idea of initiating a recognition program for excellent youth groups came to light.
that create their own spark so that others may also bask in the same light. With the TAYO program, we can prove that Filipino youth groups can change lives and turn the world around, because where others see only problems and despair, they see a call for action. What started out as a program to recognize and reward exemplary youth groups has spun off into an independent foundation in the year 2OO4. The TAYO Awards Foundation, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit organization which aims to promote the convergence of stakeholders and policies for effective national and local governance. The Foundation facilitates dialogues and discussions among key government and private sector leaders on current issues and concerns of the youth.
We wanted to prove that the spirit of People Power is not foreign to our younger generation and that when demonstrated day-by-day by groups of young Filipinos, can take on greater challenges so that our country—once paralyzed and in despair—will soon find its greatness. In the past 13 years, we have seen how youth organizations revolutionized our society through social innovations. The works of TAYO-affiliated youth groups have shed greater light on the needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and children with special needs. They have mobilized communities and resources against disaster and hunger, for the environment and education; and they have maximized their available, innate skills and talents to find sustainable solutions without the traditional, “it can’t be done” attitude.
On our fourteenth year, we envision the Search to be the point of convergence and collaboration among all youth organizations in the country. We would like to make the Search the source of newest innovative and creative ideas from the youth sector. We will introduce new methods of looking for the best organizations in the country by incorporating innovation and sustainability in the process. The Search will not only about competing with different organizations in the country but will rather highlight the opportunity for youth organizations to drastically improve their projects and the chance to collaborate with other organizations for new ventures.
The Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations is all about finding, recognizing, and rewarding youth organizations

SENATOR PAOLO BENIGNO “BAM” A. AQUINO IV
Magandang umaga po, mga kaibigan, mga kababayan! To all the judges, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to listen and guide our finalists. To the mentors who shared their insightful experiences, maraming maraming salamat! Sa mga partners and sponsors po ng TAYO 13 Awards, maraming salamat! San Miguel Corporation, Aboitiz Equity Ventures, SMART, Lenovo Philippines – our official I.T. partner, Cebu Pacific – our official airline partner, Greenwich Philippines and Jollibee Group Foundation… Thank you for betting on the Filipino youth and supporting their initiatives to make a difference in our country. To the multimedia arts students of the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde, napakaganda po ng mga videos! Thank you for helping us tell these inspiring stories. Palakpakan po natin sila! To the team who put it all together, to the TAYO Foundation, to the Coca-Cola Foundation, members of the National Youth Commission, and members of my team in the Senate, congratulations on another successful TAYO Awards – the 13th! Thank you for all your hard work and sleepless nights! And, finally… a heartfelt “thank you” to our beautiful, handsome, and, hopefully, not too nervous TAYO 13 finalists – the reason we are all here today. Our dear finalists, welcome to Malacañan Palace, the setting of the final leg of your TAYO 13 journey… so take it all in. This is it! This year’s TAYO Awards is held at a very important time in our country’s history. This year, we will choose our leaders. Once again, we have the opportunity to place our vote on Filipinos we believe will lift the country to greater heights, not just for ourselves, not just for a chosen few, but for each and every Filipino – especially those that are living in poverty and isolation. With reforms creeping into the different branches of government and progress within the reach of more and more Filipinos, this year’s referendum will determine whether we continue forging forward, retreat back, or hold the fort for the next 6 years. And for the pivotal 2016 elections, we find that the vote of the Filipino youth is critical.Sadly, many have low expectations of young Filipinos, believing that they would be easily swayed by propaganda, entertaining memes, and catchy jingles. There are many who are doubtful of our young men and women, thinking that a constant barrage of advertisements and the popularity of a candidate’s endorsers are all it takes to win their favor. There are many who question the ability of the Filipino youth to make earnest and wise decisions during these conspicuous times.
6
A lot has been said about the youth. Does this define the Filipino youth? Let us not forget… It was our young Filipinos that decided to rebel against foreign conquerors using, not only the art of war, but also the sway of a mighty pen to pierce hearts and win our freedom. It was the Filipino Youth who decided to renounce fear and raise fists full of yellow daisies to an intimidating military, overthrowing a cruel dictator and mobilizing the most graceful revolution the world has ever seen. When there is a destructive typhoon, catastrophic earthquake, or devastating flood, it is our young men and women that choose to band together to serve those in the trenches through rescue missions and relief efforts. Time and time again, in our country’s history, young Filipinos choose wisely, choose selflessly, and choose with the Philippines at heart. And today, I am addressing young men and women that have chosen to create change and have decided to make history by shaping the future. Faced with our TAYO 13 finalists, how can one say that the Filipino youth cannot choose wisely, cannot choose selflessly, cannot choose for the country? You, all of you, are the reason I can say to all these detractors, all the naysayers, and all those that are cynical about the Filipino youth… I can proudly say to them that young men and women from across the Philippines can make, will make, and are making better decisions for our country, for our future. Today, I am honored to stand before the exemplars of Filipino youth. Today, I am humbled to stand before young men and women that show the country, and the world, what Filipinos are made of and what every young Filipino can become. Today, we celebrate the true spirit of the Filipino youth that is alive within each and every one of us – a bright spirit that lives deep within every Filipino, young and old. Muli, maraming, maraming salamat sa inspirasyon! Mabuhay ang kabataang Pilipino!
The TAYO Story The TAYO Awardees during the 13th TAYO National Awarding at the Malacanang Palace last January 21, 2O16.
MARIA CECILIA L. ALCANTARA Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines President
His Excellency, President Benigno Simeon Aquino, III; Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino, IV; Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) Awards Foundation President, Ms. Jessica Robredo; National Youth Commission Chairman, Gio Tingson; TAYO 13 finalists, distinguished guests, good morning.
The TAYO awardees inspire us to continue doing our bit for nation building through our programs on water stewardship, education and youth development, especially as we celebrate Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines’ 30th anniversary this year! Dear finalists, you make me proud and give me hope. Despite the many challenges we continue to face as a nation, it is reassuring to know that the next generation has a crop of determined, service-oriented leaders who are willing to put the interest of others before themselves, who see the need in their communities and actually do something about it, who can work together in harmony toward the same goal. Thank you, dear finalists, for keeping that flame of hope alive.
Coca-Cola Foundation envisions “people from all walks of life, from the public and private sectors, working together to make a meaningful difference, building a better Philippines for this generation and generations to come”. We believe that the youth play a critical role in building the nation. They are idealistic, creative, and are full of energy. We believe that it is important to harness these qualities of the youth and direct them to positive action. We believe that it is important to provide the youth with role models that will inspire them to be more, and to do more – not just for their generation but for the ones that will follow them. We have found, in TAYO, an excellent partner in journeying toward our vision.
When you grow up and move into the real world, never stop dreaming. The road will not be easy, many challenges will come your way, many temptations to take short cuts or make an easy buck. I pray that you may not be led into temptation. Keep the faith and continue to be the changemakers that you are – wherever you may be and whatever you may become – parents, government officials, professionals, entrepreneurs. Do not forget that every action you take, every decision you make, will affect at least one other person. So let that action be a positive one.
It has been ten years since we came on board as co-presenter of TAYO, and each edition has been a refreshing and inspiring experience. We have been privileged to meet young people filled with passion for their causes, young people from towns I had never heard of, youth from different social classes, speaking different dialects – but driven by one same desire – to be agents of change. These young individuals have selflessly devoted their time, treasure and talent for the sake of those in need. They are Filipinos who have chosen to lead in seeking solutions to emerging social issues rather than wait for better days to come to their communities.
Congratulations and may God bless you always.

