“It’s Good Business t What is Tidewater Builders Association all about? To put it simply, TBA is a trade organization devoted to improving the business environment for companies involved in residential and light commercial building. Yet, there is nothing simple about the many services and advantages TBA can offer you and your company. Educational programs, legislative support, insurance benefits and industry news and information – these are all among the benefits you receive as a member of TBA. Your membership on the local level also buys you membership in the Home Builders Association of Virginia (HBAV) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), each offering its own set of benefits and opportunities. It’s at the local level, however, that you’ll reap the true benefits of membership. Whether you actually build houses or you supply a product or service to those who do, belonging to TBA is an opportunity to lend your strength to an organization that is fueled by the motto “It’s Good Business To Do Business With A Member.” Through your TBA membership you can:
• Receive dollars-in-your pocket discounts from companies like Dominion Dental Services, John Hancock Life Insurance Co., FedEx, GM, Hertz and more;
• Promote legislation favorable to affordable housing on the local, state and national levels;
• Enhance your image to local legislators, prospective home buyers and the community at-large;
• Improve the local quality of life through participation in community service programs; and
• Heighten the success of your business through association activities and programs.

A unified voice; individual assistance TBA can help you build a stronger business in many ways – through education, through networking and, perhaps most importantly, through a unified lobbying effort aimed at preserving affordable housing. At a glance, here’s what TBA does for you each day on the legislative front: H Continuously monitors city council and planning commission agendas in all area cities in order to respond proactively to issues concerning the building industry; H Provides analysis of proposed legislative and regulatory actions to local municipal governments;
H Keeps positive lines of communication open by regular meetings with elected and appointed city officials; and H Works closely with the Home Builders Association of Virginia to ensure that local industry interests are heard at the state level. TBA’s Builder Services Division is just a phone call away when a member needs individual help with a local municipal issue, whether it’s cutting through red tape in a city’s planning department or clarifying a code requirement. Below is an example of the assistance this division provides:
H Actively funds the election of pro-business candidates through its Political Action Committee;
THE MEMBER’S PROBLEM:
THE MEMBER’S RESOLUTION:
A builder purchased five lots in 2001. However, new city zoning in 2006 left him unsure of the value of those lots. He turned to the Builder Services Division to help him determine how to develop those lots in compliance with the new zoning.
The TBA Builder Services staff was able to locate the proper code for the builder’s lots, which actually resulted in the discovery that his original five lots could now accommodate 10 homes. “Without the proper information, I would have ended up with one lot instead of two,” said the builder. (Builder Services) “know what they are talking about and if you get it from them, it’s correct.”
Knowledge is power TBA provides members with a wide range of educational programs, from short workshops about relevant business topics to the six-week Registered in Apartment Management (RAM) School, the first step in professional certification for apartment managers. TBA’s four councils – the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council, Remodelers Council, Green Builders Council and Developers Council – also offer programs throughout the year targeted to each group’s specific interests. And a free quarterly Builder Breakfast Forum, open only to member builders and their superintendents, features speakers addressing topics that are timely to the local audience. An associate member is invited to sponsor each breakfast.
Building strong communities With the generous support of its members, TBA oversees many programs that make South Hampton Roads a better place to live: Building Trades Academy, a dual-purpose program that helps fill members’ need for skilled construction workers, while providing career opportunities for lowincome citizens; TBA Scholarship Foundation, one of the largest private donors in the state, giving academic scholarships and design contest awards annually;
TBA Charity House, built each year at Homearama with the proceeds benefiting a local children’s organization; and Annual Charity Golf Tournament, a social mixer for builders and associates, with a deeper purpose of raising funds to support the Building Trades Academy.
Mixing work with play Your membership in TBA can be as fun as it is fulfilling. Events are planned throughout the year to allow you to mix and mingle with colleagues in a social setting: TBA picnic, a long-time member favorite with more than 3,000 folks turning out for food, fun and games – all sponsored by members; Fall Golf Outing, an annual event that raises money for the TBA Political Action Committee; TMHC Associates’ Showcase, Awards Banquet and RAM School Graduation, one of the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council’s yearly highlights; Membership Mingle, a no-cost networking event making its debut in 2010; Charity Preview Party, the opening celebration of TBA’s annual Homearama event; Builders Ball & Installation of Officers, a blacktie-optional gala that kicks off the new year and a new slate of officers in style.
Member-to-member, member-to-consumer There are countless opportunities to promote your products and services to both fellow members and the buying public: The Cornerstone Foundation, TBA’s premier sponsorship opportunity for companies that want to support the association’s overall goals; Event sponsorships, available at all social activities and many educational programs;
Beyond our area Both HBAV and NAHB offer members benefits that far exceed in value the cost of annual dues. As a HBAV member, you have access to: • Enhancements to your health insurance if you carry Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Such value-added benefits as chiropractic care and supplemental accident coverage are provided at no additional charge.
Homearama, an enclosed-site display of singlefamily homes that is the industry’s annual “Buy A New Home Now!” campaign;
• Discounted long-term care insurance through John Hancock Life Insurance Co.
The Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show, a product and service showcase featuring more than 500 display booths;
• Affordable dental coverage through Dominion Dental.
The Mid-Atlantic Home & Flower Show visitors guide, a must-have program highlighting all the show features; The Tidewater Builder, TBA’s bimonthly magazine, carrying information and advertising directly to the industry’s movers and shakers; The Plan Book, a classy, full-color magazine that serves as the visitors’ guide to Homearama; Nuts & Bolts, TBA’s biweekly e-newsletter; Homearama Exhibit Center, the show-withinthe-show at the annual housing showcase, featuring 80 product and service displays; and The TBA Web site (www.tbaonline.org), where your link or banner display ad can be viewed by thousands of members and consumers alike.
• Verizon Wireless Discount to eligible contractor members. • A Member Rebate Program that’s extremely easy to use and pays quarterly rebates to builders and remodelers who buy products from a consortium of well-known manufacturers. A number of local companies are already using it and the money they’ve received ranges from $400 to $3,000 – per quarter!
Contact Jim Bonnell, LUTCF, director of member benefits, at (800) 734-6344, ext. 305, or jbonnell@hbav.com www.hbav.com

• The Member Advantage program, which offers year-round discounts from a variety of national companies, including FedEx, GM, Hewlett Packard, Paychex, Office Depot, FTD and more.
• The Member Service Center (800-368-5242), staffed with experts who can answer questions about legal issues, OSHA regulations, code interpretations and more.
