the bookstore for art & architecture coleman highland community center council grove public library
The main idea for this bookstore on 39th street in Kansas City is to have many unique and engaging experiences that pull you through the building and help you explore your creativity. Bringing this feeling to a bookstore for artists and architects is a memorable experience that will leave an impression on its visitors and spark creativity for its users.

This project is a community center for the Coleman Highlands neighborhood in Kansas City, that would have the potential to bring the community together. The main idea of this community center is to focus on ways to draw the community into the space. There is 3 main areas in this community all surrounding the site. There is residential, institutional, and commercial. The design includes four facades that will draw people in from those areas. The program is oriented on the facade to face these areas, acting as a billboard for what is going on in the building; the energy of the people inside will catch people’s attention and draw them in. The gym is located in the heart of the community center to draw everyone into to the largest space.

When you walk through a library and in between bookshelves, what captivates you? Most likely it is the spine of every book. The main idea of this library in Council Grove, Kansas is to treat the spaces as spines using them to pull people to the site and towards the knowledge wall. The knowledge wall is set up to help display information from the city, state, and library. The use of the knowledge wall is to educate people using information that will interchange month or weekly. The library can also be utilized as a modern and informative place to display historic sites and share stories that has made the city what it is today.

Murals are hidden gems, and the adventure to find them around the city is an experience that makes these landmarks so special. The brick screen was deigned to allow glimpses of the mural to be seen from Troost, and hold the urban front. The design is to pull people in and act as a reveal to the mural and the two main entries of the building and the plazas.
The Irwin Union Bank is known for it’s high standards, architects like Eero Saarinen, Dan Kiley, and Kevin Roche all had a hand in designing these banks in Columbus, Indiana. To meet these high standards we were asked to create a bank that announces its presence in the community. Kansas City is sometimes called the ‘city of murals’ due to the high number of murals that show the history of the neighborhoods they are in. The Mural I designed for the bank was inspired by the Troost Ave. mural adjacent to the site and contributes to the representation of Kansas City’s rich culture.

The idea of meditation struck me as being important for college student. The idea of the Contemplative Center at UMKC in Kansas City acts as a place on campus to escape from the everyday stresses of studying and classes. I have combined two modes of meditation for students. One as you circulate through the space, called Moving Meditation, and the other in the Art Boxes, which is designed for Sitting Meditation. I was asked to choose art work from the Nelson Atkins Museum that would become permanent homes for the art work. The Art work reflects the meditative action that the spaces inspire. Natural lighting was explored to enhance the meditation of both the individual rooms and circulation spaces. Natural light is a big factor when it comes to the happiness and welfare of students. 1. Santa Monica, California doesn’t have an iconic building like the Arch in St. Louis and the Needle in Seattle. The main idea of this NPR Station is to create an iconic building for Santa Monica by using Gems in the facade as jewelry. The gem idea came from the need for non-perpendicular walls for the acoustic spaces for the station and maintaining the blingy and vibrant energy of the city. The building form came from the surrounding building masses, pulled to become the servant bars to anchor the building. The gems are the fore front of the building and represent the different NPR stations that are played daily.

This lake house in Missouri overlooks beautiful views , and the design concept for the interior spaces reflect them. Each space is either in curated harmony or contrast with the landscape throughout the year. All spaces with no visual connection to the exterior take on the colors of spring/summer to remind you of the view. All spaces pointed towards the view are neutral with pops of navy to play off of the greenery of the view. The spaces with views pointed away from the lake view have fall colors to blend in with the fall season and contrast throughout the other seasons of the year.