GREGORIO RAMON A TINGSON National Youth Commision Chairperson
The National Youth Commission would like to recognize the genuine efforts of our young people to be the change that they want to see in the country today. Through the TAYO 13 search, we have been made aware of more than 200 projects undertaken by youth organizations in various parts of the country last year. TAYO has taken a shift in its selection process for 2015, concentrating on projects that have responded to clearly indentiďŹ ed problems in their community through focused and relevant solutions. While this has not been an easy process, we are immensely encouraged by the diversity and creativity of projects that we have seen. We have recognized youth efforts in education, environment, culture and the arts, health, livelihood- simpole efforts that will be easy to replicate in other areas with similar problems Ultimately, it is the community that wins. Many of the TAYO Award-winning organizations did not come up with their ideas for the sole purpose of joining the TAYO search, but for the sheer desire to be of service to their community. By doing so, they are nurturing a future generation of youth leaders who will have the same drive to help other people and enable the community to live a better life. Again, we thank our ďŹ nalists for their excellent efforts in nation-building and youth development. We hope that you will continue to partner with us as we strive for a better future for our country.

Move This World, Inc. MTW, Inc.
Continuing Stories of Change A look back on the TAYO 12 Awardees
Move This World, Inc. is grateful to be featured as one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organization in 2O15. Move This World equips educators and students with tools to address their social and emotional wellbeing in order to create a healthy school climate where effective teaching and learning can occur. With the grant and award from TAYO, the organization’s growth was exponential in both programs and linkages. In terms of programs, we recently launched our new online hub which digitally helps our partner teachers all over the world to have 24/7 access for training and support. As to linkages, partnerships grew outside Mindanao. We got new partners from Palawan and Cebu. Institutional partnerships with the National Youth Commission, US Embassy-Manila, Department of Education, and various media companies were also reinforced. Two months after TAYO awards in 2O15, there was 225% increase in the number of attendees in MTW’s 3rd International Conference in comparison to the previous conferences. Focused on integrating peace education to core subjects, participants are educators from all over the Philippines and internationally from the United States, Nepal, and Australia. Due to higher demands of our programs, MTW organized in August 2O15 the 4th International Conference held in Tagbilaran City with Founder & CEO Sara Potler-LaHayne as the keynote speaker. There was also 5O% increase in partners in the bi-annual conduct of shoes and school supplies campaign in Sta. Ana, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. With partners’ support and inspiration, Move This World conducted its 1st Short Course on Social Emotional Learning in Cagayan de Oro City, with attendees from the Teach for the Philippines last November 2O15. Another upcoming event of MTW is the 5th International Conference on Building Safer Spaces: A Training-Workshop on Bullying Prevention towards Social Emotional Learning April 2O-22, 2O16 in Skylight Hotel, Rizal Avenue, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. We thank TAYO Awards Foundation for recognizing our efforts on the ground and for affirming our belief that we are on the right track. Mabuhay!

At the end of the whole training program which ended on March 2O15, they had a graduation ceremony wherein the project beneficiaries who are now empowered had a celebration. The Guest of Honor was no less than the former Chairman of the National Youth Commission, USEC Leon Flores. USEC Flores gave a very inspiring speech to the newly graduates and new members of RAPID. FSSUPT Aderson Comar, the Deputy Regional Director for BFP Region 3 graced the event as weel. Sir Comar who also happens to be the Senior Adviser of RAPID. Different elected officials graced the event, including City Councilors. The son of the governor of Bulacan also graced the event.

From a Youth Organization it has evolved to a multi sector organization which caters to all walks of life including OSY, Senior Citizens, Persons with Disability, and LGBT Sectors.

EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY Access to education, or the lack of it, is one of the biggest obstacles to building a productive citizenry and the development of communities. To be illiterate and unschooled is to be excluded from the possibility of a better future. If we want a better country, we need to provide everyone with the proper knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to help themselves – and eventually help others too. The Education & Technology category seeks to recognize youth organizations who have projects that have addressed the education gaps through technology, literacy programs, science and mathematics trainings, tutoring sessions, alternative learning modules and other creative means in helping build a learned people. Tobog Youth Organization exhausted all of their means to refurbish a day care center in their barangay with the aim of providing a conducive learning environment for young children to learn and dream. University of the Philippines Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students (UP ALCHEMES) and University of the Philippines Chemical Engineering Society (UP KEM) promote science and technology as means to solve societal problems. UP ALCHEMES organizes the only student-led Research Fair that aims to harness the potential of young minds and encourage the proliferation of scientific innovations in production and application that ultimately, can contribute to nation building while UP KEM ignites the appreciation of high school students to the fundamental disciplines of science and technology through summer camps, entrance review sessions, and career caravans. University of San Carlos Chemical Engineering Society’s (USC-ChES) project inspires pupils from five remote public elementary schools in Cebu to read books. They try to achieve this by installing libraries, conducting educational activities and providing different reading materials which are not accessible to the kids. These passionate youth groups continue to bridge the gap in education by different means. They continue to provide avenues for every Filipino child to learn, to dream, and eventually to earn a living for their families.

A conducive classroom is an appendage to the process of learning, especially if it commences the child’s first formal education.
the eyes and mind of a growing child, enough to excite him into attending school.
The small group from Albay who rehabilitated their entire community daycare had a simple goal in mind: A child learning better with a stable seat and a flat and clean table in a pleasant, breathable room with a book in hand. Creating zeal and interest in the learning space can also motivate a child to attend class and it allows him better enhance skills and talents and maintain happy memories of his first years of school.
The TDCC’s incoming enrollees are the real beneficiaries. Not only will they enjoy the completed classroom make-over -- they will also receive the school supplies and additional fixtures acquired by the TYO through fund raising programs and sponsors, namely from AKHRO Tobog Chapter, Amu Kadi Oasnun and The National Bookstore. The decorations for the classroom are made from recycled materials because, upholding TYO’s many values, environmental responsibility. Like the calamansi farmer they helped, residents find those values evident in TYO’s active involvement in making their community a better place since they offer services to generate funds, only to give the help back to the residents.
Before the Tobog Youth Organization (TYO) decided to remodel and refurbish the Tobog Daycare Center (TDCC), much of the fixtures were too old and accident-prone, as was the deteriorated interior covered in molds and crayon marks. Roofs were leaking, ceilings were torn off, there wasn’t a bookshelf serving as a mini library; there were no colorful murals in vibrant hues on the walls and they had limited instructional materials like storybooks, a play place, and an educational T.V. set. Now, the once-dilapidated place is a safer, fully equipped learning facility which is more appealing to both

University of the Philippines Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students UP ALCHEMES Research Fair Diliman, Quezon City The Philippines has an ultimate venue for recognizing the excellence, creativity and ingenuity of its future scientists, thanks to the University of the Philippines Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students (UP ALCHEMES) -a scholastic community focused on promoting academic excellence and its command in holistic development.
Before its expansion in 2O1O, Research Fair started as a one-day event where only highschool students in the Metro could present their outputs. Now, it has become a nationwide platform for youngsters to jumpstart their research careers. It was envisioned to be a venue for the healthy exchange, execution and exposition of smart ideas that would benefit society. It has swept over thirteen regions, pulling in around 2,OOO students to face the challenge of building a strong scientific foundation in the Philippines.
They turn their attention to harnessing the potential of young minds that can gear the nation forward -- something that can be done through the annual Research Fair. The entirety of the project is conducted to bring in scientific researches of highschool students into the spotlight of three events: the Research Competition which is the search for country’s finest Applied Science, Life Science and Physical Science projects; the National Science Conquest which is a series of quizzical competitions both to recognize academic excellence and promote camaraderie in highschool students in their penultimate years; and, to top it all off, a Youth Science Convention enlightens the participants with seminar-workshops on their tertiary education and career opportunities.
“In order to pursue a career in research, science or technology, you have to be inspired,” UP ALCHEMES president Ian Paolo Pe Benito says. He invites all the highschools of the country, especially those in the rural areas, to take part in the conference. “Research Fair is here to help you envision a life of research and development that is geared towards nation-building.”

University of the Philippines Chemical Engineering Society, Inc. UP KEM Project C++: ChEck Marks the Spot Diliman, Quezon City The University of the Philippines Chemical Engineering Society (UP KEM), Incorporated went the extra mile in inspiring highschool students to appreciate chemical engineering as a potential course and profession. They devised a three-part process to skyrocket highschool students to excellence called Project C++: ChEck Marks the Spot. As chemical engineering students, UP KEM believes that the youth of the Philippines could become catalysts of change with the capacity to advance the country to great heights in the field of science and engineering. Since UP KEM has always been an advocate of free and accessible education for the youth, they introduced chemical engineering to Grade 9 students for the first time this year, in adherence to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) approach of the K-12 program with a roving caravan called the ChEcklist. However, The C++: ChEck Marks the Spot is also the rebranding of activities they have been carrying out for many years, consolidating a bigger project that reaches a wider audience. A big part of it is the college admission review series (KEM CAReS). It catered to more than 5OO hisgschool seniors who participated in the lectures and tutorials on topics usually included in college entrance exams. With its 156 members, UP KEM has an abundance of teaching personnel for the hands-on exam preparation and it also has sub-committees who provided handouts, modules and a mock exams, including a mock University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT). Members also imparted knowledge in physics and chemistry in the form of ChEmaraderie, a four-day summer camp that equips the students with the necessary laboratory skills to practice what they learn.

“A mother of a student whose child wanted to study chemical engineering approached me and asked if we were doing this as a part-time job,” says UP KEM president Paul Jake Nalzaro, sharing an important memory when they were teaching in Cebu. He gladly answered no, explaining that UP had a calendar shift and they wanted to utilize their extra time for something useful. In a span of six months, they have reached seven schools, helping more than 8OO students nationwide. Since its founding in 1954, UP KEM has been cultivating opportunities for the youth by conducting various programs, projects and activities such as the Project C++.

“All the books have been moved to one place and now I have to climb a mountain to reach them...I borrowed a book that I needed and made my way back. For just a single book, I had to climb a mountain but I was sure that the book was waiting for me. What if I had climbed the mountain for nothing? What if there was no book and no library that awaited my arrival?” Those were the musings of a member of the University of San Carlos Chemical Engineering Society (US ChES) that sparked the idea of installing mini libraries in the schools lying far in the remote areas of Cebu. Some say reading is the rock of learning. Unfortunately, it is a luxury not everyone can enjoy, especially if the books are hard to access.

Project LIBRO does not only provide reading material for the adopted beneficiary schools, but it also nurtures that love for books by tracking their reading comprehension and conducting reading activities open to all students. It takes at least two years to carry out five of its stages with phase zero being the assessment and selection of the school beneficiary.
Marianne Abuan, the former community extension head, counted their total travel distance for their visits of 984 kilometers as nothing. “When you arrive at the gates and the students are waiting there, excited to help with the books you brought, you can really see their eagerness.”

HEALTH, NUTRITION, AND WELL-BEING A healthy citizenry is key to a productive and effective nation. As we progress today, the challenge is to further provide health care & nutrition, food security, sanitation and other initiatives where Filipinos can have quality, sustainable and meaningful lives. The Health, Nutrition & Well-Being category seeks to recognize youth organizations with projects that address the well-being of communities through medical services, feeding programs, nutrition information campaigns, and innovative food security projects, among other efforts that build self-sustaining communities. Oriental Mindoro’s Keep Hope Alive proves that the youth of today do care by addressing the needs of community members in different far flung Mangyan communities. Their project “Fight4Five” focuses on five thematic areas: healthy teeth and body, access to quality education, environmental awareness, youth and community empowerment, and cultural preservation. Likewise, Rebirth Outdoors Trekkers and Adventurers (ROTA) – Philippines, Incorporated of Cagayan de Oro City helps sick children who needs medical treatment either through surgery or medication by raising funds through trekking activities. Their project brings together outdoor enthusiasts, promotes well-being, and provides avenue for young people to help. Youth Working for Change, an organization whose members came from conflictaffected areas in the various municipalities in Basilan, continues to advocate for a healthier Philippines by providing a decent water system which gave access to potable water in various communities in their province. In the same way, Youth Sports Advocacy Philippines inspires kids to have a healthy lifestyle by providing free training sessions in volleyball, basketball, football, badminton, flag football, net ball, table tennis, wrestling, touch rugby, track and field, lawn tennis, and fencing to children ages 4-17 years old. Its mission is to change the society through sports. These projects are validation that for us to build a healthier Philippines, no one should be left behind. These Filipino youth groups have once again proven that their generation embodies the spirit of volunteerism and bayanihan.
Keep Hope Alive KHA Fight4Five Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro The FIGHT4FIVE program of the Keep Hope Alive youth volunteers aims to alleviate poverty among the indigenous Mangyan communities of Mindoro with a five-pronged approach: 1) Health, teeth and body; 2) Access to quality education; 3) Environmental awareness; 4) Youth and community empowerment; and 5) Cultural preservation. The program is a mobile outreach that has been delivering all-around assistance to uplift the standards of living in forty communities and schools (a total of around 18,5OO beneficiaries) since its inception in the form of medical services, educational drives, feeding programs, tree-planting services and various activities to enrich their cultural heritage. The Mangyan people comprise about 35% indigenous people in Mindoro who reside in far-fetched, isolated, rural areas that are not only geographically challenged, but are also conflict-affected and scarce in resources needed for sustainable living. Keep Hope Alive volunteers turn their attention to impoverished children and their families in the area. Getting there alone is among the major challenges the 240 active volunteers of the organizations faced. Motor vehicle transportation is impossible. They spend four to nine hours walking to the locations, crossing rivers and trekking several mountains along the way just to reach the Mangyan people.
A station awaits the children where they can take their morning baths hand washing. Here, the kids get a chance at intensive hygienic improvement where their hair and nails are trimmed. They then proceed to the feeding area where the volunteers provide them with nutritious meals. The children, groomed and fed, proceed to their assigned foster parents to participate in lessons and, afterwards, singing and dancing activities. Keep Hope Alive sponsors educate and encourage children to be achievers. Keep Hope Alive also makes sure to supply them and their teachers with a helpful set of school supplies with the help of generous donors and sponsors. The FIGHT4FIVE has promoted economic sustainability and environmental awareness since its start in 2O12, healing the community’s surroundings as much as they could with reforestation activities and providing helpful information regarding the use of their resources and organic alternatives.

orphanage in San Juan for an outreach and found the experience to be too short. “We came up with this idea that we would form an organization focusing on the welfare of children,” tells chairman and co-founder Shernan Gamol, specifying the volunteer group’s goal of establishing three more centers.
Another important aspect Keep Hope Alive hopes to establish is the importance of nurturing cultural heritage. After showing the residents a cultural presentation, they engage them into focus-group talks on how to sustain and develop their rich culture. The volunteers assessed the target schools and communities to identify their needs and eventually came up with the five-themed strategy supported by different foreign, government and non-government organizations.
Keep Hope Alive has a total of 65O members, most based in Mindoro. Others who weren’t involved in the actual outreach projects support the organization via online support, planning and fund-raising. After winning the TAYO 13, they plan to expand to Romblon and Palawan.

Youth Sports Advocacy Philippine’s, Incorporated YSA Project YSA Quezon City Nothing brings a community together in a friendlier, healthier and more competitive way other than sports. Youth Sports Advocacy (YSA) Philippine’s, Incorporated envisions a world filled with individuals who live day-to-day by the many positive values developed in an athlete like discipline, teamwork, and camaraderie. Aside from being a fun activity for kids, studies have shown that the more children play sports, the greater attachment they have with their community. Project YSA started when founder Tony Faye Tan, 26, decided to teach volleyball to three kids she found playing outside her house. “All of us are capable of making a change,” Tan says. “I never thought our organization would grow this large.” Growing up as an athlete, she attests to not only the positive physical effects of sports in an individual, but also in his social well-being. The visionary, photographer, aspiring lawyer and volleyball player believes in the ability of sports to a better society and to give children a better idea of playing, diverting their attention away from the negative effects of technology, especially computer games.

However, it was through the propagating power of social media that news of the volunteer sports program accelerated far and wide, bringing in more trainers and trainees to Tan’s neighborhood in Tandang Sora, Quezon City where they hold the sessions every weekend. Three turned into twenty, and the number of kids who wanted to learn more about sports kept growing, as did the number of volunteers who wanted to teach them. Today, YSA has around 149 (athlete and non-athlete) sporting advocates to share the mission of making a change in Philippine society by sharing their skills and knowledge about sports to the youth. Around 8O children (aging 4-12 years-old) are interacting with each other and learn sports they all love and sports they want to know more about like volleyball, basketball, football, badminton, flag football, table tennis, wrestling, touch rugby, track and field, lawn tennis and fencing.

In fact, Philippine Netball team joined the organization in introducing net ball to the kids. The Philippine Flag Football League also had a few training sessions with the children. There are a total of seven organizations volunteering lending a helping hand for the cause, including the UP Volleyball Alumni, World Citi College Men’s Volleyball Team, Heroes Volleyball Program, Titan Eight Network Group Tech. Corp., and San Beda College of Law Athletics Organization.
“All of us are capable of making a change,”
The progress of the children participating will be evaluated and monitored to track and ensure improvement of their performance and as well as their character formation.
Several coaches and student athletes also joined the cause, but the YSA is open to any individual who are fueled by the love of sports and the vision of imparting their knowledge to children who don't have the means to enroll in a specific sports clinic and introduce them to new activities that may catch their interest.
The YSA will continue as long as there are children who are willing to learn and advocates willing to share their knowledge in sports.

Youth Working for Change YWC 2BIG (Project B.O.H.E: Building Opportunities through Health and Environment) Lamitan City, Basilan Some of the less fortunate coastal residents of Basilan can now save a trip from the pampang to the nearest waterfall for a drink of water. Access to clean, potable water was made available to them by the efforts of Youth Working For Change -- a group from ARMM who are dedicated to bettering the quality of life in communities deprived of the services from the government and other stakeholders. 2BIG Project B.O.H.E. (Building Opportunity through Health and Development) is now an installed water system that supplies almost 9O households in two Municipalities of the Basilan province, namely, in the barangays of Limbo-Upas, Tipo-Tipo and Atong-Atong, Lantawan. “Bohe” is a local Yakan term for water, which is one of life’s most basic necessities. However, it has been scarce for the residents of Lamitan who couldn’t afford to take regular baths and buy clean supply of water. The less-fortunate are forced to get water from rivers and carry it home, risking their entire families to bacteria, especially the children. Now, the new source of water enables the students to come to school earlier.

The shortage also called for the help of the local government.
Youth Working For A Change, as a group comprised of youth coming from conflict-affected areas who had their share of experiences with armed conflicts and wars, each member dreams of changing lives of the youth in Basilan.
“Our community went through a war that took its toll on our water supply,” says organization president Nasiba Salip. “We came across the opportunity to do something about it. Now we asked the residents to take care of what we built for them.
The organization believes that it is their job to inspire more youth and heighten their capacity to improve the lives of their fellow townspeople in any way, especially if it involves providing programs such as a decent water system.
Local government officials were briefed by the youth volunteers about the nature and cause of the project and later gave it their blessing, taking it as their responsibility to maintain as Youth Working For Change looks forward to provide the same help to more areas in need.

Rebirth Outdoor Trekkers and Adventurers - Philippines, Incorporated ROTA Trek and Treat Cagayan De Oro City In 2O11 alone, Northern Mindanao had the fifth highest mortality rate of 4O (per 1OOO live births) in the Philippines and children are society’s most vulnerable. At least one in three Filipino children below 18 years old is living in poverty, which does not only encompass financial deprivation, but also that of health as well. Aside from raising money for earth-quake stricken Bohol in 2O13, the Rebirth Outdoor Trekkers and Adventurers (ROTA) from Cagayan de Oro use their unique way of fund-raising to save the lives of children who need help in paying their medical bills for their surgeries. Trek and Treat is a program of theirs, where the group of mountaineers and volunteers organize trekking activities for those who may want to help with the cause, or simply have trekking as a part of their mountaineering lifestyle. “It comes naturally from outdoor enthusiasts to love mother nature,” shares ROTA member Emily Rafols. “So it’s not difficult for us to love another person’s life all the more.” ROTA underwent a transformation from carrying out nature-centered programs, shifting their attention to “nurturing” children’s education and health through fund-raising activities like Trek and Treat which raised a total of 75, 58O pesos in cash. The first of the proceeds went to baby Rusver who was given 24,2OO pesos to help with the surgical operation to treat his omphacele in March 2O13. LIVELIHOOD AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Enterprise development plays a vital role in economic progress, may it be via individual start-up ideas or community-cooperative endeavors. Individuals who engage in businesses are catalysts for economic growth, creating opportunities to earn for themselves and for their families, and also providing jobs to their communities. In today’s global and integrated markets, the challenge is to constantly address the ever-growing sophistication of market needs, customer satisfaction and supply chains. The Livelihood & Entrepreneurship category seeks youth groups who push for the knowledge, skills and values of entrepreneurship, establishing sustainable and marketable livelihood programs as interventions in alleviating poverty, especially in the countryside. Other programs may include jobs generation & matching, financial literacy, market linkage, product development, and design & sales initiatives, etc. The projects of Bayugan National Comprehensive High School-Young Entrepreneurship in Schools (BNCHS-YECS), University of the Philippines Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors (UP CIEM), and Philippine Junior Jaycees-Tacloban Sinirangan Chapter envision a more productive Philippines, where Filipinos, especially the underprivileged, have the opportunities to earn a living. Theirs are exemplary efforts that strived for the improvement of the skills and abilities of high school students with regard to enterprising, alleviation of poverty and lack of opportunity by providing means of livelihood such as fishing, distribution of resources to a Yolanda-stricken community, and promotion of new technologies. These youth groups provided hope to members of different communities who seem to have lost the desire to dream. They did not only provide opportunities to earn a living or to profit, they provided the spark to aspire for a better life.

Business venture helped assure safety of almost 2,5OO students. Running for almost 12 years now, Young Entrepreneurs and Cooperative in School (YECS) School Supplies is continuously meeting the demands and needs of the students and faculty by selling school supplies in their school canteen. This entrepreneurial activity attains two objectives at the same time. It helps in improving the business skills of young entrepreneurs and answer the problem of safety of students and teachers alike as they had to brave a busy highway to buy basic school supplies. Junior and senior students of BNCHS thought of this endeavor way back in 2OO4 when they felt that their school is having problems accommodating the demands of its population in terms of selling school supplies. Thus, students were forced to cross highways which was very dangerous. With the help of their teacher, they thought of this business venture which works and benefit them both ways.

Pioneer student-members contributed 50 pesos and were allowed to have 1 minimum share and a maximum of 5 shares. The organization was already able to construct a laboratory center, an extension of their office and conference room and they also bought necessary equipment for the efficient flow of their business. Aside from providing affordable school supplies to students, one of their sales-in-charge was able to graduate last March 2O15. Her salary from YECS were able to sustain her through college. The organization now has 225 members, a balloon from its original number of members which is 15. Today, membership is voluntary however, Business Management students are given priority. The then 15 member group were divided into 3 and were tasked to design their own start up enterprises. They ventured into school supplies selling as it is one of the biggest demand of their school. Sitio Pulo is almost an unknown area to most Filipinos, especially college students. However, for the University of the Philippines Circle of Industrial Engineering, it has become their mission to bring smiles to this place through sustainable projects, donations and alternative classes. The 122-member UP organization partnered with different institutions to make Sitio Pulo, a community of around 145 families and 225 children, a better place. LETS DO IT or “Livelihood and Education, to Touch the hearts of the Residents by immersing our members to their way of living and to deliver Sustainable Development in the Community” was started by the organization officers for academic year 2012-2013. However, brought about by natural calamities, the vision did not materialize. But due to the persistence of Louie Angelo Rivera, then-Vice Chairperson for External Affairs, the team was able to spearhead its first LETS DO IT project the following year. The project is a collaboration of different institutions. In partnership with the Yellow Boat Foundation, they were able to donate 45 boats and fishing nets, increasing the people’s income to almost three thousand pesos from five hundred pesos. The boats were made by the local fishermen, earning additional income from their usual source of livelihood. Aside from the boats given to the different families in Sitio Pulo, the organization also donated educational materials such as bags and school supplies. From just a vision, they were able to partner with major companies such as Biogesic. This partnership helped them in donating blankets and medicines to the people of Sitio Pulo.

The organization plans to help more communities and build more dreams through the LET'S Do It project.
Philippine Junior Jaycees, Inc. Tacloban Sinirangan PJJI, Inc. The RISK Project Tacloban City
Something good came out of Typhoon Yolanda. The RISK Project of the Philippine Junior Jaycees, Inc.’s Project RISK is a four-type activity in Tacloban City, Tolosa and Palo, Leyte. RISK stands for recreate, invest, save and know. The Jaycees spearheaded and implemented projects to help the victims of Yolanda return to their normal lives. Their first project is an environmentally friendly fun run. It consisted of a freedom wall, waste segregation and insight sharing. This fun run aimed to inform the public about pollution and poverty incidence in the country. The insight sharing allowed the beneficiaries to be better involved in the recreation and re-establishment of their lives. The second event was a tree planting activity at Tolosa, Leyte with the help of different schools to ensure sustainability. Tree planting is one of the most common environmental activity to combat flooding and land erosion. This activity served as a measure of precaution for the community, helping them to be more prepared if and when another calamity hits. Tolosa was one of the municipalities in Leyte heavily devastated by typhoon Yolanda. Leyte in general became home to several distraught farmers after the said calamity. They had no means to buy farming resources to start up their own lives. The Jaycees’ were motivated once again to extend help.

Justice delayed is justice denied. Jail congestion has become a perennial problem in the Philippines for a number of reasons: the high crime rate, shortage of funds for additional buildings, and the general lack of sympathy for criminals. There aren’t many people who try to put themselves in the shoes of a detainee counting down the years of his life in a crowded jail cell, rolling around in grief and self-pity, being unaware of his rights and losing hope in his future. Spending everyday behind bars, there’s only so much prisoners could do as they wait for their long-overdue cases to turn up from the pile. Thanks to the efforts of 39 law students from Cebu, the inmates of the most crowded detention facilities could help each other resolve each others’ cases and hasten their release. The members of the School of Law and Community Enrichment (SOLACE) share with the detainees their knowledge of the rights of the accused, criminal procedures and the

justice system through a series of lectures and assessments. The 25 trained Inmate Paralegal Aides then spread their new found knowledge with co-inmates, along with the feeling of hope and the privilege of giving hope to others. The program gives thought to the overstaying detainees who have been behind bars longer than their prescribed period as penalty for their offenses. Most of them did not know their rights and did not know the procedure of the criminal justice system, this includes the elderly, diseased, and children in conflict with the law. This is why the members of SOLACE conduct case follow-ups to empower the accused whose right to speedy trial is violated by the delaying of criminal prosecution for an indefinite amount of time. Paralegal coordinators could be an invaluable aid to supply knowledge of the vexatious, capricious, and oppressive delays of their incarceration.

“Justice delayed, is justice denied.”
The process of jail visits, inmate interviews, case follow-ups and paralegal training seminars was able to expedite the release of one convict from the most over-crowded jail in the country, the Mandaue City Jail with a capacity of 95 inmates and an outstanding population of 1,113. “This is just a start,” says SOLACE president Hope Cesely Baquero, adding that the TAYO award-winning student organization from the University of San Jose-Recoletos School of Law now eyes the Cebu City jail as their next beneficiary.
needed to truly solve the problem of jail congestion. Ms. Baquero implores more people to see jail decongestion as something to be taken seriously. She and her team poured their time and effort into properly assessing overstaying inmates and their cases in the Regional Trial Court branches, organizing providing visual aid for the training sessions, and even translating the provisions of law to Cebuano to better explain inviolable rights they still possess. “Not everyone is interested in contributing to this solution to the problem,” Ms. Baquero says. “But we’re proud that we were able to transform what we learned in school into actions.”
SOLACE, in partnership with the Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation (HLAF) and its collaboration with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penalogy (BJMP), is only a small part of the multi-faceted approach

I am Making a Difference I am MAD I am Making a Difference Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila
I am M.A.D. (Making a difference) is a team of more than 2OO wish granters from all over the country who believe that bringing people along and letting them see the beauty of helping others without expecting anything in return is one of the most effective ways to help them. However, with the rewarding experience the giver acquires in the process, both giver and receiver are beneficiaries. “We choose children because they are the foundation of every nation,” shares co-founder Christian Rivero. “If our youth is responsible, we will have a good nation.” By conducting three-day outreach programs, youth volunteers of I am M.A.D. aim to shape children’s aspirations (grades 4 to 6) into those of passionate Filipino Citizens who have deep love for others, their environment, their country, their families and their God. Different from the many groups devoted to conducting outreach programs, I am M.A.D. upholds a set of ten commitments which are ascribed to their process of empowering kids to be young catalysts of change. I am M.A.D continues to nurture individual’s drive to make a difference at an early age.
1. I will pray and thank God everyday 2. I will smile and greet people around me 3. I will eat nutritious food every meal 4. I will share my food to those who doesn’t have 5. I will throw my garbage in the trashcan 6. I will play with fairness and sportsmanship 7. I will return any lost and found items to the authority 8. I will study my lessons before going to bed 9. I will hug my parents and tell them how much I love them 1O. I will start making a difference within myself today
“Once a child looks at us and smiles, and we see their parents smiling as well, we tell ourselves, we need to continue doing this,” co-founder Mark Ravanzo shares. I am M.A.D. is the union of volunteers all over the Philippines who share a deep concern for society, especially the youth. The volunteers spark hope to improve lives of young participants through experiences and workshops that try to motivate them to achieve their dreams. After I am M.A.D. achieved the milestone of being part of the TAYO 13, Mark looked back on the journey as an opportunity to know more about the other equally-accomplished organizations and learn from them. He sees the TAYO as a good opportunity to benchmark smaller, lesser-known organizations who have their own stories of spreading youth positivity to other areas.

Pinoy Malikhain Pinoy Malikhain Balik Kasiyahan Sa Lansangan Taytay, Rizal
Do you remember how the cheerful yet educational chiming of Batibot sparked the creativity and thoughtfulness in your childhood mind? Pinoy Malikhain uses the power of their God-given talents accompanied by crafty story-telling to bring smiles and educational entertainment to children in need all over the Philippines. Youth volunteers circle the Philippines -- from the mountain communities to the disaster stricken areas of Samar and Leyte -- to do puppet shows, games, food and various arts and crafts activities to nurture the talented minds of kids, teach them to value the environment, and bring them closer to God. Having educational puppet shows give children something to be enjoyed without having to think about the unpleasantries imposed on them in their early years by tragedy, poverty and calamity.

Moreover, Pinoy Malikhain aims to inspire young minds to pursue their dreams through wholesome, environment-friendly ways like outreaches, bible story-telling sessions and “Rubber Arts” wherein the children learn how to recycle and transform trash into something creative.

“Hindi nasusukat kung gaano karangya ang isang grupo makapasilbi lang ng may saya sa puso para sa kapwa, mapagplanuhan ng maayos at magawan ng paraan ang simpleng problema at ilapit ito sa Diyos,” Managing director Mark David Cerezo says, describing their secret in giving joy to children in need.
The group has been paying visits to street children, communities recovering from disasters, orphanages, and daycare centers since 2OO9, sometimes visiting more than 3OO children in each location.
The group of whole-hearted volunteers, who ask nothing in return, are supported by donors who provide funding and school supplies for the children. Before being finalists for the TAYO 13, they have already made a name for themselves by being featured by numerous TV programs for being exemplars of humble, grace-driven advocacy.
Their many travels were long and strenuous but nothing fuels the volunteers of Pinoy Malikhain more than the sight of the children being happy and feeling relieved from their underprivileged state.

Propelling Our Inherited Nation Through Our Youth Inc. POINTY, Inc. Youth Leadership Seminar Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental
Youth leadership training is one thing, but a well-supported, concerted effort to turn well-informed youth into advocates of peace and development is another. Youth leadership training is one thing, but a well-supported, concerted effort to turn well-informed youth into advocates of peace and development is another. A four-day and/or three-day seminar mused by Propelling Our Inherited Nation Through Our Youth (POINTY) Inc. is the avenue for future leaders to polish their technical and interpersonal skills for their roles in nation-building, as well as becoming aware of the AFP peace initiatives in eight provinces of Northern Mindanao. The organization does not believe that the intricacy of what makes a responsible and patriotic citizens is not something that can be invoked all at once. That’s why the Youth Leadership Seminar (YLS) sets itself apart from the norm of shaping future leaders by breaking down the process into three integral parts: The Youth, The Youth and the Government, and The Model Filipino Youth. All youth stakeholders partake in lectures from the local offices of the Red Cross Youth, DSWD, DepEd, ALS, TESDA, DENR, PDEA, and the clergy. The YLS eyes a transformed and empowered group of young individuals who are capable of fulfilling their roles in building a morally and spiritually upright society through this non-intimidating exchange of patriotic and nationalistic lectures, activities and team-building exercises between local government units of Region X and XIII and their 3,672 community members composed of 15 to 3O-year-olds.

Youth Leadership Batches
Of course, fun is incorporated in the process of learning through more “transformative approaches” that simplifies the principles of leadership into a more dynamic training course. During this period, the youth are able to develop a critical understanding of themselves and their greater responsibilities which include recommending and implementing government programs. “They will walk into action right after the seminar,” says POINTY Inc. Assistant Secretary Maria Angelica Tan, further sharing that graduates of the seminar will also “sustain their community by providing support for addressing their issues and concerns.”

It has also been helpful in sharing the 4th Infantry Division’s mission of shielding the youth against deceptive organizations.

ENVIRONMENT, DISASTER RISK REDUCTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION The Philippines’ vulnerability to disasters is due to its geographical location. The country experiences around twenty typhoons a year on average as it lies along the Western Pacific Basin, the world’s busiest typhoon belt. The country is also vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as it lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire. The challenge for the new generation of Filipinos is how to adapt to climate change and be able to build robust and resilient communities. Environmental consciousness and disaster preparedness are tied closely together. When one is in tune with the surroundings, it becomes easier to decide on what to act on: which issues to address, what areas to improve in, what impending catastrophes may happen. Preventive measures are always best, especially in our country where we regularly experience typhoons and other calamities both natural and man-made. The Environment, Disaster Risk Reduction & Climate Change Adaptation category seeks to recognize youth groups who work with vulnerable communities in effective environmental protection, climate change solutions, promoting biodiversity and ecological awareness, and disaster prevention, education, rescue, rehabilitation, among others. Environmental and Climate Change Research Institute (ECCRI) of the De La Salle Araneta University has installed a Solar-Powered Ultrasonic Flood Detector System in three municipalities in Tarlac which serves as a disaster risk management device to detect and forecast threatening flood events so that farmers can be alerted in advance and can undertake appropriate responses to prevent or lessen disaster. With the aim of saving lives and preventing disasters brought about by conflagration, Instrumentation and Control Student' Society (ICSS) of the Technological University of the Philippines-Manila built the Iwas Sunog Gadget (ISUGAD) that can detect change in temperature, humidity, and smoke, and alerts the authorities through a text message. Kanlaon Theater Guild aims to impart awareness on disaster risk reduction and management through series of short, interactive, and mobile plays while Tanay Mountaineers protects the environment, saves the forests, and provides livelihood through their "Community Charcoal Briquetting Project" which uses agricultural wastes as resources. These projects are reminders of how we should not forget the importance of taking care of our environment. The youth groups have also shown that for us to have a bright future, we should start thinking of innovative and creative ways of providing measures to address the consequences of climate change.
Environmental and Climate Research Institute - De La Salle Araneta University ECCRI - DLSAU Impact and Risk Analyses of Long-Term Climate Variability on Food and Environmental Security in Tarlac Province Malabon City, Metro Manila A science-based research advocacy spearheaded by the Environmental and Climate Research Institute (ECCRI) of De La Salle Araneta University helped the municipalities of Paniqui, Pura and Ramos in the province of Tarlac in terms of increasing resiliency and reducing vulnerability brought about by natural and anthropological disasters. This preparedness was a result of the distribution of Ultrasonic flood detector systems developed by the junior scientists. To aid this device, the organization also conducted discussion groups and interviews to validate results of the device. Moreover, primary stakeholders were involved in the implementation which made them more aware of necessary details and appreciate disaster preparedness as an effective tool to combat mortality and food shortage. ECCRI’s project benefited almost 13O, OOO people. It helped the province of Tarlac prepare for the calamities through risk assessment and risk reduction measures. The installation of ultrasonic flood detector systems also helped the agricultural sector prevent loss of profits. It also provided farmers and fishermen the knowledge in adjusting their agricultural calendar.
46
The said adjustment helped farmers and fishermen by the anticipation and preparation for disasters brought by climate change. According to the Pura government website, “the Flood Detector System is already transmitting warning signals on the level of flood water at the lowest identified elevation in Barangay Cadanglaan through text messages to the LDRRMO personnel.” Flooding is a perennial problem not just in the province of Tarlac but also of the whole country. It damages lives, personal properties, business and agriculture. Installation of a warning device such the Solar-powered Ultrasonic Flood Detector System developed and distributed by De La Salle Araneta can significantly reduce damages and help the people in their preparation. Climate change remains to be one of the gravest problems of the world. It affects all parts of human lives – family, industry, employment, agriculture etc. Agricultural devastation for instance affects the food supply of the people. That is why this project, entitled “The Impact and Risk Analyses of Long-Term Climate Variability on Food and Environmental Security in Tarlac Province” proved to be beneficial.

ECCRI coordinated with different institutions such as but not limited to Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, PAGASA and NSCB in the implementation of their project. Aside from the distribution of such device the organization also conducted risk assessment, risk management, participatory action research, cost-benefit analysis, policy analysis, climate modeling and projections, tropical cyclones tracking, mapping using quantum geographic information systems and humanitarian advocacy projects. This 1O-part project are divided into sub-groups and entailed the participation of all key players. The organization was funded by the Oscar M. Lopez Center for Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management Foundation Incorporated (OML Center). They were granted almost 2 million pesos after careful scrutiny of the OML Board. The project was launched in the year 2O13 and ended on 2O15.

Kanlaon Theater Guild Kanlaon Theater Guild Project DANGUP Bacolod City Twenty young thespians from Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod use their talents to spread awareness of the seriousness of calamity and the importance of risk reduction. The Kanlaon Theater Guild has done more than a hundred productions on their interactive mobile theater. Their original interactive productions both educate and entertain their audiences in disaster-stricken and disaster-prone communities about what to do before, during, and after perilous situations. What’s the price of admission? The residents’ willingness to share their knowledge and awareness with other neighboring communities. “The project is about preparation,” says actor and director Charles Tan. “There are a lot of other projects that are being done for the pagbangon or recovery stage of the victims.” After many years of enduring natural and man-made disasters like typhoons, earthquakes and fires, all of which could happen at any time, the guild was tapped by the Save The Children Foundation to spread to the communities and schools of Negros Occidental the awareness of risk reduction and management. Now, every full-fledged member of the acting troupe do their part in Project Dangup, which means “to take refuge, shelter or sanctuary”.
48
Coincidentally in 2O14, a fire razed the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod gymnasium. The Kanlaon troupe had to find an alternative space for productions which, eventually, was the interactive mobile theater. With it, the Guild went on a mission to minimize future casualties by instilling proper risk reduction and management among the minds of the next generation. Children could become catalysts of change. So far, they have graced through the challenge of bringing the grave matter of danger and casualties in the form of short, whimsical comedy plays that instill in the minds of children and adults alike the steps to take in the event of disasters. The characters of the productions “Si Iska Nga Permi Handa” and “Si Tonyo Alisto” paint a clear picture of what kind of person you should be in anticipating and dealing with hazardous situations, steering children away from the tendency of being apathetic towards the risk of disasters. The guild even assured the audience’s understanding in the form of question and answer portion wherein prizes were provided, but all that was just the start.

Phase two would come from the part of the communities. “The play will go on as long as there are groups who invite us,” Mr. Tan finishes, defining their ideal beneficiaries as communities willing to accept the responsibility of training other communities." He is proud to say that there were already two communities committed to undergo training from them pertaining to theater arts and disaster preparedness. The theater guild has participated in many national, regional and provincial film festivals, along with other culture-related events of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It was only on their 25th year (2O15) that they were invited to perform in the Municipalities of Carles and Estancia, Ilo-ilo, for the one-year anniversary for Typhoon Yolanda that heavily

It started as a treat for the children and the emphasis of the demise of unpreparedness during typhoons. The troupe later decided to continue productions in other communities in Negros Occidental and it eventually became Project Dangup. Aside from continuously carrying out the educational productions in their eyed 1O Barangays, Kanlaon Theater Guild plans to tackle climate change, environmental protection and energy conservation as a winner of the TAYO 13.
Tanay Mountaineers, Incorporated TM Inc. Community-based Charcoal Briquetting Project Tanay, Rizal
Producing charcoal has been deemed the “Silent Killer of the Philippine Forest” because its process lays waste to country’s reserve of greenery and its biosphere.
To the uplands of Tanay, Rizal, the production of charcoal is their main source of livelihood. TM made it a point to introduce the residents to the better and proper way of manufacturing coal that doesn’t require cutting any more trees.
As a non-government organization sworn to protect and nurture nature, Tanay Mountaineers(TM), Inc. aims to steer the country away from the destructive practice of traditional charcoal production by bringing a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative into light.
Coal could be made from organic matter like grass and branches found on the ground which is shredded and crushed into powder. After creating the mixture, a briquetting machine compresses it into a cylindrical mold and is dried under the sun.
The members of TM believe that every single person in a community, especially the youth, share the same responsibility of mending the damage done to the environment. This eventually sparked the conception of the Community-based Charcoal Briquetting Project, an effort to set charcoal-making right.
TM doesn’t only promote the finished products - they take it to neighboring municipalities to share the pro-environment advocacy of eco-friendy manufacturing to strengthen the implementation of Environmental Law Enforcement.

Each ton of briquetted coal produced saves up to 88 trees. Avoidance of cutting trees is the avoidance of floods and landslides that endanger the area. Since briquetting machines are worth up to 2OO,OOO pesos, TM provided the free metal drums or carbonizers necessary to “hot-spot” areas like San Andres, Sto. Niño, Mamuyao, Cayabu, Tinucan, Sta. Ines, Laiban, Daraitan, and Cuyambay (Tablon). TM may be remembered for winning the TAYO 11 for their disaster risk-reduction program that empowers the youth to build “Disaster Resilient Communities.” Now, they triumph once more with a program where its volunteers impart to Tanay natives their knowledge of environmental preservation and measures for climate change adaptation.
“Tanay Mountaineers(TM), Inc. aims to steer the country away from the destructive practice of traditional charcoal production by bringing a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative into light.” Since its Engr. Carlos Inofre, Jr. founded the organization with its 19 members last 1997, TM has been recognized as guardians of nature in the Philippines. The 18-year-old organization envisions all of its 244 members to be better leaders and citizens in the future.

“Safety isn’t expensive, it’s priceless!” The Instrumentation and Control Students’ Society developed ISUGAD or Iwas SUnog GADget and facilitated its installation at Malate, Manila with the approval of the Bureau of Fire Protection – Paco Fire Station. ISUGAD is a device that prevents fire by monitoring temperature, humidity of the environment and presence of smoke. Moreover, it also has the capacity to notify barangay officials in case of a fire incident while simultaneously activating the alarm system. It is made up of two units and is a 3-part project. The first part is triggering the device of the system, the second is activating the “brain” or the microcontroller system and lastly, the GMS module that sends a text message to authorities if and when there is abnormality in the data monitoring the temperature, humidity and smoke. Fire escalates very fast and damages properties without mercy and without fast response, it can take lives of people. Thus, prevention will always be the number one step in assuring safety. Malate, Manila is a known fire prone area and the installation of such device is beneficial to the 1,500 people residing in the area.
